I had the English sausage pie, it tasted really good and had the best flaky, buttery, crust. Very well made. The service was easy, took about 5-10 minutes, and staff was very nice. The overall ambiance is nice, not much seating, but overall very nice place to get a savory pie. read more

Unique is used too frequently, but it applies to Tip Top, a place i have loved since its inception. Hungry before the Lafayette Summer Friday Night Festival, we craved Tip Top and glad that we did. Their pot pie-like options are terrific, and my first try at New Zealand Beef was a great one. Service is always good, and the product is perfectly cooked and served at the right temp. CRISPY, FLAKY, & FULL OF FLAVOR It's honestly too cool for school that there are New Zealand style pies in Old Town Lafayette. What are the odds? Being someone who has traveled to New Zealand, I can say that these brought back so many memories. They are spot on and even had similar flavors that you'd find on the island. We tried the Bacon, Egg and Cheese - as well as - the Steak and Ale. They were both fantastic, however, I'd say the winner was the Steak and Ale. It had a delicious gravy that complimented the buttery crust. Overall, I really loved being able to go here and share my travels with my husband. His exact statement was, "You ate these everyday in New Zealand? Woah, lucky!" We are looking forward to going back! DINING IN OR OUT NOTES: It's a super cute pie shop in a little house like structure. In the winter, you are able to go inside and order at the small counter. There is a small sitting area (2 chairs) for people to wait for their pies. In the summer, customers typically order from the window and sit on their patio. There is ample sitting on the picnic tables to the side! It'd make for a CUTE first date. (: My recommendation (for the winter) is to pick up the pies and bring them home! You can also pick up frozen pies and heat them up in your oven for a quick pre-made dinner during the week. The friendly staff said it takes about 40 minutes to heat up in your oven. read more

If you have found yourself driving through Lafayette, maybe going to a festival there or hitting up another delicious spot, you might have seen this cute little location. I remember when I first noticed Tip Top pies I was curious what kind of options they had. I like the idea of a pie shop. I was a fan of the short-lived show Pushing Daisies that starred Lee Pace as "The Pie-Maker" and now whenever I see a pie shop I think about him brining back strawberries from a rotten state. This is a savory pie place though which I am not as familiar with but seems like a spot that would be found in England, New Zealand, or Australia. When you go into this location the smell of delicious pies hits you right in the face. Actually, before you even enter in. The second you open the door the smell hits you right in the face. It got me excited. The woman at the counter was very nice and I was noticing that there was a picked at pie that I assume she was eating. A good sign from what I could tell. I ordered a sausage roll. Maybe this was my mistake. This shop claims to have New Zealand style savory pies and I know that a sausage roll is very much British. I hope to one day have one of those famous Gregg's sausage rolls that are popular in England. I also tried to order a latte for my wife but the woman at the counter said they were out of the syrup that my wife wanted and out of milk. Just flat out out of milk. Seems like something that one could just run to the store for but that is fine. Coffee and milk I'm sure won't be requested often when selling pies... Either way the service was pleasant despite them being out of ordered beverage. So, the sausage roll was...for sure a roll of sausage. Maybe this option isn't for me but from what I have SEEN pictures of I feel like this sausage roll was a bit different from what I expected. This sausage roll was filled with a big (excuse my phrasing) wad of sausage meat. Almost tough like a poorly made hamburger or meat loaf. It wasn't as dry though as it had maintained moisture from being in the pastry. The pastry was SUPER flaky to a point where it was brittle. I took a bite and half of the roll shattered all over me, the floor, and the table. I can't say I won't eat here again but this first trip didn't impress me much. I'm a sucker for New Zealand-style pies, and boy did I get what I needed with Tip Top. I got the breakfast pie, which was a great way to kick off my morning walking around Lafayette. It was hot and savory and delicious--it was exactly what I wanted. I also got a house-made soda that was quite refreshing. These pies are very tasty with a perfectly flaky crust and a nice selection of savory and sweet fillings (meat and vegetarian options). They are good for one person, so don't plan on sharing, and you can get them heated or frozen to bring home. There is a cool patio on each side of the building if you can't wait to eat your yummy pie. For breakfast, the bacon cheese and egg is deliciously gooey, and they have cold brew if you need your coffee fix. Another one of my favorites is the Cauliflower Tikka Masala (vegetarian). I only wish they were a little less expensive because it adds up if you want to feed a family ($11.50 for meat pies, $10.50 veggie ones). But when it's that delicious and made with quality ingredients, I can't really complain! read more

This past Saturday was my third time ordering savory pies here. Not a very busy place, at least when I've visited. My boyfriend and I have only gotten frozen pies to go, so I can't remark on ordering anything hot and ready to eat, and I've never actually witnessed anyone eating a pie in-house. For the price, the pies seem rather small, but they are filling. I doubt you'll be left hungry after eating one. I've had the Mushroom & Ale and the Cowgirl 3 Bean Chili savory pies, and the Apple Brown Butter fruit pie. The Chili pie is a bit on the sweet side, which is not really my taste, but it's definitely a hearty pie, and very rich. It goes well with some mashed potatoes from Post, but that's just my opinion. The Mushroom & Ale pie is also very rich, and has almost a meaty flavor for being a vegetarian pie. It's very good, and I'm sad I didn't reprise that order the last time, in lieu of the Chili. The Apple Brown Butter pie was shared with my mother, with ice cream on top, and was delicious! My boyfriend has had the Steak and Cheese twice, and simply loves it! The missing star is mainly just for the prices. $8.50 to $9 for vegetable pies seems a little expensive. Also, if you get the savory pies frozen, you will be waiting 40 minutes (oven cook time) to eat them, so make sure to order them hot if you're hungry! read more

These are mini pies - think of a personal size chicken pot pie. One is probably enough for a meal. I ordered a hatch green chili pie, roast chicken, and a seasonal mini-pumpkin pie for dessert. The crust was so buttery, flaky, and delicious! I also got a chai tea and a nitro coffee aged in a whisky barrel. The nitro coffee was really good and had a little bit of a smoky flavor! You can tell they put a lot of love and care into their food. The pies were ready very quickly. Everything was seasoned very well and heated up to perfection when we ordered! read more

Went into this pie place this morning after hearing about it on FB. Found it very easy, its on the right after your turn off baseline. There is a smallish parking area on the side for about 3-4cars. They had about 9 different pies for sale that you could eat there or take home frozen. I chose two that they heated up while I waited, and it was a short quick wait. They have a standing table but its not a dine in and hang out place. Being vegetarian, I tried the cauliflower tikka and the egg with green chili. I did not enjoy the cauliflower one. The i side filling needed a bit more salt and it was way too loose in the pie, it is missing a binding agent (potatoes or paneer would be great). After splitting it in half it was a struggle to keep anything in the pie pocket. The flavor was decent, I just feel it needs tweaking. The egg and green chili "brekkie" pie was definitely delicious and a great morning bite. I can imagine the meat and egg version are super filling and tasty. The green chili was just flavorful enough, but not spicy. They advertise that these pies are great for athletic folks going up to ski or hike and I can see why. Their pie crust is a solid pocket and not a heavy dough. The pie seems just enough to fill you up but not over stuff you. I will come back again next time I am looking for a lil egg pie pocket of yummy. I encourage folks to try this place out! read more

So disappointed. Had not bought a pie from Tip Top for a couple of years and I was excited to eat them again. These pies are now reduced in size and they are mainly pastry. My steak and mushroom was gloopy and tasted mainly of thyme. The NZ pie had hardly any filling, not what I remember from a few years ago and certainly not the yummy meat pies you find all over New Zealand. Every Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend, I try to buy food that is representative of the host country. When the host country was Australia, I sought out something that would be authentically down under. Upon searching for Aussie meat pies, I got 3 main search results. Some place in Denver that permanently closed, some place in Fort Collins, and Tip Top Savory Pies. Even though I live on the south end of Denver, I decided that I needed these pies to complete my Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix themed Sunday. I know, New Zealand is not Australia, but it's close enough for me. To make it work, I bought the pies on Saturday and ate them on Sunday. The pies themselves were really good. I'm thinking somewhere between 4.5 to 5 yelp stars. The pie crust is as good as I can imagine savory pie crust could be. The fillings were flavorful and comforting. I couldn't decide which pie to try, so I got 2 of each savory pie that was available that day: steak and cheese, steak and ale, New Zealand beef, and chicken. My only nit pick was that the chicken pie was slightly under seasoned. The fabulous thick pies were quite substantial, and each pie was enough to serve as an entire meal for me. Service is good and friendly. There is basically a window where you can order your pies. The person working the window was patient with me and explained their products. Next to the small building is an outdoor seating area. I prefer an indoor dining experience because I like the idea of eating my food in a controlled environment right after ordering it. For my specific visit, it didn't matter because I was getting takeout, but not having a dine-in experience option will weigh on my future meal considerations here. When I ordered 8 pies to-go, I was expecting the pies to come in boxes to preserve the shape. When I got all 8 pies, individually paper wrapped, all crammed into a single bag, I was worried. The top 2 pies were perfectly fine. The middle 4 pies were progressively flatter and broken as we made our way toward the bottom of the bag. They also steamed in the bag. Sadly, the bottom 2 pies actually busted open. Thankfully it wasn't like an explosion or anything. It was just really flat pies with maybe like 20% of the filling outside of the pie. We reheated the pies in an air fryer, which fixed the steamed crust issue. The pies where the filling spilled out a lot were noticeably more dry after air fryer when compared to the in-tact pies. This whole situation could have been avoided if they either packaged pies in rigid boxes with steam holes on the corners or if they make a limit of something like 4 pies per bag. All in all, the food from here is worthy of 5 stars for me, but the combined lack of dining style options and especially the to-go packaging fail has me knocking off a star. read more

Yum Yum Yum! I love this place and yes I know they are New Zealand Hand Pies, but man they remind me of the ones I had in Galway, Ireland. I have eaten at the location, which is now out door dining only, but even prior it seemed more like a pickup and leave atmosphere. I have also taken some home for dinner later in the week. The instructions are great except you have to have your phone to be able to get them as I was told to take a picture and then you have to make sure you are following the correct instructions for the different types of pie- which was a bit unclear - or could have been just me. Having been pre Covid and currently I will say that the staff seem much more friendly and willing to offer suggestions, bring our food outside etc. Oh and one more thing had a iced coffee with ice cream last visit - Hello this could be a new favorite of mine. read more

Came during peach week and as it turns out our server Chris was the sweetest peach of them all! When traveling though New Zealand I couldn't eat these pies enough and I can honestly say that Tip Top checks all the right boxes in Yum Town!
