I am shocked to learn that this historic South Bend restaurant is closing, effective immediately! Nestled in a gorgeous historic mansion, the Tippecanoe Place Restaurant served upscale meals and was popular for special occasions. My boyfriend and I came here for Sunday brunch in early May 2025 for a romantic date while I was visiting South Bend. Our service was spectacular and our brunch was delicious and expertly made. I did notice that there weren't a lot of people also dining there, just a dozen or so other patrons during our time there. It wasn't the best brunch food I have ever had, but the potatoes were fabulous! My omelet was pretty good too, but I am an omelet fanatic. The side of fruit my bf and I each got were fresh and generous as well. My bf got the quiche and was pleased with the portion and taste. Since I grew up in South Bend, I had always heard of people going to Tippecanoe Place. It was for rich people so growing up, I never had the pleasure. Fast forward 50 (okay, maybe more like 60"ish") years, I returned. My out-of-town family members and I made an effort to visit this restaurant for lunch. The site is beautiful and has a lot of South Bend history described in the pictures on the walls. You are welcome to walk through the three stories to see the fantastic architecture. We ordered chicken sandwiches, chicken salads and I had an excellent chicken marsala. Why not five stars? The chicken on the salads and the sandwiches were overcooked and very dry. The chef overlooked the chicken on one salad but, once it arrived, again, it was overcooked. The service was good for as busy as she was, but the restaurant was definitely understaffed. The prices were a little high, but I think this is the new normal. All things considered, I would return just for the chicken marsala, it was that good. read more

If you're all about visiting to learn about the history and have a look about by all means but the food is seriously over priced for is quality. It's the stereotypical tourist attraction food quality. I ordered the traditional cut of prime rib $39 which came with a baked potato and veggies. Truth be known the baked potato was the best part of my dinner yet, it wasn't even seasoned. The veggies were not prepared properly, they were mush the instant my plate was set down. The brewery on the second floor has some decent beers to offer and their spinach & artichoke dip flat bread was decent. Recommended by an employee at the museum, we chose to head over in an effort to avoid crowds potentially involved with the home Notre Dame football game. Driving up, I got a bit hesitant because the appearance of the building was so striking, I was expecting a very expensive menu. Walking in, the interior was just as lush opulent. We made the decision, so we stuck with it. First, we had to decide which floor we were going to dine in. Would it be the first floor buffet, second floor bar with their own brand of beer, or up on the third floor for the more formal dining experience. Choosing the bar, we were not disappointed. Menu items ranged in price, and none were the sky high offerings I would have expected. My burger and sides were priced what you would expect elsewhere. It was not inflated for ambiance or atmosphere. And, it tasted wonderful. My friend ordered the Flatbread Pizza, which was covered in yummy looking toppings. He enjoyed it. Our server was a hoot. It's not just the meal. It's the destination. This place looks good inside out. Each room is different from the other, all exuding old world elegance. Our server Robert typifies service expected of this place. The dinner for 2 for $95 is a steal(see pics). I'll have the French onion soup followed by prime rib medium rare and end it with brownie with ice cream please. You can have your steak anyway you want as long as you don't mind getting it medium well. The prime rib nonetheless was still delicious. Bottom line: This place is worth the dining experience at least once. It's always fun to dine in a place with some historic or historical significance and this is one of these in what was the Studebaker mansion (Studebaker the former American auto maker). It must have been really something in its heyday. Our large party dined in a what appears to have been the library just of if the porch entry (not the original main entry) just off a large open gathering space that now serves as a waiting area. White table cloth is de rigueur but simple elegance with the backdrop of the richly detailed and adorned space creates a sumptuous setting. We started with cocktails. My Manhattan was on the boozy side but still enjoyable. I had Pinot Noir with my dinner which was quite ample in a large wine glass and a nice complement to my prime rib which was beautifully done. The service was prompt and sufficiently attentive but, thankfully, not annoying allowing the conversation to flow--a necessary ingredient for a truly good dining experience. The meal is based on three courses with several wonderful and wonderfully prepared courses. I will say that you must try the French onion soup to start and the cheesecake to finish. I also asked for the compote actually served with another dessert but making the cheese cake heavenly. It was our anniversary, and my husband surprised me with a reservation here for dinner. Man, I was so excited to come to this place and check it out. When you first drive up, you feel as though you are entering into a time since past. The rich history of this building combined with the preservation is reason enough to come check out this place. Having said that, and I will note now that there are a few other reasons to come check out this exquisite building that is rich with history, I will let you know that you do not want to come here for the food. Do not be disillusioned by any stories that you hear because some people are just under a different kind of spell. I don't fault them that, in fact, I envy them of this, but it doesn't mean that they have any indication of the actual quality of the food. The food at this establishment is the level of cafeteria quality, but at $44 for fillet pricing, I expect better quality than below below average. My steak was so charred that the burnt flavor overwhelmed everything, and I eat medium rare to rare.... No option to choose your sides, but what we got was over cooked everything; green beans that weren't green anymore, squash that really was squishy, alongside Zucchini that rivaled the squash for squishiness, and over boiled watery potatoes with a strange sweet seasoning that was frankly not good. I ate a few bites of my steak and enough of the other stuff to know I didn't want it and pushed it all away. My husband did the same, and we both felt epically let down and disappointed on such a special day. He was embarrassed, and I tried to let him know that I was okay, but he knew. The saving grace to the meal was a tiny little biscuit that was the absolute star of the show! Unfortunately, the waiter said they imported those from an external source, so not even the biscuit was from Tippecanoe. Meh. This experience was a letdown. I won't be returning unless it's to take over and revamp the menu. Side note: that night at like 4am I got so sick I was hollowed out and left as a husk. I don't typically write reviews, but I felt compelled to share our recent experience in hopes of helping others make an informed decision. My daughter's boyfriend was visiting for the weekend, and we wanted to treat him to a memorable dinner. Having dined at Tippecanoe Place a few times in the past and always enjoyed it, we felt confident it would be a great choice. Unfortunately, the evening did not meet expectations. We were surprised to find the restaurant nearly empty on a Saturday evening. After waiting several minutes, we were greeted by a staff member who, as it turned out, was both our host and our waiter for the night. We each ordered a cocktail, but both mine and my daughter's drinks were extremely watered down with almost no flavor. Even our guest commented on the lack of taste after sampling our daughter's. Rather than continue with cocktails, we shared in the opinion that maybe sharing a nice bottle of wine would be a safer choice. When it came to dinner, my daughter ordered the Chicken Oscar, I had the filet mignon, and both my husband and our guest ordered the prime rib medium rare--one of the restaurant's signature dishes. Unfortunately, both prime ribs arrived rare, and my filet was overcooked to medium-well. We didn't say anything at the time, hoping to keep the mood light for our guest. The sides didn't improve things--our vegetables were cold and watery, and the zucchini was especially underwhelming. When I looked over at my husband's plate, I was shocked to see that most of his prime rib was inedible fat, and our guest had a similar experience. He even expressed concern about how undercooked his meat was. Wanting to end the night on a positive note, we ordered that bottle of wine and tried to enjoy what we could of the atmosphere. But overall, we left disappointed and I somewhat embarrassed, especially after having spoken so highly of the place beforehand. For over $500, the quality was far below what we expected. I'd recommend visiting Tippecanoe Place only if you're stopping in for a glass of wine, a dessert, and to appreciate the beauty of the mansion itself. Arrived about 2:30 on a Sunday with no reservation, party of 6. We were seated promptly. The service was good, described everything accurately, all the orders were correct. I had the onion soup and the duck, both very good and quality was inline with the pricing. To have a cocktail, starter, main and a desert took 2.5 hours, which seemed long to me. Perhaps they were not staffed up for the time between brunch and dinner. It's a big place with lots of separate rooms. Definitely take the time to walk around all the room and the different floors and take in all the historical photographs framed on the wall. I would return and would also be curious to try the brewery on the top floor for a more casual experience, enjoying this historic place with less commitment of time and money. read more

My husband planed a great date night but the food was nothing we expected. The night started great with being sat right away. We did make reservations ahead of time but showed up a few minutes early. There were only 2 or 3 other tables. We then ordered drinks and the crab cakes. The punch and cosmo came out perfect and the crab cakes had so much flavor! It went down hill after that. I ordered my ribeye medium rare and it came out well done and everything came out tasting so bland. Definitely not what I was expecting after the crab cakes. They remade my steak but my husband was done with his food at that point. My next cosmo came out tasting like nothing but lime juice. I specifically inquired whether they took rind off the brie and was assured they did. They didn't. Nobody likes a big mouthful of mold while eating...unless it's blue cheese. The server was clueless. Didn't know what anything was or meant, claimed to have been here 6 months, and said she didn't know how to work the espresso machine. You'd do much better tip wise if you had a clue. The prime was perfectly cooked, had a slight crust (not an impressive one), but the sides and accoutrements were unseasoned and flavorless. The hunk of meat was the highlight, which is unfortunate since prime isn't a difficult endeavor The fries weren't drained well, overly white in appearance with spots of brown. Clean sign that they weren't moved at all while frying. The sandwich was excellent; though, they charge a buck for cheese when one is leaving off bacon. Do we need to get that nickel-and-filet in a purported fancy restaurant? The building is absolutely stunning and classy. It's too bad they aren't making any attempt to make the food match the ambiance. They get an extra star because there were kids of an employee in the basement. Always support working parents! This restaurant is set within the original Studebaker family home. This is one of South Bend, IN's claim to fame outside of their beloved Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. This restaurant offers a holiday brunch that has a loyal following from families in the area. Holding a notable reputation, we made reservations for our family to attend their Thanksgiving brunch. Thanksgiving was here, and we enjoyed our time in a unique venue. The house, albeit ornate, was showing its age. The traditional Thanksgiving meal was served during our brunch. They offered everything from Prime Rib, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Yams, Salads Bar, Shrimp Cocktail, Pie, to Mimosas (not served with fresh OJ, but with OJ concentrate). I had asked for Iced Tea, and they only offered out of a fountain (not freshly brewed). The stuffing was dry (sitting out for a while?) and was heavily salted. The turkey was ok. The yams were tasty. The desserts were nice, and I enjoyed that they had fresh berries and whipped cream as options. Overall, the food was alright and did the job. When I say alright, I'm being generous. This statement is especially true, considering their pricing. The service was a bit slow, as well. However, they were very busy. All in all, I left feeling we were overcharged for the quality of brunch offered. The experience was lackluster all around. I was mildly disappointed in our experience. I expected more for a memorable meal, especially when Thanksgiving is focused so much on the food. Now, I understand many people enjoy this restaurant in the area. The crowds they drew during our visit the holiday speaks for itself. I would still consider giving it a shot at a regular, non-holiday, brunch or dinner. Wedding review - May 29, 2020 During the 2020 Pandemic the scrabble to find an open venue was very intense. Fourteen days before our planned wedding date we had the opportunity to have our wedding at Tippecanoe Place, thank goodness! Jazmine met with my step mom and I and we were able to plan a COVID friendly in 1.5 hours. She did a wonderful job finding ways to accommodate my wants and turning them into COVID friendly opportunities. She was very creative and caring while working through this process. The day before our wedding things had to shift again due to weather. The entire wedding and reception was moved to the inside. The staff worked so hard to get the main floor ready for a wedding in less than 24 hours. I also brought with me the decorations. As the wedding was now inside I was not exactly sure what i needed or how things were going to look anymore. Jazmine volunteered to do all of the decorations herself, relieving me of this burden. When I came the day of the wedding and saw what she created i was ecstatic. She created a beautiful setting out of boxes of random things. Super impressive. During the rehearsal Jazmine took charge and was able to direct and redirect everyone so well. She also was super wonderful when i asked her opinion on things she would give me a educated and thought out response. It was so great having someone with her experience in our corner guiding us along the way. The day of the wedding the entire staff at Tippe were amazing. I did not have to do a single thing. Anything and everything i wanted or needed they were on top of. I am so thankful for all of them! At one point during our reception i noticed my husband had not had anything to eat because he was mingling so much. I asked one of the staff members if it was possible to get him a plate of Hors 'doevres (COVID friendly). They promptly accommodated and took care of him right away. The entire experience overall was so wonderful! Jazmine and her staff made the best of a situation that was unpredictable and foreign to us all. Having a wedding coordinator like Jazmine made the hustle and bustle of a COVID wedding barrable. She took all of the stress off of us. This place has always been good. I was born and raised in South Bend and it has been a fixture for many years. It was originally the Studebaker mansion which was the home to the Studebaker family that built the cars in South Bend until the brand eventually went out of business. The house itself is gorgeous! It is worth walking through to see all of the woodwork and fireplaces and parlors of the past. The restaurant has been open for many years. The food is good and they used to have a Sunday brunch that was awesome. I remember going to dinner before prom one year! Most recently we celebrated my mom's 90th birthday with a luncheon in one of the private rooms. It was very nice. Our waitress was very patient and friendly and did a great job considering there was 19 of us! The food was good and the temperature was fine for the servings. I would recommend the restaurant to anyone who is looking to have a nice experience in a unique and interesting location. read more

Wasn't interested in us except take order and serving it when available. We both got the standard prime rib. Generous serving and just as we ordered it. I've driven by this venue numerous times and had no idea it was a restaurant. It is a restored home from the 1800's and is beautiful inside. I explored while waiting for our table and found the bar on the top floor which looked like a fun place to hang out. Our meals were okay, it was a Sunday evening and lots of families dining. I had the prime rib and my husband the salmon. Both were served with mashed potatoes that were simply a skin on russet potato mashed and steamed veggies that were actually the star of the plate. Temps on both entrees were a little below warm. Our server was attentive but he had several tables and service from the kitchen was very slow. The kitchen is also located in the basement or floor below the main dining area so it's a hike for the waitstaff. All in, an okay meal in an incredible venue. Next time I will try the bar! read more

We had a reservation for 6:15 and didn't get our food until after 7:30pm. Once we received our food the steaks were way over cooked. Since it took so long to get the first time we kept our food just so we can eat. We appreciated the 50% discount that our server gave for long wait. Menu doesn't tell you but you got mashed potatoes and uncooked green beans with each meal. Probably don't tell you because there were no other choices. Potatoes I think were red potatoes mashed but they had no flavor. Oh wait, I did order asparagus, not knowing it came with green beans, but I can't tell you how they were because I never got them. The service was good although very slow. We waited over 30 minutes for the entree after our salads were finished. I have been to Tippecanoe countless times over the years for weddings and it has been really hard for me to judge the food. There are times when I come and the food is top notch! But every time if they are real busy (wedding parties or restaurant week) I notice both the food preparation and the service goes downhill. Last night was an example of the latter again came for the $33 4 meal course for restaurant week. The appetizer I got was a spicy shrimp very much like bang bang shrimp! I really liked it! Everyone at my table ordered it and I noticed we all had different portion sizes I guess if I got the bigger portion I wouldn't complain? Lol but it was sad seeing that 2 of my friends had so much more then me. Next came the chopped salad. It was ok but nothing to rave about. The entree I ordered was the NY strip. My friend had gone last week for the same meal and was raving how huge the steak had been. We were all looking forward to it. Then got the steak and MAJOR let down. He said it was half the size. Our brocollini half of it was RAW. The manager was called and asked about the steak size and at first he made the excuse that the restaurant week size and the menu size is different. But my friend told him he also did restaurant week last week. Then the excuse was last week they ran out of the restaurant week size so they served the actual menu size of the NY strip. Really??? Fine. Now taste. My steak was not cooked medium rare that I wanted. The steak even with grill marks on it did NOT taste grilled. More like baked and no flavor at all. We then ordered dessert. My cream cheese mousse was perfect. And at least the dinner ended on a good note. Needless to say, do not ever go when it seems they are super busy or big special going because you will just be getting super disappointed. We have dined at Tippecanoe Place over the past 20 years. In the past we have enjoyed a top-notch meal in a terrific environment. Unfortunately, we found on our last visit that only the mansion's ambiance remained. Our Server was good, but the food was beyond disappointing. Hardly a single entree was palatable - French Onion soup was mostly Worcestershire sauce, too heavily salted to eat. Replaced with clam chowder that was overflowing with dried rosemary. Again, not pleasant. Chopped Salad's Green Goddess dressing nearly without taste, a few tiny crumbled of blue cheese and a couple of bacon bits. Roasted Duck was obliterated with a sweet sauce; Baked Potato was not hot enough to melt the butter. We were very surprised at how bad the food - though priced to be expected as excellent - was a total failure. The venue doesn't seem to hold clients to the dress code either, billed as Business Casual. The Dining Room was full of parkas draped over the back of chairs, and some were wearing baseball caps. Wasn't anyone directed to the Coat Room? We would go to Tippecanoe Place expecting an above average meal and atmosphere, but it seems to have been allowed to degrade to a fancy, overpriced novelty. So yes it's been awhile since I've been here for their brunch! This review is based on the brunch I had yesterday. First when I came here years ago, the price was $17 a person, now it's $24 and I must say the quality and quantity has dramatically went down. I only came back here based on my previous visit from years ago. The selection is VERY limited for what a brunch buffet at $24 a person, I believe, should be! I tried to try most of everything! Now, back when I first came here, they had many chefs in the what is now the waiting area cooking. Chefs for making omelettes, waffles, pancakes, and I think the carving station, but can't be sure. The room they had all the food was lined with lots of breakfast items and lots of lunch items too. Ohh and a huge fountain of shrimp cocktail, the one now is small and in water not the ice. Now, this is what you get for an increased rate of $24 a person... one chef is cooking omelets in the waiting area and there is a line. Then, the buffet area is a circle of food item which is very limited compared to what was served at my first visit. Also, there's a line. Here's is a lot of what you get: Omelette station- Options- mushrooms, bacon bits, ham, sausage, cheese (cheddar), green peppers, onions, spinach, jalapeñoes Hot bar- Carved ham (dry) Roast beef (very fatty) Short ribs with rice (very salty) Bacon (didn't try) Cheese eggs (too much cheese) Hashbrowns (very salty) Sausage links (didn't try) Waffles with topping options: maple syrup , blueberry apple, and cherry sauces and whipped cream Salad /pasta area- Green Mixed salad with 5 dressing options Cocktail shrimp with sauce, Tomatoes (grape or cherry) and mozzarella balls dish (bland) Green bean salad (canned beans, not very good) Fruit Salad (pineapple ,mango, marshmallows, cherries, coconut, whipped cream) (tasted like canned fruit) broccoli salad (didn't try) Coleslaw (didn't try) Cucumber salad (didn't try) Crackers with what was tuna salad or chicken salad (didn't try) Fingerling potatoes in sauce (bland) Dessert - Mini blue berry muffin (wasn't fresh looks store bought) Bread pudding with cherries (some parts too hard to chew) Mini fruit danishes (looks store bought) (didn't try) White chocolate chip cookies (didn't try) Blueberries, strawberries and blueberries in a bowl (not bad) Greek Yogurt in dry oatmeal with peanuts (too with blueberries, strawberries, and dried cranberries (not good and too dry) So overall I think the food wasn't worth it considering our bill came to $57 (buffet for two with two with two coffees which were 5.50) plus 20% tip which is $70 for brunch! That's $35 a person! Would I come back, NO! The place doesn't have fresh quality food, a lot of what I believe to be canned food, and a lot of the items were empty and not being refilled (we were there at 11am).
