I love this place!! The chef is always such a nice guy who also makes the best Sushi in town! (You know it's great sushi when the majority of the foodies are older Japanese people). What we love to order... Seafood salad (sashimi salad) is always on point! Bento box - a great deal with your choice of meat and rice, tempura, nigiri rolls, and sashimi (great bang for your buck) Spicy tuna rolls - his extra twist with sliced up jalapeños on top of each roll just makes this dish so addictive. This is a small hiddden sushi joint for those from the northern metro Atlanta. The sushi is far superior than the average raw fish stop. A small Japanese sushi master stands behind the sushi bar, this place is his pride and joy. The fish truly melts your palate. I have visited Tokyo Shokudo at least 5 times for lunch and 3 times for dinner, and it has quickly become one of my favorite sushi bars and Japanese restaurants in the area. I almost always have sushi and sashimi, and the freshness, quality, and preparation are consistently excellent. Lunch specials are a great value, including the sushi and sashimi combinations. Lunch Bento boxes are also offered, and the box that I tried earlier this week was outstanding. Tokyo Shokudo provides great value for quality sushi and Japanese food, give it a try. read more

I was disappointed at this place. First of all the service was very slow. I ordered bento box, and got the sushi and sashimi part first. The hot foods (salmon and tempura) and rice didn't come until 15 min later. Second, I am not sure if I got salmon. It tasted and felt more like steelhead trout. Third, the tempura sauce was too salty, and the sauce on the salmon was missing "something." Fourth, they have limited variety of dishes. I'm sorry but I would not call this place an authentic Japanese restaurant. Now there are some positive points to make. The sushi and sashimi were very good. Miso soup was very tasty. Also fried chicken (tori no tatsuta age) we ordered from appetizer menu was pretty good. Even though the service was slow (cooking took so long), the waitress was nice and she did her best. So if you are looking for a place to have some appetizers and sushi, I think this would be a wonderful place. Tokyo Shokudo gets it wrong on a myriad of levels. I went with a group of four on Friday night. We arrived at 7:15. The place was moderately busy at about 70% capacity. We were promptly seated and placed our order. I noticed at this time that there was only one waiter and one sushi chef on site. The temperature inside felt about 78-80 degrees, a little on the warm side. We receive our beers quickly and apps after about 20 minutes. Not speedy but acceptable. The shrimp tempura was tasty and fried to a perfect golden hue. Edamame and miso soup were decent. Here is where the meal goes downhill. It takes 40 more minutes to receive 2 of the 8 maki rolls we ordered. Upon arrival I immediately noticed the sushi rice had that translucent color, mushy texture, and tight-packed rolling that is usually only found in grocery store sushi. Tasting confirmed the inferior quality. Nevertheless, being one hour into our meal, we were hungry and quickly gobbled these two rolls. I'm starting to get worried that we will run out of time before our next engagement. We order another round of beers only to have the waiter inform us that they have run out of the Asahi Beer we were drinking. We accept an inferior substitute. We wait for 30 more minutes. So 1-1/2 hour in and still no sign of our food. At this point I inform the waiter that we must leave unless he can assure us that the remainder will arrive in 5-10 minutes. He apologises profusely and says that last week they had more staff but very few customers. This week they pared back in anticipation of another slow night. He says the chef is working on our order but has no idea as to a time frame. We decide to settle the bill. The waiter charges us for the beers and apps removing the rest of the order from the bill. I'm okay with that. The waiter was nice enough, just overworked. I just want to get out of here so I can get some fast food! I'm puzzled by all these other great reviews. Fake maybe? This restaurant fails in these critical areas: inventory(beers), sushi prep(rice), short staffing, long wait times, and ambient temperature. I shall not return. Ever. read more

Ate here for lunch with family and had a good meal. The server was friendly, accommodating, and very helpful (and honest) about the menu. There was no wait, which was perfect when you're trying to get back to work! The salad dressing was like nothing I've ever had at a sushi place- so good, I was told it was the chefs own recipe. My family and I have love this place. After years of hopping around and trying as many Japanese restaurants as we could, we have finally stopped searching and have taken it upon ourselves to be regulars here. Its a small space, but the food is unmatched. The owners are so incredibly friendly and remember us and take it upon themselves to try and guess if we are getting our usual orders or trying something new each visit. I, myself, am a huge fan of the raw salmon sashimi (sake) and order it almost every time I come here. Each order comes with 3 pieces and they are reasonably prices and tastes of very good quality. My sister enjoys the udon and the ramen here because she doesn't enjoy sashimi or sushi like the rest of my family. She says both are fantastic. As a family, we also love to get the assorted tempura which comes with shrimp, and an variety of vegetables such as bell peppers, pumpkin, sweet potatoes and other things fried in the light and crispy tempura batter. My parents usually get the sushi platter which comes with an assortment of different sushis. Their food is so good and their service is impeccable. I just had the best sushi I've ever had. We sat at the bar and ordered a few items off the hot menu to start. I strongly recommend the Pork Belly and Asparagus Wrapped bacon (2 skewers per order) Each was perfectly grilled and had excellent flavor. The vegetable croquette was also great, and burning hot (temperature). We ordered a side of tako-wasabi and talked to the chef and let him prepare/decide (omakase) our meals for us. We started with a sampling of 6 different types of nigiri. The big standouts for me were the squid (absolutely the best I've ever had, creamy, aromatic, splendid) and the sea bass (firm, almost crunchy? meat with a sweet delicate flavor. wonderful) We also had generous pieces of salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and another white fish that was wonderful. Course two was the premium course. 4 pieces of the best our chef could offer. Fresh sea urchin (uni), scallop (hotate), salmon roe (ikura) and fatty tuna (toro) were each delicious. I was truly impressed with the quality. We also ordered the Tokyo Shokudo Special NegiToro Roll. It allows the few simple ingredients to be savored and enjoyed. We finished our meal with a spicy hand roll followed by green tea ice cream and pineapple. We were all stuffed. One of the best meals I have ever had. Tips: Sit at the counter and watch the chef make your sushi. Let him guide you on your tasting tour. I've been here several times. The chirashi and katsu curry were excellent; in particular, the katsu curry might be the tastiest I have had. On the other hand, the spider roll was so so. Also, I tried the tonkatsu ramen and it was also not as good as Umaido which is already just only decent. I wish miso soup came out instead of salad. Recently I have been trying other places just to see if anyone could dethrone the champ, but I can only say that this place has gotten even better with each new visit. I like the smallness of this place-- it's not too noisy and loud and gives a feeling of coziness even when it is empty. Pricewise, the sushi here is about on par with Haru Ichiban a few miles away, but I'd say their fish is better quality and their sushi better put together. They have a few decent lunch specials, but I was disappointed that their curry is for lunch only, and that they have stopped serving Okonomiyaki entirely. read more

They close during the day and re open for dinner so we decided to go earlier than later. When we walked in we were immediately greeted and we were told to sit wherever we like. She then spoke with us about the lunch specials and I asked her about what she would recommend. She was very knowledgeable and took my likes into consideration. My date had two rolls and I had the bento box. It was the perfect mix of what they offer. Came with miso soup, salad and the box itself had Nigiri, sashimi and tempura. We were both very impressed! And ended up staying a little after close. By no means did they rush us. They let us sit and talk as long as we pleased and we're very appreciative of our business. Really torn about how to rate this place. My first experience was really great. I came in for dinner and got one of the chefs pick sashmi platters and was pleasantly surprised. I wasn't too crazy about any of their rolls. My second experience today was for lunch, and I ordered the sashmi plate for $13. Maybe I should have expected less because of the price, but the fish was not as fresh as my first visit. Both pieces of my tuna were flavorless and still partially frozen. Stopped in here for dinner tonight and was very impressed! In summary, service was excellent and so was the food! We ordered a spring roll appetizer and two sushi rolls. It turned out that they were out of something for the spring rolls but our waitress who was very apologetic offered a suggestion of Shu-mai (sp?) which we actually ended up liking more than most spring rolls! Our sushi came out as soon as we were finished and was so good! Fresh ingredients, good portions, nice presentation and reasonable prices! If you are looking for sushi that looks like art, this place is not for you. If you are looking for delicious food at very reasonable prices, this IS your place! Tokyo Shokudo is fairly new (opened Feb 2011) and is located in a small strip of stores just south of Howell Ferry on Peachtree Industrial. The restaurant decor is modern and clean, the food is excellent, the service was efficient and very pleasant, plus the prices were reasonable. We will be back. Visited with my family this evening and what a treat! The owners and wait staff are friendly and accommodating, and the food is delicious. I'm not a sushi expert, but I can say there was something very different about this sushi - it was incredibly fresh, the rice was moist and flavorful. We tried a an assortment of appetizers, the dumplings and wasabi pork dumplings were especially yummy. Polished off the meal with the best green tea ice cream I've ever had. A little known place on PIB. It's a hole in the wall, but the food is fantastic, service is great. It's been a very long time since I've eaten Ramen in the states and recall Japan in a positive way. The food is seriously delicious. It's kind of hard to tell from the outside, it's in a small shopping center next to a hookah bar and chicken wing place but don't let that fool you. You NEED to try this place. Only bad thing about this place? It's only 2 miles from my house. I'll be struggling not to eat here 3 or 4 times a week. Their sushi and sashimi is good, their hot dishes are very good. Prices are good for what you get. On a side note, this place is a Japanese restaurant, owned by Japanese people, food made by Japanese people. I know this may not seem like a big deal to some, but I don't go to "Japanese" restaurants that aren't owned/operated by Japanese. It's just not authentic and there is a difference. I'm Korean/Chinese and my wife is Japanese. So no, it's not a race thing, it's just reality and what it is. All in all, go check this place out. We have been to Tokyo Shokudo so often that the waitress(June) has learned our names (and some of our food & drink preferences). The place is very small, and as-far-as-we-can-tell, there is always just one sushi chef and one wait-person. If it's crowded, the service may be slow. If you want fast sushi, just go somewhere else. My wife and I will wait all night for some of the best sushi we've ever had. We used to drive 15 miles to Sushi Huku (in it's day, it was the best - but the ownership changed, and the quality dropped). Now we go to Shokudo when we want top quality sushi. We always start with the 'Hana' (chef's choice sushi assortment), and add nigiri and rolls until we have to waddle out. read more
