How have I never been here before?? I have been to almost every sushi spot in town but I missed Tokyo Sushi somehow. I'm so glad I looked on yelp to get some to-go sushi for a busy day. I was a bit worried because I saw no customers on this Monday night but the place looked nice & very clean. We ate it about an hour after I picked it up & it was so fresh & yummy! I almost don't want to talk too much about this place since at this point it's not over crowded like some of the other places in the SC valley. However, this place is awesome. Evi, the head chef, does a fantastic job with his sushi. He's the guy who you want to get Omakase from up here. (They don't currently offer that since people have complained about price) He'll often put little touches on the premium pieces that help him set this restaurant a cut above the rest in the area. Pro tip: They have real wasabi here upon request. Also, I shouldn't leave out the rest of the staff. Small and super cute sushi spot! The chef is super funny very vibrant and quick one serving. There was only two customers inside so I am not for sure what their busy nights are like. We requested water but mind you the waiters/waitresses do not check back up on you, you have to make eye contact or raise your hand in order to get a refill. It's not fun getting sick on the road staying at a hotel. Well that's what happened after getting take out from here. It certainly tasted great. But about 12 am Brrryuump! Guuuurrrrr... went my stomach and the rest of the night was uncomfortable. I went to my appointment but my client took a long look at my pie hole and knew I wasn't right. We like to go to Tokyo Sushi on McBean at least once a month to have their excellent Ramen, Sushi rolls and tempura. Always great food and great service. We absolutely love this place and even more so after their recent situation where they turned my frown upside down: I picked up two Miso Ramen to go and came home to find they were either the wrong soup (tasted like spicy water with noodles) or it was incorrectly prepared. What was amazing is that when I called and explained what was wrong the waiter/manager understood immediately and had two new Ramens ordered before we even go off the phone. They were ready when I arrived and I am now at home enjoying PERFECT Ramen in less than 20 min. These guys do great work and make great food! read more

There seems to be one good waitress on Fridays and a revolving door of young and inexperienced waitresses. If they could just find a good and reliable wait staff, I'd happily give this place a 5. Did I mention that this place has fresh wasabi? You get it when you order a la carte sushi but judging by looks, I think you get the typical horseradish stuff if you order AYCE. The sushi here is delicious, fresh, and pleasing to the eye and tastebuds. We ordered the Cajun Tuna Roll, Cucumber Sashimi Roll, and Valencia Roll. The service is great, attentive, and topped off with a nice bowl of edamame. Watching the sushi chefs, if you are sitting at the bar, is viewing artistry at work. For anyone who has read my reviews in the past you'll notice that the quality of service often dictates how many stars an establishment receives. So let's see where to start.... Depending on previous experiences you may or may not be happy to hear that Kyoto Sushi is now under new management and has been renamed Tokyo Sushi. The layout hasn't changed much with the exception of the updated sushi counter and modern decor. The staff is still very polite, but unfortunately not very attentive. Usually when you sit at the sushi bar you get attended rather quickly. There was a group of 3 people 2 seats down from us that kept getting served and attended too while we were struggling to even get sriracha. Not to mention the restaurant wasn't even that busy. Maybe they're regulars or we just didn't seem to be that important. Nevertheless not very good service. The sushi itself though was very delicious and fresh. The way everything we ordered was served was very appealing. The cajun tuna is a must. Will I return? Possibly, but not anytime soon. read more

This used to be my go-to sushi spot in SCV. It's been great the first handful of times, but it seems like service has gone down the drain. The last few visits, we had an asian girl for a waitress, and seemed like it was that time of the month for her. She had an angry resting face, which was fine, but she was rude, had an attitude, and seems like she hated her life. Sadly, I still tipped because I always do, but now I'm going to change that after this experience. Another annoying thing was that we got seated at a much earlier time than another party. The party that got seated after us seems to know the owner. The owner happened to be there and was conversing with this party. We got our order taken much later since the attention was on this other party, fine, but the party that came later all got their food before us. And it turns out, the waiter had lost our order, and they had to remind the chefs to make our order. I kid you not, we were already seated for nearly 45mins before getting our food, and the restaurant was not busy. I'll give it a couple more visits before I decide to improve this review. First time here today on a Saturday! Pretty quiet, 3 patrons at the bar and 2 at the tables, so no problem with the seating at all. Henry and Emily took care of us and both were super nice. We have some chicken katsu and rice, Spanish mackerel, yellowtail, Cali roll, fresh h20 eel, and hand roll spicy tuna. Food overall was A+ for freshness, flavor on the katsu was lightly breaded not heavy at all. All sushi orders were fresh, buttery, and nice presentation. The two gentlemen who I call the sushi masters (I'm sure that's not what they r called) came to our table to make sure we were ok which i thought was a nice touch. I was hoping to love Tokyo Sushi, but I just didn't. We were met and seated in a timely manner, and everyone there was very nice. But, sadly, the food itself didn't do it for me. For appetizers, we had the Shrimp Tempura and Chicken Katsu. The shrimp was OK, but not well cleaned with bits of shell hidden in the batter. The chicken, well, maybe I expected something different, was mostly breading with a little dry sliver of chicken in the middle and accompanied by a huge thick, syrupy dipping sauce. The main event is always the fish, and it seemed fresh. However, the salmon was chewy, and the crab in the Hawaiian Role was dry. The Cucumber Roll featured a huge chunk of bitter cucumber in the middle, we've always had it julienned. Our tuna rolls were fine. It probably didn't help that there appeared to be friends of the owner, or perhaps the landlord yucking it up at the corner of the sushi bar. That's not necessarily the fault of the owner or the staff, but it sort of spoke to the vibe. I would suggest you try them, pop in for one or two dishes, maybe you'll like it better. read more

Before October 2020 this place was great. Now it's just ordinary. Three months ago this would have been a five star rating based on food, cleanliness and staff. The only thing that has changed is the food. The staff is adorable and attentive. The place and restrooms are very well kept. The food has gone from bright, flavorful and fastidiously prepared to lackluster mediocre. Based on a total of six visits in six months I've noticed a dramatic change in the three things I order. Sure, it's just three items and they were always for carry-out but this sample size has the duration to speak to the changes since COVID-19. My order has consistently been an unsweetened iced green tea, a natto roll and a salmon skin roll. Six months ago the salmon skin rolls were hearty with girth, a careful placement of rice, and crispy skins without flesh. The natto roll defied the laws of physics: it was a robust roll just enough rice to keep it together. The green tea was green and you could see the specs of powder bundled in the water and ice slowly disappear and deepen the color of the drink. You used to be able to double up and pour more water in and give it a good mix to get more yum out of it. Now, it's all gone to sad. The shine and care I once looked forward to are gone: my to-go orders have become ordinary. I could go on and detail the disappointment but the pictures will do that for me. Of the six times I've picked up food the last two have diminished with enough consistency that I'll have to find a new place to explore. I'm going to miss you! The food was once worth going out of my way - a welcomed respite from the road. Now we will say we are just somebody that we used to know. read more

OMG, Tokyo is great sushi! This is one of the best sushi spots we've discovered in a long time. The Bento box was exquisite in that it has these delightful extras like grilled mussels and cucumber salad. Plus, they have the Japanese aesthetic presentation that I adore. They feed your eyes before your mouth and stomach. From the moment we walked in we got a warm and friendly greeting, and the service never waned. This review is long overdue so here goes. To the owner/proprietor, thanks for the great service. I believe you have been there several times and hopefully, will continue to be there. My wife never wanted to step foot in a sushi bar/restaurant. She never did, thankfully now to a lesser extent, like the idea of raw fish. Some time back she said "OK let's go grab sushi". She orders anything baked, along with CA rolls, seaweed salad and tempura which are all very Tokyo Sushi tasty. We've tried quite a few other establishments when she first became interested but Tokyo Sushi is our only go to. Sucks when you're closed and she's craving sushi. Your place is always clean, and the quality is consistent. Lately, the salmon sashimi has been getting more of her attention. She says it looks "pretty" and I tell her it is silky buttery. Because my wife worked as server yrs ago, she is aware of the customer service we receive at restaurants. Now, if you hired Ann and Biri, excellent job to you Ms. Tokyo Sushi owner. One or both of them are typically there when we go in especially after 3pm Fridays when my wife is done with her work week. They always make us feel welcomed at your restaurant. Had a dinner with family tonight. Food is good in my mind and price is right. Ordered two bentos and 2 CA rolls. The waiter was attentive and checked on things. The only bad experience is the young waitress who handed me the check. I signaled her to give me the check but she left it at the end of the table so I needed to get up to get it. I checked with my family members they saw it and thought it was weird and rude. Experience was good overall except the waitress at the end who handled the check left me a bad taste that ruined the experience. read more
