Yelp Elite put this on, and what a great job Matt and the team did. Astro Coffee was there caffeinating us, phenomenal coffee/drinks. All-in-all not only is REI one of my favorite places to go and just walk around and look at all of the gear, clothing etc but the classes they do are really well done. I want to get more involved with these and any guided adventures they setup.

Wilderness Exchange is across the street from the flagship REI megastore. Park in the large lot (first hour free) next to Wilderness Exchange. We always enjoy hunting for bargains but it was not fun going through the mostly meh merchandise here. Hiking wear was still expensive even with tags showing markdowns of 25-50% off. We found the choices for women's clothing limited and less appealing (ugly colors and zero style) than the men's clothing. Plus secondhand clothing was mixed in with unworn merchandise. As for camping and hiking gear, it's hit or miss. Gear is expensive here even if it is marked down. If you are a hiking or camping newbie, bring a friend who can advise you about brands, quality and prices plus do some comparison shopping at REI. Confirm Wilderness Exchange's limited return and warranty policy.

I don't get the chance to visit many 'mountaineering' shops anymore for one reason... I've got a…read moreton of very high quality gear that has lasted me for many years but when I need something, like a recent pair of SCARPA boots, I visit Bent Gate. For many of us climbers, we used to have similar shops from yesteryear, Holubar, Frostline, Boulder Mountaineer, the 'old school' REI and the vintage Neptune Mountaineering, these shops had high quality gear that lasted the test of time and wear. Nowadays, fashion rather than function seems to be the selection at 'outdoor' shops. Ok... there's Bent Gate that still carries higher quality gear for folks who like to 'get at it'. Sure, you get what you pay for but the stuff does what it's supposed to do albeit at a price point a little higher than average. However, if you ever needed gear that will not fail, buy the better stuff for in the long run, you'll not only come out ahead but it might save your life. Bent Gate is such a company that strives for selling better gear... period!

Feral carries a few multi-use items like sunglasses, hydration packs, and headlamps, but other than that, nothing else. The store also lacks in service. There were three young ladies working at the front of the store, chatting amongst themselves. Not one customer was greeted when (we) walked in and checking out felt like an inconvenience to the staff. Prices here on new gear is a bit on the higher side in comparison so it's worth it to shop around (online).
