My friend took me to breakfast at Tobey's Cafe, a place I had never heard of before. He knew about it because he's golfed at the course before, and honestly, food at golf courses is usually pretty good, so I wasn't surprised that I enjoyed breakfast here! It's definitely not a fancy place, but the view makes up for it. You get a beautiful view of part of the golf course with downtown San Diego in the background, which makes for such a nice, relaxing breakfast. My friend and I both ordered the Putter Omelette. He had his with hash browns and wheat toast, while I went with the O'Brien potatoes and an English muffin. The omelette was packed with veggies, and whatever cheese they use in it was really good! Everything was filling, fresh, and exactly what you want from a hearty breakfast. For two breakfast plates and two coffees, our total was under $55, which I thought was pretty reasonable, especially with the view. Our waitress, Natalie, was very kind and attentive. The entire staff was friendly and constantly walking around checking on tables, topping off waters, and making sure no coffee cup stayed empty for long. I go for the view! Went for brunch and they have everything from simple eggs and bacon to chicken fried steak and biscuits and gravy! Was excellently cooked and staff was friendly. Unfortunately I went on a Sunday when the place was packed with inebriated golfers so the place was tight and LOUD. Due to the timing we had to wait over an hour for our food to come out which was just pancakes eggs and meat. I can't fault them though if they are busy. I'll come back at a different time to try the lunch menu and see how the service is then. I would recommend just not for Sunday brunch or you will most likely have a wait. read more

Saturday, 2-14-2026: Stopped here for lunch before going to the commissary at 32nd Street. It was a beautiful, sunny day but a bit breezy. Had it not been we would have opted to dine outside. There was no wait when we arrived so we were seated right away. We enjoyed the amazing views from our window. Looking around it wasn't a very big eatery but there was indoor & outdoor dining. There is also a counter out front. The interior was bright and clean but could use updating. Our server was very friendly and efficient. I had the grilled cheese on sourdough with tots while hubby wanted the tuna salad on wheat with tots. We enjoyed our yummy meals and it prepared us for a commissary trip. Never a good idea to shop for food on an empty stomach! They serve good old-fashioned comfort food. We will definitely return! read more

Food is average but there are two things that elevate this spot and make it a worthy visit even if you aren't golfing: The salsa (you have to ask for it) The view on the patio. One of THE BEST if not the best view of any spot in San Diego. Really a hidden gem for those in the know. Alright, I was purposefully not going here making assumptions based on anything attached to something else. You know what I mean. Hotel restaurants are always a scam. I was wrong. Great diner, such a great diner! The driving rage was closed so we had time to kill and figured we might was well give it a shot. Looking over the menu it had all the classics. I went for a random choice at 6:30am and got a sandwich. I figured it had an egg which makes it breakfast. They didn't have any tater tots and asked what I wanted instead, so obviously I asked if I can have it with hash browns. Vibe is the word for this place. Good service, very unique cabin vintage feel. It's all out of place almost like the city just threw it together and they made it work. That's.. wait, yeah, that's exactly what's happening here but I'm here for it. Haha. Read a number of good reviews and decided to make our way over for brunch. The cafe is small and has an old school vibe to it. Has a number of barstools in the front with a counter and dining room with tables and booths. Also has an outside dining area for guests. Rebecca greeted us warmly and laughed when we told her that it was our first time in and no we aren't from out of town, lol! She quickly reassured us that she's heard that before and has been told their cafe is somewhat of a hidden gem. After a few minutes of looking over the menu I decided on the calamari steak with O'Brien potatoes and side of sourdough toast. Hubs went with the hamburger steak, tater tots, salad w/blue cheese dressing and sourdough toast. Both meals were brought out hot and tasted great! The calamari was thin (but not overly so) and lightly breaded, crispy and tender at the same time. Delicious! The potatoes were fried just right, crispy and had grilled onions with bell peppers throughout, yum! Hubs ate all of his food and said he'd order it again. Had very early dental appointments, so we had to skip breakfast. Afterwards, we ended up at Tobey's. Never had a bad meal here. A great place to eat after a round of golf. Been here many times. He often walks the 9. He had the Homemade Corned Beef Hash & Eggs. The corned beef doesn't get any better than this. Not greasy, and not crazy salty... and plenty of it. The over-easy eggs... whites fried perfectly, with a runny yolk for dipping toast. Too many places leave the whites runny, or if they manage to cook them, the yolk is over cooked. I had the Chicken Fried Steak & Eggs. It came with a choice of the O'Brien Potatoes. They are so good. Not overcooked like many places that offer taters other than hash browns. I've rarely had a Chicken Fried Steak that I've loved. Most places, the coating is more like an oven baked breading, or very greasy pan fried breading. Not really like fried chicken. Tobey's coating IS like real fried chicken. Even crunchy to a degree like real fried chicken. It's been a long time since I've had this dish anywhere and it will be one of my breakfast "go-to's" now. Next time we are planning on doing the same two dishes and splitting everything between us. The coffee is the best we've had from a restaurant. We no longer use sugar in our coffee, and we make our own drip coffee at home with organic beans. It's not bitter or acidic. Tobey's coffee is just like that. The service is attentive and pleasant, and the bathrooms are clean. Parking lot at the top can be full when it's busy with golfers. And of course the view of the golf course from the cafe (inside or out) is beautiful. Here we are in mid December and 68°f and mostly sunny. Gorgeous day. We are so blessed. read more

Clean and a gem with great views!! Came For lunch because they serve LIVER AND ONIONS!!!! My favorite!! Ingrid waited on us with a smile. Okay, so seriously, this place is REALLY GOOD. I'm coming back for my next liver and onions fix!! I even had EXTRA grilled onions left after I finished my liver. That NEVER happens!!! Unusually run out so I have to ration them with each bite. My husband had the ground beef smothered in grilled onions. We both chose their homemade potato salad for our potato option and it was one of the best I've had. And I make a mean potato salad so I'm very picky. Then we got a bread choice and we chose the biscuit. OM Goodness!! Like a dessert and so warm and soft and yummy with butter and honey slathered all over it. We sat looking at the beautiful green lush golf course and downtown San Diego while we ate. I used to enjoy eating at Tobey's, but today's experience was very disappointing. First, my omelet and toast were stone cold when they finally arrived. The toast was inedible. Second, their new policy is to add a surcharge if you use a credit card, instead of building it into the menu price. To add insult to injury, THEY DO NOT ACCEPT CASH any more. I had a really disappointing experience here. The service was extremely slow -- people were actually leaving before even getting their drinks. When my food finally came, it had hair in it, which was absolutely disgusting. The place felt cramped and uncomfortable, with staff constantly bumping into my chair and even pulling my hair as they passed by. The waitress also reached right in front of my face to hand out centerpieces, which felt rude and unprofessional. On top of that, the food had no flavor or seasoning at all. Who doesn't love a good view, good food and good service? Shoot the girls at Tobey's cafe are on it! So kind so attentive and it's such a cute little spot. Parking, there's two lots on the right side of the golf course. Kid friendly, oh yeah. Clean? Very! The busser's are on it once a party leaves that way it a available. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. Recently they added shade to the outside so I'd highly recommend sitting outside for the view. My son and I are regulars here, we get the pancakes and a side of O'Brien potatoes! Literally the best! You should definitely try them. Fluffiest pancakes and the French toast is so yum! They have mimosas and the girls are always on it for refilling the coffee. This is your old school traditional breakfast spot. Also serves breakfast until closing. This little spot might be a best kept secret to San Diego except that there seems to always be a line to get a table. So somehow words got out. I've only been in Sunday's for brunch. The staff is always in the weeds but works hard to make your experience a good one. My recommendation is to order whatever corn beef concoction they have on the menu. It's amazing.
