My fiancee and I love this place! Tommy's Wok is by far the best Chinese food experience I've ever encountered. The place is small and cozy and almost always busy. If you call ahead you can save yourself having to wander around Carmel aimlessly. Try the sizzling rice soup, the broccoli beef and the cashew chicken. The food is good for the price and is probably the freshest Chinese food I've ever had. It's also in one of those cute little alleys in Carmel, so bonus points there! Why 3 stars? Number One: they were out of some of the dim sum dishes we wanted to order. Boo. Number 2: they brought my dish out a good 5 minutes before my date's. When they did bring out his meal, it had chicken in it instead of pork so we had to wait another 5-10 minutes for his food. By the time his plate came out, mine was cold. I understand that the service at Chinese restaurants is usually pretty poor, but I expect something to come off the bill or something to get added for free when that happens. Oh well. This place just won Best Lunch or Best Take-Out in Monterey County' Weekly's Best List. Their menu is simple and very reasonably priced for the area, but the food was surprisingly not that pleasing. The lunch plate came with noodles which were very shiny and shiny most likely indicates grease. Yes one should expect grease and salt when enjoying (American) Chinese food so yes, our dishes were the epitome of such. A good friend of ours who works around the corner has been telling us about this place for a while and we waited for a nice, sunny day to make it down there. Nice restaurant but a little tiny (so I wouldn't take our nephews or niece), looks like they have good business, and this would've been a good spot to showcase on Rachel Ray's $40 a Day when she was in Monterey. But I will not be returning for a lunch plate. We've committed to having a dim sum date and their dim sum menu looked pretty pleasing, so we'll be going back :) read more

Directions- Go into the Wells Fargo parking lot and it's in the alley nex to the ATM. It's odd, I know but all these great reviews can't be wrong. We ordered your typical Chinese American dishes, beef and broccoli, sweet n sour chicken, pot stickers and pork chow main. I have to say, they were all solid representations of these dishes. Seriously ah-mazing Chinese food! Usually, after eating Chinese food I feel a huge weight in my gut but after eating my take-out I felt okay! The food wasn't too greasy or heavy. I ordered the orange chicken - to DIE for! The outside of each piece of chicken was nice and crispy - yummmmmm! The lunch special was I believe around $9 and I got so much food. Not only a generous helping of the Orange Chicken but you also get chow mein and friend rice, egg roll and misou soup. The ladies who work here are so sweet - this place is tucked back into one of Carmel by the Sea's courtyards. If you're craving Chinese Food definitely stop here! read more

Tommy's Wok is the only Dim Sum option in Pacific Grove, Carmel, Monterey, Seaside or Marina, so I tried the place just because I LOVE dim sum and driving all the way to San Jose or San Francisco isn't always an option. And I was so thrilled to find that the food here is fantastic! If you like, dim sum, you gotta come. :) I grab dim sum options for lunch from here as often as possible. Authentic and delicious food makes this a popular place, so you may need to wait a short time for a table, but to go orders are welcome! The restaurant itself is small and a little off the beaten track even for Carmel, but you'll be glad you made the effort. The servers and kitchen staff work very hard to serve everyone, and given the space constraints, they do an amazing job! I highly recommend Tommy's. read more

Good dining in downtown Carmel! For those of you visiting for your first time it might be a little difficult to find. Technically it is on the corner of Ocean and Mission, but it is back a way from the road and hard to find. The easiest way for me to give directions is to actually have you go down San Carlos, between Ocean and Seventh, and find the Wells Fargo. Tommy's Wok is actually behind the Wells Fargo. The atmosphere is cozy, the wait staff is very friendly and overall the service was well into the "fantastic" category. The food was excellent, reasonably priced, and by far the best Chinese food in the Monterey area. We started with the crab puffs (best I've had anywhere) followed by the won ton soup (which every patron should get, it was that good) with the Pine-nut Chicken and Mu Shu Pork as our main courses, which was more than enough for two average-sized adults. Nothing was greasy or super-rich or anything, and people with sensitive bowels could probably eat either of those without the normal Chinese food ramifications. We did get there early (right around 6:00) and by the time we had finished our meal they were already super-busy. I would suggest calling ahead for a reservation or getting take-out. Their take-out menu says they deliver, but I don't know how far that extends to. Obviously I would not expect them to deliver all the way to my place in Pacific Grove, but one of these days I might try and see if they do :D read more

My wife and I ate there last night. Our decision was based on the high ratings on Yelp. We were not disappointed, and would return again, and again. We ordered the seaweed soup, hot and spicy fish, spicy chicken and vegetables and sauteed spinach with fennel. Each of the dishes was simply delicious. The coating of the lightly battered and fried fish was thin; the sauce was a yummy medium spicy, on par with sweet spicy sceshzwan (sp sorry) with tons of sweet-spicy-onion flavor. This was a dish easily shared by 3 people. The seaweed soup was very delicious. My first time with this, and we both loved it. It had chunks of chicken, small mushrooms, shrimp, tofu, onion, carrots and drizzled egg. It could have been spicy, but I'm sure they only spice it up upon request. The chicken was very tasty, with chunks of dark and white meat mixed in with a very flavorful sauce, lots of fresh veggies. This too was a good sized dish. The sauteed spinach was the best I've ever had. the fennel totally caught me by surprise, as it blends in perfectly with the dark spinach leaves. Everything tasted fresh, and there were bits of garlic throughout the dish. Service in the restaurant was friendly, and adequate. The table was clean and seating was adequate. Tables are a little close together, so don't plan on any privacy. The restroom is shared among other businesses in the alley area. The bathroom was very clean. Dinner for 2 with plenty of leftovers was under $50. Not too shabby! This place seems popular with locals, as several locals picked up "to go" packs while we dined. One note; this place can be a little tricky to find. It sits in the middle of a inconspicuous alley way off Mission. Yeah, it's Americanized but that's ok and their lunch plates are a good value. For $7-8 you get a combo plate with soup of the day. We got hot and sour soup which was very good. Our combo plates were Szechuan pork and shrimp with veggies. Each came with pork fried rice, chow mein and a few strips of fried wonton wrapper. Both plates were huge. I could have done with a little less soy sauce/salt, but for that price you can't complain too much. BTW, it is really difficult to find as it is tucked in an alley. I am from the San Gabriel Valley area in Los Angeles where it's Asian food heaven. That's why I was extremely surprised that Tommy's Wok has such yummy food in the Monterey area. The food here is very tasty and flavorful, even though it's a bit on the salty side. I ordered their combo that comes with a hot and sour soup. Their hot and sour soup is delicious. Stopped by for lunch with husband because of all the good reviews on Yelp. We needed a little change from all of the seafood and steak restaurants in Monterey/Carmel. I got the eggplant with spicy garlic sauce with added chicken and my husband got the Mongolian beef lunch plates. We both enjoyed our main dishes, though my spicy garlic sauce was a little too sweet for my liking. The meat was tender and my eggplant had a delightful crispiness to it that was unexpected, but yummy. I did not enjoy the hot & sour soup (too salty), noodles (too mushy), or their fried rice (too bland). Overall, the food was just okay. If we had ordered our main dishes a la carte, I would give this place 4 stars. But it was such a waste that we didn't enjoy the rest of the dishes that came along with the lunch special. Again, I'm always pretty happy with Tommy's Wok. We went there before a play and were out in plenty of time to walk to the theater. We ordered the Empress Calamari, Moo Shoo Chicken, and Hot & Spicy Green Beans. The service there is always attentive here. We missed the rush crowd. The restaurant was warm though because it was a sunny day outside and there wasn't enough airflow. The food arrived promptly but in courses. The Moo Shoo was yummy. It had a good balance of chicken and chopped vegetables. Each one balanced the others. We didn't like the fact that they were using tortillas instead of the typical wrappers. Normally, I think they make them---but whatever. The Empress Calamari was a sweet and spicy sauce over fried calamari and water chestnuts. The heat was not overwhelming to the sweetness and the water chestnuts helped to even out the flavors. The flavor of the calamari also came through, mostly because the coating was not too thick and allowed for the flavor to combine well with the sauce. We really liked the hot & spicy green beans. The garlic and ginger were well-proportioned and infused the green beans. The next day, as leftovers, they were even better. First off the place is very small. But they re the best Chinese place in the monterey bay area hands down. since the place is small the food comes straight out of the kitchen so it is nice and hot. Yummy yummy yummy good Chinese in my tummy! We had a hankering for some MSG during a weekend stay in Carmel. Even at 5:30 on a Sunday they were moderately busy, with both locals and visitors, a good sign. The waitress we had was a little on the hopeless side and the seating is kind of awkward, but the food was pretty good. Instead of the usual meat and one-or-two-veg, my beef with black bean sauce was made with decent quality meat (not that mystery-meat which is sometimes fun, but not when you're on vacation if you get my drift) and a multitude of pretty fresh tasting vegetables. Hubby's Mongolian lamb was good, but he was pretty into the beef dish. The hot and sour soup was also a winner. I'm usually not a fan of the gluggy texture, but they packed in the veges including jicama and even some chicken. The hot came from a lot of pepper, which was a bit rough on the throat, but it was still good. We'd definitely go back here, it was moderately priced for Carmel, quick (but definitely not polished) service and most importantly, the food was good. The quality is the best, the owner uses to own a famous Chinese restaurant in San Fran and settled here for a slower pace. Their lunch is the best deal, you get soup and a meal for around $10. Let's talk about the eggplant-it's cubed, fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside and the sauce is fantastic. Really, it's all about the sauces. And the sizzling rice soup. Service has always been great. My only complaint is that I like to order 3 or 4 different flavors (soup / vegetables / prawns / etc.) and for two people, this is just too much food. Over the three trips, my boyfriend and I tried the following: Appetizers: Pork Pot Stickers (good, but I've had better) Chicken Wontons (delicious, but it's mostly bread with an itty bitty piece of chicken in the middle) Fried Prawns (AMAZING! If want to order an appetizer, get this one) Soups: Wonton Soup (I personally only liked the broth and not all the stuff in it, but my boyfriend loved it and ordered it every time we went. I'm not much of a soup person though.) Main Dish: Szechuan Chicken (delicious! The menu says it's spicy, but I didn't find it to be too hot) Sweet and Sour Chicken (wonderful!) Orange Chicken (my favorite! Again, the menu says spicy, but it's not. Has a nice crispiness to it that I loved.) Go to the front door to be seated. We usually get carry out, but when I was 9 months pregnant we went in to eat. They made me go wait out front where there was no place to sit. Then sat 2 tables of people before us, while I stood as big as a whale on my two swollen feet. There is a table out back that I wanted to sit at while we waited, but they would not allow it. My family and I ate there last night. It was very hard to find using my iphone map ap. It is actually located between two buildings. You can find it by pulling into the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot. We actually came in the back door (because we couldn't find the front). I got a little worried when I saw we were entering through the kitchen hallway, but I needn't worry... The food was awesome!
