I love soups! One easy way to make a big delicious pot of soup is by using Anderson House, Frontier…read moreSoup mixes. I really love their "hearty soups." They take longer to make but they are economical and extremely nutritious. You can control the salt and fat content of your soup. Among my current favorites are the Ski Country Chili Mix and the Beef Barley Stew Mix. After a while, you begin to create your own version of these. I'll often substitute a lower fat meat like ground turkey or different vegetables than called for. My variations are a creative way to make the soup mine. Frontier includes the seasoning packets so you don't have to worry about that. I love adding unique twists like wine or sherry to enhance the flavors. My only complaint about Frontier is that they stop making some of the recipes, ones I loved so much. For instance the Red Bean Gumbo or the Wheat Berry Chili are no longer available. The New Mexico Mesa Stew was changed to an "instant" variety and it is not nearly as good! They still have great soups available. Try a few of the hearty ones. You'll love them.

Among the many things we scooped up were two Pacific Rim soup mixes, because I've always been a soup guy. Last month I whipped up a batch of their Pacific Rim Gingered Carrot & Coconut Soup. I had to add 2 whole pounds of cut up carrots, four cups of broth, a TB of brown sugar, and a can of unsweetened coconut milk. It went on the stovetop and an hour later (with an assist from my immersion blender) it was ready. It yielded 8 servings and was pretty good. Today I cooked up my second batch of their soup -this one had the tongue twisting name of "Nebraska Barn Raising Split Pea". I had to add 6 cups of broth and I swapped out some diced chicken from the freezer instead of the bacon they suggested. This time I made it in a crockpot instead of on the stovetop. You can either cook it on low for 4-5 hours or on high for 8 hours. I put it on low in the morning and by the time lunch rolled around at 1:00 i checked it and it was perfect. I was super happy with the way it came out and after it cools down I'll package it into some containers for refrigerating and freezing.

I'll use ground chicken or turkey, and double up on the red wine. It's great served over macaroni.

If you're from Cali, you probably think you've had Chicago-style pizza because you've seen a…read moredeep-dish pie or two, right??? Yeah... I thought that too!!! Turns out, I was very wrong!! So wrong!! A REAL Chicago pizza is basically a full-blown cheese & toppings filled pie with a thick bottom crust, generous amount of cheese and the sauce piled on top like the grand finale. We stopped at Giordano's in Gurnee and ordered a 14-inch build-your-own w beef, mushrooms, and onions. "Large" apparently means "feeds a small village" because this thing was massive, easily enough for a family of 5!!! Every slice came with that dramatic, slow-motion cheese pulls that make everyone at the table stop talking and start taking pictures!!! The ingredients tasted fresh, the cheese was gloriously gooey, and each slice was hearty enough to qualify as a meal and a half. We also grabbed the mozzarella triangles and buffalo wings bc apparently self-control wasn't invited to dinner. The mozzarella triangles were crispy, cheesy little pockets of happiness, and the wings brought just the right amount of buffalo kick. Both were absolutely delicious and disappeared way faster than they should have. The service was fantastic too!! Drinks never stayed empty for long, and the staff was attentive throughout the meal. We walked out stuffed, happy, and officially educated on what REAL Chi-town pizza is supposed to be!! If you're visiting Chicago, Giordano's is absolutely a must!!!

I hadn't had Giordano's since 2009, and while the pizza still tastes largely the same, I remember…read moreit being better back then. That may just be my palate changing over the years, but I'm giving it a higher rating overall because the majority of my family enjoyed it, and for most of them, this was their first experience with Chicago deep-dish pizza. Pro tip: If you're planning to treat your sailor here after PIR, come as soon as possible after graduation. The restaurant quickly fills up with sailors and their families, which can lead to longer wait times and slower service - and time during Liberty is very limited.

When you think of wings at most bars, you expect something decent, maybe a little too breaded,…read moremaybe drowning in sauce, good enough with a drink but nothing unforgettable. Glen Flora is not that. These wings genuinely outclass the usual bar standard, and they do it without trying too hard. The first thing that stands out is the crisp. Not a thick, heavy crust, just a light coating that gives you that clean crunch when you bite in. A lot of places overdo it and hide the chicken under batter. Here, the texture actually works with the meat instead of covering it up. And once you get past that crisp exterior, the chicken is seriously juicy. Tender, flavorful, and cooked the way wings are supposed to be. The hot BBQ sauce tastes exactly how good barbecue should: smoky, a little sweet, familiar in the best way. But the heat is what makes it special. It doesn't overpower. It lifts everything. The spice sharpens the sweetness and makes the smokiness pop a little more. It feels balanced, like someone actually thought about the flavor What surprised me most? I was there with a few friends, and normally that's all laughs and conversation. But once those wings hit the table, I caught myself zoning out, focused on what was in front of me. I was in my own little world. And at $1 per wing, it almost feels unfair. I ordered 15... and honestly? I should've ordered more. These aren't just "good for bar wings." They're just good. Crisp, juicy, balanced, and way better than you expect walking in. Rating: 8.7/10

For sure it's nothing fancy. There's pretty slow ass service but there's also fun times. Bar had a few people in it but we found seats and got menus. It's got about what you expect with okay prices. There's nothing to eat really that good but it's not bad though. Bar has TVs so usually it's okay watching games awhile. It's about $7 for a basic cocktail. The usual stuff like Jameson. It's about $8 for an appetizer. The Pretzel Bites were simple yet still took a long time. Basic things with cheese or mustard. They were slow again getting our bill so it was even more of a wait. Finally they brought it and we could leave. There weren't even many customers in there. Imagine what it's like when it's busy. This isn't the place to go if in a hurry. Has a pretty nondescript location by some auto garages. It's got a pretty basic menu with greasy things including pizza. This is located at the intersection of Glen Flora Avenue and Walnut.
