The ambience was excellent. We really enjoy it. There was three of us. We were sat very quickly, and our drink orders were taken care of quickly. It seemed like forever before they took our order, which gave us plenty of time to look over the extensive menu. I went with the bacon wrapped meatloaf that has a disclaimer that it contains pork. That's funny. One in my party had a breakfast plate. Took about 20 minutes for the food to arrive which is fine because you don't want your food at a restaurant too quickly, it means that it was pre-prepared The food was excellent and another person in my party. TJ's Roadhouse, located in Colfax, CA has been serving amazing breakfast, lunch and dinner to Colfax locals, and travelers along busy Interstate 80 for the past 15 years or so. The restaurant has become a Placer County icon, and is noted for serving one of the best breakfasts in the Gold Country. As you enter the restaurant, you'll be welcomed by a "Please Wait to be Seated" sign, but on this Tuesday morning the dining room was lightly seated, and the friendly hostess simply waved and greeted me with "Seat anywhere you want to." I sat at the bar, which is where I prefer to sit when I dine solo. The large dining room is comfortable, and in keeping with the Gold Country atmosphere of the town of Colfax, is decorated like the town... very rustic. The decor features many mounted animals, photos, posters, beer signs and lots of "Americana," along with countless American flags. I love it! From my seat at the counter, I was able to watch the friendly staff in action, and chit-chat as their time permitted. I was also offered a glimpse into the kitchen through the order pick up window. From the "Meat Lover's" section of the breakfast menu, I went with tri-tip, hash brown potatoes, two eggs along with sourdough toast. You get to choose between hash browns, home fries for your potatoes, and toast or pancake for your side. The menu offers many other options at an additional cost, including biscuits and gravy. The "star" of my delicious and hearty breakfast was the tri-tip; a tender cut of "Certified Angus Beef," which made for a great cut of beef for breakfast. The generous serving of beef was perfectly seasoned, marinated and grilled medium - my hostess didn't ask for my preference - and was juicy, tender and simply delicious! The generous serving of beef was cut into large bite-size pieces, which allowed for the marinade and juiciness to showcase, and was fork-tender, so the cutting knife was simply window dressing. I used my fork to cut each piece of meat into smaller sizes, which always seems to work for me. The reward: One bite into a piece of the tender beef, and I was rewarded with perfect flavor, a rush of juices, and a taste that I'll remember for a long, long time. It's always a difficult decision to choose between home fries or hash browns, but today I went with hash browns and I truly believe I made the right choice. The generous serving of hash browns were perfectly fried to a crispy, golden brown on the outside, and tender white inside, which made for a perfect side dish, and perfectly prepared hash brown potatoes. The chef has talent! The two eggs are fried "your way," using butter, and I went for sunnyside up, as when eggs are fried on the "sunny side," they blend perfectly with hash browns. The eggs were cooked perfectly, and worked well with the hash browns. I placed the eggs on top of the hash browns, added a dash or two of Cholula Mexican hot sauce, and simply ENJOYED the amazing diner cuisine! The two pieces of sourdough toast were on the thick side, toasted perfectly and coated with the right amount of real butter. They made for the perfect way to sop of every bit of goodness from my breakfast. If you're in the mood for a superior breakfast, look to TJ's Roadhouse. The "Americana" diner cuisine is simply delicious, and the portions are large. No wonder TJ's was voted by the Auburn Journal as the "Best of the Best" in 2019 for casual dining in Colfax! My breakfast was simply amazing. Tri-tip was the main attraction to my breakfast, but the side of hash browns was as good as it gets, and the fried eggs were delicious. This breakfast was as good as it gets, and kept me satisfied and happy all day. I simply enjoyed a salad for dinner at home, as when it came time for dinner, I was still moderately full. Classic breakfast burrito - massive and delicious and tons of items inside Mexican breakfast burrito - just as massive and tons of flavor the burritos are more than enough for two portions. Keep in mind since the size is big the price tag is a little bigger as well - $14 per burrito. BUT I would 100% go again. Our holiday visit to Colfax started with an amazing breakfast at TJ's.locals rave about the steaks and other dinner entrees and I can't wait to visit again! Be warned- their portions are HUGE! We ordered the chicken fried steak that comes with two eggs, toast, and home home fries. Figuring we would definitely have to split that, we ordered a side of bacon, because well... bacon! SIL and I stopped here Sunday night on our way back to Reno from 6 Flags Vallejo. We were tired HUNGRY and cranky from driving but as soon as we stepped inside TJ's were greeted by the warmest atmosphere and it lightened our moods! We were sat immediately and ordered chili cheese fries to start, which were flavorful and ooey gooey. I could have eaten a whole bucket of them. For entrees I chose the Spotted Owl (on homemade onion bun WOWZA) with a side of MORE chili cheese fries and SIL chose the Pepper burger with garlic fries. Everything was delicious, well flavored, well prepared. Every person working here was friendly and attentive, even when I spilled Ranch dressing all over the floor (still sorry about that!) My only grievance is it's so far from where I live, because this place ROCKS. read more

Delicious dinner on a Wednesday night. My husband & I just moved to the area, and decided to adventure out. I had the steak sandwich (thank you prior yelp reviewers), and my husband had the California-type burger with egg & avocado added on their homemade onion bun. Umm, do yourself a favor and get the onion bun--delicious & so soft. The steak sandwich was great, and so large I get to have the other half for lunch today : ) We also had the homemade blueberry lemon bread pudding for dessert & it was incredible. Stopped here on our way back home, and wow. These burgers were amazinggggg! I ordered the Clownifornia with avocado instead of guacamole. My bf got just a standard burger and added avocado & bacon with grilled onions. We both ordered garlic fries. Breakfast was well portions plates, with so many options. The most memorable was my Cocktail for brunch which was called a HOT TODDY. I brought so many memories of my Step Grandmother . It was a cinnamon infused Whisky, with honey and lots of lemon. I'm sure many people who stop by after hitting the ski slopes make this their go to drink. We were fortunate to meat the manager and was given the history of the restaurant. I'm told that Halloween is a special time to go and enjoy the ambiance. I have been to TJ's several times over the years and have alway loved its quint/ rustic ambiance and food. But this visit was significantly different. Let me start my saying that the service is great. Everyone was kind and attentive. The food -- a big letdown. I ordered a New York steak dinner. The house salad was fresh, but the blue cheese dressing tasted mainly like mayonnaise; not nearly enough blue cheese. The mashed potato's were good, but the gravy tasted like it was a mix from a box. Imagine "hospital cafeteria". The steak was the worst part. It was the thinnest and fattiest New York that I have ever had. No exaggeration, 40% was fat or gristle. Love the food, you need to fix your phone system. The last 3 times we've tried to order to go, you haven't picked up. I've gone in and they said the phones were having an issue. I don't want to have to go in and wait 30 minutes for a to go order, defeats the purpose. I can't believe that it took us so long to stop here. We go back and forth to the Bay Area and have driven past here for years. Finally we stopped in for lunch and it was well worth it. Great homey ambiance and awesome varied menu. The service was excellent as was the food. I highly recommend their house made potato chips. They came hot, cooked to perfection and were delicious. Check out this great little spot in the foothills of the Sierras. The patio is a nice place to catch a meal. I had the delicious spotted owl sandwich in the fresh made onion bun. The flavors really hit the spot and the chicken was moist. It wasn't greasy or soggy and the fries were crispy and tasty. Worth a try. read more

Went here yesterday after a hike. It was my first time eating here. Was so glad to find a dine-in place open. Soon as we walked into the waiting area there was hand sanitizer full and ready use =) Upon entering the inside there was a traditional Northern California Country décor and the aroma of warm yummy food. They welcomed us and sat us in a timely fashion. I ordered the double chin burger (medium), but the single patty version of it (which isn't labeled on the menu?) . Wish it was labeled on the menu, it would have been easier to order it. Definitely, not trying to get a double chin! LOL The burger was great and so were the side of onion rings. It wasn't medium, more like medium well, but it was still soft and moist & yummy. My friends ordered sandwiches and fries. Both plates were full to the rim. Perfect for sharing or taken home for later. Which is important to folks, because we all don't want to have to leave the house or cook later and we really appreciate getting what we pay for! The onion rings were definitely better than the fries. Don't know if that was a fluke or that's how it will always be? Also, my friend accidently spilled her draft beer passing me the Ketchup, so she ordered another one. The waitress brought the new and replaced the exact amount she spilled. Only reason it's a 4 is that they were short on help , manager was cooking and there weren't enough wait staff to handle crowd. Food, once our order was taken and arrived, was very good. We each got something different so we could try more dishes. There was nothing we wouldn't order again. Their special desert was complimentary, due to the length of time it took to order. Sounds more rugged than it is, but the food every time I've eaten there has been delicious and fresh. The burgers and onion rings have got to be the main reason I go there. They do you have a Bar, and I've had their bloody Mary which was different because they use sake instead of a vodka like most places do. Still it was pretty good. Includes 1 egg, 1 pancake, 1 meat, 1 large hash brown serving, and coffee. Good deal for under $10. Pros: Really delicious pancake with warm syrup. Good hash browns and the sausage patty was thin, large, and grilled well done, but moist and flavorful, just as I like it. Cons: The egg over easy was full of runny uncooked egg white. I love a runny yolk but despise any uncooked whites. If I order "over medium" to avoid runny whites, the yolk is too firm, so it can be a hit and miss and this was a miss because the egg had too much egg-snot. Red pizza sauce has zero flavor and definitely is in need of some salt. Are usually stop at this restaurant from Reno. On my way to Sacramento religiously. I always get the burgers and the server said that they were well known for their pizzas so this time I got the margarita pizza. if it wasn't for the oregano in the basil on the pizza, this would've had no flavor. I would have given this restaurant three stars if it wasn't for the wonderful staff that they have. They do have some of the friendliest servers and I really appreciate that. I had gotten my pizza to go and jump back on the road to eat along the way. Otherwise I could've just salted it myself. So word to the wise get a side of salt with your pizza if it has the red sauce, but if I could recommend go five minutes more on I 80 W. to Newcastle.
