We have been to Tokyo Shokudo so often that the waitress(June) has learned our names (and some of our food & drink preferences). The place is very small, and as-far-as-we-can-tell, there is always just one sushi chef and one wait-person. If it's crowded, the service may be slow. If you want fast sushi, just go somewhere else. My wife and I will wait all night for some of the best sushi we've ever had. We used to drive 15 miles to Sushi Huku (in it's day, it was the best - but the ownership changed, and the quality dropped). Now we go to Shokudo when we want top quality sushi. We always start with the 'Hana' (chef's choice sushi assortment), and add nigiri and rolls until we have to waddle out. read more

I just cannot understand where the good reviews are coming from. Stopped in for lunch with a coworker and we both agreed this was the worst sushi we had ever eaten. We had a sampling of five types of raw fish as nigiri and also had a spicy tuna roll. All of them tasted old. In addition the fish was room temperature instead of cold. The worst part... One of my nigiri pieces was so poorly cut it had loose skin and scales left behind. We were so grossed out we only ate a few pieces each after spending thirty bucks on lunch for two. The restaurant is cozy and nicely decorated. I've been here at least a dozen times and the service is always great. I always get the lunch special, which comes with 2-3 meat options and the standard miso soup and salad. However, they give you more substance in the soup and more than just lettuce in the salad. I really can't understand how this place got a rating as good as 4. I ordered the Sake XX Don (actually Salmon Don is its common name) and immediately regretted after it's served to our table. The bowl was small, the sashimi didn't look fresh and worst of all, the sushi rice was of bad quality. As a sticky rice eater, it's easy for me to tell the differences between several rice cultivars. The rice that served in this restaurant was definitely cheap and stored for a long time (cropped more than a year ago). My friend ate her Tuna Don in distaste. She commented that the texture of the rice was sooooo bad. They served the bowl with unroasted hand-tore seaweed sheet. No doubt that the chef sacrifices the food quality to save money. Come on! The roasted shredded nori (seaweed) is only $3.49 per OZ. in H mart and it's enough for a hundred Dons (fish bowls) if you notice how light the nori is. In the end we found out they charged $3 for two cups of green tea, which is usually free in most Asian restaurants. The Salmon Don is also more expensive than that of other places. I'll never dine there again. Do yourself a favor and don't waste money on this unprofessional Japanese restaurant (run by people from Taiwan). You can easily get food of higher quality in other places if you are a fan of Japanese dishes. read more

I am pleased to write about my favorite Japanese Sushi-bar and restaurant. The owner and his lovely wife provide me a place to escape. I lived in Chicago for many years and frequented many Japanese restaurants some as a visitor and some as neighbor and friend. This place reminds me of my many friend's restaurants. I am allowed to order off menu items, in country home style cooking from the kitchen. Tonight my choice of Japanese or California uni! I choose the Japanese uni and it was wonderful! Although the wait time is longer than other places (probably because the restaurant has only one waitress, but she has fantastic glitter hair so I can't complain), the food was well worth it! I got the sushi platter for lunch and it was absolutely spanktastic wonderful. Came to this place on a whim because my boyfriend and I were craving sushi. We didn't know what to expect because it was located in a random shopping center next to a tax office and such. Either way, we were definitely glad we stopped in. The service was great and our server was very friendly and helpful. Small authentic japanese sushi restaurant in a tiny strip mall. It has impressive fresh sushi with a simple menu. I got the tsuki sushi combo. It has a generous amount of fresh sushi for a decent price. The vegetable coroquette appetizer was sooo yummy. I highly recommend it. I haven't tried their rolls but the table across from mine enjoyed their rolls, so I will be trying them next time. The service was kind of slow, but you really can't blame them when it's one sushi chef and one waitress. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. Absolutely perfect, definitely matched up with the quality of Shoya Izakaya. (only 12 bucks too!) This is a tiny restaurant, so the problems with service and inventory make sense for the other reviewers. For lunch, only 1 server and 1 chef were there. I can imagine that slow nights make them hesitant to bring in too much staff or hold too much inventory, creating shortages. Anyway, I was there when it was empty, so the service was excellent. Absolutely amazing. The waitress was very helpful when we arrived and was very patient when we had no idea how the menus worked. The waitress did have an accent and explained in monosyllabic words but it was enough for us to comprehend. The sushi was impeccable and didn't take long to arrive after we had placed our orders. This place is great if your looking for REAL sushi! The business owners are a husband and wife team from Japan (Mr. and Mrs. Shu) and they care about the quality of the food! The prices they charge for the quality is VERY reasonable, I got fresh Toro nigiri and Uni for a fraction of what other places charge. I also ordered the dinner beef teriyaki bento box and the beef was very tender and actually cooked medium rare the way I requested it. That in itself is "rare" these days! I could tell that even the miso soup was authentic, not just Dashi powder and miso paste. This is a small venue which could be easily missed due to its location in a small plaza. The interior is a little outdated and quite small. It could probably fit 40 people at most. The Egg Drop Soup: Yes, I had to go there and try it out. I was curious to see it in a Japanese restaurant. It had a silky, but salty flavor, and nothing really special about it. The Bento Box (Salmon): The cost for this dish was about 22 dollars. It was not worth 22 dollars. It was worth about 8.99 at best. The 6 pieces of sashimi (salmon, tuna, and yellow tail) was average at best. One of the pieces tasted really fishy, and the restaurant attempted to cover it with diced lime pieces. It may work on others, but I picked it up. Sushi pieces were thin and disappointing. The sushi pieces reminded me of the ones I see at a Chinese buffet. A whole bowl of squid salad was provided, and it was a sorry excuse of trying to fill space in a bento box. The grilled salmon was so salty that I could not take more than the initial bite. The highlight of the bento box was the tempura pieces which was great with fresh vegetables and shrimp. The waitress (potentially owner's wife) served us and she was surprised that I didn't finish the salmon, and she asked why. I told her it was so salty I couldn't eat it, and she offered rice and a response with that's how you're supposed to eat it. I am sorry, but I don't want hypertension at age 30. The Tamagoyaki or Tamago: I had one bite out of about 8 pieces on a dish. It was salty. SALTY. No trace of sugar or the buttery milky texture to it. The dish was cold and salty with a rubber texture. Complete disappointment and misinterpretation of what tamagoyaki or tamago is supposed to be. Many have said that a sushi chef's skill is exemplified by the production of tamago, and this sample dish told the entire story for me. The Agedashi Eggplant: Pretty standard. Basically starch and your pre-made tensuyu broth with diced dashi. It was ok, and nothing that would blow a person away. If you don't like tofu, this is a good alternative. The Rainbow Roll: This was also pretty standard. It reminded me of the same roll quality I would get from Tokyo Bay BUFFET. It was not up to the same standard as Circle Sushi, Hayakwa, or any of the decent sushi places around Atlanta. Overly priced for what you get. The "Shokudo Special Toro Tuna Roll": This was probably the best part of the evening. The only reason is because of the Toro itself. The scallion added a clashing texture to the smooth Toro texture. There was a slight mysterious sauce mixed in with the fish, but I felt it was there to add "flavor" to the fish. When I mean best part of all the things I tried, it still doesn't mean much. This roll was also, in my opinion, over priced for what you get. However, if you really want to get something there, this is what you can go with. I was offered a tonkatsu ramen, but I declined. I didn't need to taste it to have an opinion about it. There were other dishes or sushi, but I declined. I heard the uni was not fresh at all from someone who had it that evening. I was also told that uni was overly priced. Overall, it's a new restaurant that I had the chance to try out, but I don't see myself going back there again unless I don't have a choice. It was a Saturday evening, and I am pretty sure there was a reason why my part was the only major party there. During the span of 2 hours, I only saw 2 other tables of customers (about 6 people total). With the amount of money you pay for, you're better off somewhere else. Came here for lunch one day and ordered an oyakodon and sushi combo. The chicken was under seasoned and rice was extremely dry and hard. I was able to stomach the chicken but could not handle more then a few spoonfuls of rice. The fish for the nigiri was almost tasteless or it could have been the ratio of fish to rice was way out of proportion... I won't be returning but I could see how people looking for Japanese food and unwilling to drive could stop by here. read more
