Lots of many different kids of restaurants in this area. This seemed intriguing so we gave it a try. To much of our surprise, this was a fabulous find. Little pricey but the food was excellent and the service was incredible. Started with the Barbara bread w/ roasted tomato butter ($12 for 2 large/thick pieces) and the Welsh rarebit ($8 for 1 big/ thick pieces). Both of these breads were very different from each other. Both were heavy but very flavorful. The rarebit had a very nice / thick cheese crust on top of a spongy bread that was a compliment to the cheese. The other was a thicker cut with not a lot of flavor but the tomato butter on it was a fun, tangy spread. Both of these starters were good and seemed house made or very fresh if not. The mains were Trout and chips ($43) that had 2 bones- not a big deal, had no fishy taste whatsoever with a very lightly crisp breading , Black Cod with Suva Curry sauce ($42) and Rancho Gordo black eyed peas with grilled Maitake ($18). All 3 dishes were very different but very tasty and had flavor on flavor with nice sized portions. We had the Sticky Toffee Pudding with a burnt milk ice cream for dessert. It wasn't my thing but my table mates devoured it. The service here was beyond exceptional. 5 stars just for that. Nice selection of wines and bottled waters. Atmosphere a little noisy as we sat inside but during nice weather, there's rooftop dining which we will be back to try. Overall a little pricey BUT you are paying for a wonderful food experience and top notch service. It's surrounded by lots of other restaurants and businesses in an easy to park parking lot. Barbari Bread & roasted tomato butter is sooooo good. the bread has sesame seeds and the butter has a good flavor (not too tomatoey for those who are nervous). masumoto nectarine & long bean salad with chili dressing is good, but way more beans than nectarine slices. charred zucchini & corn with tomatillo kosho salsa was GREAT. obsessed with the dressing. tuna was good. when we came the first time it was fresh then when we came the second time it was aged! haha. same fish i bet. the ribeye steak with pepper chimichurri & tomato is perfectly cooked, but the portion is TINY. with all the other stuff we got, I was full, but the two small strips was shocking. dessert was really good. i liked the strawberry shortcake one, my husband preferred the chocolate cremeux (big salt flavor on that). another time i had a special, which was a peach from japan drizzled with almond skin oil. i wanted it because it was from japan, but it actually tasted like a regular peach. however, the almond skin oil was absolutely amazing. it had almost a caramel taste to it. my husband also liked the knickerbocker sundae a lot. it comes with a few toppings you can add on (raspberries, almonds, caramel). read more

The best, freshest food I have ever had. Our small family reunion of 4 ate an amazing dinner of sunchoke dip, trout and chips, black cod, duck confit, baribari bread and don't get me started in the sticky toffee pudding! The meal was so delicious we had breakfast the next morning before an airport drop off. Since I had a long drive home and a lunch date at CPK, I switched it to Tomat. Ya'll I want to love this place so bad....I'm hoping my experiencing was just a bad day because I'd give Tomat 10/10 for all aspects....except for the food unfortunately. Food I'd probably give a 3.5 or 3.75 out of 5 if I could split hairs. I went with a friend and our meal started out REALLY strong with the bread, but then slowly deteriorated from there. I will throw in a caveat that my assumption from this spot is that they are really trying to highlight the beautiful and raw ingredients throughout the menu, but the consistent thing I was lacking in essentially all bites I tasted after the bread was flavor and in some cases even a dusting of salt would have helped. Service was exceptional with a really awesome server who knew his stuff well (I'm so sorry I wish I remembered his name), gave thoughtful recommendations and took care of us. Ambiance and aesthetic of the restaurant is super cute, not too crowded and I love the open kitchen concept. Outside of the Barbari bread (10/10), we also ordered: their version of a ceasar salad (7/10) with an interesting flavor and looked very pretty, tuna sashimi (6/10), roasted potatoes (6/10), and the trout and chips (6/10). Tried Tomat for the first time tonight with a friend, and overall it was a great experience. We started with the Barbari Bread & Roasted Tomato Butter and the Tuna Tartare & Roastie. The bread came out soft, warm, and moist -- simple but done really well -- and the tomato butter on the side was a delightful, flavorful touch. The tartare had an interesting spin on a classic, and while different, it was still enjoyable. For mains, we shared the Fenugreek Roast Potatoes (V), the Vaca Vieja Ribeye with Pepper, and the Black Cod & Grilled Eggplant with Suva Curry. The ribeye, grass-fed and sustainably sourced like the rest of their ingredients, was cooked to perfection and had excellent depth of flavor. The black cod was moist and tender, with the curry sauce adding a unique, aromatic element that worked beautifully (though you could enjoy it even without the cod). The potatoes rounded things out nicely. We also tried a few cocktails: the margarita, lemon drop, and the hibiscus & basil. My friend wasn't a fan of the first two, but I found the hibiscus & basil to be refreshing and well-balanced. Takeaway: Tomat puts clear care into sourcing and execution, and while not every flavor profile hit the mark for us, the highlights -- particularly the ribeye and the black cod -- made the evening worthwhile. Horrible service, why put a phone number if you can't get in touch with anyone? Spent 3 hours trying to call and make a reservation only have phone calls screened. And I mean screened. Tomat in Westchester turned what could have been a disappointing birthday evening into one of the best dining experiences we've had. We arrived during rush hour and were told they had one table left. Even though they were completely packed on a Thursday night, we were greeted with genuine warmth and gratitude. The atmosphere felt inviting -- like walking into a lively family dinner. Our server, Travis, couldn't have been kinder (and by coincidence, he and my daughter were in theater together in high school!). The General Manager, Miley, was incredibly patient and knowledgeable, taking the time to answer all of our questions about the food and sustainability. When my husband mentioned he was British, we learned the owner, Harry, is British as well -- and both Harry and his wife Natalie were gracious and welcoming. The food was phenomenal -- creative, thoughtful, and unlike anything we've had before. As we left, my daughter said, "That was the best birthday dinner I've ever had." Tomat didn't just serve dinner -- they made it a memory. We will be back this weekend to try their proper English pot pie. read more

I hope you'll accept my critique as advice with the best intent. I love that someone is trying to elevate Westchester dining. There are some very tasty original ideas here. Please rethink your value and prices though. Portions are too small and too pricey for me to return. We are not a $20 cocktail town. We're just not. My dinner for 2 with a few glasses of wine ended up $200 all in. This isn't going to foster regular visits. Your wine pours are too small. Also, we had the burger as one of our entrees. I found out about Tomat from the Michelin Guide and was really excited that it's right down the road from us. This farm to table concept has all the elements of a great experience - minimal tasteful decor, an interesting cocktail menu, unique dishes, and that California cool factor only found in LA. We had some really great dishes and only one I wouldn't get again (the fish & chips) because there's so many other great menu items and it was a bit on the bland side. The cocktails we ordered were really nice but went down very quickly. And wine pours are very light! The stand out dish for us was the ajo blanco! A must order. We also saw many tables with the pork and poultry pie (aka a $95 potpie!!!). I am curious to try that in the future but with a group larger than 2. Our server was very attentive and the front of the house staff was very nice. All a big plus! Overall I think there's something special here. And Tomat is a great addition to Westchester. read more

I was really excited to try this new spot in my neighborhood--the aesthetic is simple, clean, and beautifully organized. I ordered a few pastries and an oat latte, but unfortunately, the food didn't quite live up to the vibe. The oat latte tasted more like warm milk with barely any coffee, and the croissants were overcooked. The staff was lovely, and the place has so much potential, but to truly stand out, the food and coffee need a bit more attention. Food is great. Innovative and just great. Service is great. It gets a 4 because of two issues: 1: insanely noisy and 2: insanely tiny portions. So loud I could not hear the lovely wait person at all. Portions were so tiny that after ordering a starter and a main, both of us then ordered another course. My starter, lobster tostada, was two crackers with great tasting stuff on each. My friends sashimi starter was so tiny it was a bite. My duck main was two slivers of duck, something wrapped and a couple small pools of sauce and two tiny bits of rhubarb. Tasted great! But still hungry. I ordered soup and it was great, he ordered a bowl of potatoes which was not the best choice. Order the bread, everyone says it is good. Dinner for 2, 3 food courses plus two desserts plus sparkling water was $200 before tip. Again really really good, unusually good food. read more

I had seen this place several times and have been wanted to try it so i finally made a reservation on a Friday night. We had reservations for 715. When we arrived it was not crowded and parking was easy. When we entered we were greeted with a welcoming and smiling face. We were seated immediately. I loved the open floor plan and clean yet earthy decor with a shuttle swag to it, probably the lighting. It's not too bright or too dim but just right to feel relaxed and enjoy a meal. Subtle music plays in the back ground as you dine. When our waiter came over he seemed a bit rushed. I had to stop him and engage for him to loosen up. Once he realized that we didn't bite and that we're just like him.....lol just a different shade, he seemed to loosen up and relax. We even later engaged in some great conversation. One negative for me would be the glass of wine was a little on the skimpy side. A little more would be nice. Our waiter was really nice and service was good. He recommended some items that we chose and really liked. He also helped us gauge how much to order so that we would have enough but not too much, which we appreciated. I liked this place. The service was good. The drinks were tasty, and the ambiance was nice. I loved the open kitchen. It's like watching a live episode of Top Chef. At Tomat, you get dinner and a show! We tried the bread, the trout, the steak bites with watercress salad, two of the salads(Green Salad and Sunchoke with Tomat), and the banana split. My favorite was the trout, which was fried in a light tempura batter along with veggies from the farmers market. The star of the show was the dipping sauce which was light and tangy. The sauce complimented the fish and veggies perfectly. The bread was light, hot, crispy and delicious. The banana split with the blondie and ice cream was the perfect cherry on top. I found the steak a little too chewy. The larger green salad was good, but a little bitter. My favorite salad was the Sunchoke with the mustard vinaigrette. All in all, really tasty. I'm the foodie in my family. The wife has a thing about fancy places. The menu reads like it's a fancy place. If you have to Google the menu items then it's a "fancy place." So I planned a dinner with two of my friends and we went tonight. While the food is certainly elevated, the vibe is chill, like a neighborhood casual place. The staff are in t-shirts! But our server demonstrated deep knowledge of the menu, ask the details of every dish. Put us all immediately at ease that whatever we ordered it would be amazing. We kept the appetizers simple: Babari bread with roasted tomato butter, and sunset rockfish crudo. The bread was warm, fresh, and had a sesame flavor that was both savory and a little sweet. The crudo came marinated in what tasted like ponzu sauce, and was served with translucent slices of "unripe cherry" and fresh wasabi (not the green paste you get at sushi restaurants, but real wasabi). Light, lively, and delicious! Our mains were across the board top shelf: I had pork three ways (loin, belly, and English sausage) with a nectarine "chamoy" (basically it was the best barbecue sauce you'll ever have). One buddy had lamb with a mint sauce and chanterelles. And there other buddy had a duck "tamale" with a walnut and pomegranate mole, plus a grilled duck breast. We shared a side dish of roasted potatoes with fenugreek (vegan). We splurged for dessert, sharing the sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch and burnt milk ice cream. The secret? Date bread. Insanely good! Maybe it was the casual vibe, and I'm literally splitting hairs, but the only mark against this incredible restaurant was the plating. I just think that it was the only incomplete aspect of an otherwise flawless meal. A little more attention to how the dishes looked at the plate, and I think Tomat could easily earn a Michelin star! read more

Tomat offers an exciting dining experience, but I'd recommend going with a party of four or more. While the price per dish is on the higher side, the portions are generous--almost too much so for a party of two. For example, the $88 duck with pomegranate mole was outstanding, but sharing it between just two people became overwhelming. The same goes for the Barbari bread appetizer with roasted tomato butter--delicious, but excessive for two, while perfect for four. If you're dining as a group, you'll be able to sample more of the menu without feeling like any single dish dominates the meal. Otherwise, be prepared for a one-note experience. read more

With Tomat opening earlier this week (10/30) for dinner service, visited at peak dining time on their first Saturday to finally give them a try. And I was blown away! The service was amazing and so fast despite how busy they were, the food was even better, and it was just so special getting to see a packed dining room and all the effort you could see the team putting in. Everything we had was delicious and gorgeous - I specifically wanted to take some pictures for this review to show how amazing everything looked! Only thing I didn't take a picture of was their fresh baked Barbari bread w/ roasted tomato butter. But get it, it's amazing, and it's like nothing I've ever had before. And the hospitality that the staff provided was unmatched, this was the first time I dined out in a long time where we were brought out a complimentary dish from the kitchen (the tomato salad, simple and perfect for any tomato lover). Westchester is a tiny neighborhood, literally a "fly over" neighborhood only a few miles from LAX and growing up here, I've always been proud of all the family owned businesses that have stayed strong, especially in the Westchester Triangle. We celebrated Galentine's here and followed the suggestions of staffers Gabi and Nikki. From the pornstar martinis to the sticky toffy pudding each dish was perfection! Stand out items were the special pea salad with fried parsnips and Meyer lemon dressing, the crab starter, the barbari bread with tomato butter, the beats with labneh, the black cod and the lamb (so good that we ordered 2). But the dish that had a table of chatty women was the sticky toffy pudding and its salted burnt sugar sauce. It was melt in your mouth smooth with crispy edges that gave a delightful crunch and the sauce paired with the gelato was perfection! The service was excellent and the staff very knowledgeable and friendly. A shout out to Gabi, Nikki and Adam for a flawless evening! Taste is good, but not wow quality. it's just that everything is priced really high for the portion and the presentation needs more efforts for the price. Servers are very attentive which is a plus. Minimalist idea is good but if everything looks very ikea food court meal... not sure if this place becomes my go to in Westchester... I think a lot of ppl are feeling the same way so hopefully they will find a way to work it out. They can learn from nearby restaurants such as Manchester (cool date night spot) or Truxton (family friendly restaurant) so I think it's all about branding. I don't know where Tomat stands or what they're going for. Decor is cafe but price is very fancy restaurant. My wife and I dined at Tomat this past Saturday. There were some very good things about dining here and some not so great things. Let's start with the positives... The wine selections by the glass were amazing. The black cod entree was incredible! Now the not so good things... the martini pours at $20 were minimal... I would estimate them at 1.75 ounces. NOT GOOD. The "bread" appetizer was $15.... Very over-priced. In general, the portions were small. I really do not understand how this restaurant is so highly rated. I am used to dining at high quality restaurants however this restaurant had some real "misses." The restaurant was very busy but I do not think I will be going back as for a modest dinner for two it was $250. read more
