Best Thai ever. The food here is great and my family always begs me to take them here when they are visiting. Also, the owner of this restaraunt donates more than any other business in the area. They deliver tons of food every Sunday to local food charities. And I'm shocked how many people are only going here with groupons!!!! I wonder, do they ever come back and pay FULL price? Love Tiparos. I've been going here for 10 years now and the improvements that have been made over the years have made it even better. The sushi is good, however, the texture in some of their "crunch" rolls is a little...off. It's less tempura crunch and more of a Rice Krispie crunch. Not too expensive, generous portions, and a pretty nice staff. Always a go-to in my book. read more

I don't know about the atmosphere in the restaurant since we got delivery, but the food itself was quite tasty. We ordered the panang curry, mussaman, and the noodle delight. My goodness--Pad See Eiu is just about the most delicious thing I've ever eaten. And since having my eyes opened to this wonderful dish, I've tried it at a number of Thai places. None compare to Tiparos. Whether your eating in, taking out, or getting it delivered, the portions are more than ample. And even though you get a lot, it never seems like enough. The food is EXCELLENT. I have turned several friends onto Tiparos in the last year, and it didn't take much more than a polite suggestion. The staff is friendly and polite. The facilities are warm, clean, and inviting. And the menu is diverse--though I normally stick with the Pad See Eiu, the bubble teas are a fun treat, the sushi is fresh and well-priced, and the presentation demonstrates pride. For the price, convenience, and taste, I really don't think you can beat Tiparos. Give it a try! read more

Tiparos and I go way back. And this place seriously just keeps getting better. Inside the restaurant various tapestries are hung. It is sort of a clean, minimilist look, which I find so relaxing. Service is great. Very attentive. Everything they offer is really fresh and delicious. And they now offer brown rice if you want it instead of the jasmine. Not every place has that choice, so that's just another way Tiparos wins me over. The portions are generous. Either that or I'm a light-eater. I usually eat half and save the other half for another meal. My favorite I would recommend to all those who enjoy curry...hot fried chicken curry. I've been eating Thai food in Chicago since 1989, and have tried at least a dozen different places throughout the city. Tiparos is by far my favorite in all respects. Their typical Thai dishes are top notch, (I've thoroughly enjoyed all of their curries, especially green curry chicken and their very rich panang beef, Their home-made peanut sauce and satay chicken are also fantastic.) In addition to great Thai fare, they offer a broad selection of somewhat Americanized Chinese dishes like almond beef with straw mushrooms, most of which are better than I've had in Chinatown. I greatly appreciate that they do not over-sweeten as so many Thai and pan-Asian restaurants do to appeal to a broader audience. Tiparos has also had a full sushi bar for the past couple years, and I've been impressed with the flavor, freshness and creative presentation of their nigiri and roll sushi and sashimi, some of which is ludicrously reasonably priced, (they have enormous spicy crunchy tuna rolls for $6!) My "Puerco Pibil" Thai dish, Tom Ka Kai chicken/galanga/coconut milk soup, is the best I've had (refer to the opening scene of "The Mexican" where Johnny Depp shoots the cook for shifting the puerco pibil paradigm.) It's hearty with plenty of galanga root, chicken, lemon grass, straw mushrooms & dried peppers-- I often make a meal of it, whereas at many Thai restaurants this dish is but a thin broth. Not just me, (I'm a regular,) but anyone I see walk in is treated as an honored guest. Even people who are waiting for takeout are treated like royalty-- seated and served water while they wait. Service as a dine-in guest, both inside and outside during the Summer, has been quick, respectful and attentive. I don't think I've ever waited more than 10 minutes, even when they were quite busy, for take-out I've ordered as a walk-in, and my call-in orders are always perfect, and usually ready by the time I get there. While I can't say I'm transported to Thailand when I walk through the door, the decor is quite tasteful, the atmosphere relaxed, and most of their thoughtful staff appear to be Thai. I've only drank there a few times, so I can't speak to the caliber of their cocktails, but they do have a full liquor bar, a decent beer selection including Singha, a short wine list, and several excellent varieties of Sake to choose from. There is one quirk to be aware of: They charge for rice as a side, ($1 for white rice, $2 for brown), but all things considered, for Thai, Chinese or Sushi of this caliber, Tiparos is an unbeatable bargain, and we're quite lucky to have them in the neighborhood. read more

The food was generic and boarder-line unappetizing. The vegetables had an unwashed flavor and I could tell the carrots weren't peeled. The dish had a ton of calamari, more than I would have expected but it was tough. I would have preferred half as much at a better quality. The service was great when I visited Tiparos (about 6pm on a Wednesday). We wanted a quick bite before a show at Second City and they were very attentive and quick to serve us. We got the deluxe sushi platter to shareand an order of pad kee mao (spicy/drunken noodles). I'm a bit of a snob in the noodle department but I really liked their version. The noodles weren't gloopy, had a nice tart and sweet flavor and the veggies were crisp and fresh. I also loved all the fresh jalapeno slices, but that is how I roll. The sushi was fine, it wasn't like wowomgfrantictweeting good but it was pleasing and fresh. This place was gross. My roommate and I ordered "Young Corn," which was a chicken and vegetable stir fry dish and Pad Thai. The Young Corn was completely over cooked and had a funny flavor. The chicken in the dish was tough and did not taste fresh. The Pad Thai was completely flavorless. Also, the vegetable egg rolls were terrible. I don't make a lot of yelp reviews, but felt that I needed to for Tiparos. By far, the worst Thai food we have had in years. We ate here on Monday (10/28) around 4:45 pm and my fiance ordered the Sweet and Sour Chicken with a side of Brown Rice. I ordered the Pad Thai with Chicken. Both dishes were extremely rubber-like. Yes, rubber-like. The Brown Rice my fiance ordered was half cooked and half uncooked, leaving a very semi-dry/semi-spongy/semi-crunchy feel. The vegetables in the Sweet and Sour Chicken dish were canned vegetables, nothing fresh, and the chicken was RUBBER. My Pad Thai tasted like it was cooked on a dirty/filthy cooking surface. The noodles tasted like dirty oil water and the chicken was, you guessed it, RUBBER. We also ordered Crab Ragoon for an appetizer and you couldn't even tell there was crab in the CRAB Ragoon. It looked like there was an orange tinted mayo-mixture pumped into a pastry puff and fried. By far the worst Thai food we have ever had in a dining experience. We explained how dissatisfied we were with the dishes and they didn't even want to comp us for anything. We gave them back our plates 3/4 full and went home and ate. When I'm in Old town I almost always end up stopping at tiparos. The food isnt out of this world good but its decent for the price I believe most entrees are $10 or less. The standard pad thai and pad see eiw place its ok portions are kind of small but decently flavored and not too greasy. But what I think sets this place apart is the cleanliness. Show me another thai place as clean as this place....I know other places have better food but sometimes I would like to not see scum everywhere while enjoying my thai food. Anyways I got some rolls from the sushi bar they tasted fine no complaints. Thai iced coffee was good not too sweet not too bitter. Check came out to little over $30 with tax and tip for two so not too bad. Will visit again. read more

I eat here (sit down and carry out) at least 3 times a month. We do not come here for Thai food, the portions are smaller and nothing too cray, don't ever order the Pad Thai btw. But we come for sushi. I'm pretty picky with sushi.. ok I'm very picky.. and I enjoy about 90% of what I order. All the makis have been great. The interior is quiet, kinda zen, and humble. Tiparos was the definition of a solid three-star experience for me. I went with my boyfriend for Valentine's Day. The service is top-notch; our water was never low and we got cute mini-cheesecakes on the house after dinner. The food was just okay. We split the tempura appetizer, which was veggies and shrimp. The veggies included sweet potatoes, broccoli, and green peppers, some of which were strange in the context of tempura to me. My boyfriend said otherwise. The batter was kind of blah, as was the sauce. For dinner, I ordered the Pad See Eew. (This is how I rate Thai restaurants.) It was good. Not great. The tofu in it was cooked and flavored well. It could have been a little saucier, and the sauce could have been more flavorful. My boyfriend ordered the wonton and BBQ pork bowl. I tried a shrimp wonton, and it was tasty enough. He was happy with his food. Again, it was just okay. The prices are great, and the service was excellent, but the food wasn't stellar. This is a place that I'd be willing to try again, just to see what some of the rest of the menu is like. read more

great place for cheap, not-too-shabby food. i'm not too into these sort of asian fusion places, where you can get sushi, curry, and pad thai all in one sitting, but my wife and i have been going for almost exactly that reason (when she wants fried veggies and i want some cheap sushi). my only complaints, one which isn't really fair of me: 1. there's a yelp check in deal, which has brought us here several times. what we didn't realize (each time, haha) is that it's only valid at really strange hours. and it only shows you the validity _after_ you check in. 2. the byob is really only byow -- they won't let you bring beer in. they do sell booze, though. i was just bummed out when we brought a six pack of good local chicago brew and couldn't drink it. (that being said, the owner let us drink it "this one time", so i'm not complaining too much...) read more

I live right around the corner form this hidden gem and ever since moving into the neighborhood It has been a staple in my house hold! I like the typical thai food; pad thai, fried rice, masaman curry, nothing too fancy but it is always delicious! When eating inside the place is wonderful with great service and a lovely atmosphere. Getting take out is always good too except that delivery takes way too long so I usually just run to pick it up! Recently I have discovered sushi and have not gotten a chance to try anything more than a California roll from here but that itself was very good! Highly recommend! read more

The front desk has always be very kind in taking our orders and the deliveries are always fast (within 30 minutes) Food: Thai Spring Rolls -- Avoid them at all costs Pot Stickers- Pretty good 3 out of 5 Tom Yum Soup w/ Shrimp (4 of 5). It's heavy on the fish sause and the sweetness Lab Kai (Excellent) and make sure you ask for it extra spicy Spicy Basil Leaves w/ Chicken -It's ok. Just ask that they use oil and maybe make it a bit spicier. Pad Khee Mao - Excellent but just ask that they don't use as much oil. Lard Nar - OK, seems like a smaller dish. The beef was tough so I'd opt for Chicken Pad Thai- Pretty generic and good portion. Aroma Thai and Classic Thai Kitchen has a better Pad Thai Excellent place for delivery and take-out. I'd just suggest that you ask that they cook with less oil and you should be ok. read more

It's Saturday night, you are cruising in your girlfriend's Toyota Avalon on Lincoln Ave heading downtown.She is hungry, and you try to appear savvy. Half the places are full with young poseurs, half places are closing, parking is impossible to find... You go all the way to the lake and just as you turn on Clark, an oasis appears. There are people (she would never dine in an empty place), but not overwhelmingly so, and parking on Clark is doable. So you are in. Hey, it's classy but underpriced: a "shot" of Sake worth $7.00 turns to be a nice karafe (did I spell it right?), the Tuna Tartar is the best I ever tried for just about ten bucks, and the staff is helpful, English-speaking and not crowding. $40.00 later, we are leaving, full but not stuffed, me pleasantly tipsy for what was more like five shots of wonderful Sake. Hey, I even forgot the loss of forty dollars, that's how happy I am ( the fact that it was her turn to pay helped somewhat). The place is a Japanese - Thai fusion. I think fusion is a great concept: you can get a curry and maki roll at the same place for relatively cheap. If you ask me, fusion could work on some people too: don't tell me girlfriend, but she could use quite a bit of Salma and Penelope, with a spicy dab of Maggy Q.
