Spent another weekend in Detroit - stayed in Ferndale and checked out this restaurant for breakfast on a Sunday morning. We arrived just after 8am, and in no time, there was a line out the door. A small little diner-style place serving up a great atmosphere and yummy food. We were able to chose a table and sat in front of the window. Within minutes, our waitress came over and took our drink orders. My friend got the banana coffee and said it tasted like banana water - not strong enough. They do, however, have french press available - so that would have been a better option. We both ordered types of french toast. They claim it is challah bread - but it wasn't as light and fluffy as my challah french toast is...more like a texas style french toast - but it was still good. He had the Grand Marnier and loved every bite - but his side of chicken apple sausage was less than perfect. I had the Granola Mountain - which was perfect! A good covering of yogurt, granola, honey, and fruit on top of some pretty good french toast. No syrup needed - which is always a plus, especially if they aren't serving real maple syrup (and I don't think they were). Side of bacon was cooked perfectly - thick, salty, and high quality. I wish one of us would have tried a non-french toast breakfast and had some of the 313 Love Sauce - but we'll save that for next time. Slightly higher price than your usual breakfast, but worth it. The decor is bright and sassy, with paintings on the wall as well as a wall display of different kinds of toasters. There were a few working class folks here on a recent visit, but the clientele leaned toward urban hipsters with funky glasses and tattoos. I thought the prices of $4 for a bowl of soup and $8 and up for omelets was a little extravagant, but the food quality was good, so I can't complain too much. I got the tuna sandwich with a side of potato salad, and my companion got the huevos rancheros. His order was out quickly and accurately. I had a few bites, and it was delicious. The presentation was also good, with a solid layer of cheese and a sprinkle of roasted corn. The potato salad is made with red potatoes, skins left on, and it's good and flavorful. My sandwich was wrong, but I didn't realize it until I'd take a bite. Instead of tuna, I was given the portabella mushroom sandwich. It was good, just not what I'd ordered. When I pointed this out to the waitress, she apologized and said she'd take care of it right away. That correct amounted to being given a cup of tuna salad to add to my sandwich, which I thought was kind of strange. The tuna salad was good, with chunks of tomato and cucumber and a sprinkle of sunflower seeds. delicious brunch spot! our party of five came here on a saturday afternoon. we were told the wait was about 15 minutes so we waited outside. after about ten minutes we were sat. the place is very cute and cozy, especially for a brunch date! the service here was exceptional! i can't remember our server's name (i'm terrible with remembering names) but he was great. he made sure to point out their specials for the day, and gave us plenty of time to make our decisions. i decided to order the two egg breakfast with bacon, and a biscuit with gravy on the side (love that they have this as a side option!) and for the toast selection, i chose the cinnamon challah bread. the cinnamon challah was freakin' amazing, i finished all 4 pieces! it was nice and soft and toasty in all the right places! you didn't even need jam for it. however if you do, they provide you with a selection of different flavors of jam at your table. the other folks in my party had the B-street French toast and omelettes! everyone enjoyed their food as much as i did. the biscuits and gravy were delicious as well, the gravy is homemade with nice pieces of delicious sausage throughout. i wasn't a fan of the sausage because they were not crumbled enough for my liking, but it was still tasty! i will definitely be back, everyone here is so nice and very helpful. read more

Just yesterday I ordered the avocado toast with 2 eggs over medium. Well, the eggs were barely over easy and cold. Yuck. No matter. I simply removed the eggs from the deliciousness and fed my soul. I spoke my mind on the eggs, but was clear it was not a big deal. The blessing was is that I had a meal to eat when others don't. Scotty was amazing. I felt guilty for such a trivially matter, but I just can't do eggs under cooked. My boundaries. Which are important to me. I came back in the very next day and moved forward. I actually felt guilty wasting the eggs as there is someone in the world that would have. I digress. On our most recent visit, we tried the Granola Banana Hotcakes-- huge pancakes with a nutty/crunchy granola taste, and sweetness provided by the almost caramelized bananas within. My choice was the blueberry hotcakes, my standard order loaded up with tasty blueberries. I got sausage links on the side. Rounding out the order, our third companion had the traditional srambled eggs, home fries, bacon and cinnamon challa bread. This looked like a dish fit for a lumberjack. On a previous visit, I tried the "Aunt Leola's biscuits and sausage gravy"--a delicious helping of scrambled eggs, buttermilk biscuits, and gravy with a spicy kick, all smothered in cheddar and served piping hot. Went to toast this morning for a good breakfast and received exactly what I was looking for which, Ironically enough, didn't include the eatery's namesake. One of my favorite things about toast is that you get a large cup of coffee. This is important because most restaurants serve what I refer to as the adult sippy-cup of coffees. Toast, on the other hand, has a large two-sugar/two cream requirement, which means its just the right size. I also love that I don't have to ask for splenda, but rather, it's right on the table. What would breakfast be without artificial sweeteners!? As an avid consumer of omelets I had to go for one of my regulars, the bacon and brie but was thrilled when my waitress suggested that I add spinach, a lovely addition! Supplementing the toast for my second favorite breakfast food, a side of pancakes, I was thoroughly surprised by the deliciousness of the pancakes. I'm pretty sure that they had enough butter to make Paula Dean proud, which had the ancillary benefit of making them somewhat crispy. That delicious crispiness with a delicate and sweet interior made for a fantastic combination. My waitress was good...quite the coop in that I went from an omelet to an omelet with extra fixing , a side of pancakes and loaded home fries that were covered in cheese and thick-cut bacon. Not exactly health food, but a near effortless sell by the waitress. I was a bit disappointed by the home fries, which, despite being covered by all kinds of goodness, were a bit bland. All in all, I was quite pleased by my meal. The delicious omelet was, well delicious, and the pancakes (a first time for me at Toast) were wonderful. We were also lucky enough to get there early enough to beat the morning rush which was in full swing by the time we left. It was a great way to start the day. Toast. Perhaps a toast to squandered potential. They seem to have the ingredients - good solid stuff, but somehow it doesn't translate to the plate. The toast itself, for example. Nice wheat bread - thick slices and good quality - but it wasn't really toast. It was sort of warm and a little crunchy and one piece had a little tan to it - kind of - in the right light - but it was much more luke warm bread than anything resembling "toast". The cook also seems to have become distracted (Look! Shiny!) while buttering the bread - one piece had more (actually less) or less a stripe of butter. So - toast bad. On to the potatoes. Home fries. These might have been good if they'd been hot. They might have been ok had they been warm. But cool? No. Not good. Omelet - bacon and Gouda with tomato. It came out hot and was a decent omelet. It might have been a little better with a slightly more generous hand regarding the bacon and the Gouda - or the tomato for that matter - but comparatively speaking it was the star of the show. So - Toast is ok. But I can get OK a whole lot cheaper (and probably better) else where. Of course else where won't have the cutesy chic - but I can live without it, I think. read more

I stopped in here with a friend on Saturday morning. We got there fairly early for a Saturday, and had no wait at all. It was a beautiful morning, so we sat outside (and ended up with sunburn). They actually did a very nice job converting some space that was probably just an alley in between the two buildings into a cute little patio. It was far enough removed from Woodward that you didn't notice the traffic at all. Very cozy. I ordered their variation of eggs benedict. Instead of an English muffin, the eggs were served on a slice a French bread. I was skeptical, but the bread worked very well. The crust stayed firm even after the bread soaked up the egg yolk and hollandaise, which made for a nice mix of textures. The eggs were poached nearly perfectly, but not too perfectly (i.e., I don't think they cheated with an egg poacher). The only thing I did not understand was the decision to use tomato. It didn't add anything to the dish at all, and the tomatoes themselves were marginal. Excellent, locally grown, asparagus seems plentiful around here. I just don't see why they would use a vegetable that isn't really even in season yet. Oh well, minor quibble. I had to try a side of pancakes as well, and they were decent. They don't have anything on Pamela's back home in the 'burgh, or the Original Pancake House in Birmingham, though. Based on the food alone, I'd probably give this place a 3. However, our server was great, the patio was lovely, and it was overall just a very pleasant morning. So, 4 stars it is. I'll definitely be back. read more

Oh my...favorite! 1.they serve coffee in a french press and with normal, pleasant coffee cups. None of those gross, thick "toilet bowls for coffee" things they give you in most diners. 2.Flavored coffee is ideal! you can taste the flavor itself, it isn't only fragrant. No additional sugar like in most "flavored blends" 3.Their portions are large and food is fantastic. Meticulously chosen ingredients, everything in solid amounts. There was probably half a stick of brie in my omlette. They aren't skimping on you like every single other place I've been to. 4.They give you real bread on the side..Not a fried sponge but, fresh, real bread. downsides? theyre packed and you usually wait for a table. The only complaint I have about this place is that it is too small. And thankfully they are opening a larger second location in downtown Birmingham, so that won't even be an issue. From the coffee press coffee, to the many vegetarian options, to the BACON, I've never been unhappy after leaving. The service is quick with a smile. I LOVE the omelets here. Absolutely love going to breakfast/brunch on the weekends with my friends. I HATE the wait. I absolutely hate having to wait sometimes up to an hour to get seated. You wait so long that you get antsy, and feel like it's an eternity between the time you order your food and you get your food. With that being said, I love this place. I go back, even when I know I have to wait, sometimes in the hot summer sun, just to get my food. Maybe it's just because there aren't a ton of places that serve breakfast food in the area. It's not that the omelets are the best ever, it's just that they are so much better than many of the alternatives. I enthusiastically recommend this place to anyone looking for good breakfast fare, particularly yummy and inventive omelets. I've been to the Toast in Birmingham, but this was my first experience at the original location. A self-proclaimed not-such-a-breakfast person, I do enjoy a good egg Benedict from time to time. Actually, if you read through most of my breakfast reviews, I believe that 99% of them are Benedict-related. The Blackstone Benedict at Toast is quite delicious - might not be the best I've had, but it was certainly not a disappointment. It's almost a Benedict BLT if you will.... no L. Add that too their healthy and delicious serving of redskin potatoes and you've got quite the winning breakfast. My friend had a "delicious" mushroom omelette... which I am slightly skeptical of, but that would simply be rooted in my hatred for mushrooms. !!!! OH!!! And I almost forgot about my DEVINE carmel hot chocolate. SOOOOOO good and such a nice thing to sit down to on a cold day while waiting for my food! It's a bit cramped, I've shared a table with complete strangers, but it's a homey place and the servers are super accommodating - and they have coffee available during your wait. The coffee while you wait was also a nice touch and the waiter brought soy milk for my coffee. Unfortunately, we were seated next to an open door which made me cold. The waiter, fortunately, closed the door when my pushy friend acted pushy and asked her to shut it. The oatmeal was decent but could've used more fresh fruit, and the fruit salad was small and boring (grapes and melon?!!). The addition of an onion wedge surprise at the bottom of the fruit bowl added a spicy kick. But a bad spicy kick. That made my breath stink. The sausage was gooood. And the eggs over easy--also gooood. French toast was covered in goo. It had banana cream cheese which was gooey. We liked the Hello Kitty toaster on the wall. It was Hello Kitty-y-ish. Their Birmingham location is better for space for sure... Overall, breakfast to me is a favorite meal, but it's so close to Fly Trap, Mae's (which both had same space issues), we end up defaulting to One Eyed Betty's for breakfast on the weekend, which is much bigger, although quality do food and service really fall behind Toast. read more

Well, we decided to go on a Saturday morning, during a very busy time of year. We waited about 45 minutes to be seated for a table of 4. I was told however, that we would be waiting for atleast 30 minutes at Toast... so I was prepared for a bit of a wait. We were finally seated at a nice corner table by the bar. We all ordered some sort of egg dish. At our table of four we had the Parisian omelet, the chicken and waffles benny, the mushroom omelet and the veggie burrito. My parisian omelet was really delicious...it was just the right size... However, the serving size of the potatoes that I got was HUGE! I couldn't eat everything on my plate, not even close. I also ordered a virgin Bloody Mary and it was super spicy and hot... just the way I like my bloodys.... delish! Toast was a great spot (if you are willing to wait) for brunch... One order is good for 2-4 people. Super sweet, but super good. 4. Since I've gotten a sweet fix with the Cinnamon Toast Crunch, order something savory. My 2 favs are the Blackstone Benny - eggs Benedict on a baguette with awesome bacon, or if there are potato cakes on the specials menu - more like smashed up potato chunks, not shredded potatoes, but always so yummy!
