i adore this spot - the portions are huge, the pricing is reasonable, and the food is delicious. the crispy tofu in szechuan sauce is delightfully crispy outside but creamy inside, with a little bit of mala (numbing tingly spice). and the "clams" (mushrooms) are packed with flavor. it's unpretentious inside (probably 5-6 tablespoons) and the staff were super helpful when i asked them what they recommended. i think this is going to be a local favorite for me.

Tofubox has always been a staple of mine. Vegan and a well balanced meal for anyone who wants a taste of Chinese food. This place offers crispy tofu, spicy tofu, braised tofu, and any sorts of tofu imaginable hence its name, Tofubox. The ambience is very quiet with a couple of tables and retro chairs. There's a rail on your way up to the counter and ordering is pretty simple. They have lunch box sets where you can choose which tofu and rice you want. They have purple or brown rice for you to choose, which is very healthy. I usually get the crispy tofu lunch box set with purple rice. This set includes sweet potatoe fries, purple rice, crispy tofu, broccoli, and seitan! So healthy! I love the purple rice a lot and how it's cooked! Not too dry or wet. The tofu is crispy and skin is always separating. Fries are kind of on the soft side. Wish it was harder! Broccoli is steamed so it's very healthy! Overall, a good healthy option for anyone who is trying to maintain their health and weight.

    Mock beef summer rolls

Out and about in Williamsburg before hitting Haven, my friend and I decided to fuel up on some vegetarian dim sum. Tofubox is geared towards takeout/delivery, with just a couple small tables inside. The menu is pretty expansive, covering meatless versions of typical dim sum staples. We snagged an order of sweet potato spring rolls, mock beef summer rolls, and a steamed dumpling combo. This turned out to be considerably more food than we expected, but made for good leftovers. The spring rolls were piping hot and crisp, filled with a a springy filling not unlike mochi and covered with shredded coconut. The summer rolls were fresh, but packed too loosely, leading the rolls to fall apart. The dumplings had a tasty, savoury hit with fillings of veggies (bok choi + shitake), tofu, and egg & tomato. Worth a repeat visit

Opted for the double-cooked pork this time, and it offered a stunning impersonation of the original, with an assertive medium-spice sauce. Tofubox isn't content to get by with Nice Try Vegan Chicken Nuggets. Exploring vegetarian spots for curiosity rather than necessity, I've often encountered situations where, say, a jackfruit sandwich is just fine, but I'm still full after spending $20. Tofubox, however, offers a surprisingly good value proposition. If you're reading this review you're not a regular yet and thus should start out with a box set, preferably Box Set B.

My favorite place in the neighborhood to get vegetarian food! Super tasty, affordable, huge portions, friendly service....I mean, there is nothing missing from this experience. I highly recommend the kung pao chicken bento box. As a meat eater, I did not miss the meat.

Some of the best seitan I have ever had. I was also excited to see vegan soup dumplings because I wasn't sure if I'd ever get to try them. They were delicious. The mochi dumplings were also awesome - hot and light and flavorful. The service was very good and food was excellent. No notes. Everything was delicious and perfect. The iced tea was also enjoyable. This was an unplanned stop - just looking for something near Metropolitan Station and this was perfect. 10 out of 10, would recommend.

This is a super unassuming place in Williamsburg and it surprisingly has a small indoor seating area. Everything is super informal here - everything is served in disposable plastic containers and the waitress serves both the tables and the take out counter. Everything is almost vegan (including the noodles and "meat"). It had a great MaLa flavor and I liked everything we had. Pretty cheap overall too for the portions. Sweet Potato Spring Rolls ($6.50) - comes with 4 pieces. Honestly looked unappetizing when it came, but was actually great. Outside is perfectly crispy and the sweet potato on the inside was soft. Best eaten warm though, the texture is off when it cools down Double cooked pork slices ($13.50), crispy tofu box ($14.50) - these honestly tasted the same but with different proteins. The crispy tofu was so good, very flavorful and crisp. Buddha's Delight ($13.50) - this was your standard pan fried noodles. The flavor was good.

    Alan S.

Excellent takeout option in Williamsburg! I love the vegetarian-friendly variation on the bento box theme, and all of the many varieties of tofu and seitan I've tried here have been delicious. My favorite was the tofu puff - so soft that it melts in your mouth! Plus it's served with my favorite mushroom, "mu-er" (wood ear). Although if you feel like a guilty pleasure on a given evening, the cherry-red General Tso's tofu is your move. Drunken seitan is also perfectly crispy and a repeat order.

I too am Chinese and love eating animal protein, but you'll want to set your prejudices aside for Tofubox because they are making delicious, healthy Chinese dishes. I liked the mapo tofu and Buddha's delight. Great service too!

This place is AMAZING. Beyond any other vegan asian cuisine I've had. I just wish their menu was more clear about what was vegan and such.

I was super excited to come here for a quick lunch because of the rave reviews. Maybe I didn't order the right thing, but I am disappointed. I got the Box A spicy ssamjang with braised tofu and what I got was just a box of sautéed vegetables and flavorless soft tofu. No sauce, no nothing. As you can see from the picture, where is the ssamjang? Where is that glorious thick sauce? The tofu was barely coated in anything, so nothing had much flavor. While the food wasn't bad, it wasn't worth the trip or money. The rest of the menu looked good though, and judging by other reviews maybe I came on an off day. Who knows.

Are all the vegan items orange chicken, loaded fries, and tofu curry or are there other items that just aren't labeled vegan by chance?

I just visited the restaurant and almost all of the dishes are vegan, except a few dishes that include eggs. Hope this answers your question.

The most recent time, I was here for their dim sum brunch, which is either $36 for AYCE plus $2 for tea, or they price each thing individually. It was a bit annoying that the tea was not included, but at least both the Oolong and Chrysanthemum teas were good quality and readily filled. Service in general was pretty fast and frequently checked on our large semi- private table to see if we needed anything else to order or more tea. The dim sum selection is a bit smaller than many of the traditional dim sum spots, but the overall quality was excellent, with a couple of definite highlights and some more unique dishes such as dumplings with pickled shrimp, crawfish, or Taizhou rice along with Ningbo wontons. In general, I would say that the wrappers were properly thin and everything was filled generously. The aforementioned Pickled Pepper Shrimp Dumplings were one of the highlights. The slightly spicy and sour pickles made it taste very light and paired nicely with the plump shrimp. In terms of other shrimp dim sum, their version of Har Gow/Crystal Shrimp Dumplings included a little bit of sweet crab for an extra touch. It was also tasty. I also liked the Ningbo wontons, filled with a variety of ingredients including minced pork, dried shrimp, yard long beans, pickled vegetables, bamboo shoots, and others. It had a wonderful mix of textures with some interesting crunchy notes. Another unique option mentioned is their Crawfish Dumplings, which are very noticeable compared to the other dumplings due to their bright red color. I appreciated the spiciness but found these a tad fishy with a thicker wrapper than most, but others loved these and ordered more. For more standard dumplings, their Xiao Long Bao/XLB were pretty good, and they had a tasty version of Sticky Rice Pork Siu Mai. The Baked Pork Buns were good as they were not too sticky sweet. Finally, there was a decent version of Pork Dumplings in Chili Oil. Non-dumpling highlights included their excellent turnip cakes along with steamed spare ribs, chicken feet, and a particularly tasty version of steamed beef tripe with satay sauce. I would skip the Beef Short Ribs With Black Pepper, which had good flavor but was way too chewy. I know someone else ordered the spring rolls, but I don't remember trying them. They also apparently now have a Ningbo speciality called Shi Bing Tong, but I don't remember ordering it. Someone else got their simple and tasty porridge/congee, only available traditionally with pork and century eggs, and enjoyed it. I tried a bit, and it was indeed good. Desserts included a tasty Crispy Durian Pastry, alright Sesame Balls, a good Pineapple Bun/Bolo Bao, and Custard Buns, which everyone loved, but they had a cuttlefish ink shine, so I couldn't try them. This is a fantastic, reasonably priced AYCE Dim Sum. Would recommend it if they still offer this deal.

The duo tables were a bit small and the tables are slightly close together, but overall it's spacious. Two washrooms (bathroom, restroom for search terms) available. Six Flavors XLB - love the variety pick as an option! Color wasn't a gimmick, as they actually tasted different. Gourd was the most unique, being a vegetable base. Signature and crab tasted pretty standard with other spots, but the other four were more unique. Signature XLB - a classic pork soup, rich in flavor and hearty. Taste was on point but they're pretty sizable and have lots of soup. One of our XLB had enough soup for two spoonfuls and we wanted bigger spoons but then the others were definitely less. Mochi & Sesame XLB - a dessert XLB always hits no matter how the others taste. These had a strong sesame flavor, very rich. However the mochi was a bit funky texture wise, just getting stuck in teeth. Definitely get a dessert XLB, is a good option but I'm almost positive they're all good, so no strong bias.

Flavor matched the presentation too. Service was solid overall, no real issues there. The only downside was with a deal they were advertising ("3 for $33"). It was shown on their website and even posted outside the restaurant, which was actually one of the main reasons we chose the spot. When we tried to use it, we were told they weren't honoring it that night and that the deal had been causing them to lose money. I understand adjusting pricing if something isn't working, but if that's the case, the promotion should be removed or clearly communicated ahead of time.
