I discovered this mobile hot dog cart business on Facebook a month or so ago. I love a good hot…read moredog and I love a local business, so I knew I had to chase them down and try one for myself. The menu is simple but highly creative. You can build your own hot dog with a variety of toppings (classics, like ketchup or mustard, are free; premium, like peppers and onions or pineapple relish, are .75 cents) or you can order one of the chef's specialty dogs. By default, the dogs are enormous, savory, and all beef, but you can change to a sausage dog for an upcharge if that's more your flavor. Specialty dogs run between $7-$8, depending on the number and type of toppings. Each one is named after an iconic or well traveled road in Huntsville, which is a great tie-in to their name and theme. You can buy chips on the side, but we all found the dogs to be a more than ample lunchtime meal, and worth the price. My parents and I had the 431 (pineapple relish, bacon bits, peppers and onions), the South Parkway (a tricked out chili cheese), and the Monte Sano (brown mustard, kraut, pickle relish, bacon bits). Each one was delish, piled high with toppings, and made fresh to order. It's obvious the owner is thoughtful and particular about the toppings. The bacon bits were real, freshly chopped, crispy and fatty bacon -- not the kind you buy in a package at the store. Astoundingly, the buns held up to all the goodies piled on top. If you're too intimated to eat with your hands, forks and a multitude of napkins are at your disposal. The owner was there slinging dogs himself and we had a good time chatting with him. He and his wife run the operation by themselves, and it's nice to see and interact directly with the people who benefit from your business. He was very nice and did an excellent job preparing our food and telling us about his product. You can reliably find their weekly schedule posted on Facebook. They're often at Parkway Scrubs for lunch and also appear at local breweries and events for dinner, but don't take my word for it -- find their page and hunt down this cool little cart.

Goodness gracious! These are not your run-of-the-mill (aka ain't your granny's) hot dogs and brats…read more In a word: unique, savory, sweet, smoky, delicious. Ok, that was 5 words. And I'll bet you can find even more descriptive accolades in your own vocab as soon as you try them. Bite into the tender and unusual diamond-scored nine inch (!) dog and you'll immediately realize this is neither the texture nor flavor of a traditional dog. It's something else altogether. I chose the "Whiskey Dog", soaked in Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey Whiskey, topped with grilled onions, shredded cheese, and their "signature sauce". And, FYI there are lots of other toppings from which to choose.) I truly have no words to adequately describe the combination of flavors and textures....save for umami, sweet, crunchy, hint of smooth, melting cheese shards, grilled to oh-such-goodness. I had a side of one of my favorites: yuca fries. Oh!!! Take me back to my very early days as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Colombia! Crispy fry-like staves perfectly seasoned on the outside and tender-hot pillowy inside. I simply cannot wait to return and try some of the other incredible offerings. (Right now I'm thinking Bison Dog - another favorite carnivore treat of mine....maybe a 'brisket' brat.) You know, maybe I'll order for the whole family and we'll have a share-a-thon of these delightful creations from Jim and Stella (owners) at Smokey Doggs. Update: Today I had a bison, dog with grilled onions, sweet, relish, and their signature Colombian special sauce. Oh my! So good. Please sir, may I have another...(or two!)
