We had such a tasty and enjoyable lunch at La Prensa last month that we were really excited to find out they offered cooking classes.  This afternoon we went back and learned how to make our own corn tortillas.  We were then able to choose whatever delicious filling we would like for two tacos plus, we also learned to make tostadas.  Chef turned these into another amazing dish for us to enjoy.  After that, we were taught how to make two super salsas.  This was in addition to the salsa and guacamole and warm house made chips which greeted us when we arrived.  Plus, a cocktail of our choice.  It was such fun and a great meal!  We are truly looking forward to returning for another one of their classes or tequila/mezcal tastings. read more

My husband and I had an amazing dinner tonight. We started with the fried eggplant chips and patatas bravas - both were delicious. The eggplant was thin and crispy, and the honey added the perfect touch. The potatoes were cooked just right, with a flavorful sauce. We also shared the nachos and each tried two tacos (carnitas, poblano, Korean, and shrimp). The nachos were delicious, definitely a little messy, but nothing a fork and knife can't handle. Every taco stood out, with great flavor combinations and toppings. For dessert, we had churros that were crispy without being too sweet or greasy. I just wish it came with more ice cream. Really enjoyed our visit here and left impressed with both the food and the service. We shared several dishes and everything came out tasting fresh and thoughtfully prepared. This was hands down the most incompetent place I've ever been to. My friend has a chili pepper allergy which might be challenging at a Tex-Mex restaurant, but it's absolutely manageable if you're clear about ingredients. She specifically asked whether the guacamole contained jalapeños and was told it did not. After a few bites, it very clearly did. Next, she ordered the potato bravos and again asked if all pepper could be removed or omitted. The dish came out covered in a pepper sauce. I ordered a house salad with shrimp. For an extra $12, I expected quality shrimp instead, it was tiny baby shrimp that tasted over-boiled and frankly disgusting. The salad itself was fine, but the shrimp ruined it. The only thing they got right was my friend's chicken salad. Our bill was $80, and they even included the guacamole that triggered her allergy -- we had to ask them to remove it. We're in the area for a soccer tournament as is my cousin and her daughter. They went to La Prensa two nights ago and recommended it to us so after a hot day out on the fields we took them up on their recommendation and, boy, are we glad we did! We started off with the chips, guacamole and salsa which was a great way to kick off the feast. The salsa had the right tough of spice and the guacamole was next level good! It was Happy Hour which featured some really nice options that were too good for me to resist. I ordered a pulled pork empanada and then the pork al pastor taco and a carnitas taco, both without onions. The empanada was one of the better ones that I have had and the salsa served with it paired perfectly. The al pastor taco was my favorite of the two with a nice heat profile present cooled off by the pineapple chunks in the taco. Excellent stuff! My wife went for the al pastor rice bowl which was an expertly crafted and looked almost too good to eat. We both don't drink alcohol but not to worry because the mocktail list is plentiful and the two that we selected were perfect and balanced the meal out nicely. The queso was a combination of birria, chorizo , and cheese. Very unique and different but I wasn't blown away by it. The tacos were decent flavors wise, they felt light and not over seasoned. The carne was small but still a bit chewy. The chorizo was ok. And the birria was very tender I just wished it had a side of consommé. Staff was very nice. My family had talked about how awesome the food was so we were ready. The food was actually very good. We started with some chips and guac and some queso dip. The chips were really good and had a hint of lime and the guac was very good too. The queso dip was phenomenal though. I'd easy give the queso a 5/5 and say it's a must try. I ordered 3 tacos and they were good but not the best I've had in this area. But everything is made from scratch, including the salsas, which makes for a great meal overall. The service here was great. I think we had a party of 8 and they handled it with ease. Surprisingly it wasn't too busy for a Friday night. They took great care of us and fulfilled all requests. They even brought my aunt a birthday dessert which was really kind of them. The ambiance is modern and casual. There's a bar and there's also tables you can sit at. It's a great place for a date or a family meal. Things to note: They do cooking classes here that you can sign up for. The chef used to be the executive chef at The Conche is Leesburg and the owner of that restaurant funded him to start a Mexican food restaurant. Ok so I truly was giving this place a true chance, epic failure. The owners of this establishment obviously spent all their money on decor. The food was just ok..they charge for chips and hot sauce which at 99.9% any other place is complimentary. We ordered 6 tacos at $5 each they were so tiny literally 2 bites size of that. We wanted a side of hot sauce for our tacos they charged us $4 for that! I just felt so ripped off and nickel and dimed. When we left my husband went thru a drive thru bc he was still so hungry. To start with the customer service was horrible and the food was overpriced. And the food was blend for a Mexican restaurant. They should not be trying to do that kind of food. Nice place with modern hip feel. Diverse Mexican food with a variety of chef inspired dishes. We sampled the nachos, empanadas, and various tacos. Everything was well prepared. A wide variety of ingredients utilized to create the different tastes. They have a good menu and a small but diverse happy hour menu with fair prices. As for the food we were not overly impressed. The nachos had multiple ingredients but were small and lacked enough chips to support the contents. The chips were buried and became soggy unable to support the load or scoop. Our favorite was the empanadas, we had pork and chicken both good. The rojo and verde salsa that came with the empanadas was small and both a little sweet- again not overwhelmed by the flavor. The tacos were very diverse and some hit. We liked the carne and the harissa chicken. The al pastor and tinga were mid. Tacos were relatively small too. No beer on tap but great alcohol and non alcohol options. Felt the total bill was more than expected for the amount and size of food. Server was friendly and helpful with menu.
