Hey so I just want to say: I admire what y'all are trying to do - local ingredients, elevated, distinctive space. But there's a lot of issues here: our meal was hideously overpriced, for one. $250 for two people, and we ordered maybe 3 cocktails between us. I ordered the lamb ragu, which was underspiced, watery, and served with zero care. A big wet slop of pasta. The scallops my wife got were very nicely prepared, but she had to add asparagus in order to make the dish complete from a flavor standpoint. The dish would've been underflavored without the asparagus. You shouldn't as the customer have to add something to a dish to complete it. And that dovetails with the other more irritating issue: the upselling was absolutely hideous, and nonsensical. I was asked whether I wanted to add blackened shrimp to my lamb pasta. Seriously? Then she asked if my wife wanted blackened shrimp *on her scallops.* Are you insane? I understand trying to push certain items but they need to make sense, and you can't be that aggressive about it. I felt like I was at a used car dealership. The dessert was inedible: sickly sweet strawberry sorbet. I left almost all of it on the plate and our server said nothing. This was a meal we were so excited about, and we left the place irritated and feeling like we had been fleeced. I want nothing more than a Michelin starred restaurant in NE Indiana. We had the best time. My husband and I will be moving to Fort Wayne and were there touring the city and getting a feel for it. We stopped in Saturday night and did dinner start to finish. My husband ordered an old fashioned and I had a glass of Prosecco. We had the duck fat frites, and when I say I would and could bathe in basil aoli I mean it. They were incredible. We then ordered the scallops and lamb pasta and everything was cooked impeccably. It was absolutely delicious. We split the strawberry pretzel cheesecake for dessert and it was the perfect balance of salty sweet and creamy. Great meal and great service! My wife and I had dinner here on a Saturday night. The restaurant was busy, but everything was still great! We shared the fondue to start and we both really liked it. The flavor was great and it had just a little bit of heat. The only criticism is it could be a little bit thicker. We each had the steak frites for our entree. This is one of the best steaks you will ever have. Everything about this dish was top notch! The ribeyes were cooked perfectly, the sauce was very rich, the butter added a great flavor, and once you start eating the fries you can't stop. To end the meal we shared the caramel apple bread pudding. It had very well balanced flavors and was the perfect ending to a great meal. Last, our server was great! You must order the poutine, made with potatoes fried in duck fat, sausage gravy, some kind of awesome cheese sauce, and two fried eggs on top. Everything is farm-to-table, and I love that concept. My friend and I got the burger and I'll admit, it wasn't my favorite. It was a little dry but maybe that's because it was a lean cut of meat. There was also a hair in my salad. The food was so flavorful with every bite and seasoned great. The meat was cooked to order perfectly. We ordered two cocktails off the menu, and both of them were very strong and worth every dollar (seasonal G&T and jungle bird). The staff was great and the restaurant was very clean. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that while the food tasted great we were not blown away by it for the price. We stopped here for the first time when we were on our way to a concert at Foellinger. It was a little tough to find a place to park when we got there as it seems the whole street and surrounding area is under construction and there were fences up everywhere. I am sure their business has been disrupted quite a bit. We were greeted as we walked in and seated. Our waitress, Elise, came to our table to take our drink order. She was very pleasant. I ordered the Indiana Peach cocktail and my mom ordered the Blackstreet cocktail. Both were good but neither one wowed us. Elise also brought out the wrong drink to me, I think an Indiana cider, she apologized and brought the correct one. We started our meal with the VERY SHARABLE order of Duck Fat Frites with basil aioli, if you get nothing else ----get this!!! Oh my so good, crunchy exterior, soft inside, and the most flavorful aioli I have ever had in their basil aioli. We had informed Elise that we were splitting everything so next she brought out picnic broccoli salad already split in two plates, love that. Broccoli salad was good but didn't knock my socks off. We then shared the duck breast with duck fat fried rice and veggies with a ginger vinaigrette and sweet chile garlic sauce. Mom didn't care for the duck, thought it was too fatty. I agreed but ate every bit of my share. I sure could eat platefuls of the duck fat fried rice though. We both decided to order dessert. I got the chocolate layer cake and mom got the wildflower honey cheesecake. I also ordered a scoop of their housemade bourbon & brown sugar ice cream. Desserts were excellent. My fave was the ice cream as the brown sugar really came through and it was silky smooth. We also had coffee from a French press with our dessert, so tasty. We will definitely be back. We have only been to Tolon for the Sunday brunch. We tend to default to the Nashville Hot Chicken & Waffles, sharing that and the burger. The service is always great and they make a decent old fashioned. Update: we've ventured to other menu items. Fried Rice: unless you're into mushroom, I'd skip it. The flavor was great but there were too many mushrooms, imo. Steak & Eggs: I wasn't a huge fan. Noting bad, but nothing amazing (except for the fries.) I was a bit disappointed to be honest. I was excited to try the ribeye once I saw my two favorite words- foie gras and bone marrow. The first steak was wayyyy over cooked to my liking. It came out medium- medium well and I had asked for it medium rare. Second time, it came out rare which I could do as I didn't want to send it back- I feel bad... half way through it was medium- medium well. Left side was rare- right side was medium/medium well. I let my server know just to inform her something is off. She mentioned it's a larger cut so it happens.... However... knowing a thing or two in the kitchen.. when there's inconsistency in the temperature- especially that drastic - the stovetop temperature is uneven. Maybe didn't realize one side was off? I really wanted to like Tolon. The concept and menu sounded delicious, but in the end poor execution left me wanting. We went for brunch and left quite disappointed. We each ordered a Bloody Mary to drink and some of the biscuits everyone seemed to be raving about. For entrées I had the shrimp and grits and my wife the chicken & waffles. I love all manner of Bloody Mary, but made it about halfway through this one before I had to throw in the towel. Each sip was just a mouthful of horseradish finished with watered down tomato juice. I didn't get any other flavors, including the spirit. I typically love a horseradish heavy Bloody Mary and I have sampled tons of house Bloody mixes that were amazing. This just missed the mark entirely. With no other flavor to offset the horseradish and the house mix being nothing more than flavorless tomatoes run through a juicer it was ultimately undrinkable. The biscuits were honestly the only part of the visit that demonstrated any culinary aptitude whatsoever. Dense, flavorful, appropriately seasoned and baked to perfection. I can see why these are the big take away for so many patrons. However, even on this plate the house made berry bourbon jam was a disappointment. Not a jam at all, just a runny syrup with a few macerated berries. My shrimp and grits were as inedible as my Bloody was undrinkable. Blackened shrimp fell victim to what happens to many blackened dishes prepared by anything other than a chef with a lot of experience in the style. Just a mouthful of black pepper and old bay. Barely even picked up any shrimp flavor on the back end. Offset this with grits and andouille so salty that I'm pretty sure they altered my serum osmolality. I ate maybe 5 bites before calling it. Wife's chicken was similarly problematic. While the texture of the breading was close to that of a good Nashville hot chicken, the flavor was nothing but a mouthful of black pepper. At this point I'm seeing a trend in this kitchen . I have often been accused of liking food too spicy, and I enjoy all manner of strong flavors. So for me to have these complaints... It wasn't that anything was too spicy or strong, the flavors were just wrong. Bottom line: we ultimately spent a lot of money on food that just wasn't prepared well and didn't taste good. Our server, after over emphasizing the farm to table shtick to the point of tedium, failed to recognize that there was a bunch of picked over food on the table which clearly had not been enjoyed. When a table asks for the check and they have barely touched their meals you might want to investigate beyond the fact that they do not want boxes for any of it. 2 stars for effort. I reserve 1 star for full on calamity or complete lack of customer service, but I really cannot imagine being enticed to return to Tolon. Especially with delicious options like Nawa & Mercado right across the street. P.S. Any establishment with negative reviews which mention the owner by name, confirmed by the owner's argumentative and unprofessional replies should be a HUGE red flag to anyone with half a brain. At this point I'm just thankful we didn't encounter Nicky during our visit! read more

Bro set up mom and I for Mother's Day. First time here and take out. All was great. Phone in order and went earlier to imbibe something local. Make it a cheeseburger did the trick. Take out needed a little warming at home but all was great. Scallops like butta! And that potato crawfish side was awesome. Mom loved the ribeye with porcini mushroom butter and potatoes. Tolon is an absolute gem of a restaurant, further proof that the restaurant scene in Fort Wayne is on the rise. Nestled in the up and coming downtown sector near the rivers; Tolon is upscale, though unpretentious. Decorated in festive, yet tasteful Holiday decor, Tolon feels warm and cozy. We were greeted by cheerful hosts and the chef himself checked in on our table periodically. It is evident that Matt, the founder and head chef at Tolon, is passionate about his Farm to table restaurant concept. We began with the cheese and charcuterie plate. It was generously sized and more than enough for the five of us to enjoy. I particularly liked the Brie paired with the "hot honey" it had a nice zip without being overwhelmingly spiced. The others in my group raved about the unique charcuterie and bourbon smoked pecans. The duck fat fries were delectable and abundant in size. They were served with the most incredible basil aioli. Smooth, creamy aioli tasted prominently of fresh basil and I was told that it was made with special duck eggs. I loved this sauce so much that I proceeded to put it on everything I ordered! The Kale and Brussel Sprout Caesar salad was also delicious. I enjoyed the addition of hazelnut pieces and local Asiago cheese alike. The kale was flavorful without being overly bitter. The salad was large, and could be easily split. The whipped cauliflower was among the best cauliflower dishes I've ever tried. Buttery, smooth and topped with cheese, breadcrumbs and scallions. As someone who is typically trepidatious of cauliflower, I was blown away by the tastiness of this side dish. The Mac and cheese was rich, creamy and delectable. Al dente in preparation, orchiette (little ear shaped) noodles were drenched in thick brie sauce. My mom raved about her Chicken and dumplings entree. The Parisian gnocchi looked particularly nice. She noted that they were fluffy and not overly dense. The chicken was tender and cooked to perfection. Rachel ordered the cheeseburger. The portion of the burger and fries was outrageous. This dish could be easily split. The basil aioli accompanied this burger and she seemed thrilled with the flavor and preparation of the beef. Bill enjoyed the Bison strip which was served atop a creamy bed of whipped cauliflower. He loved this dish. We ended the evening by sampling some of the homemade ice creams on the dessert menu. I especially enjoyed the Maple Sugar Cereal Milk ice cream. It had a mild saltiness that perfectly balanced the sweetness of the ice cream. I also enjoyed the toasted marshmallow ice cream. It tasted exactly of a delicious campfire marshmallow. In true Italian style I enjoyed the ice cream with a shot of Amaretto. We all enjoyed every aspect of our delicious meal at Tolon last night. We had a very pleasant experience and will definitely be back. Tolon is a quaint restaurant with a nice ambiance. We sat near the front window which was lovely to see the downtown landing all lit up. Our server, Lindsey, was incredibly friendly and provided excellent service. The food was delicious. We started with the Duck Fat Frites, which was more than 2 of us needed (can easily be an appetizer for 4 people). Our meals included the scallops and the pork chop. This was by far the best pork chop I've ever eaten. It was moist and flavorful. The sides provided for the meals were delicious as well and provided a little "heat". I can not usually handle spicy food, but this was great. We finished our meal with the s'mores sundae. It was delicious, not too rich. The owner checked on us midway through our meal and was very friendly as well. While the meal all together was a little pricey for regular visits (for our budget), it is absolutely worth the cost. GREAT farm to table restaurant staffed by friendly people and driven by an inventive kitchen! With the amount of work I do in the area around Fort Wayne, I have now eaten at several highly rated venues around town. I have no idea, however, why I've waited so long to eat at Tolon?! ---bbq pork belly | "bourbonyaki" glaze | watermelon | gochujang vinaigrette | herb salad--- I started with the BBQ Pork Belly almost curious how this combination of flavors would play out. I was not disappointed. THIS is a great dish! I'm a huge fan of gochujang and I loved the heat and the sweet crunch of watermelon. ---steak frites |new york strip steak | duck fat frites | bone marrow demi | tolon butter--- After the flavor-splosion of the BBQ Pork Belly, this dish wasn't as powerful as my palate needed it to be, but it was still delicious. I was prepared for the bone marrow sauce to bring the saltiness demi glace typically provides, however, it was surprisingly light. Thankfully Tolon provides a smart little salt cup with wooden ladle which I used liberally on the steak. The duck fat fries were a solid addition. I asked for the aioli everyone raves about only to find it a rather strange pairing. ---blueberry sorbet--- I would much rather drink my dessert than purchase anything sweet to conclude a typical meal, so I reluctantly glanced at the dessert menu my waiter dropped off. I'm always a fan of sorbet and I found myself ordering the flavor of the evening (see picture). It was the perfect ending to an exciting meal. --brussel sprouts-- *Fall 2018 Menu YUM! Great combination of chilies, fish sauce, and sweetness with the charred/fried sprouts. You could eat a plate of this by yourself! --duck breast-- *Fall 2018 Menu Uninspired. The duck itself was tasty and cooked to my preference, but the tasteless puree below + the unseasoned hash did nothing to add levels of flavor. Surprisingly the first meal I've not enjoyed. --pomegranate & sumac sorbet-- *Fall 2018 Menu Upgraded to two scoops for $8. Much more reasonable for the price. #yum I will most definitely be returning to Tolon in the future to try some of the other imaginative combinations Chef Nolot & Trabel dream up. We went to Tolon during savor Fort Wayne and everything we ordered was just absolutely wonderful except for one entree. To start, we shared the mac & cheese and shaved brussels & kale caesar salad. Both to die for. I would not recommend skipping out on that salad. So so worth it!! As our entrees, we ordered the ribeye and cheeseburger. Both were ordered medium rare. The ribeye was delectable, however, the burger was overdone and dry. We did not complain as everything else we had was 5 star but I was shocked they served this burger. I could get a better burger at burgerfi for half the price! To end the night, we tasted both desserts, the s'mores ice cream sundae and Nutella cheesecake.
