It's a very small place relatively close to the Domain (not in it), but pretty far north from Downtown. However this is probably one of the best Sushi places in Austin. It's authentic, incredibly creative and delicious. I was able to find combinations of flavors I've never tasted before. Presentation is usually strong at most Japanese restaurants, but Tomodachi is taking it to a whole new level. There are several dishes which come with a true performance of food, ice and fire on your plate. If you seat at the bar you can watch the staff working on their creations which I find pretty hypnotizing. The downside is a high chance of wait (Fridays and Saturdays it gets busy and it's small, so the line is not moving fast). It's also on a pricey side, but not overwhelming for Austin. I recommend this places for local sushi lovers, who enjoy discovering a hidden gem off the beaten path. read more

This is your "diamond in the rough" sushi spot as located in small strip center on Palmer just off Mo-pac. Last evening we sat at the bar & had the Halibut sashimi and special Zombie Roll - both were excellent. Numerous other special roll offerings - with many possessing sexual connotations - along with a great Saki menu. In addition, one of the best and attentive wait staffs anywhere in Austin. This place is small and quaint, perfect for date night/not for a party of more than 4. This best sushi value in Central Texas...after visiting, you will be hard pressed to justify Uchi/Uchiko again. read more

My husband and I were given a 20 min wait time and responded to the hostess's question that we'd like first available. Another group came in with 3 people and were seated immediately. Upon inquiring if they had a reservation, we were told that we'd have to wait for a two person table and only tables of 3 or 4 get a booth. So they HAD a table for us but didn't want to waste it on a two person table. A second group of 3 came in and was seated immediately. We had waited 15 mins at that point, and left. I'm so bummed that Tomo chooses to treat customers so poorly. There are too many amazing restaurants in Austin to support such a self-serving establishment. If you are going there as a couple, maybe grab someone in the parking lot to join you if you want to be treated like you matter. :( read more

Hands down my favorite sushi spot in Austin! The sushi bombs are a must have. My boyfriend likes the atomic version if you want to kick it up another notch! My best friend who doesn't eat sushi even loves coming with me. She gets the hot rock. The staff is always friendly and fast. We even had the power go out during a storm one time, and they handled everything so well. Eventually the power did come back on, and our dinner was amazing as always. Can't recommend this spot enough. Oh - it's a small spot! (But that is part of the charm.) Fair warning - Be sure to get there early or plan for a bit or a wait. It's well worth it :) read more

Tomodachi is my new spot for the highest quality and preparation of sushi in Austin. I'm not talking rolls or any crazy new creations but tried and true sashimi and nigiri sushi prepared and handled expertly and uniquely for each type of ingredient. We started with the Nobu New Style Sashimi for an appetizer - a great starting course to get your palate excited and ready for the main course! Our sushi comprised of our own 'omakase-style' sequence consisting of: Aji (Horse Mackerel) Tai (Red Snapper) Hamachi (Yellowtail) Kampachi (Amberjack) Shiro Maguro (Albacore) Bincho Maguro (Escolar) Toro (Fatty Tuna) Sake Toro (Fatty Salmon) Uni (Sea Urchin) Sounds like a lot, but splitting 9 orders between two is a relatively comfortable amount of sushi for a dinner! Again, each fish was treated perfectly with a sauce or accompaniment that highlighted it. Every bite was excellent! read more

Tomo is my favorite, consistent sushi restaurant. There are bigger places that can handle lunch rushes better but Tomo's food is some of the best. Delicious spicy edamame and miso soup. My favorite roll is the Crazy Ex-Boyfriend. I could stuff myself on it. It tastes very rich but isn't overly stuffed and difficult to eat in one, complete piece. I need to go back soon read more

This place was ok but nothing to write home to. I'm from California and have been in search of a new sushi place...this is not it. The rolls were pretty boring and not crazy flavorful. I had high hopes from the other reviews but it really wasn't that good. The atmosphere also just feels like a cheap sushi place and not in a good way. This is probably the best sushi in North Austin period I love this place. The rolls are always amazing, and the staff is super nice. I wish the restaurant for a little bigger, because some times it's a huge lunch rush and it takes a while to get a seat. I also wish, especially during COVID-19, they could do a little bit better with their takeout. For example their menu on various ordering apps is not complete so you have to call in your order, which I don't mind, but sometimes you're on hold because of the busyness. I would rather do it online.But I love the food and I'm happy they're doing well during COVID-19. And I'll keep coming as long as I live in Austin read more

Food wise, nothing to complain about. It's excellent. However, something is either very wrong with their service, or my girlfriend and I just got very unlucky. We came into the small sushi shop at around 5 pm on a Saturday with about 5 total tables seated. The restaurant was 25% full. We ordered our food - chicken teriyaki and a Sonya roll with some tempuras on the side. The chicken teriyaki and the tempuras came out quickly and as expected. However, instead of the Sonya roll that we ordered, we got a Japanese Lasagna roll on our table instead. Understandably, these two orders can easily be mixed up and misheard (lasagna vs the Sonya). We quickly notified our waitress and the Sonya roll was taken away. ...Then we proceeded to wait 35-40 extra minutes after the lasagna roll was taken away to receive the Sonya roll. By that point, two parties had come and left at the table next to us. We didn't even get an apology for the wait when the Sonya roll came out, after we had complained about the wait too. This is a ridiculous experience for us as first timer here. Two stars solely for the quality of the food, zero star for the service. Extra edit: so we reflected our situation to the manager, wanting to give some feedback and get an apology. She came over and after listening to us to respond with only "want me to take if off?" And then she grabbed the check without any extra words. SURE, getting that taken off the check would be nice, but that was NOT what we were looking for. Come on, not even one apology?! Tomodachi Sushi was great. Not only was the sushi amazing, but the chefs were very interactive and the vibe was awesome. We went on Saturday night around 7:30 and had to wait for 45 minutes. The hostess said the wait would be 45 minutes and she was right on point. Also as soon as we put our name on the wait list they asked if they could get us a drink or anything while we waited. I'm in love. I'm crazy in love. Somewhere around this magical place, I fell in love. She took me here. And there we were (and have been), my legs brushed up against and slightly hugging the woman I would be crazy in love with ... so subtly and secretly under the table that probably no one ever noticed a thing. Lovely liciousness in all types of form are to be had here. Liciousness must be the way others would describe Tomodachi since 1/2 of Austin may or may not be in here all at once at any given time. It's guaranteed at least 1/4 of Austin will be in here no matter what. Unfortunately, Tomodachi will not take reservations unless you have at least 5 people in your party; it is also extremely loud at times (the reason for 4 and not 5 stars). Boo!!! Tomodachi's tomolicious atmosphere is sexy quaint and sexy intimate with low lighting and pretty, playful, sleek decor. Their friendly waitstaff somehow keeps you hooked up without even being noticed. Lots of understated over-the-top going on - it's there for the taking if you know how to find it. Thank Gawdess I did. P.S. It is probably imperative to mention this is the place that made me appreciate real, authentic sushi. Literally - this Tomolicious Tomodachi is where it all happened. So when I got a text asking if I've ever been to Tomo, I had to admit I've never heard of the place. In the same way salsa has supplanted ketchup as the leader of America's condiment world, I'm pretty sure froyo and sushi places have knocked off burger and BBQ joints from the top of Austin's culinary scene, since there's one on every block now. Well, that's the way the unagi bounces. I did read several Yelp reviews before I met my luncheon companion there, and my instinct was I would probably be the only person of Japanese ethnicity in the entire place when we arrived. And I was right. That's not a good or bad thing, it's just something I find mildly ironic about Austin's Japanese restaurants. At 12:30pm the place was packed, but we found two seats at the sushi counter. It occurs to me this review could be longer than it needs to be: Tomo is a stylish little place, with a quick and efficient staff, and the food is fun and colorful. My tonkatsu bento box was both pretty and good, which made it really pretty good. She got the pumpkin tempura, and the bite she shared was a surprise - tempura is all about a light and crispy batter for me, and Tomo does it right. I'm not going to bore you with my Zen of Sushi baggage, but I will tell you the concept of "sushi roll" always strikes me like CGI work in films: It's creative, it's fantastic, and it has little to do with reality. Our three sushi rolls - the DD, the Tempura #2, and the Steve's Special - were delightful to look at, and tasty, and crunchy, and I'm sure very hip and cool - but they just don't have anything to do with the world of sushi for me. My trick with sushi rolls is to enjoy the company I'm with and try to guess what I'm actually eating. Incidentally, I don't recall ever seeing an avocado in a restaurant when I was growing up in Japan, but apparently it's a major component for every sushi roll made in Texas. I did mention to our sushi guys that we weren't in the mood for avocado that day, and they were only too happy to oblige my humble request. I bumped my Tomo rating from three to four stars for two reasons: I didn't notice their aquarium until we were leaving, and I finally had to go back and ask the staff whether it was real or not - and I can't believe I was wrong. And secondly, as we were slowly strolling around the interesting strip-mall complex Tomo is in, we were surprised to turn around and see our server chasing us waving my companion's sunglasses in the air; I thought it was pretty cool they made an effort to find us after we left. Finally, I thought our tab with tip for $70 wasn't that unreasonable for what we had and what this place is, but in the end, it's how you interpret value for the buck: For a slightly higher price you can do a full-blown lunch extravaganza for two at Fogo, or for slightly less you can go to town with Perry's Friday Pork Chop Special, with the valet thrown in. But you know what? It's all academic - what it's really all about is hanging out and just having some fun for lunch, because that's the priceless. read more

Let me start of this review by telling you a little story. I was sitting at the bar with my friend, when a clearly affluent man and his clearly surgeried girlfriend sat right next to us. The chef asks what they would like and after ordering drinks, the male member of that duo says "Just feed me. I want whatever you have and everything that is on special". I, being not as affluent and certainly not as adventurous, settled in with my saketini to wait. The thing that made the biggest impression on me was the lobster presentation. Imagine this: Live lobster, claws off and clawmeat turned into little sushi piles, sitting on the plate. His tail meat in squares on his back and his little tentacle things still movin around. It was horrifying and fascinating at the same time. I think that probably illustrates the freshness of the sushi you will get at tomo. Reasonably priced, totally delicious, always an experience. It doesnt have the uppity overpriced attitude of kenichi or maiko (which i appreciate). You're serving me raw fish here people... not gold. And dont blow smoke up my rear... it tickles and the wasabi goes up my nose and its just a question of how fast I can get to the bathroom before my eyeballs start the waterfall. Simple, fresh, unpretentious and the interesting combos they cookup are worth stepping over the line in the sand. Service can be a little slow... but shouldnt we all slow down and savor it anyway? read more

TOMO Arigato, Mr. Roboto..Tomo! (tomo)... Tomo! (tomo) I think that's what Styx was singing.. At least that's what *I* was saying when I went here for my birthday dinner. I got full off some Tasty dishes, such as the Screaming Orgasm, the Dynamite, Say My Name! roll, and whatever they call the crabcake. I think it's just called Crab Cake... Which fits, because it was the only item we ordered that was boring and sub-par. Our server was patient, attentive and friendly. It was a slow Monday night, so I'm not sure if we would've had the same service if it was busy, but I had no problems with her at all. When we were seated, the music was barely audible, so my friend asked one of the chefs to turn it up a bit. This was a mistake in my opinion, because he smiled like, "oh snap it's a party up in herr now!" Then he turned it up and later began to rap along to the hip-hop. I like a casual atmosphere, but after we were there awhile I think the guys behind the sushi bar got a bit too casual. Loudly discussing how so-and-so "rolls it so tight you can hardly smoke it".. I'm assuming he wasn't talking about a tuna hand roll. So to the other Yelpers callin out the chefs' lack of professionalism.. I feel ya. Everything else was fine though, really. I wouldn't hesitate to go back and try some of the sashimi. Perhaps I'll stick to the mid-week dinner for the best service. read more
