Long wait for carry out on Memorial Day weekend, so steer clear on busy days. This is also the kind of place where you have to check your carry out before leaving: fish taco platter was supposed to come with Mexican rice & refried beans, we got white rice & black beans, with fish fajitas wraps in taco shells. We wound up picking the fish out and feeding it to the cat, the rest was fit only for the garage disposal. This was my first time at the Rockville location (there is a location in Clarksburg too). We sat out on the patio where there was still plenty of space between tables. Sometimes I'm scared to sit outside because I feel like the staff forgets about you. But not here! The staff were attentive and friendly. Now for the food- everyone enjoyed their meal and tried a bit of each other's meal. Everything was delicious and came out hot. I love Chile rellanos and I must say theirs were the best I have had any where locally. I will be back. Also really nice sized portions. Representing 2019, V is for Villa Maya. I visited twice once in July 2019 and once in latter part of 2020. My new girlfriend at that time & I were on a semi-long hike nearby on a very hot early evening. We were hungry and near here arriving maybe close to 8 PM. I enjoyed my usual choice a sit-down Mexican restaurant, enchiladas. This is better than Uncle Julio's (& less expensive), Guapo's, or others. Great enchiladas, beans, & rice. Service was good too. In addition to the usual entree, beans, & rice, you also get this delicious sweet corn-based treat, which adds to the great experience here. Of note is their happy hour menu offer 3-6 Monday through Thursday. Significantly discounted drinks and a few platters at a big discount and the portions are huge. Decor is that of a family style Mexican restaurant. However, it continues to be the service that holds this restaurant back. Celebrated Father's Day with dinner at Villa Maya. One child loved the chicken quesadilla, and our other child thought the steak burrito was too chewy (meat was very dry). Hubby loved the fajitas and strawberry margaritas, so overall a good Fathers Day meal for him! :-) I had the $40 "catch of the day" which was red snapper. Menu described the fish would "marinated, breaded and pan fried topped with garlic sauce". The fish was hugely disappointing -- way over-cooked, dry and tasteless. It seems the marinade and garlic sauce were missing, and the accompanying salad had an unpleasant mayo-based sauce that did not complement the fish. New Year's Eve, and looked for a Mexican place we haven't been to yet. We found Villa Maya on Yelp as one of the top rated Mexican restaurants in the area. At around 7:00 pm, place was busy but we promptly got a table in the bar area. We were served a bowl of chips and salsa. The salsa was warm. We enjoyed both - the chips were crisp and fresh and the salsa had a nice flavor. Could the salsa have been more spicy? Yes. But a decent salsa. And the warmth was a nice touch. We ordered a small guac (there are two sizes) with medium heat (mild, medium and hot). Although prices for guac are not on the menu (it's marked as "market price"), the small was $8.95. A very fair price for a large portion (plenty for two and we took most home). There were nice bits of onion and tomato mixed in liberally with the avocado chunks. We found the medium to be a bit too mild - could have used some kick. Would recommend the hot. The menu said it would be made table side, but it wasn't. We also ordered margaritas- one regular lime and one lime skinny. Both were very good. We each ordered fajitas - I got the steak and shrimp combo and my partner got the carne asada. Healthy portions of both. My partner requested the steak be medium and it was prepared properly. Lots of cooked onions and some cooked peppers accompanying the meat. Really enjoyed the fajitas. Overall, good food and drinks. But a couple of points I need to share: First, the regular margarita was $8.95. The skinny (same size) was $12.95. For the life of me, I can't imagine how they justify an almost 50 percent premium for skinny. Second, although the initial service was fine, the kitchen brought out our fajita entrees and placed them on a tray several feet from our table in the middle of the bar area. They were sizzling and there was steam rising from the platters. Beautiful. And there they sat. And sat. And sat. People (including us) wondering what was going on and then the sizzling stopped and the steam stopped. And the platters sat and sat. Finally, I got up and served our table myself. The wait staff comes by two minutes later and doesn't say a word. We ask him to fill our empty water glasses (which shouldn't have been allowed to be empty) and our empty salsa. Nothing was ever said about it. No explanation and no apology. (Yes, I tipped 20 percent anyway.). Overall, the food was good but as I've said in other reviews of Mexican restaurants, I can't say there's a "Wow" factor here that compels me to come back. The guac was fine, but could have been spicier. Maybe that's my fault for getting medium instead of hot. On the other hand, having to watch my sizzling fajita tray stop sizzling and then having to get up and walk several feet to serve myself at a place where the meal including tip costs $100 is infuriating. Having a skinny margarita cost almost 50 percent more than a regular margarita seems like a ripoff. I was going to give four stars for the food taste and portion sizes, but now that I think about it, I'm pretty disappointed about the other stuff for a $100 meal. And the restaurant was busy, but not at capacity. There were a couple of empty tables in the bar area when we were there. read more

The service was prompt, efficient, and professional. Carly, our server, was superb. We ordered beef tacos and a bean burrito platter as well as a corn tamal and a nonalcoholic passionfruit beverage. Everything was hot and fresh and a great portion. The taco shells were a bit greasy and the passionfruit beverage was too sweet I had to water it down. The corn tamal came with a huge side of sour cream. The complimentary chips were good but the salsa was watery and piping hot, a combination I'm not used to. Finally! A Mexican restaurant that I really enjoyed! Coming in on cinco de mayo I expected the worst but got the best. The service was average but on this day I'll give a pass. The food was great with me pushing to finish the burrito. Other places I've finished out and still ready to eat more but this was one worthy of being an entree. The other night we went to a wonderful Tex-Mex restaurant in Rehoboth Beach (Mariachi Restaurant) and my sister got steak fajitas. They were really good and, since then, I've been craving good steak fajitas. My wife did some looking online and saw a good review for Villa Maya. We had been before, but not in a while, so we decided to go there ... and what a treat. Simply put the carne asada fajita was AWESOME. Hands down best steak fajita I have had and, seriously, one of the yummiest marinated steaks I have had in a very long time. I already look forward to having it again for my birthday later this month. The tortillas that came with the fajita was excellent. Seems like a small thing - certainly not something I had given much thought to, but the flavor and texture were perfect. The Mexican rice that came with the dish also was good and tasty, but not stop to write a review about it outstanding. The salsa was fresh and well balanced and the chips were light and crispy and plentiful. My dining companions seemed to be happy with their food as well (one also had the carne asada fajita and said it was notably excellent), though, for the vegetarians, they were limited to white rice and once choice of beans because the Mexican rice and one of the beans (I can't remember which one) were made with chicken stock. On top of that the service was good (though the order was not exactly correct, though it was close and easy to fix), the prices were quite reasonable (to the extent any restaurant prices can be deemed "reasonable" any more), and there was plenty of free parking. So, if you're in the mood for Tex-Mex, Villa Maya is worth a visit. Just know that it can get busy during the dinner rush, if lots of people are ordering the fajitas, which come out on a sizzling metal plate, you will smell like fajitas after the meal, and don't forget to leave some of the carne asada fajitas for me!! read more

My husband and I really wanted to like this place, but the food was bland. Also we ordered 2 mango mousse desserts which the waiter showed us a picture of. I said that looks really good with all the chunks of mango with it. It was $6.95 for a tiny peace of mousse and no mango chunk at all. We're always craving some solid tex! David and I decided to switch up our usual Uncle Julio's trip to check out Villa Maya. We had been eyeing it ever since we stopped by Ema Rossi which is in the same shopping center. First off, their menu is HUGE! You will not be out of options coming here. It made it pretty hard to decide what to get! We ended up going with the crab quesadilla for appetizer, I got the seafood enchiladas and David got the steak fajitas. Crab quesadilla: Not bad, first bite in I got a lot of crab flavor. Almost tasted like a crab bisque! Wouldn't say there was a TON of crab but it was decent. Seafood Enchiladas: The shrimp were huge, would have been nice if it was cut up. Also good amount of scallop. I thought the enchiladas were a little cheesy for my liking, either that or it needed more protein lol. Enjoyed my rice and bean sides as usual. Steak fajitas: I was STUFFED from my entree but had a bite of David's steak. Thought the steak was SUPER juicy and flavorful, I said it was probably the best piece of steak I'd had from a fajita platter and David seemed surprised (guess he didn't agree!). It was super packed at 1:15 on a Saturday which I think is a good sign! Service was a little slow but I give grace because there were only 2 servers for our very crowded section. Waters and complimentary home fried chips and house made salsa as soon as you are seated. We started with the mussels and calamari and were surprised at the huge portions! Cooked just right, tender and flavorful. Plenty to share. I had a trio sampler platter that was so delicious - enchiladas with tender cooked chicken and beef, well seasoned. I had a class of house pinot grigio which was light with fruity notes and paired well. My companions had a salad with grilled salmon (which she says is always good) and our friend had a sirloin. I wasn't a fan of that as much as everything else but it might have been because it was cooked well done to her order. Our office ordered food for a large party, and the food arrived hot, delicious, and on time. The gentleman that delivered it was very helpful in getting set up. We had steak and chicken fajitas, paella, rice and beans, and plenty of chips, guacamole, salsa, and pico de gallo. their seafood paella had SOO much seafood in it, and it tasted fresh, and reheated very well the next day. I had a fantastic dinner at Villa Maya. I moved the the Aspen Hill part of Rockville in August and everyone in the neighborhood said I needed to have a meal at Villa Maya. This restaurant is held in high regard amongst the locals and I completely understand why. I brought my husband and mom to Villa Maya on a Saturday night and we were seated immediately. No less than 10 minutes later a server came by with water, chips, and salsa. Al around us you could see the employees pay close attention to detail, are constantly cleaning tables, and checking to make sure all their guests are being given 5 star treatment. I love that their menu labels all items that are vegetarian. That means that I can take their vegetarian items, and simply ask for them to be dairy free, and get a vegan entree. I ordered the spinach enchiladas because they come with corn tortillas which are always vegan. I just had to ask for no cheese and sour cream, and my server fully understood the order. I was shocked with the portion size of my spinach enchiladas. They came with a heart side of beans and rice, and also guacamole and pico de Gallo. The guacamole alone deserves 5 stars. It was so fresh with a great amount of lime juice. I loved that it had freshly forced veggies in it and was much more than just smashed avocado. The spinach enchiladas had a brilliant colored spinach inside, They were clearly prepared with freshly wilted spinach, and were fully coated in a savory and tangy green tomatillo sauce. The rice and beans were everything I hoped for in a Tex-Mex experience. They accompanied the enchilada well, and were great supporting stats to the meal with flavor and sustenance. I absolutely loved my experience at Villa Maya. The employees were so efficient and attentive. The food was top of the line as far as Tex-Mex goes, and it feels great supporting a family owned business. Ordered to go on a Saturday night , received my order which was a lomo saltado , yuca con chicharron along other appetizers. The rice that came with the lomo was mush the meat looked old and over cooked. The yuca con chicharron brought a hair with it. I saved the food in the fridge to be able to bring it back to them. I reached out to the restaurant a few days after and then i received a call from the manager which all he told me was that he basically couldn't do anything about it. I've worked in the food industry and i know for a fact he could of atleast offered to give me a credit or something but he didn't care and he was adamant that he couldn't do anything. Got home and the fajita combo platter was not good at all. It looked like they just threw huge chunks of fatty steak (expect some fat on steaks but not huge chunks), halfway cut the chicken(big chunks), the rice was dry and the food did not look appetizing with the exception of the guacamole which was decent. In the past the food has been good but this time was extremely disappointing and embarrassing as I was serving this food to guests. I supposedly spoke with a manager who just made excuses for the food saying that that's just the way they serve their food. I have dined in before and know that the quality was subpar last night. Very happy with our meal at Villa Maya. My brother used to come here all the time so he recommended this place for a large group of us. This might be our go to place instead of Guapos and Uncle Julio's. The service was pretty good and food came out pretty fast even though there were 11 of us. Most ordered the Carna Asada and they were quite satisfied. I got the combo plate with two enchilada's. The cheese one was good, but wish it was more melted inside. I like how you can get the beef enchilada with either ground or shredded beef. But my favorite dish was the Fried Ice Cream! Brought back so many memories eating the ones from Chi-Chi's. read more

If this were Texas, it would be a 3. But, since this is Maryland and options for Mexican are extremely limited, It's about a 3.5, and I'm rounding up. We moved here from TX a year and a half ago and my poor native Texan hubby is missing his comfort food. We're trying to find a place in the area that has good enchiladas, rice and beans, since that is not an area where Uncle Julio's (an actual TX chain) excels and we're still looking for someplace great. The things I liked the most: *Chips were good and the salsa had the right flavor profile (warm, smokey tomato) but was missing the requisite heat to be authentic. *The strawberry margarita my husband ordered was good, sweet and a bit of a kick to it. *The cheese enchilada w/ green salsa from the enchilada plate was mucho tasty, and the beef one was fine (though no heat on the chile). *The tortillas were fresh *Prices were pretty reasonable and they have a good happy hour Things I was less enthused about: *The beef fajitas were not quite on point. The lime flavor was overpowering, but the meat was very tough and hadn't been broken down at all which implies they just dunked it in margarita mix before grilling it, and didn't let it go for a long time like the good fajita places do. Just go to Uncle Julio's if you want beef fajitas. Fajitas are my favorite in general but these weren't amazing, and fortunately we do have UJs available for this. *The pico de gallo that came with the fajitas had NO jalapeno at all... presumably because Marylanders can't handle spice. *The refried beans were just ok and the Spanish rice was just bland. I can make both of these much better at home. The secret to good beans is bacon grease folks, but Ducal brand beans are actually better just fried straight out of the can than most restaurant beans including this one. Rice is tougher to perfect at home, but I know my stuff. *The chicken in the chicken enchilada was bland. *You have to sit in the bar for happy hour prices and the bar is too freaking loud. The people sitting next to us were so loud I wish I'd brought my noise-cancelling headphones. I would have preferred dining on the patio but it would be more expensive to get margaritas that way. *Service was not horrible, but couldn't fully keep up with the volume of people either. It took a very long time to get my diet coke and I was never offered a refill. All in all, like I said, I'm grading on a curve big time because of the lack of competition - most Mexican and Tex-Mex in the area is flat out bad, so mediocre becomes better than average. We probably will come again just so my love can get some enchiladas but when we were eating he kept saying he needs to just learn to make them himself.... if we do return I'll probably just get a cheese enchilada plate and not waste calories on the rice. read more
