Don't let the outside appearance fool you. Although the place looked small from the outside, it has seating options both inside and a patio. The best part about it is amazing service and food. We were welcomed by an extremely friendly staff member who walked us through the menu options. We went with nonono tamale (soy and bean based), and mix 3 tacos of hibiscus and jackfruit for me, and chipotle chicken for my husband. My husband also got a chicken based tamale. My tamale came served with a red sauce and his was salsa verde. Although I enjoyed the tamale, my favorite was the hibiscus taco. I have never had that flower, so it was super cool to try something new. It had a bit of a citrus flavor to it. The jackfruit taco was also pretty delicious. On a trip to Northern Indiana, I made a pitstop in Indy to grab some lunch with a colleague. She suggested a couple options, but the photos from Tlaolli really caught my eye! I'm so glad I had the chance to try this place out. First off, the location's exterior is really cute and has a great little back patio area. While there, I had the chance to meet the owner who talked about some of their plans to create an outdoor heated space that can be used in the winter (so you can enjoy this delicious food in the winter even during COVID). I opted for the Jackfruit Asado entree (Jackfruit spiced with chiles served over rice, topped with cabbage cilantro salad, pico de gallo, salsa roja, avocado, pickled onions and a touch of lime juice, served with tortillas or chips), which was absolutely delicious. Honestly, if I hadn't read it, I wouldn't have even realized that the dish was vegetarian/vegan friendly, it was hearty and ate like a meaty entree! There was a little spice to it, but not too much and the flavor was delightful. I would DEFINITELY recommend stopping by and checking out this awesome taco joint! They all taste like true authentic tacos, definitely the tortilla. I tried the NONONO and the poblano and cheese tamales. Wow, people aren't lying when they said that No no no taco is delicious! Everything I tried was awesome, but that taco was unlike anything I've had. I tried a few more menu items (chipotle chicken taco, pork tamale, Ebony's rice and beans, and guacamole), and I think the No no no still stole the show! As a meat eater and someone with no dietary restrictions, I was very impressed how hearty this meatless taco (also no diary and no gluten) taco was. The black bean puree really added some great additional flavor to this already very tasty taco. I was also really surprised how much I enjoyed the beans & rice! Unlike many mexican restaurants that serve refried beans, these beans were all in tact and mixed in with the rice in a very tasty red sauce. I cut up my tamale into pieces and mixed it with the rice and beans and loved the combination of the flavors. Tlaolli definitely doesn't skimp on portions either. I turned my food into 2 good sized meals and definitely tried some items that I'll be back for. I was excited for the hibiscus tea (I got it iced), which was interesting, but not really a flavor profile I love - it was pretty tart and sweet, so definitely check it out if that sounds like your cup of tea (pun intended). I told my roommate that likes sour beer that she'd probably love it. Overall, I had a great experience with Tlaolli from the easy ordering process, to curbside pickup, and a delicious meal! I don't know if I would've found it on my own since it was so far from where I live but thanks to Yelp, I can definitely see why they were voted #1 spot though. It's an adorable purple house and was so unexpected. If it wasn't cold, I would've loved to sit on the patio and enjoy the sunshine. What a hidden gem! I miss being able to visit in person and hang out in their beautiful space for lunch, but carry out is equally as wonderful! I have tried many dishes here, but the cheese poblano tamale and the hibiscus taco are my must haves. I also really enjoy the chicken soup and the other tacos I have tried have never disappointed. The hibiscus taco has this mouthwatering, interestingly smoky taste which is just unmatched. What a delicious lunch I had at Tlaolli! The Pork Carnitas over rice was so good! I stopped in for a quick bite after hiking around Pogue's Run Art & Nature Park on the East Side. I had driven by Tlaolli a few times and remembered all the great Yelp reviews, so I found a spot in the area and headed over. They have done some remodeling, so be sure to enter from the east side of the building. The "front door" on Washington is locked since that is where the kitchen is now. When you enter the correct door, the order counter is on your left, the dining and restroom are on the right. On the wall next to the order counter is a menu of their available items. The gal behind the counter was very helpful since it was my first time here. She asked if I was looking for Vegan or Vegetarian (I wasn't), if I wanted one of the specials, or some of the selections on the board that come with options. I let her know I wanted the meal to go and after paying, she directed me to where to get my beverage and to have a seat until my food was ready. She brought out a six inch aluminum dish with a top on it and some corn tortillas wrapped for some of the carnitas ingredients. (Note that the two tortillas won't be enough to hold the rice in the bowl, but should hold most of the meat and toppings.) When I got home, I dug in and Wow! The rice was moist and spiced (I chose mild spice, but it was full of flavor!) The pork was tender and the remaining ingredients worked well with both. I only regret that the lid smashed the appearance of the meal during transport, so I couldn't share a photo of the order without it looking messy. Really good food available here. I am not usually a huge fan of chicken tacos, but theirs are so excellent. I also have tried their chicken soup, and let me tell you, it's not to be missed.
