A very busy environment, but overall had a nice time. The appetizers were delicious and the cocktails were, too! The cocktails do take a few minutes to mix and the time you have is limited to 75 or 90 minutes so you have to keep that in mind if you want to have more than 1 and not be rushed. Tried the kimchi dumpling and classic ramen. The ramen was great! The tonkotsu soup was great! Rich and flavorful but not too salty. When well with the ramen which was capable of bringing soup up together. The Onsen egg was soooo soft and I did not even know how it could hold the shape while being so soft. Personally I would prefer egg more well cooked but I guess many would also like this extreme soft and smooth texture. The pork was more like slow cooked pork or pulled pork. Flavor wise it was good. Kimchi and pork dumplings was a little disappointing. It was too salty for me and I did not see a lot pork inside. My cousin suggested this place after seeing it on Food Network. We arrived on Saturday at 3:30 but was told they opened at 5 so we hung out on H street and went back at 4:50- it was already a line. At 5 o'clock sharp a guy came out to take names. We were the 10th group in line and was seated within 25 mins. The restaurant is small-like seriously small. And the food comes out fast. I'm not a ramen expert, but, good food is good food. I can taste the freshness of the ingredients and the broth...amazing! I had the Toki Classic. While no one rushed us the atmosphere is an in and out type of one. In our 40 mins there we had two different sets of guest to our left and right so if you want to eat and lounge around to chitchat this is not the place. But if you just want some good ramen then come by. Ohhhh and I loved the playlist on our visit-someone was clearly a Missy Elliot fan! read more

I honestly don't understand why this restaurant has such high reviews. The first time I tried them was for takeout ramen years ago and it was just ok. I came here a few months ago to dine-in with friends and I'm even less impressed. The host and hostess did not make us feel welcomed, more annoyed that 2 of our party members were running a little late and the first thing they told us was that they don't seat incomplete parties and that our time limit until they gave up our seats started 3 minutes ago. Luckily (maybe unluckily??) our friends made it just in time and we were seated right by the kitchen which was pretty terrible because it's like sitting in the hallway between the host stand, the bathrooms and the kitchen where all the food is coming out and dirty dishes are being brought back. It was incredibly difficult to hear one another and our host/waiter. Towards the end of our meal the area behind us is also where diners needed to wait to be seated and getting bumped in the back by purses and waitstaff got straight up annoying. And what really irritated me about our waiter was we'd barely be able to hear him ask if we needed anything as he walked past us to get orders from the kitchen as if he was doing the bare minimum to check off a box saying he did check in on us during our meal. Didn't even stop to ask like every other server on earth does. Heck, even Chick-fil-A has their servers come over to the table. As for the food itself, it was good but not great. For the price, I'm annoyed I needed to assemble my own pork bun appetizer. I know this sounds pretentious but with the area we're sat in, the attitude of the hosts/waiter, and the price of all the dishes I expect my dining experience to be more...accommodating?? I'm not sure if that's the right word but it's closest to how I feel. Long story short: I would recommend Jinya over here. Toki isn't even in my top 5 ramen restaurants in the DMV area. read more

Finally my search for an authentic ramen place has come to an end. I have found it in TOKI. Rich broth with soft egg and freshly made noodles....yum!!! A bowl of ramen starts at $11 then any extras if desired is priced $5 and up. Service is quite attentive and friendly. Store now opens for lunch starting from 1130am-230am. Come early to grab a spot. Toki Underground is the first restaurant I take any of my friends who are visiting from out of town. It's one of the most unique and coolest spots in all of DC. It's a little bit hidden, quaint and cozy. There is nothing cookie-cutter about the place. If you have to wait for a table, you can go downstairs to The Pug and have a drink. The cocktails are amazing and the ramen is the best I've ever had in the city. They also have vegetarian and vegan options. We always like trying new places. We made a reservations, would be good idea since place can be packed. The service was good. We got the kimchi/pork dumplings as a starter and they were on point. So, the classic dc ramen debate: vegan edition. So far we've had bantam king, daikaya, and Toki Underground. Toki Underground was delicious!! We had the cauliflower bao buns, vegan ramen, and sake flight and all were wonderful- although the bao buns were AMAZING. Seriously, I want a hoagie sized sake batter bao bun everyday forever. As for the ramen, it was fun and yummy! Had lots of fun ingredients, loved the kale in there and the noodles were delish. However I felt like it didn't all come together as a cohesive bowl. Still delicious though don't get me wrong. Back to the classic dc ramen war: daikaya still rules the world of vegan ramen - but Toki Underground is still more than worth a trip (even if just for the buns!!) read more

The 1.5 hour wait (which was easily passed at the Belgian bar next door) didn't put a damper on my impression of Toki Underground. I was fortunate enough to be seated at the counter near Toki's small kitchen, so I loved seeing the chefs preparing the ramen and other offerings. The atmosphere is lively, and the service is average. I had the Taipei Curry Chicken, which was excellent. The broth was rich and flavorful, and the portions were ginormous! I'd love to return to this place and try other ramens and their appetizers. I don't know how fitting Toki is for a big group or for people in a rush, but for a solo eater or couple it's perfect! read more

I've been here multiple times before and always loved it, but my last visit was just unpleasant. The hosts are super rude, but the food is fantastic and the space is really cool, so I keep returning. However, this time, my ramen was oddly crunchy, and I ended up finding about 5 medium sized pieces of egg shell in there. I picked some of them out and then didn't really wanna continue eating the bowl because it just left an uneasy feeling with finding so many of them. I let my server know and he just said "yeah that's from the soft boiled egg" like they were SUPPOSED to be there?? I pretty much stopped getting service after that and then received the bill with nothing taken off and an automatic gratuity. The flavors are usually amazing so I'm really disappointed that this experience will probably hinder me from coming back. read more

You know, Toki was a little on the hype side for me. The broth was amazing. The noodles were nice and chewy and delicious.... but I got the vegetarian and I think I got like 2 pieces of tofu, and a bunch of interesting veggies...but I still felt like it was mostly broth. This is not pho! I want more 'stuff'! It was a very tiny and cozy spot (maybe seats like 20 at a time max), but I loved the interesting "comic" decor and interesting lighting (note the weird tint to my pictures). The bathrooms are strange...you have to stick your hand into a mysterious area for the water spout, haha. But very representative of a small Tokyo space with limited room. and I also liked the Japanese candies upon bringing the bill. I liked them :D I wouldn't opt for the 2-hour wait next time (we did go elsewhere and come back, and they were accommodating even though were were 15 min late coming back). Cathy K is right. Toki didn't quite live up to the hype (I see her review on the right side as I am typing mine up, lol). We started off with the fried chicken steamed buns and the wings. I wouldn't order those again, especially the wings. They were so salty that we couldn't even eat more than one each. I went with the toki classic and added pork cheek and pork belly. I appreciate that the noodles taste fresh, but to be honest, I care more about the meats... and with any ramen shop, their meats really aren't that special. The broth was average. For being a prolific eater...I can't believe it took me so long to get to Toki. But this year, I'm seeking out new restaurants instead of my old favorites so I trekked to Toki one Friday. I had heard that lining up was a must so I got there 15 minutes before 5, which, to my surprise, meant I was the first person in line. Wahoo! So we got seated immediately. We started with the Alt-4 (?) cocktail - not my favorite, but I'm not the biggest cocktail fan. The pickle appetizer was light and refreshing. But the ramen! SO GOOD. I got the kimchi ramen which I was in love with. I savored every bite. I need to figure out how to cook my egg like they cook theirs. Toki is difficult to spot, and very easily missed unless one knows what to look for exactly. The space inside is charming, with a small seating area and narrow seats that make everyone sit very close, but is somehow not uncomfortable. Dumpling appetizer: the dumplings were fried, with a particularly toasted bottom that was reminiscent of Korean fried dumplings. The pieces were in a sour sauce with herbs heaped over. A great start to the meal! Shiobuta: this was my favorite part of the meal. A tender, steaming pork belly piece was wrapped in some sort of pickled herbs, honey, and leaf, which was quite delicious. Red miso ramen: I thought the broth was quite good, and I particularly loved all the kale in the broth that soaked up all the flavor. However, I wasn't a fan of the poached eggs, it just felt a little undercooked. I personally prefer soft-boiled eggs in ramen, since it's all broth already. read more

I love the location of this place! H St continues to be one OF DCs hidden gems, so we are very much fans of the neighborhood. I've lived in DC for 6 years and never had it in me to eat at this spot. I actually tried 5 years ago and failed and never thought I'd ever make it in. Fast forward 6 years later on a rainy Sunday, I asked my fiance if we could go right as doors opened and we got the first seat in! 15 minutes into our meal, and the room was PACKED. Even on a hot humid rainy Sunday, this restaurant, now a Michelin star restaurant, was packed. That says a lot about the joint. Culturally - this place is dope. They have shokugeki anime lamenated across their table, skateboards boarded up for your feet (which I have in my office as well), and dope toys on their walls + manga. + Their music was on point. The vibe here is everything. Now pair that up with the Taiwanese/Japanese food and I'm at home. I grew up in Japan as military brat so a lot of the food took me back, which was crazy considering a lot of the flavors were Taiwanese. Eating here brought back Amazing memories and I kind of regret not trying harder to come eat here 5 years ago but it's all good. I'm happy I tried it out. 10/10 would recommend and no it's not the hype. read more

It is not a large place but I like that honestly. I would go back. I had a noodle dish that I can't pronounce the name of but it came with the broth in a separate bowl. It was soooo delish. I also like that they text you when your table is ready. My friend and I went down the street to a bar and by the time we got down there, our table was ready for us. We came by for dinner on Thursday night and there was a 45 minute wait, so we put our name down and grabbed a drink at the bar downstairs per the recommendation of the hostess. Upon being seated (counter style seating, only), our server promptly came over and took our orders. We opted for the fried chicken buns to start, which you assemble yourself. They were so tasty- the chicken was crispy, glazed perfection. My boyfriend exclaimed (direct quote), "I want to bathe in that chicken." We both ordered the Toki Classic ramen and it was delicious. The ginger really stood out to me (in a good way) and the kale worked well in it. If you like your ramen spicy, ask for a side of endorphin sauce for an extra kick. The real icing on the cake for me was their awesome music - there's something about listening to "Candy Shop" by 50 Cent while eating ramen that really elevates the experience. read more

This is a small yet lively urban place! I like it for the cozy seating, and the quick and efficient service. Of course the BEST part of all is the food. If you are a ramen connoisseur, then you will no be disappointed. I have only had ramen maybe twice but it wasn't anything compared to it so far. The drinks are delicious as well, I got too wrapped up in what I had I forgot to try the sake which they also have. I've been reluctant to try steamed buns because I was afraid I wouldn't like them. I tried them. Omg! They were so warm and soft and deliciously seasoned. Don't be afraid to try anything on that menu! Now this ramen ok, this raaaaameeeen!!! I ordered the chicken curry one and it was so good! You are given chopsticks and what I assume is a ramen spoon for the large bowl of ramen I received. (You may want to share or you may have leftovers) Now, I don't know how to use chopsticks and I am sure I hold them wrong, but when that broth hits your mouth you will figure it out. I could have cared less how silly I looked. I noticed no one as I was concentrating on getting as much noodle and fresh herbs and whatever else was in that damn bowl to care. First off, I think I can say that this is the best ramen I've had in the DMV area. We had reservations for 5:00pm and we were promptly seated. Our waiter immediately asked if we have food allergies which I really appreciated. We got the fried chicken steam buns, kimchi ramen, and mazeman chicken. All really really delicious. I would have walked past this place 10x had it not been for the kind gentlemen who noticed my confusion. Toki is in a very unassuming space on a block with very little signage. You walk in and up a flight of stairs to a small, kinda dark place with a definite hipster vibe to it. Since we were in a rush we opted for takeout and got the chicken curry ramen, toki classic ramen and on order of dumplings. When you say ramen, I think about the Maruchen brand that came in shrimp, chicken, and beef flavors. I grew up on those. If I was feeling fancy then I'd eat the cup of noodle brand but that was the extent of my ramen knowledge. This place takes ramen to a whole 'nother level. Knowing that Toki Underground is notorious for long lines because of the small space, I arrived about 15 minutes before opening and there was no line yet. Once they opened, I went up the stairs and checked-in at the front. They won't seat you until the whole party is present, so they have a semi-designated waiting area (against the wall, near the bar by the bathrooms) to stand while you wait. Fun fact: they also take reservations on their website. Once my friend arrived, we were seated immediately at the bar. Service was quick and attentive. I ordered the Toki Classic ($14) which came with braised pork, greens, soft egg, pickled ginger, and topped with scallions, beni shoga, sesame seeds, and nori. This was a satisfying bowl of ramen! I am a fan of their rich and creamy broth, and liked the consistency, flavor, and bite of the ramen. The only reason they don't get five stars is because I'm not a big fan of ginger - sometimes when you get the wrong bite, the ginger overpowers everything, which left a bad taste in my mouth. I made a reservation the week before and came to avoid the wait, but had to dine at 5:30PM as a result. Toki Underground is very small, but they cram as many seats as possible into this tiny, upstairs room. I first heard about it on a show I watched on the Cooking Channel during one of my flights back to California. Every since then, I was determined to make it to DC to try this Taiwanese ramen eatery. I was seated at the counter right by the kitchen, so I got to see the food being made, which was fun. I liked the little wooden stand/slab that jutted out about six inches above my dining surface; it was a great place to put side dishes and my water given the limited table space. Our waitress was super chill and friendly, and explained the specials of the day. I ended up ordering the Toki Classic, as well as the stinky tofu and fried cartilage. The stinky tofu was good, but unlike any other stinky tofu I've ever had (not really fermented enough for me, and a bit too dense). The cartilage was PHENOMENAL though, and finding a place that serves it is pretty hard to come by. I love cartilage! =) The ramen was delicious as well; the broth was rich, complex, and very flavorful. I could tell that some oil was ladled on before serving, and personally, it was a bit much for me (I would have preferred less of it), but overall, the bowl of ramen was out of this world. The poached egg was FLAWLESS, and the piece of nori was a nice touch. The dish had a distinctively Taiwanese taste (as opposed to Japanese ramen). The bf got the Taipei Curry ramen, which he LOVED. We finished off our meal with the warm chocolate chip cookies with milk. The cookies and milk were great, although the red miso buttercream was a bit strange for me. While an interesting concept, it was far too salty for my tastes (granted, miso paste is known to be concentrated and salty). My overall experience would be 3.5/5. I wanted ramen but I didn't feel like going across town to get it. I needed somewhere close that I could walk to with my almost 4 year old son. My husband reminded me of Toki Underground. The good- The food is great! My ramen was amazing. I shared the Toki Classic (pork on the side) with my son. The portion was large and the abundance of swine was greatly appreciated. Sadly, I don't eat pork lol and it was a bit too much for my son to eat in one sitting. Our waitress was awesome. She danced with my son and gave him stickers to play with. Overall, it was a nice first time. Now to some things that made me rate them 3 stars. 1.it is kinda hard to find if you don't know exactly where it is. I have walked passed it so many times and didn't actually know it was in that spot until I went there on 9/26/17. It has a shared entrance with The Pig Restaurant and bar. 2. It was EXTREMELY hot inside on this particular day. I'm not sure it was because this spot is very small and it was filled with patrons, but I had sweat dripping down my back. 3. My biggest gripe, they don't have HAPPY HOUR!!! Lol. I know this may not be a problem to most, but I just wasn't expecting to pay $12 for a delicious but very small cocktail at 6:30pm on a Tuesday evening. Le sigh. Will I go back, sure.
