*** 4 1/2 Stars *** ------------------------------------------------ We first heard about Tommaso's from watching Samantha Brown when she did an NYC Christmas episode. She ate at Tommaso's on Christmas Eve and had the feast of the 7 fishes. During the show, Tommaso (Thomas Verdillo) sang opera---which is what he sometimes does for his customers (but, alas, not when we were there). It struck me as the type of Italian restaurant that we like---an old school red sauce place. We grew up in the Northeast, taking such places for granted---that is until we moved to the DC Metro area. So...I got on hopstop.com and printed up directions to Tommaso's using our hotel as a starting point. It's pretty straightforward --- take the D train to 18th Avenue and walk about 1 mile. There is a bus you could take from the 18th Avenue station, if you prefer. We got to the place around 5:30 p.m. on a Friday night. Tommaso himself greeted us and had a waiter seat us. This waiter ended up being our waiter and sadly, he is one of the reasons we can't give this place a full 5 stars. The waiter was sullen and gave off an aura of being put up on. For example, the minute we were seated, he asked what we wanted to drink. We hadn't looked at the drinks menu. My husband chose Chianti and told the waiter to give me a bit of time to decide. I was leaning towards getting a soft drink when my husband convinced me to get a whiskey sour on the rocks. The place wasn't very busy at all in the main dining room. However, there was a private party going on in another room. Our waiter wasn't working that room but still he took his time getting to us to take our order. He wasn't rude or nasty---but he did need to improve his attitude. We chose the 3 course menu which was $25/person. For my first course (appetizer) I chose zucchini fritti and my husband chose pasta e fagioli. The zucchini fritti was just okay---I have had far better, thus another reason for not going for 5 stars. My husband really enjoyed his pasta e fagioli. It had lots of stock in it and I felt it was almost like having a whole meal. This was a tasty soup---just like home made. For my second course, I chose lasagna della Mama while my husband chose ravioli and meatballs. The lasagna was very tasty. I noticed that it didn't have ground beef in it rather it had shredded beef. My husband liked his ravioli and meatballs. The meatballs were small and neither of our portions were overly huge. While we were eating our main course, Tommaso came by to ask how I liked his mother's lasagna. I told him that I was enjoying it and commented on how it was different than any lasagna I ever had due to the shredded beef. He told me that ground beef was the Sicilian way while shredded beef was the Neapolitan way. He told us that in years past, women would cook up a large quantity of meat and would use it in different recipies so nothing went to waste. Also, at one time he put sausage in his lasagna but customers found that to be odd so he stopped doing that. For our third course, I chose Italian cheesecake while my husband chose an apple tart. These were the 2 desserts that Tommaso recommended. He told us that he didn't like traditional Italian cheesecake so he came up with his own version. He made it less dry and more lemony flavored. The end result is a very tasty but not overly rich cheesecake. The apple tart came with a marscapone sauce which added a tart flavor to counteract the sweetness. Again, this, too, was tasty. We left feeling full but not ready to explode. This is a popular neighborhood joint as we noticed some regular customers came in and Tommaso addressed them by name. Even though it was our first time dining here, Tommaso made us feel welcome. As we left, he told us to visit again. We most certainly will! read more

Tomassos is an uber charming restaurant- with a piano player who sings opera and decorations straight out of someone's home. The family photos in the bathroom are so cute. You feel very much at home here and my mom would have loved the live music. The food is old school and some dishes could use some new schooling. Nice bread w/ housemade pesto and a good arancini start the service. There is a $27 prix fixe which has plenty of choices for appetizers and entrees. I went with the stuffed artichoke which they didn't have so I changed to baked clams which were standard. For my main I went with lasagna which was quite dissapointing. Overcoooked pasta with cheese tasting like Polly-O not delicate and felt like not a lot of thought went into this dish which can be such a treat. The dessert of Italian cheesecake dusted with flour was good. Sad & shocking that this is the last Italian left restaurant in this area where there was once so many memorable ones. read more

I have been going to this place since 1989. Have not been there in 5 years since my fathers funeral. Visited today 10/15/2023. First off they have a Russian guy singing Italian songs and he sounds horrible. The food was the worst Italian food I have ever had. My wife was grossed out. Even another couple there where complaining. I'm assuming the original owners are gone. What a horrible experience. I ordered the Trippa Siciliana. The waiter asked me if I wanted pasta or potatoes in it. Puzzled I said potato of course. So out comes the plate with "3" pieces of trip and flash home fried potatoes. Gross beyond gross. I will never go back. My wife got pork cutlet in Gorgonzola sauce. Not a good combo. What a shame. Please save your money. read more

Before you even enter this location you feel like you are in for a treat. The exterior is very elegant and for this neighborhood extremely original. This chef Tom Verdillo has two jobs at this Italian restaurant. When he is not cooking some of his amazing food, he belts out songs that will make you feel like you are dining in Naples. The people that dine here look like extras from "The Sopranos" and have heavy Brooklyn, Staten Island and Jersey Italian accents. The décor is upscale, with extensive wood paneling, big fancy mirrors, and ceramic plates and figurines. I tried the lasagna di melanzane when I visited this Bath Beach Italian restaurant. Their freshly made pasta is prepared perfectly with eggplant, pork sausage, ricotta, and Pecorino Romano in a zesty tomato sauce. My wife tried the pappardelle al sugo di coniglio. This was a more firm pasta topped by a rabbit sauce accented by generous portions of meat (this comes with anchovies, but we said no thanks). Sure, the place may come off a tad tacky and at times looks like a scene from Goodfellas, but what's on the plate is magical. read more

arrived at Tomasso as a group of 5 at 7:30 on a Saturday night. Not having reservations, we were pleased to be seated in about 10 minutes. After that, things went downhill. It took slightly longer than expected for our waiter to make a stop at our table, but nothing to raise red flags. We all opted for the prix fixe 3-course dinner menu. The first course /appetizers took a moderately long time to come out - more than 30 minutes. The mozzarella/peppers/tomato was decent. Zucchini fries very good. Baked clams not so great. After that, it took over an hour to get our entrees. OVER. AN. HOUR. Tables who were seated after us had their food before us. Over the course of that hour, our waiter disappeared for long periods of time, nowhere to be found. Once the food did come out, it fell somewhere between average and disappointing. Chicken Parm, which in an Italian restaurant I would expect to be served on a bed of (or with a side of) pasta came "bare". Not a green vegetable to be found. Forgive me, there was a sprig of parsley. The chicken parm itself was ok, but the sauce which was sparingly drizzled on top tasted like it had burnt in the pan. The table got a small plate of potatoes to share. For the five of us, that means we each got a wedge approximately the size of one steak fry. By the time we finished eating we had already been in the restaurant for 2 hours. The waiter reappeared and asked if we'd like coffee. No, we told him, we were ready for our third course. With that he walked away and visited two other tables. Eventually he sent someone else by to offer us coffee. What's with the coffee? Apparently they saw that we were upset and wanted to offer it "on the house". Sorry but a $2 cup of coffee (which only one of the five of us was interested in) does not make up for the deplorable service. We finally insisted that he take our dessert orders, and asked for the check simultaneously. Cheesecake got good reviews, rice pudding was ok but odd in that it was citrus flavored. Our best guess is that the waiter forgot to put in our order. That said, any respectable establishment will fess up and offer some sort of compensation (a cup of coffee doesn't count). They didn't do that, didn't apologize, didn't acknowledge a problem, etc. despite it being clear that we were unhappy. And we were NOT a problem table, not picky, not impatient, not any of the scenarios that would aggravate a waiter. We just didn't think it was right to be in a restaurant for 2.5 hours for what would have taken half that time anywhere else. I cannot recommend this restaurant. Food was average at best, service was terrible, and the fact that they didn't try to "fix" the situation is unacceptable. UPDATE: at least one member of our party had his credit card double charged. Live in the neighborhood and wanted to try it out. I took my my pregnant fiance and the food wasn't bad, they had a lady singing classic songs so that was entertaining, but...the service. The waiter seemed annoyed to take our order which was pretty simple to take down since the menu is in english. God help us if we wanted anything else like another drink or appetizer, because he was no where to be found. When he finally showed up we didnt even want our dessert/coffee just the check. The decor is odd.. It's September and there are ornaments and bells hanging from the ceiling. However the three course lunch special is delicious and generous (you get passed the decor immediately)! For a restaurant with very average food the waiter acted like he was doing us a favor taking our order. Not only was he unfriendly and not attentive, but he actually had the stones to get annoyed when we questioned how some of the dishes on the menu were prepared, and because we weren't immediately ready to order. During our entire meal he never asked us if everything was okay, and again acted bothered when I had to request fresh pepper for my pasta. I would have tolerated average tasting Italian food, paying $45 per bottle for an $8 California Cabernet, and a horrible tasting rice pudding that they ruined by drenching it with anisette had my party of 6 been treated well but unfortunately we were not. I came for the price fixe lunch special: an appetizer (stuffed mushrooms), a main course (ravioli and meatballs), a dessert (tortoni), and a glass of house wine for $25. My husband, a friend and I decided to stop by Tommaso's for a nice Italian dinner before exploring the neighborhood light show. Based on current reviews, I had high expectations - but had a less than stellar experience that others deserve to hear about. A handful of my gripes: - Once seated, we had to wait nearly 20 minutes to get any attention, menus, bread or beverages at all. My husband had to ask for a place setting, which the waiter responded that he didn't need it yet because there wasn't any food on the table. When the food finally arrived, he still didn't have a place setting and had to help himself to dishes and silverware. - All three of us chose the pre-fixe menu; a great cost for what's advertised. After nearly 30-40 minutes, the first course came out.... and was delivered to the wrong table. So my husband and I were given a wet/limp salad "on the house" to make up for it. - When the first course finally came, it was obvious the waiter messed up my order. He argued with me that I hadn't ordered an appetizer with my pre-fixe menu, to which I informed him that would defeat the purpose of ordering the pre-fixe menu. He said that he would put in my order for the appetizer. - About 30 minutes later, I still hadn't received my appetizer so I just asked the waiter to cancel the pre-fixe altogether and to simply bring me a regular entree portion of penne. When he brought the entrees, it was obvious he hadn't listened to me because he didn't bring the entree - he brought part of my original pre-fixe. I finally just told him to take my food back and that I would be paying for only the glass of wine that I'd had while waiting. - When I attempted to share my experience with the owner, I was berated and yelled at in a very public dining room. He very aggressively asked me "What do you want me to do about it??" and told me to "get over it; mistakes happen." When it became obvious that he cared about as much as his waiter did, I stopped the conversation and walked away. - When I attempted to pay, I gave the owner the check with two debit cards inside. When he saw that I wanted to split the check, he called me a spoiled B*tc* snob and continued to berate me. I left my husband and friend to handled the rest and left the restaurant in tears. I have never, EVER had such horrific service. I didn't expect anything other than a genuine apology from this owner - but he was too concerned with singing his christmas carols at the piano than he was about managing his understaffed restaurant. I understand that some nights are insane, but that type of behavior is absolutely unacceptable. He complains that they're so busy because people travel to Dyker Heights during the holidays to see the lights every year. If you know this in advance, PLAN for this by staffing your establishment accordingly. Don't be mad at the customer when they complain that they were there for 2.5 hours and didn't eat anything more than bread and wine. I'd love to comment on the food but, unfortunately, I wasn't served any. The bread was nice, but surely the breadbasket and bloomin' onion at outback across the street is a better decision than what I dealt with Saturday night. read more

I was shocked at the service we received at this restaurant. Let me preface this: I am an incredibly patient and good diner. I have a lot of friends in hospitality and many friends that are servers. I let A LOT go. I tip minimum 20 percent for fair service, but usually closer to 25 or 30 and I was ready to walk out leaving nothing for the first time in my life. We were seated right away, thankfully. We had two young children in our party. Just came from seeing the lights and we were hungry. In great spirits (I will say they have the festive thing down complete with Xmas caroling during dinner, too bad the piano player couldn't lend a hand to our servers). And then we waited about 30 minutes before anyone came to give us water, ask for our order. The waiters would look at us and move on. When they finally acknowledged us we were rushed through our ordering. I asked for a recommendation and realized quickly that I better not. The waiter was not interested or available at all. We received our decent appetizers shortly after we ordered. We then waited almost an hour for our entrees. An hour! With two kids at the table. No one during that time came to check on us, refill our water, offer an explanation. Nothing. We asked once where our food was and were scoffed at. We asked for a straw for my friends daughter and the request was completely ignored. When our entrées came I was shocked that this was what we waited for. Plain plates of overpriced pasta. After a delightful evening watching the x-mas light @ Dyker Heights with my 3.5 year old, my wife and our best friends, which also have a 3.5 year old, we stopped at Tommaso Italian Restaurant were we were greeted by a heavy set man sitting at the bar, "DON'T HOLD THE DOOR OPEN IS COLD OUTSIDE, which I replied, "I'm holding it for my baby", at that answer he stood up from the bar stool and saw the baby walking in, looked at me and just smiled, I found out later it was the owner Mr. Tommaso. After lookin back at the evening, I should have taken that as an omen because a beautiful evening with family and friends took an unbelievable turn for the worse from the greeting of the owner to the worst service I have had in a restaurant. During our dinner, the conversation led to the idea that maybe they are understaffed to maybe we're out of our element by being Spanish and not Italian. We took a ride to see and celebrate the X-mas spirit from Astoria to Dyker Heights with family and friends and it was great until "Tommaso" entered the picture. I will not let this negative experience in this neighborhood stop me from trying again next time but I hope this review saves someone else from experiencing the same. read more

This is more like a 2.5 rating. I really want to love this place but it just doesn't cut it. While the decor is extremely cozy and unique (you really do feel like you are at your Italian aunt's house), the service and food are below par. I understand that this type of restaurant is designed for those who want the full dining experience and will spend upwards of two hours plus in the restaurant, but the wait for the food was beyond tolerable and the food was just mediocre. I appreciate that the ingredients are fresh and high quality, but the flavor is lacking. Another thing that is lacking is the service. The wait staff is rather terrible. There were 1 or 2 waiters that seemed ok but most were either extremely rude or sweet but sooo slow and couldn't answer the simplest of questions. Not to mention that one time after waiting over an hour between our apps/main course (and---one of the apps was wrong but I took what he brought anyway just to save time), two people opted not to get their dessert from the three course menu since their choice was sold out-by 830 pm- the waiter messed up the bill and was rather rude when we asked him to fix it, despite the fact that we had not even complained and were rather gracious about all of the previous mishaps. The owner walking around singing opera is cute although he is not the adorable, friendly person other reviewers say he is, he is quite messy looking and only nice to the regulars. What can I say? It was really good Italian food. Nice atmosphere, a little cheezy but quaint. Nice, attentive / knowledgeable service. The owner sings. He's cute. We ordered: Grilled octopus puglese 4 cheese gnocchi Orecchiette con broccoli Tartufo dessert The octopus was good but not as memorable as the other dishes. The waiter suggested another octopus dish that was not on the menu, which I wanted instead, but I was vetoed on that decision by my dining partner. All the same, it was some of the biggest hunks of tender octopus I've ever seen. I have to go back and try the other octo dish. The gnocchi was obscene. So rich and yummy, and, as another said, "melt in your mouth". Order this to share because it's really rich. This comes as a four cheese with Alfredo (which we had) or as Sorrentina (red sauce). The Orecchiette came with broccoli rape, olive oil and garlic. Simple. Amazing. The tartufo was good but I've had better. Our server suggested the cheesecake but I hate cheesecake -- so it might be great for you cheesecake lovers. Coffee was good but would have been great if they served it with at least light cream instead of milk. Milk ruins coffee, IMO. The house wines (chianti, pinot grigio) are good. Here is my story...Coming from Long Island I had a reservation at 7:30pm. Due to the holiday there was a lot of traffic and I was running a little late. I called at 7:25 pm and spoke to the owner. I told him I would be there at 7:45pm and if it was a problem to let me know because I would make a reservation at a different place. The owner said "No problem we will see you when you get here". I showed up at 7:45pm like discussed and he told me "we passed you on the reservation and it will be an hour wait". I reminded him that I spoke to him 20 minutes ago and he told me "be on time and find a place that suits your personality". I could not believe I was spoken to like this! The New York Times ranked Tomasso's the best Italian restaurant in NYC (so, by extension, the nation and possibly the world) for years upon years through the term of (3) or (4) different food critics. Then the era of the TV celebrity chef was ushered in and average chefs like Mario Batali suddenly became the darlings of groupies, um, I mean, "foodies" What a sad, silly world we live in. Anyway, Tommy is getting a little older and he doesn't cook as much but when does, he's still the best Italian chef in the world. Don't believe me? Look it up. Look at the photos of the food and then read some of the "reviews" from people who think entertainment is coming to our neighborhood to look at the Xmas lights on private houses. UPDATE: I went here again last night for some good Italian dinner and that is exactly what I got. We shared the four cheese Gnocchi, which is homemade, soft....melt in your mouth, but its in an Alfredo sauce and I personally prefer red tomato sauce, but it was amazing otherwise. We then shared the braised lamb shank in a brown sauce with homemade papperdelle pasta. It was amazing...fill of flavor and the meat melted in your mouth and fell right off the bone. The pasta was a nice accompaniment and it was a perfect meal. 08/18/07 This Italian restaurant in Bath Beach Brooklyn has been around for over 25 years and I have to say its a very good restaurant in the area. I have been here twice, once with my family for my birthday and then I sponsored a doctor for their holiday party. Both times the food was very good as well as the wine. I would recommend the Sunday special which is their homemade sauce that is thick and tasty with meatballs and sausage. The meatballs are better than the sausage, but this dish tastes like grandma used to make. The other good dishes is the Pappardelle al sugo di Coniglio, which is pasta with a rabbit ragu. The Ossobuco was another excellent dish. The prices are average, they even offer a prix fixed menu which gives appetizers, entree and dessert. When I came for the holiday party, this was a feast. They keep coming out with appetizers, cold seafood antipasto, fried calamari, stuffed mushrooms, etc. All very good, for dinner I had the veal dish, which from what I remember very good. This restaurant is known for their huge array of different wines. I remember having a glass of Merlot, which was by far the best Merlot I have ever had and then I tried the house Chianti. Good, but no where near the Merlot quality. Ok so your in Bath Beach and you feel like more traditional Italian food and some good wine. Come to Tommaso's, the food is good, the drinks are fantastic and the prices "med's a meds". Addendum: Went here again tonight for dinner and I have to say hands down the food is awesome! The red wine we were recommended by Mr. Tommaso himself was off the hook and a real bargain at 32.00 for a bottle. I had the Sunday special which is grandma's special sauce with the moist, melt in your mouth meatballs and meat sauce over perfectly cooked rigatoni. My dining companion had the lamb chops which were so good. Roasted garlic accompanied the chops and they were so good with the wine. Tommaso restaurant is a bath beach staple of great Italian food! The quality of the food is amazing an the service just as wonderful. They have entertainers on the weekends who sing and showcase their talents. The owners and chefs always ask how everything is and are always willing to make things better. Best Italian New York? Fuggedahboudit! This is competent Calabrian food at best, in a surrounding that would make any two-bit mobster happy. The deep fried rice balls are great, veal and lamb properly prepared and the marinara is what a Sicilian mother would like. Although most other Italian restaurants in the world do something a little more modern and sophisticated. Oh well. Good food, legendary for being a mobster hangout back in the day (and maybe still) but the rest of the world has moved on a bit. read more

My parents have been coming here since they were dating, and my fiance and I came for the first time a few months ago. The food was amazing and we've been back many times, including during Mardi Gras when they had a giant, special dinner menu. My bridal shower was held here over the weekend and the food was incredible (guests are still texting me about it) and the service was amazing. This restaurant went to new heights of amazing Italian cuisine when it served a prefix "Carnivale" menu on March 4th. Everything they brought out like polenta, riceballs, roasted vegetables, ribs was amazing and that was all before the pasta and main course. Will be making up an excuse to go back soon. read more

I'm going 5 stars on this one because we did a plated dinner for 25 people and everything was excellent. The appetizers were all great. Calamari, clams, etc... So good! The pasta was very delicious. Cooked to perfection with a tasty red sauce. All of the cocktails I ordered were very good too. Service was on point and we even had a husband/wife combo sing a few songs for us! read more
