I have been dining in at TapAsia for years. For the first time, I decided to order takeout. I called ahead. I've never had Tonkotsu Ramen but it looked good on the menu. Egg noodles with pork bellies and broth along with an egg and veggies. How could I go wrong? Chef-owner Natalie always makes her restaurant meals delicious and visually appealing. I just didn't expect my takeout meal to look so amazing! What's more, it tasted every bit as great as it looked. The broth for the meal was placed into separate container to keep the noodles from getting too overcooked. My little dogs hovered nearby and waited hopefully for a taste as I dished out the food. I live in Vermont. I own/operate/am the only cook at a small, independent Diner (breakfast only at the moment). I get two days off a week and I pack up and DRIVE somewhere for a mini vacay. Albany is one of my preferred spots. The Lark Street neighborhood in particular in Albany is just a great place. TapAsia has been on my list of places to try. I curate my own restaurant "collections" in Yelp for every place I go. I am ALWAYS on the lookout for somewhere new to try/fall in love with/become a regular at. TapAsia has been on my Albany list for months now. But three separate times I got to Lark St and then sidetracked into a different restaurant. Not this time! This time I made it to TapAsia and then gave myself a little "talking to" about why I'd waited so long!! FANTASTIC spot. The food is, honestly, just entire levels above Thai/Asian inspired Tapas I've had other places (including just up the block on Lark...). And I'm an AVID eater of Asian in inspired small plates. Not fancy. Not large. There are a couple tables outside, but the actual dining room/bar is below street level. Cool, intimate, well lit basement vibes. Also, clearly a neighborhood spot where people know each other and talk to each other. Another thing I really like. Gotta have good food AND good vibes and a neighborhood spot, a small, independent restaurant?? THAT is The Gold Standard my friends. And TapAsia is ALL that. I started out with fresh, summer rolls and added shrimp. These were, hands down, the best fresh summer rolls I've ever had (and I order summer rolls whenever I see them on a menu). These are chock full of perfectly, finely chopped, fresh ingredients, rolled tightly and served in a beautiful, already cut plating with housemade dipping sauce. Speaking of which! TapAsia makes all their sauces in house and it shows. Your sauces will make or break your dishes, ESPECIALLY in a cuisine that has a lot of sauces...like Thai... The dipping sauce served with the fresh summer rolls was so good I would not let my waiter take it away, because the Avocado Mango Egg Rolls were FANTASTIC when dragged through the summer roll sauce! Also, yes, I said Avocado Mango Egg Rolls. FABULOUS. They are exactly what the name implies: egg roll wrappers filled with perfectly ripe, diced avocado and mango and then deep fried. So you get all the wonderful experience of a hot, fried egg roll and none of the meat (I don't eat beef, pork or poultry). These are not marked Vegan on the menu, but there are plenty of Vegan options here. I also ordered their Spicy Garlic Edamame as my third starter. My waiter asked me what heat level I wanted: Mild, Medium, Hot or Thai Hot. Me: "NOT THAI HOT! NEVER THAI HOT! I'll take regular Hot." As in: "DO I LOOK SUICIDAL RIGHT NOW??" Let's be clear. I eat spicy. I eat A LOT of spicy in multiple cuisines. But I KNOW I cannot tolerate Thai spicy. Thai chefs did NOT come to play and whatever it is they use to dial that heat up is, frankly, DEADLY. Meanwhile, I had no problem with Hot Spicy Garlic Edamame. Which, clearly, lulled me into a false sense of security. And so I ordered the Som Tum (Papaya Salad) and I overlooked (??) the "spicy" icon next to it on the menu. Can. I. Just. Say. I was almost killed. By a salad. That damn salad was the kind of spicy that makes you MAD because it is HURTING you. But also? It was beautiful and delicious and I REALLY WANTED to eat it and kept eating more and then taking mouthfuls of water to sooth my mouth until I, eventually, ran out of water and had to stop eating the salad ad order a side of rice to attempt to recover... I'm not saying don't order the Papaya Salad. I AM saying request it "mild" unless you are a trained professional in the arena of Thai heat! And then I ordered my entree. Entrees are broken out into sections depending on which housemade sauce is the base. You choose your sauce base and then you can kind of "build" your entree by choosing one (or more than one) protein to add. There are a variety of Vegan choices! I ordered Pad Kra Prow (Thai Basil Sauce) with sautéed string beans, bamboo shoot and basil in chili and garlic sauce and then I added fried chunks of white fish (WHICH WERE AMAZING!!!). I told my waiter that I had almost DIED attempting to eat the Salad and requested that the Pad Kra Prow be "Medium" heat ( it is listed as "Spicy" on the menu...). My waiter looked at me...for a beat...and said, "How about mild??" Me: "Okay. Mild!" Look, I am not afraid to declare DEFEAT in The Spice Wars. The Pad Draw Prow was DELICIOUS. So incredibly flavorful and full of fresh, wonderful ingredients and I could taste the ENTIRE favor profile because my mouth wasn't actually on fire. Next time it's going to be MILD for me...across the board. But there WILL be a next time. Because every thing I ate at TapAsia was simply perfect. read more

I walked by the restaurant and heard good things about it so I wanted to check it out. I wasn't that hungry so I got the coconut soup and Aji tuna and it was really good. Well, color me impressed. Thanks to Steve N. for encouraging me to come to TapAsia on the strength of its hot and spicy Thai dishes. I had been avoiding this place because I had a hard time buying into the concept of Pan-Asian "tapas". There is good reason to be skeptical of Pan Asian restaurants. Different cuisines require different styles of cooking and different staple ingredients. The Chinese, Japanese, and Korean inspired dishes were the least impressive of the bunch. Thai food at Tap Asia rules the roost. And the kitchen isn't timid about bringing the heat. Our table ordered a mildly spiced green curry, a medium spiced beef salad, and a fully hot stir fried string beans. I was legitimately scared to try the hot, as I had been warned from multiple people about just how hot it would be. Yes. Indeed, it was very hot. But it was also flavorful, and intensely enjoyable. The trick is to just eat it slowly, be careful about how it hits the back of your throat, and have some creamy and soothing green curry on hand to quench the flames. But I would not shy away from ordering more dishes at the hot spice level in the future. It is a rare treat to really get something so assertively seasoned. The beer selection was also good, and I was delighted to see cans of Westbrook Brewing's White Thai on the menu. Just make sure to save room for dessert, because the hot Thai donuts, drizzled with sweetened condensed milk and chocolate syrup should not be missed. An order is pretty large, and should probably be split by four adults. As a place with "tapas" in the name, it would be nice if they had more items served in small portions, but so it goes. TapAsia is particular great for those people who love Thai food, but have somehow fallen into a social circle of people who don't share the same enthusiasm for the cuisine. Of course, they may not love the experience as much as you do. But then, you'll end with donuts, and close out the meal on a high note. read more

I decided to go into the restaurant to try the fare as I had previously ordered through GrubHub. The Thai iced tea was delicious, as per the norm. I got the tuna tartare again which was amazing! They use a wasabi in the marinade. I would have liked a little more avocado. Just an FYI: This appetizer is pretty expensive $13. I've paid $8 for this elsewhere and received twice the size in a serving and it was just as high quality. I then order the ramen after seeing a pic of it on Yelp. The poster neglected to identify that they had ordered the spicy version. I saw the color and assumed it was a red curry ramen and never read the menu description. This dish had so much promise. Between the taste and the smell, it reminded me of the public restroom in New York Penn Station. I took two bites and it was over for me. I was beyond repulsed by the fact that all of my senses screamed that I was eating from the toilet. I was embarrassed to say anything so I had them pack it to go and then threw it in the trash on the street. Horrible. It was absolutely the worst thing I've ever had in my mouth. Been back a couple of times, and tried various dishes. Also added some pictures. Hope you enjoy them. One thing I want to emphasize with this place, is the eclectic mix of Thai and Japanese. I personally feel the Thai is much better, but I am a little biased, having been all over Japan and visited more than 100 times, and ate at some really authentic places. That being said, as I mentioned before, I was excited to see their Kara-age chicken, and did enjoy it, but was disappointed only because it is not as good as some of the izakaya places in Japan. The same would go for the Tonkatsu Ramen. I've had better, but this was still very good. I could tell the noodles were not hand made, as they are in great ramen establishments, but it was still very tasty, and the spice was "HOT" just how I like it. The curry is fantastic, and if you ask for Thai Spicy, you better be ready, because they give you Thai Spicy. My wife enjoys their green curry, and the owner is so nice to accommodate and add salmon to the dish, with extra price. I recommend you try that, but be prepared if you try it Thai Spicy. Loved my experience here last night. We went with a friend that lives just down the street and is a regular customer. The service was fantastic, friendly and fun. The atmosphere is lovely; I had been to the restaurant that was previously in this space and they did some terrific upgrades. The menu has a bunch of Thai dishes, but there are other Asian-cuisine influences all over the menu. Many of the appetizers are fried, but we indulged in a few of those since we were celebrating a birthday. There's also a lovely sake selection and we shared a bottle of delicious, cold, smooth and slightly sweet unfiltered sake. We ordered a ton of food and shared everything: -Steamed Bun!! This one had spicy tuna and avocado: very different. I LOVE me a good steamed bun and this was an interesting twist...stuffing that doughy, warm, delightful bun with raw tuna, avocado, masago and spicy mayo...yessssss. Totally worked for me. Winner, winner...steamed bun dinner...perhaps! There are several other steamed buns to choose from...I look forward to going back and checking out some of the other varieties. -Potstickers/Gyoza - these were delicious, albeit deep fried, served with a sweet, sticky soy-based dip. I generally prefer them steamed, but they were rather tasty. -Beef Salad - delicious! We were warned that "regular" spice is "hot"...so we ordered "mild". I like super spicy, so next time I'll order hot...which means really freakin' hot. (I got some extra hot paste for the side). -Avocado Mango Egg Roll- this is also deep fried...but very yummy. I expected smaller, bite-sized egg rolls...but no...it's one big fried wonton with a pile of avocado, mango and other saucy goodness inside. Hard to share because it got very messy VERY quickly...but we managed. -Vietnamese Spring Roll (with shrimp) - very generous portions of rice paper wrapping filled with crisp, fresh veggies and a slice of shrimp on the edge of each piece. Delicious sauces on the plate to accompany the cool, crisp and refreshing rolls. -Tom Yum fried rice - apparently this is a family recipe. And it's worth trying. Delicious! -Drunken Noodle - I loved their version of this dish....perfectly cooked, soft broad noodles with generous pieces of chicken. By the time we ordered the rice and noodles, I was already pretty stuffed. I REALLY wanted to keep eating...but then they brought the pile of Thai donuts (drizzled with chocolate and white sauces). We actually walked in this restaurant last weekend but it was steaming hot inside so we left and went to Rain. However I'm in a search for Outstanding Thai food so had to try this spot but unfortunately it's another place that is just okay. I called ahead to get the lunch special and with just few minutes to the end time frame the lady hesitantly let me get it. I didn't know it was bento box style since, which made the curry portion much smaller. There was a house salad , miso soup, small portion of rice, and 2 gyoza fried dumplings for $10. The curry was too watery and filled with bamboo shoots, peppers, chicken and had a nice spice which I can usually can stand with Thai iced tea, but they ran out. I did ask for mild and they said it's going be spicey but I think they could've added some coconut milk to even it out and thicken it. And the amount of Bonito was shocking. I know I asked for extra, but come on! The Miso soup was almost clear, with no flavor and no seaweed. Oh my lord. *fans* I'm usually quite the spicy eater. It's difficult to get me to feel the heat when I try Asian dishes most of the time (though I do get the visceral rhinorrhea and flushing without the subjective sensation of my taste buds incinerating in the joys of hellfire). This was a wonderful surprise when I ordered their green and red curry with maximum heat. The lady was actually pretty concerned for me since she said she makes her own spices. Boom. I was sold. If they make their own spicy sauce, it's definitely authentic. LOVE the spiciness. It has such a good kick to it. The only downside is that the flavor isn't as strong as it could be in the curries, but maybe it's just overmasked by the powerful heat punch it packs. Great lunch spot with tons of affordable and delicious specials. I ordered the bento box of red curry chicken, which came with salad, soup, rice and two small fried pork dumplings. The mild version of the red curry was still quite hot, so if you don't like heat I would recommend telling your server. The red curry chicken was so rich and was full of vegetables and slices of ginger. The bento box was $9 -- such a good deal for the variety of food that comes with it. As huge curry fans we definitely had to try out this restaurant while driving through Albany. The pictures and reviews on Yelp looked promising. The restaurant is pretty small but cozy, and we were greeted by nice and friendly employee. The menu was pretty small but we knew what we wanted so it was pretty easy for us. We ordered Vietnamese Fresh Rolls that were really good although I wish they came with peanut sauce. However their sauce was pretty good. Massaman Curry was good enough (3/5) - little bit sweet and flavourful. I liked the presentation of this dish - with burning cinnamon stick. Interesting! I did not like that it had lots of half cooked potatoes in it (I forgot to order without potatoes because I have noticed that many Thai restaurants add almost rock hard potatoes in their Massaman Curry. I guess it's a thing). My disappointment goes to Red Curry. Usually it's my favourite dish in a Thai restaurant - I always choose this dish no matter where I go. Here it was not even close to what I'm used to - it was very liquid-y (like a juice almost) and very sweet, also the spices were missing. It basically tasted like sugar, coconut milk, water and chilli (I ordered mild and it was very spicy). Also the veggies inside were too soft, over boiled. I think it was missing lemongrass, some tart flavour, something. I added lime but it couldn't save the dish. I mentioned this to the waitress who assumed I don't know how Thai Curry should taste but it's definitely not the case here. Wait, I haven't reviewed TapAsia yet? Bizarre. This is a go-to spot for me when it's cold or rainy out: a giant bowl of noodle soup next to the gas fire in this cozy little restaurant is a perfect way to take the chill off. I can't swear to this, but TapAsia is one of the only local Thai places that tastes to me like the curry is house-made instead of a commercial paste (nothing against those pastes, but they're easy to buy and cook with at home!): each of the different curries is distinct and very flavorful. I also like that I can get food here that's hot enough to make me rethink my decision-making. My husband and I often each order either the Tom yum seafood noodle soup or the duck khao soi; both are kind of untraditional spins on classics, and both are delicious (the Tom yum seafood noodle is the closest thing I've found around here to satisfy a laksa craving, though I'm still longing for a Malaysian restaurant in this area!). The non-Thai options tend to strike me as a bit less impressive/more like something that I would rather get elsewhere (though I do like that vegan ramen), but sticking with the Thai/Thai fusion stuff almost always results in a really tasty meal. read more

Ordered delivery through Grubhub. The food was good, nothing to write home about but enjoyable. My only real complaint was that the servings were not worth the money in my opinion. Ordered tonkotsu ramen, spring rolls, and a veggie stir fry. The stir fry just wasn't enough food or anything culinarily extravagant to warrant the $13 it costs, adding the spring rolls was the only thing that made it enough food for my GF. The Ramen was a good portion except for the actual pork, only two slices. This place is great - authentic and interesting flavors, a diverse menu, and friendly service. I have been quite a few times lately and ordered different items (soups, noodle dishes, curries, appetizers) and they have all been fantastic. I particularly love the tom yum soup, which has the perfectly blend of sweetness and tartness with a bit of spice. I also really enjoyed the beef pho on a recent visit. It wasn't completely traditional - there was some sort of sweet spice in the broth that I couldn't quite place - but it was great. They also served it with a really nice portion of tender beef chunks and noodles in the soup, instead of over-relying on broth like some places do. For appetizers/tapas, the chicken satay is simple but well executed, with a charred grill and a nice thick peanut sauce for dipping. For entrees, I've found that the Thai dishes are the best, as well as anything with some spice. And you should be forewarned, TapAsia does not play around with the heat level. Even just the medium is a lot for me, and I'm someone that enjoys a good amount of spice with my food. I am a HUGE fan of tapas...it's one of the first get to know you meals I got with my future wife and we just like to go and order the whole menu, sit for hours, drink sake or sangria and whatever is available and just have a jolly'o time. We drive by lark all the time and think to ourselves that we need to get in there and get some delicious food since it's rated so well. Now to be fair I'm pretty critical of food but still fair. Now my review for this place with 2 stars is tough and I have to say that's there just because the service was stellar. I was NOT a fan of the food. There are several reason for that and I'm going to try and list them all. Firstly the name of the place is TapAsia and the menu didn't quite have a big list of tapas that I was hoping. Secondly in the limited menu the best thing I saw was the octopus which I was excited to try and just so happened that they didn't even have the marinade for it which I was told after being asked other questions regarding how spicy and all. With my experience make it and make it well and that's just standard but they just came out and said they couldn't make it. Secondly the place is a conceptual disaster when it comes to some of the menu items. They are oversized, hard to eat and just not well made. Let me elaborate. We got the spicy tuna steamed bun, I have to say the tuna was good but I didn't understand why it needed to be in the giant bun which is hard to eat so just put it in smaller buns like normal size and it would make for good eats. They also HIGHLY recommended mango avocado spring roll....mango yummm avocado yummy..so what can go wrong I thought?...A LOT for that dish, it was stuffed in what looked like a massive wonton and deep fried but it's back to concepts right. Anytime you leave something frying that long to cook it, it's going to take a while, going to soak in the oil and just give you an odd after taste, it's only natural it would. Tasted awful to say the least, but the filling which are supposed to be two ORGASM creating ingredients need to have flavor. You can just mix them in with some fried onion bits is not enough. Make them shine with some awesome seasoning. Like I said CONCEPT issues. We ordered other things like Wasabi Shumai, which was the only thing I liked and the reason was as soon as you bite into it, you taste wasabi. And it was a true representation of the menu item. We also got crab Rangoon's, which didn't stand out...average, chicken Satay which was okay, and had an odd aftertaste if eaten without the peanut sauce which was okay as well. Overall, I left not satisfied and somewhat depressed and I resolved that with walking down to Bombers down the street and buying some food there to satisfy me after paying close to spending $80 bucks on dinner. Surprisingly charming for dine in. Always top notch for takeout, but the dine in presentation is a wow!

I came here on New Year's Eve with my mother who recently moved to the area. We walked by it a few times while learning the area and it smelled good and looked so cute. I was not disappointed! Which makes me super happy. The tapas menu was decent and they have many options to choose from which is great, my mother is sort of picky but likes to try new things. We got the takoyaki, gyoza, and the soft shell crab steam bun. All of these were fresh, hot, crispy and delicious. Every thing cooked properly and on time which I appreciate always, being a chef myself. For noodles we got the drunken noodles and soba, the soba was the only point where I had a couple minor critiques, the veg was rather clunky and it could go without the mushrooms and whole okra. That's it. The drunken noodles were spicy and the steak was cooked perfectly. No chew. Just tender beef. But honesty the showstopper was the Thai donuts with sweet milk and chocolate drizzles. Holy shit, these should be illegal. They give five whole donuts!! Not little donut balls, whole ring sized donuts. Anyways, try it out, we had a lot of fun. read more

My husband and I had dinner at Tapasia on 3/11/17. I was hoping for a more unique experience ordering Asian tapas, but I had anticipated more varied/unique "tapas" on the menu. Our food was quite delicious and some of the ingredients were interesting, but overall I expected more. We ordered the mango avocado eggroll and the shrimp spring rolls to share. The mango avocado egg roll looked like one giant empanada or crab Rangoon. It wasn't really made for sharing, but we split it in half. All of the mangos and avocado fell out (see photo). That said it was very tasting albeit lacking a little kick in the sauce which I was expecting. The spring rolls were tasty but not what I really consider spring rolls. Pretty much just loosely wrapped lettuce with half a piece of shrimp. The sauce to dip in was delicious. I have had some really good spring rolls, so the wrapping and having to cut with a fork and knife was a bit disappointing for me. We each ordered curry with veggies and chicken. I got the green which was good but not great. I expect a certain coconutty-sweetness in my spicy curry and this lacked the sweetness before the kick. It was still very good, but would've been better with a bit of sugar. The red curry, however, had the sweetness of the coconut followed by the spicy kick which I've come to love. Excellent. I ordered a glass of Pinot Grigio and my husband tried the ginger lemongrass wit-style beer. I'd say go for the beer as the wine is run of the mill. The wait staff was very friendly and welcoming but that and the atmosphere are the two best things I can say about our experience there. We went as a group of six for someone's birthday and half of us weren't happy with our food. While the prices and proportions were fair, they asked for the spice level of three dishes and two were ordered as mild and one was medium. The spice chart they use must be ridiculous as even the mildly spiced dishes made our lips feel as if they were on fire and we didn't eat them/couldn't finish them. Additionally, I ordered the tuna blah blah salad as it was listed online... The actual paper menu called it the tuna salad, so I ordered it as such in an attempt to not confused our waiter. He definitely brought out the ahi tuna appetizer instead and then when I said I had ordered the tuna salad he said "oh you meant the blah blah!". It took so long for him to come out with my salad after the confusion was cleared up and everyone else had already had their food awhile ago, I'm not sure why the salad too the longest to come out to begin with. The salad sounded delicious with seared tuna, mango, avocado and seaweed salad in top of mixed greens and I was quite looking forward to it. Sadly though, the mango and avocado were both underripe and the sesame seeds on the seared tuna were burned. read more

I've lived in Albany basically my entire life and just came here for the first time, not sure why! My boyfriend and I walked in just before 7 on a Saturday night and we were seated immediately. There were only two servers and most of the tables (both inside and out) were full but our service was great. We got gyoza, crab Rangoon, and two pad thais, everything was tasty and came out hot and fast. I will say I ordered my pad Thai hot and definitely would get medium instead next time- the heat was legit. Also the restaurant itself was so cute and cozy. Definitely will be returning! read more

Tapasia is one of my go-tos for lunch in the neighbored. They make the only decent pad see ew in town, as far as I'm concerned, and the gyoza are deep fried (what's not to like?) They do a sort of bento style lunch box that is a good value, and their walkability and willingness to deliver give them major convenience points. Be forewarned: their spice scale is off kilter. Medium is HOT. Mild is... pretty hot. As a result I stick with the non-spicy items. read more

I ordered via Grubhub. Do not, I repeat do not order from this restaurant through Grubhub. I'm starting to realize how Grubhub works (not a great delivery service!). I don't blame the restaurant for cold food that took an hour to deliver after it was ready and that was spilled in all of the bags. We've ordered from them before. The food is good WHEN IT IS HOT. This time the food was cold and the soup spilled and we had a bag of soup. Sauces from the lunches were all over the containers. The food looked like it had a very hard time getting here. Negotiating a refund, or at least a partial refund. $141 for cold food is a bit unacceptable and the condition it was in was comical. It was actually ridiculous.
