This place has came recommended by a friend, so I had to check it out . I love the 50s vibe . The menu was very familiar to another Rochester chain - Bill Gray's . I arrived just in time to get a root beer float for only $1.99 (available at 3-4pm daily ) I ordered a mushroom Swiss burger and an order of cheese fries . The burger was tasty but the fries were a bit of a let down for the price - not much melty cheese on them . Tom Whals, what can I say about this Rochester area burger joint that I've frequented since I was a kid. Outstanding bacon cheeseburgers, fries, dill pickles, and much more.... Most of the Tom Whals in the area have an Abbotts custard. Which serves up good custard and milkshakes. Tom Whals has Pepsi products. Which is a big plus for me. Let's talk about the main show at Tom Whals. The bacon cheeseburger. It's a hand pressed burger that's seasoned just right. Throw on some white american cheese and crispy bacon, and you got yourself one tasty burger dripping with a little grease. So, you know it's good for burger standards. Their markee burger is the Whalburger. I've never tried it, but from what I hear, it's a good one. Overall, I've never been disappointed when coming to this classic burger joint. read more

Tips for healthier options, you can have the haddock baked instead of fried, and there is grilled chicken and salad. The burgers are great especially with their hot sauce which is awesome! Fries are the chunkier ones, and they have pepsi products. Abbots ice cream is always a great dessert after your meal or on its own. Customer service prompt and friendly. Lots of booths and seating. Came here on the suggestion Tried the mushroom swiss burger value meal with side of mushrooms The fries are seriously ore ida style crinkle cut I think but were a crispy golden yellow lacking and some flavor I felt (comes as large portion FYI with no seasoning like salt) the fried mushrooms were crispy and juicy (smaller portion) The mushroom Swiss burger was smashed style it seemed and was fairly juicy with decent flavor. Topped with steak sauce which I found interesting. The bun I felt was too much in proportion to the burger itself. Update... No luck on the portion sizes. Almost $11 for a grilled chicken sandwich and a drink and the chicken didn't cover half of the roll. On top of that the chicken was on the chewy side. Had to take an impromptu trip out to the region this weekend (day trip..). So like the other recent reviews of this part of the world, this was a "pandemic take-out" scenario. Tom Wahl's is a beloved Rochester area institution...much in the same vain as Bill Gray's. Wahl's secret specialties go beyond the Americana burgers and fries..they do the Rochester soul food (Garbage Plates, Zweigel weenies, and a very good haddock "lite coating" fish fry). Plus, they stuck an Abbott's Frozen Custard at this location in case your arteries needed an extra coating of cement. We went for the Wahlburger combo this time which is a burger (sort of smooshed with a piece of Canadian bacon-esque ham with lettuce, tomato, and a mayoish Wahlsauce). The fries like Bill Gray's were the crinkle cut variety and way too large a portion for one person (which the birds on Canadaigua Lake appreciated). Both quite good...they like to call their burger steakburgers in this part of the world to make it sound fancy (I generally find the Rochester area a bit uppity anyway...unjustified considering the city and locale..)...but it's your griddle fried burger. A slice of Swiss for good measure. A very good option if one is in a hurry in this part of the world..not cheap at 25 dollars for two meal deals but fine for circumstances. Next time I'll just get the burger.. Do not confuse this place for the Masshole version of Wahlburger...this is a Rochester area staple and has nothing to do with the other.... read more

I moved to the area almost 10 years ago, and for some reason, I never visited a Tom Wahl's. Huge mistake on my part! I used to go to the Burger Shack in Victor till they closed. Never knowing that right down the road from me was a haven for a true burger lover. I ordered the Wahlburger with bacon to start, I'll tell you right now I'm absolutely coming back for the Big Bopper, and the onion rings, cuz this time I had the fries. But what really impressed me were the employees. I asked for salt from a young man, he promptly said where it was, as he was walking towards it. That's not a common occurrence, especially when it comes to fast food. Every person working behind the counter genuinely wanted to make sure I enjoyed my visit, never knowing it was my first time. I've been going to this Tom Wahl's for a number of years now, which has been completely fine, until recently. Not only is their website consistently down so that I'm unable to place an order before picking up food, but lately they've had new hires answer the phone that don't understand good customer service. If you're uncertain of what someone wants, ask for clarification! Don't assume what a customer wants. My husband wanted their grilled chicken sandwich as a combo meal - thats not a hard feat - and instead we got a grilled cheeseburger. When my husband and I went back, we brought the food (uneaten, untouched) and I asked for a refund. I ride my motorcycle out there every year for their burger. They load it up with cheese, so if you don't want it sticking to the roof of your mouth be sure to ask. I don't particularly find their root beer to be anything spectacular, so I usually just opt for a Pepsi. The employees taking orders are typically summer job kids, so there is occasional confusion/miscommunication, but they are supposed to read back your order after to prevent mistakes. I've never had anything wrong with my order. They'll give you your drink cup and a buzzer, so you can find a seat and wait for it to be ready (there is no wait staff). Four stars feels a little high, but I think Yelp, like higher ed these days, suffers from "grade inflation." This is a great burger, period. I have always believed that there is nothing better than a really good hamburger, and this place provides exactly that. They are fresh and cooked to order, with some nice crust and lacing on the outside. The default cheese here is Swiss, which is outstanding. Overall, it's a fantastic regional burger chain. In comparison to other things people would know, it's definitely far better than Steak-n-Shake, which I do love--as a proper Midwesterner. And it's better than the vastly overrated In-N-Out, which during my four years living in SoCal, I never understood the veneration of the place. The latest burger chain craze that everyone knows is Five Guys. Based on the burger alone, I'd put Tom Wahl's on par with Five Guys or a very close second, although Wahl's burgers were about two bucks cheaper across the board. (I did not have the fries, though, which were frozen, so Five Guys would win on that account.) Tom Wahl's serves up GREAT homemade root beer, too. Bottom line: if I had a Tom Wahl's near me in NC, I'd only ever go here for a burger fix. read more

This was our first time here and with the yelp reviews we thought we'd check it out. The place doesn't look like anything special from the outside. Going in it has a diner feel. You walk up to order, we ordered a burger with a side of chili cheese fries, a mushroom Swiss burger with onion rings and two kids meals (cheese burger and hot dog). Each item besides the kids meals were separate cost which I didn't really care for. They give you a buzzer so you know when to go pick it up. It didn't take to long to get our food. Their classic burger was a good size and tastes great their fries are thick crinkle style. I'd say one of our favorite things was their home brand root beer.
