Good food, but expensive relative to fancier but potentially less authentic options. Service for past 3 times has been spotty to slow. Faves: Rokero tacos and beef tacos, nachos are great but small, cheese enchilada is top notch. Not so fave: carne asada was dry. Rice is second only to Uncle Julios. Mixed drinks are expensive, e.g., $13 for a margarita, relative to other strip mall restaurants with sketchy decor (TVs on the walls, plastic plants, blinky-lighted game machines in the bar). Cool paintings though. The place is packed with a vibrant Hispanic and Anglo clientele, evidence of very good recipes for those who may have grown up with them, and those who now know where to find them. I'm so torn when it comes to Los Amigos. While they have the best carne asada tacos in this area IMO and their refried beans and rice are to die for, their service is one of the worst. I love their pupusas too, pupusa loca is my favorite. I usually get take out now and is much quicker. Prices are good and portions are generous. They have a large bar and there the service varies. It's kinda up to the woman serving you and if she likes you or not. In the main dining room tho, you wait a lot. They have a large dance floor open on weekends, but it's full of creeps tbh and there's usually fights. So I wouldn't recommend anyone going. My rating would be 3 and a half stars just bc their food is good. read more

Yesss to everything! Came here in on a whim as I was driving home from work and feelin' some take-out because who wants to cook after a long day of work? Not this girl. I could smell how good this place was from the moment I stepped out of my car. Walked in and felt a sense of community as I looked around to see groups of friends laughing and having a great time, some drinking beers smiling by the bar area as I made my lonesome way to sit and check their carry out menu. Not gonna lie, felt a little out of place as the only Asian in the restaurant surrounded by locals, but that doesn't matter :) There was a good amount of people for it being a Sunday evening. Asked recommendations from a waiter and one of the first things was ceviche. Of course I had to order! The raw fish & shrimp tasted so fresh and there was a perfect amount of zest from the citrus juices- not too much to overpower the other flavors. Also ordered carne asada and quesadillas (basic, I know)- delicious as well! Originally I was only ordering for myself, but everything on the menu sounded delicious that I ended up getting more items to "share with my family". I'm kidding, I really did share with them. Unfortunately, my boxes tipped over in the car ride (rushed to get home because everything SMELT SO GOOD. Took me a lot to not rip open and feast alone lol) so everything got scrambled. Regardless of my food being jumbled, everything tasted delicious! Ordered 2 carne aside, 1 chx quesadilla, ceviche and it was perfect to share among a few people. Loved the authenticity of the place and food. Locations kinda hidden, on a corner end of a strip, but plenty of options for parking on both sides of the restaurant. The lunch out crowd at work has really taken a liking to this place, we continue to go back and struggle with ordering in broken Spanglish from the staff. The service times can be very slow if there is a crowd (and quick if you are lucky enough to be the only ones there). The food continues to be spectacular for low-brow cheap eats... YUM! Update (March 2012): The bathrooms have been renovated and are much nicer than they used to be. Also, the Salpicon (chopped steak, mixed with onions, cilantro, and radish, served cool) is spectacularly delicious and the perfect complement to a warm day. Hey Washingtonian, I got yer Cheap Eats right here! "Ethnic food" encompasses a wide range of authenticity. Taco Bell is NOT ethnic food. Tipicos Los Amigos appears to be pretty damn close. On a recommendation of a lunch companion, I decided to go for the Pupusa Traditionales off the appetizer menu, $1.95 each. 3 different types, I figured for 6 bucks, why not get them all. I only was able to eat 2. Man they are good, but filling. The staff was very friendly, but English was not their strong suit, so ordering was an adventure in spoken English, butchered Spanish and pointing. The effort paid off. On the TV, they appear to have Footyball (soccer) playing 24/7, and apparently this place is very popular when certain teams are playing. Can't wait to go back, "It's good stuff, quality!" I love the food here, especially the tacos, but I don't see a point in ordering by phone and still having to wait when I get there. They tell me that my food will be ready in 15 minutes, which is good because I work at another store in the same building so I could easily walk there, pay, and head back to my shift. I get there a little over 15 minutes but they made me wait another 15. That normally wouldn't be bad but if my food is going to take longer than 15 minutes, then why say that? The restaurant was not even that busy either. It felt like as soon as I got there, all the waitresses hid in the kitchen. This isn't even the first time. I had two bad experiences here and thats enough for me to not want to come back. First time I sat in the bar area with a friend and ordered food and drinks. We got a second round and after that our server never came back. We waited and waited and we finally found her. She was sitting at a table in the restaurant area chatting it up with some guys. Never returned to check on us! Second time my friend and I sat down in the restaurant area. When we arrived there was only one other family eating. There were two servers on duty a guy and a girl. The girl had the table that was already sitting down and we got the guy. We ordered drinks and then food a few minutes later. Half an hour went by and no food or server came by to check on us. H e was busy helping the other tables that came in after us. (Which all got our food before us) After 40 MINUTES we just asked for our check and paid for the margaritas we had. Walter never came to check on us or even bothered to apologize!! They honestly need to hire more competent people because that experience was beyond ridiculous!! I have to echo all the complaints about the service. Just not good. Definitely felt like I was not Latin (brown) enough to be welcomed in. Food took forever. Had to send the server for silverware twice (3 people in our party. First time she only brought 2 sets). Getting the check was a chore. One complaint / thing I found odd: we ordered apple juice for my 4 year old daughter, which was brought in the form of a juice box. Nice I guess, but refills = buy another one. Sign said Tex Mex.... It was more Salvadoran food. The seasonings are different so if you are expecting combo plates, don't go there. Other than that, good service was provided. The chips aren't fried (this was so wrong, I was expecting fried crunchy morsels to nibble on) and the salsa had a different taste, I'll just say an "interesting" taste. Write back if you know what's in the salsa. I ordered a chorizo chimichanga (I know right? Ahh the gluttony of it all) and it was alright. It was nothing but 10 pounds of chorizo in it. Serious. The guacamole on my salad was spot on. My husband's carne asada was a sorry piece of thin meat, I almost thought we were gonna grill some bulgogi at a Korean joint. It was after 10PM on a weekday and luckily Tipicos Los Amigos was still open. Stopped in for some takeout. While waiting for my order, asked for some Tortillas and salsa. Luckily the waitress obliged as I had not eat for almost 10 hours! Ended up ordering a few Pupusas, fajitas, and a cheese appetizer. Unfortunately they messed up the cheese appetizer and I received a slightly different item. Found the Pupusas to be smaller than other El Salvador locations in town, while being more expensive. The quality of the food was suspect as when I ate an item as leftover, it did not sit well with me at the hotel the next day. Think next time I will try to ensure to get dinner before everything closes in Sterling. If you have a stomach made of iron, dont mind waiting a long time, and feel like overpaying for El Salvador / Mexican food, then by all means come here. Otherwise, stay away. read more

This is probably the best Salvadorian restaurant in the area or at least the one that's been most consistent in food in my opinion. If your pupusas are bad, at a Salvadorian restaurant? don't eat anything else. The pupusas here are delicious. Great ceviche, Great sopa de mondongo, very authentic. If you come here and order the "safe quesadillas" shame on you. My only complaint about this place is that the servers don't seem happy often, The service is good and bad and comes with or without a smile. I think they just need training. I've been coming to this place for years and decided they deserved my honest review. The food is super affordable, always delicious and the staff is always excellent. Officially the menu is a Tex-Mex variety, with dishes from El Salvador, Honduras and Mexico. I've had every type of taco, the enchiladas, burritos and each type of papusa. My favorite is the steak taco and the papusa revuelta (pork). Great salsa as well. read more

Went here on a Saturday at around 2:30 in the afternoon and was seated promptly in a spot of my choosing, which was great. Nice selection of beverages--everything from soft drinks to beers to true and authentic Central American-style drinks. Food was absolutely AMAZING. I had two bean and cheese pupusas, one steak taco, and one lengua taco. The actual food and all of it's accompaniments were so fresh and for the price, $2-$3 per item, it was really hard to believe just how awesome and authentic everything tasted. Went back here again, this time late Friday night. I asked to see their happy hour menu (just for future reference) & the server didn't know anything about happy hour. She eventually brought out the drink menu & their happy hour seems suspicious to me (look at the pics I posted). It says happy hour M-F 5-9pm, but it doesn't state what the happy hour deals/prices are. All the prices on that drink menu are pretty steep. The server again didn't have any info to offer about the deals or prices, so I asked her to ask her manager. She later came back & said ONLY the beers are 1/2 priced during happy hour. So I look at the drink menu again & the beers DON'T have prices next to them. So the consumer doesn't know how much the beers cost & how much they will cost for happy hour. I hate guessing prices on alcohol at restaurants, that's what clubs are for. Make sure you ask the prices of beers before you start drinking!!! They may switch them up on you! read more

I HATE tex-mex food with the fire of a thousand suns! ... Or at least I did until I stumbled upon this gem while en route to the Leesburg outlets. Most TexMex restaurants (read every other TexMex restaurant in the DMV area) disappoint me because they normally pull together all the essential ingredients of Latin food with none of the flavor, flair, or love and then further screw it up with gobs of melted cheese. Then there was Tipicos Los Amigos! I ordered raw oysters on the half shell as it was the first time I'd seen it on a tex mex menu. I also had a Plato Tipico comprising of flank steak, yellow rice with veggies, retried beans, a fried egg, and salad. I also ordered the fried plantains with red beans and a Tamale de elite (sweet corn tamale). Everything was spectacular! The oysters were served with a spicy green avocado salsa that was a perfect pairing. The Plato Tipico was so flavorful, so we-seasoned, and so lovingly made that with no room left at the end of the meal, I was tempted to order another. The fried plantains were a hit simply because its a childhood favorite of mine. Lastly we come to the tamale! I love sweet corn tamales and feel sorry that most people have only tried sweetened corn flour tamales but have never had it done the right way. Served in side of a husk rife with the sweetest white corn kernels I felt as though I was back in DF, Mexico! Seriously, this dish was beautifully prepared and had all of the authenticity and flavor you'd never find in the sweet corn appetizer at the Cheesecake Factory (though that's good too it just can't compete). The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and my feast cost a little less than $30. Though this place is a bit out of the way to bc one a regular for me I will certainly revisit the fare anytime I'm making the trek up route 7 to the outlets. read more

Really good tex mex here. I ordered the calamari as an appetizer and didn't bother asking if it was fresh b/c the menu said it was fresh, and by golly, it was fresh. It came out on a large platter with a bed of greens and a tomato based sauce. A dish like this would probably go $12.99 elsewhere, but it was $8.99 here. I also tried a cheese pupusa, and it was good also. Never had one before this. It came out with cabbage slaw and some tomato salsa, and that was good also. I then ordered the double chicken enchilada, a beef quesadilla, beef soft tacos, and chicken nuggets/fries. The enchiladas were incredible. Fresh tasting grilled chicken smothered with jack cheese, the best refried beans ever on top of rice, and a side salad with fresh guacamole. OMG it was good. Quesadillas were good also, and the fries were good. Oh yea, the chips/salsa were really good. The salsa was a chunkier and better versions of Chevy's on a stone mortar. This place was packed on a late Monday afternoon. I'm so glad I came here instead of the Chick-fila across the parking lot. Next time, I will try the ceviche. read more

We have Been to the restaurant a handful of times and it has always been good. This time the salsa tasted different, a bit bland. We normally ordered papusas but never the locos. I have lived near this restaurant for many years and tonight was my first visit. I ordered beef enchiladas to go. Many reviews speak about long wait times, but I sat at the bar and didn't wait too long. The food was a disappointment. No real flavor. While the beef was slices of steak vice ground beef, it was really tasteless and it was pretty expensive. I will not be back. Next time I am craving Tex-mex I will drive a few additional minutes and go to Guapo's in Herndon. They never fail and are much better priced. read more
