(I'm still a work in progress...) I've never lifted weights before. But, now I can't hammer it home loud enough for women: weight training will change your body - for the better! Austin, my trainer, showed me that... the proof is easy to see when you stand before the mirror and see muscle definition, when you feel better about your body, when you walk with more confidence, and when your clothes start to fit differently. Not that I was ever overweight. I was just carrying around a little extra insulation. And let's face it, you don't really need that in Phoenix. So, I started training with Austin in Feb of 2007 and I haven't stopped. At Peak Performance, he challenges me. He devises the workouts and is happy to explain technique, the body's response, health, nutrition, the in's and out's of setting up different routines, the importance of stability, how to strength train, how to balance cardio with yoga... I can't even begin to explain how much I've learned. Nor did I ever believe I'd love working out with a trainer like I do. He knows his stuff and he seems to truly care about his clients. He likes to understand what motivates you so he can work with your best qualities. Even better, he wants you to learn, so that you can workout on your own and continue to see results. For me, I'm an ex-athlete (will always be an athlete at heart) and he knows this. That's why he likes to mix up the routine and throw in some stability things, to improve my balance and let me escalate to more challenging workouts that top-notch athletes do to stay fit and on top of their game. I love it! The gym itself offers a full range of equipment - plenty to go through an hour's workout and "feel the burn." There's enough that you'll never have to do the same ol' routine twice, if you didn't want to. But, you're not there on your own. That's what's so great. You're there with a trainer who knows the equipment, knows your goals, knows what motivates you, knows how to craft a routine that'll help you make progress (whether it's to burn fat, gain strength, work towards something realistic). I really like this gym. The location is in the LGO area - kind of easy to miss, if you don't know what you're looking for, but there's a small marquee that says "Peak Performance Personal Training" before the entrance on the West side of 40th street JUST PASSED Campbell. I had just gotten certified at my old gym in Madison, WI - the Monkey Bar Gymnasium - as a 'Natural Trainer', so I set out looking for a place where I might fit in. After talking to all the major gyms, as well as a handful of smaller ones, the guys at Peak Performance Personal Training were the ONLY guys I felt comfortable working with. They - Tony and Dan - work out of a smallish studio / gym in Arcadia, and to make a long story short - they're awesome. They're real, they're fun, and they'll make sure that you accomplish any goal you set out to. The studio is comfy, the music doesn't get beamed in on a satellite, and there's a park across the street that they like to use for workouts. They'll work around your schedule, and they'll help you look and feel great. I still plan on working with them in the future, but I'm a little too busy to do so at the moment... however I'm not too busy to recommend them - and I recommend them highly.

But when head to head with the average Joe, even Mr. No Shirt, Pristine Tan, Joe Six Pack Abs, I can usually sloth-jog to the top of a hill faster. And trust me, male or female, young or old, if you're on one of the valley hiking trails at the same time I am, we are fucking RACING. Even if you don't know it. Even if you laugh at my paunch and short shorts and their biting incongruence with even the most generously interpreted mores of polite society. Even if you don't care. You're on my radar. I am hunting you. If today were a 1000 years ago, you'd be dead because I'd catch you and kill you and probably eat or try to eat your brains. You're from another tribe and you are meat. Note: I will leave you be when you exercise with Matt. My hiking, no surprise, is in no truly logical way related to The Jarvster. However, I believe in metaphysics and quantum mechanics and with what little additional I understand of string theory, I know, capital K Know, that EVERYTHING is related. So here's the illogical flow that quantum leapt me into the (dis)abusive relationship I now find myself enjoying myself in with ("I wish I knew how to quit you!") Matt Jarvis: When one can run up hills, one thinks they're in shape. At least decent cardiovascular shape. And then they are introduced to Matt Jarvis, by a loved one no less, on a shiny Saturday morning, where they have to sit down perfectly still in the middle of class because they're going to puke. Now, don't mistake my almost puking with any sadism on the part of Mr. Jarvis. Instead, assign it to the frailties zigg-zagging through my life force, which my perfect specimen of a lady friend must endure because I convinced her I was worthy of her love. Which is to say I'm not in the shape I thought I was in. And pushed too hard. My bad. He didn't make me feel like an asshole about it. At all. Out of all the trainers and yogis and typologies of exercise endeavors I've tried throughout the years, including all of them, nothing has made me as sore and perplexed as Matt Jarvis' training program. It's fascinating, really. In one now infamous moment during the middle of an exercise resembling Spiderman crawling up the side of a building, I explained to Matt that I understood, based on my body's reaction that the exercise was, in practice, difficult, but I couldn't for the life of me explain why. This is the thing. I feel like nothing is too crazy, individually. But his workout has this additive effect that I've never experienced with anything else. And I think it's probably the most genius exercise regimen I've ever encountered. Eight-fucking-day soreness. Tell your mom about that shit. It's real. It's chariots of fire. It's Rocky. It's amazing. You can stop reading here if you're trying to decide whether to use Matt as I have said my peace but I have a couple more things to say. My girlfriend, who has been training with Matt longer than I have, does more weight than I do... Which is only emasculating insofar as I happen to know she is attracted to muscular arms, which I do not have. Which is where Matt comes in. Except she exercises with him more than I do so her arms keep getting stronger. And the cycle continues. Someday. Pray for me. Also, I want you to think about personal trainers in the following manner: 1) drill sergeant; 2) loving father figure supportive character; 3) tomboy with the exceptional body who is ambiguously lesbian; 4) dude who's on his phone when he should be spotting you; 5) meat head who, while muscular, is not cut in any way; and 6) truly inspirational character who needs his own television show. Matt is 2 and 6. Sometimes, when I'm trudging up the mountain, I think, Matt's going to be so proud when I can get through x,y,z exercise without having to go rest in front of the fan. Or gulp water. Or cry silently. There is no judgment. He's conversational. His workouts are like ASU. You can go there and party your ass off or you can work with Nobel laureates and change the goddamned world. Totally up to you. The opportunity is there to change your life. Do it for me if not for you.

I train with Shane each week and he truly is so knowledgeable in movement and kinesiology. He always explains the movement, what muscle/s to engage and is by your side watching to make sure you are doing things correctly while also helping to push you to new limits you never knew you were capable of. My husband had similar frustrations with working out. Luckily, he found Underground and we both enrolled and I'm so happy we did. I cannot say enough positive things. Our trainer (Danny) and coach (Shane) are both awesome. Danny has been fantastic with how positive and patient he is, especially with someone like me who's never even picked up weights in a gym before. He keeps workouts interesting and challenging. Shane helps provide accountability outside of the gym especially with eating; turns out I wasn't eating enough! Both are extremely knowledgeable and happy to pass along their knowledge. As for the gym itself. We signed up for semi-private sessions, but you get a lot of 1-on-1 time and it never really feels crowded. You never have to fight over equipment and everything is constantly wiped down. Also, scheduling sessions is easy and flexible. Honesty, my husband and I really look forward to going to the gym, it's actually fun, like really fun...not a chore. We've both changed physically, but also mentally.
