There are few places that offer such a vast mix of culinary options than DC. I've had Toki underground on my radar, aka wishlist, for a number of years now. With this much built up anticipation, can this possibly end well? THE BAD: during these strange covid times, restaurants everywhere have altered their operating hours. For Toki, this means no indoor dining for lunch, so my experience is simply limited to takeout. Not necessarily bad, but nothing beats a good indoor dining experience. THE GOOD: that Taipei curry chicken though! I never pass on a bowl of ramen. Might I add....crispy fried chicken swimming in a pool of warm curry broth. Fresh veggies, beautifully cooked noddles. This is of course a detour from the traditional miso ramen I am used to, but I could not have been more satisfied with the outcome. Easily one of the best bowls of ramen I've had. Finally tried this place. The highlight for me suprisingly was the appetizers. Tried the crispy chicken thighs and fried dumplings. The chicken thighs were moist, flavorful and the coleslaw that came with it was delicious. The dumplings were cooked pretty well too. As for the ramen, I tried the red miso ramen. Good broth, but the noodles were a little tough and I prefer traditional chashu pork over their pulled pork take. But other than that, it was a pretty good experience. read more

An out-of-body experience. This ramen place is so unique and does a good job of incorporating American flavors with traditional Asian Ramen. It honestly tasted like a Texas BBQ smoky flavor in ramen form. Portion sizes are hefty and definitely go for the beef ribs! Quite easily my favorite ramen shop across the US. read more

It's the worst Ramen place I have ever tried. This place was beyond disgusting. and believed me I had been to a really bad establishment. The health department needed to close this rat household. Tried this place with some friends.  It was featured on DDD.  I tried the Vegan Dumplings, Fried Chicken Steamed Buns, and Tonkotsu Tsukemen.  The buns were the star for us.  I could do a whole meal of those and would like to try some of the other varieties on our next visit.  My entrée portion was very big and extremely filling.  We were a little disappointed the vegetarian dumplings that were prepared on the DDD episode weren't available. The atmosphere for this place is really upbeat and funky.  It's above a bar and could be a little difficult to find.  I'd recommend reservations as it's not very big and it's all bar seating.  Staff was very kind and attentive. read more

I was almost scared to post this review, knowing how much love there is for Toki Underground in the community! I went last weekend and was sadly disappointed in every dish I had. Let's dive into it: 1) Decor/vibes: 10/10. The space is so funky inside, with a blue light setting a moody tone with artificial trees and anime/cutesy animals all around. 2) Space: this place was PACKED. We had reservations for 8pm, which I made 1.5 weeks in advance. Folks were being told it was 2 hours of wait without reservations at the door. The space is tiny, making you feel "exclusive" when you walk in, but this positive feeling was quickly extinguished shortly after I was seated. There is no where to put your jacket, with only a small metal hook under the counter to place your purse. The people next to me kept elbowing me. We sat on stools which was fine short term, but was uncomfortable after a while. I also can't remember the exact time limits TU sets, but I'm pretty sure our waiter let us know we had 75 minutes after seating before we would be asked to give up the space. 3) Brussel sprouts: Soooooo salty. Not very crispy. It was a decent portion. 4) Pork dumplings: Pretty bland. I will say, if you check in on Yelp you get a coupon for free dumplings so that was a very nice surprise! 5) Toki classic ramen: I was shocked at how flavorless the broth of this ramen was, since this was a Michelin awarded ramen joint known for its ramen. I did like the egg on top- it was perfectly cooked and added some depth to the dish. Everything else about the dish was just "fine," nothing to rave about and nothing to complain about. Maybe I ordered oddly, or the kitchen was having an off day? After this experience, I'm not convinced Toki lives up to the hype. read more

Ordered delivery so I can't speak to the location. I do appreciate how they packaged the food and added utensils (those are scarce now with deliveries). But of a wait to get my food but understandably since it's such a popular spot. Toki Classic Ramen: 4/5. Over all the ramen was great! The ingredients were fresh and the kale was crunchy. Glad they packaged it so neat and pretty. The egg was perfectly boiled. The meat had good flavor but was a little tough. I wanted more of a punch of flavor from the broth. I felt like I needed to add to it so I could really enjoy it. However, nothing was bad. I think it's just my personal tastebuds. Might try a spicy ramen bowl next time. Highly recommend their ramen. Generally, I was underwhelmed by this restaurant. I got invited back and I think the food quality did improve for what I tried, but there were still some things that I really wanted to see improved. Unfortunately, our experience was cut short as there were hairs in 2 of our dishes. I can overlook a hair in one dish, but when it was in the second, we could not finish our meal. After the first dish I think they should have double check each plate that was going out not just to our party. Ambiance: (3/5) The area does have small restaurants, so it's not their fault, but it was really cramped as most of the seating was against the wall (bar style seating). The music was nice. Price: (4/5) I thought $17-$19 for ramen is very reasonable especially considering the location. I also tried the cauliflower buns and dumplings that were reasonably priced. Food: (3/5) I got the dumplings and they were okay the first time, but after trying them again, I think they improved the sauce and they were crispier. Last time, I got the kimchi ramen which was good. The broth was seasoned well and pork was tender. My egg was completely cold on the inside which was disappointing. I tried it again and the egg in the ramen and it was cold again. It seems the eggs are premade. Lastly, I also thought there should be more kimchi if it's called a kimchi ramen. Service: (5/5) Food came out quickly and the waiters were very nice. In conclusion, I don't recommend coming to this place. There is better ramen around. It wasn't our initial plan of eating here. The place we originally wanted to go to was closed so this was our next option and I'm glad we chose this place. We walked in and reservations were booked but they were able to squeeze us in, which was awesome! Service was great despite the busy-ness. I ordered the Taipei Chicken Curry and it was reaaaaaally good! Spicy on a hot day, but GOOOOD! I heard this place is known for their karaage so I believe I was able to try it out on this dish and it was really good! PLUS, with a side of Sapporo beer? 100%. The karaage was to die for! So delicious. I got the mala ramen and it was so flavorful. The edamame was also really tasty! It has a chili crisp/oil thingy on top and it's unlike any edamame I've had before. My friend got the curry ramen with karaage and that looked amazing as well. My only thing is it's pretty cramped in there so I'd imagine it'd be annoying to come during winter time (where would I leave my coat?), but honestly I'd say it's worth it :) I'd come back just for the karaage! read more

So...... I have to give this place one star because the decor was great and it's a beautiful intimate space. The food though.. disgusting.. I had the curry ramen and it was bland. It tasted like water with noodles and waiting for over an hour to get a seat just made things worse. The chicken that was in it tasted like somebody just threw salt on it and tossed it in the broth, it did not compliment the ramen at all. I even got the fried chicken buns and that wasn't good either. Everything was just flavorless and honestly, I could of made a better ramen by getting a 25 cent pack from Walmart. At least when it says beef flavor, it taste like beef flavor. The Apple soda was delicious though and I would recommend getting that as a drink. It was one of my gf favorite place to get ramen but watching her eat her miso and lose all faith in this place was heartbreaking. So.. Oki bowl is still my top ramen spot of choice. When I say Toki Underground is BAE... I mean it with all sincerity!!! Everything about my first visit (soon to be first of many) was amazing. From the eclectic-hipster feels, brought it with everything from upcycled skateboards as foot stools to a faux cherry blossom tree mounting - everything is a vibe! And I haven't even gotten to the food yet - oooo me oooo my, I can definitely say this is my favourite ramen spot in D.C!!! There's definitely a wait to get in here. They don't have very many tables available. Get reservations if you want to avoid the wait. The restaurant is on the 2nd floor, so it's easy to miss the restaurant when you are walking on the street. If you want to get your food faster, I'd recommend ordering for pickup. The curry chicken ramen is good albeit a bit heavy. You can get 1.5 meals out of each of the ramen. The fried chicken was delicious and I would definitely recommend ordering that. read more

The mediocre lukewarm ramen is not the part that made me give it a bad review. It's the cleanliness. The place is disgusting. Don't look up at the neon sign at the top of the stairs, it's covered in dust and grime, which is carried on throughout the place. It's dirty, grimy, and gross. I got the Taipei Curry Chicken Ramen and it was really good and filling. I couldn't finish the bowl which I felt kind of sad about because it was delicious. The fried chicken has a bit of a kick on the back end which I appreciated. The broth was rich and savory. My partner got the Chicken Mazeman (Brothless) and enjoyed it immensely. We split an order of the battered Cauliflower Steam Bun (4pc), honestly, it was a lot. We probably could have done with the 2 pc, but we weren't sure. Let me paint a picture for you. Your best friend makes reservations for 5. Two bail at the last minute because they "weren't feeling like Ramen (You black list from invites for the next 365 days). You Uber from your hotel and arrive across the street because the uber driver DGAF.... You find it because you're super good at land nav and reading street signs and building numbers. You walk in and up a narrow staircase to a tree house vibe that is filled with positive energy. The host (he's handsome AF) greets you and has the seats ready. Your best friend explains that two people bailed. He says it's no problem and asks for a moment to fix the seats. He's back before you know it and walks you to the bar directly in front of the kitchen with a full view of the bar and rest of the restaurant. It's not big but they know how to work it.... I am no longer a size queen... Within moments of scanning the menu QR code, we are introduced to Noel (Also beautiful with such positive energy and the most grounded vibe). They ask if we have any questions on the menu, take our drink order, and my best friend jumps right in at ordering some small plates for us. Here's what we ordered: Sapporo: 4/5 (the glasses were tiny but chilled so that was nice). Maybe I am not cultured and I'm the problem so take the review for what it is. I would have preferred a pint glass, but I'm a Pisces and people pleaser so I would never EVER have asked for a pint glass. Miso-Garlic butter Corn: 5/5 - light and delicious Pork Dumplings (6 per order): 5/5 - so flavorful!!! Fried Chicken Steamed Buns - order for four: 6/5 - this is the best fried chicken I've ever had. The spices and flavor are extraordinary. Pork Belly Steam Buns (two): 5/5 - so tender and delicious. The pork belly is cooked to perfection Crispy Chicken Thigh: 5/5 - we almost ordered another order. So easy to eat and forget that you have a main course coming. We were strong and resilient. Main Course: Toki Classic x 2: 5/5. The variety of spices and flavor is unheard of on the west coast. I'm so happy we found this place and cannot wait to return to DC because of this place. Pork belly Mazeman: 5/5 - I should have ordered another one to go. I'm glad I did not because the hotel room only had a mini bar and no room in the refrigerator for leftovers. Very quiet Sunday. Seated right away. Ordered the Toki Monster Cocktail which was well crafted but small in serving size and Pork Pan Fried Dumplings to start. I appreciate how the pork fluff is still incorporated as garnish, flavorful, perfectly cooked. The plate for the dumplings was broken in two places. I didn't mention anything to the host/bartender (as they were the ones rounding the floor) Ordered the Red Miso Ramen, didn't have any taste outside of what you would think boiled pork bones would taste (I understand pork broth is used in all ramen dishes at this location) Nothing jazzed it up, no real effort to make it pop. I look up and see another large chip on the side of the bowl. I bring it to the bartenders attention (who was very short in his interactions which in customer service is perceivably rude) he took the bowl and says I'll switch it out. Same plating which I'm grateful for however the broth is still lack luster. The bartender comes back over to check in, asks if everything is ok, I say "ehhh, it really doesn't taste like anything". He then asks if I want it off the bill and if I want my check. I said yes and got out of there as soon as possible. I'm not too sure if Toki is under new leadership but this isn't it! A+ for ambiance! But unfortunately, the ramen was only so-so for me and the sake was crazy overpriced. I ordered the red miso ramen and added mushrooms, and I also got a flight of sake. The sake flight cost $20 ($2-4 more than a carafe) and contained an unacceptable amount of product, just 2 sips for each of the 4 flavors. I'm not sure why the pours were so stingy, maybe because the bartender was doing some sampling of his own between pours? The ramen came out quickly and the egg was beautiful! Not ajitama, definitely a poached egg, but I really liked it. The broth was flavorful, but unfortunately tasted mostly of the braised Chinese-style pork (as opposed to a roasted pork belly). The noodles were chewy and the yellow style, which I associate with the grocery store and not a $17/bowl restaurant. Multiple people were turned away while I was eating but the restaurant never filled up; definitely make a reservation in advance if you want to give this place a try. Overall, it was a cool experience. We sat at the bar, and I kept elbowing the lady next to me because it's a very cramped space. This Taiwanese style ramen place was recommended by a friend! The restaurant is unique in several ways. The entrance is just a small single door that leads you to a stairs. The wooden decoration resonate traditional Japanese sake house. All the sittings are bar design. We ordered Toki Classic ramen, Pork Belly steam buns, and Karaage Fried Chicken. The ramen portion is just right for one person and we shared karaage chicken and the pork belly steam bun. We finished all and are delicious. They do have Taiwanese root beers. And at the check out, they also give out Taiwanese guva candy. The service are prompt and friendly. They knew we had shared dishes. They immediately handed out the small dishes. UHMM CALL THIS PLACE RN AND MAKE A RESERVATION. This is a small but AMAZING place to dine at. If you walk in GO EARLY or you might not get a table. Started with the seaweed salad and vegan dumplings. Never had a dumpling with raw garlic as one of the ingredients, so different but very tasty!! The seaweed salad was crunchy and fresh. It was a hot day so I also got a watermelon mint juice - never had this combo before and it was exactly what I needed to cool down in 90 degree weather. For the main meal, I got the vegan ramen. Never had ramen with beet root nor raw mushrooms and the broth wasn't too too spicy - it was a little sweet and savory. It was different but very tasty!! There were many reviews about the Cashew Dan Dan (it's vegetarian) so got that as well.
