My favorite tacos in Indy. What sets Tlaolli apart is that everything is made from scratch with fresh ingredients. While it's a little on the pricier side, I am happy to pay a little more for such high quality and to support this little gem of a place. My favorite thing to get is the tofu mole tacos. Their tamales are made with vegetable oil instead of lard and are very yummy too. They have meat options but also have a great vegetarian and vegan selection. They have gluten free options. Everything is consistently fantastic. It's in a safe location and there is parking close, on the west side of the building. (The building faces Washington street and has a front door but the entrance is the north-facing back door.) The only negative part of any experience I have had there is that last time I went in it was very cold inside, as if the heat wasn't on. I was bundled up so I didn't mind too much. They have limited hours, so make sure you plan your visit accordingly. It's quite a lovely hole in the wall and it is worth seeking out!! read more

Tlaolli was just named the "best taco in Indiana" based on Yelp data and reviews. Why, you ask? Owner Carlos is one of the nicest and most caring people in town. Their tacos, tamales, and soups are out of this world. They have a TON of vegetarian and vegan options. They're located in a cute, purple taco house with a colorful interior and patio. Are you sold yet?! I bought the NoNoNo taco, one of their most beloved items. The name stands for: no meat, no dairy, no gluten, and the taco comes with roasted poblanos and soy chorizo on puréed black beans. Listen up -- I'm not even vegan and this is a go-to for me. I literally eat meat, dairy and gluten and love this. Their chicken chipotle tacos are rockin' too. Don't forget to try their hibiscus hot tea, made from fresh hibiscus flowers. You can order it hot or iced, and it has a unique tartness to it that I really appreciate (I'm not a big sweet drink person). During COVID, the inside of the restaurant is closed to the public. Instead, you can place an order either on their website or by calling in. They'll then ask you to park outside when you arrive and they'll bring your food to your car. I first heard about tliaolli in an article that listed them as the best taco in the state of Indiana. That naturally perked up my curiosity, but I didn't have the chance to visit until recently. On east Washington street, it is the cutest purple house and it looks like it has a fantastic back patio, which I am excited to try shortly when it gets warm again. I ordered online and got the pick three tacos; I got the jackfruit, chicken, and pork tacos. I loved all of tacos and polished off all of them. The ingredients were fresh and well-paired on corn tortillas. They also take covid very seriously, which I appreciate; I would love to have visited inside, but right now you can't, so I ordered online and drove over to pick them up. When you arrive, you call, and they bring your order out to your car with a mask and gloves on. All around a great experience, and I can't wait to go back. read more

I should have known this was gonna be amazing based on the smell in my car on the way home. Omg. I cannot believe I waited this long to get to Tlaolli! Shame on me! They have SO many vegan and veggie options which is hard to find. I had a hard time choosing, so I got a smattering of all of the things. First off, I LOVE that the items are all labeled. It is the worst when you get home with a bunch of tacos and don't know whose is whose...but not here! Everything was labeled clearly. LOVED it. Second, the ordering and pick up process could not have been any easier. I called in, talked through the order, got instructions for where to park (in the library parking lot by the line of trees/Tlaolli's patio), and then I just called when I arrived. They came out to the car with my order, masked and safe, and away I went! Easy peasy! (and safe!) Of note, they are not offering any inside dining for now, so just call it in (or order online) and you're set. Third, the food itself is just AWESOME. The tamales are made with olive oil - NOT lard - so I could eat them! Hoooooray! Each taco was different, unique, and tasty. Admittedly, I was unsure of the Hibiscus at first, but realized that it is unlike anything else I have ever had. WOW. The blossoms have a somewhat tart taste, which I thought was great - but I can see it not being a good fit for some (*cough cough my husband*). The tamales were also good - we did the Pinto and the Nonono - and they were tasty! This visit, I was so happy I added on the Charro Bean Stew, as it was the perfect 'gut warmer' for this chilly day...and vegan! NOMS. Tlaolli is a VIBE on the near east side! A friend had told me about this new taco joint off of Rural. "The tacos are legit and the Hibiscus tea is bomb!" I was like, "bet...I'm there". However, typically if I was looking for a taco joint on the Near Eastside, I'm looking for a hole in the wall..."if you eat here don't worry about what's in the vaccine"...type of place! Don't get me wrong...there food is on point and has all the authentic flavors of your corner lot taco truck, but the bright and fun vibe they have is a welcome and refreshing addition to the city...especially when all of us can use a little more of that in our world right now! I ordered the chipotle chicken taco and the pork carnitas taco. I loved the balanced spice of the chipotle sauce, but that caramelized pork shoulder made me pause for a minute and thank the holy mother for her blessings! Lol! It was THAT good! The chicken chipotle was my favorite and my second favorite is a 3 way tie between the rest. Each taco comes with pickled onions, cabbage, cotija cheese, cilantro, and an avocado wedge. These tacos are not skimpy and I was pretty full after just one. I have never liked a tea in my life. I honestly got the tea for my husband, but wanted to try it. When the food was ready, I got a text and could reply "HERE" to let them know I was outside for pick up. Easiest thing in the world! For lunch, I had a chicken tamal and it. was. perfect. The flavor was so good, the combo of filling to shell was spot on, and the salsa verde was the perfect little dip of flavor. I will definitely be coming back for more tamales in the future! I also had a NoNoNo Taco (perfect for gluten-free dairy-free taco lover like me!) which was full of flavor with just a tad of heat from the soy chorizo. The portion was spot on! Today's Tlaolli taco was a first (and I purchased a second!) for this foodie. Yes, it was so good that I called-in for another taco to be brought out to my car (COVID compliant) after I annihilated the first. I ordered the Chicken Chipotle taco. It was made with flavorful pulled chicken, the freshest vegetables, chihuahua cheese, and delicious seasonings. I wanted to try several things on the menu, but the soft taco followed up the morning's dental work quite excellently. The only downside of this place are the hours of operation (only open fri-sun). The tacos are amazing!! We tried 5 different ones between 2 people and each one had its own unique flavor. This brightly colored restaurant is a fabulous lunch spot right in the middle of Washington Street next to the library. It has comfy seats and both inside and outside tables with plenty of room for a group. I have been eager to try their vegan options so today my friend and I met up for lunch to try their options. You enter from the side of the building so don't be fooled into thinking they are closed! As you enter the counter is to the right where you place your order next to the menu board. It was full of wonderful options plus the cooking smells made my mouth water just walking in! The waitress gave us some helpful options and we settled on the taco/tamale combo. I had two vegan tacos, one with jack fruit and the other hibiscus and they were amazing. I loved the authentic freshly made corn tortillas as that added to the flavor. The 'meat' was full of juice and sauce so it tasted like every bite took you to the owners family kitchen! Loved them! The tamale was tasty but I preferred the tacos as I love the mix of flavors. But my vegan tamale was perfect. They don't have tap water as an option so we purchased bottled water and fresco which was ideal for this hot day. The pink and green walls brought out the joy in the place. It's hard to believe the lil place has been open since early 2010s, because it all looks new and clean. Ordering at the counter, I asked the lady at the register what her favorite was and she told me, "the torta is the reason I work here." My husband and I were visiting the Indiana's State Capitol and looked for plant based and vegan restaurants in the area so we decided to try Tlaolli. It was a treat to find a Mexican restaurant offering more than just greasy veggies in a fajita. Due to covid, they're taking orders online only and even though their indoor dining is closed, they have 4 picnic tables in their outdoor patio. We placed the order and added a comment that we'd like to eat outside if there was a table available. Minutes later we got a call to confirm our order and to let us know that they were not going to wrap our food to go so we could eat outside. We parked at the library and walked to their outdoor patio area where the owner met us with our tray. Very nice man who is very proud of his business and his food. He mentioned that he's having trouble finding people to work there which makes it hard for him to open the restaurant every day. Back to the food... my husband and I each had a tofu/mushroom in mole sauce taco and a jackfruit in asado sauce taco. Both were topped with pickled onions, pico de gallo, and a slice of avocado on 2 fried corn tortillas. They were both very delicious with an amazing authentic Mexican flavor. We shared a Nonono tamal (soyrizo, roasted poblanos, potatoes, and whole black beans) with chipotle sauce and a pinto bean tamal with mild red sauce. Their masa for the tamales is vegan, made with olive oil instead of lard and the sauce were served in small plastic containers. Both tamales were very tasty. The owner came back a couple of times to ask if we needed anything. We got to try his famous hibiscus tea. It was not too sweet and very refreshing. We highly recommend Tlaolli. Finally made our way to Tlaolli (Tlah-oh-lee), which I found out means corn in Nahuatl. Since they are only open Thu-Sat, I've always had trouble catching them at the right time. I entered without realizing they were doing solely online or phone orders. So make sure to order before you get there! Their website and even "Yelp Covid-19 updates" show this, but I still missed the memo. Once we placed our order in though, it wasn't long till the food was ready. The staff was so friendly and helpful the entire time. We ordered 4 different types of tacos but our favorites were the Chicken Chipotle and the Pork Asado. We live 15 minutes away, so by the time we got home to eat the food, it wasn't very warm anymore. With pickled veggies and fresh herbs and avocado slices on top. Very good. The corn tortillas were thick and fluffy not thin, chewy or greasy. Both really really good. The Hibiscus was different, the spices were good. The tacos were doubled tortillas and piled high with fillings so I was able to make two tacos. And the Poblano Tamale was out of this world! My favorite. The guacamole and the jalapeño creama was really good. But the chips aren't my favorite. I'm guessing vegan/gf. But the next day they were crispy and great! It seems to be trendy for restaurants recently to charge an arm and a leg and not really make it worth your money due to the lack of fillings. Glad Tlaolli missed that trend. The textures, temperature differences, salty, sweet, crunchy, savory.... *Drool emoji* I find it hard for me to spend money dining out on foods that I tend to make at home frequently and mexican food falls in that category a lot for me. My tamale came served with a red sauce and his was salsa verde. Although I enjoyed the tamale, my favorite was the hibiscus taco. On a trip to Northern Indiana, I made a pitstop in Indy to grab some lunch with a colleague. She suggested a couple options, but the photos from Tlaolli really caught my eye! I'm so glad I had the chance to try this place out. First off, the location's exterior is really cute and has a great little back patio area. While there, I had the chance to meet the owner who talked about some of their plans to create an outdoor heated space that can be used in the winter (so you can enjoy this delicious food in the winter even during COVID). I opted for the Jackfruit Asado entree (Jackfruit spiced with chiles served over rice, topped with cabbage cilantro salad, pico de gallo, salsa roja, avocado, pickled onions and a touch of lime juice, served with tortillas or chips), which was absolutely delicious. Honestly, if I hadn't read it, I wouldn't have even realized that the dish was vegetarian/vegan friendly, it was hearty and ate like a meaty entree! There was a little spice to it, but not too much and the flavor was delightful. I would DEFINITELY recommend stopping by and checking out this awesome taco joint!
