I've been going to Tomo for over 10 years, I can't believe I never left them a review. I guess they were doing so well I did not think they needed it! This place is one of the best sushi restaurants in the United States. Fish is always fresh, atmosphere is wonderful and service is always great. My first visit was so good I was ready to give them 4 or even 5 stars (minus the Tomoviche, that was chewy and no one at the table liked it). I left feeling I had to come back very soon. I came back less than a week later. Unfortunately, the second visit was no where near as good as the first. I don't always do this, but this is an example for why it's can be a good idea to review a place after you've been at least twice. My first visit was a solid 4, my second a solid 2. Giving them the benefit of the doubt that it may have just been an off night, I'm averaging it out to 3 stars. On the first visit, service was exceptional. We basically had two servers and always felt they were near by and everything came out lightening fast even though they were packed. On the second visit I wasn't sure our server even worked there since she came by so infrequently and with long periods of time in between to the point where we got really hungry after waiting so long to order food. It then took a long time to come out too. I am quite patient in this regard, but having already experienced quick service the first time set an expectation that it would normally be that way here. On the first visit I left personally thanking the sushi chefs for a great meal. On the second visit, the sushi chefs seemed much more interested in the Women's World Cup soccer match than with actually making sushi. They were really busy too, it was a bit odd. I mean, it was group play match between the Ivory Coast and Thailand. I love me some world cup, but really? 3 sushi chefs needed to just stare at the game? Anyway, after the first visit I was excited to have a sushi place that reminded me of some great spots in California and I couldn't wait to go again. We were waiting for a record number of people for a sushi celebration. Our orders were taken after the fourteen of us showed. Our waitress seemed excited and a little anxious since she didn't know what kind of a crowd we'd be. I understood her apprehension as we started ordering everything. on. the. menu. This is the way to do sushi. If you had any question as to the depth of the menu or the flexibility of the staff you can rest assured that they will rise to the occasion. Certain things stood out among others, and overall the menu did not disappoint. I will not say that everything that we had was above average. I don't like anything with mayo, and would advise against trying anything with mayo in the recipe in general, not necessarily here at Tomo. This may be a personal taste thing, but there is something just not right with it. The fish was fresh and the presentation was good. The salmon was the standout for me, and the sushi dinner is a great cross section of traditional as offered by Tomo. They offer fresh wasabi as well as the powdered variety, so for you traditionalists, don't throw your nose in the air until you've tried this restaurant. The price is a little higher than that of another restaurant you might find in a strip mall, but it is sushi. While it's not as expensive as Uchi, the overhead is much lower. So it would follow that the prices are lower and the quality is on par for the palate. Expect to be transported by this place and forget you're in northwest Austin. When I sat down at the sushi bar, I immediately noticed two whole aji -- horse mackerel -- with perfectly bright, clear eyes. I requested an entire fish served sashimi style, which surprised the waitress. She apparently didn't know that when you order the entire fish, they deep-fry the carcass and serve it on the side. This was an immensely satisfying dish. Wife ordered a spicy tuna roll, even though we both know better than that, and it was acceptable but had more sauce than she expected. Valentines day, 2014. Reservations were made 2 weeks prior. Had to wait 45 minutes after our reservation time. Why? Because they were seating one walk up, one reservation at a time. They were too greedy to turn away customers. Meanwhile, the hostess, Rebecca, is telling everyone that asks that the current wait time is 30-40 minutes. I watched as she told 5 different customers the same wait time in the span of 5 minutes. The place only has less than a dozen tables. None of it adds up. When the manager was confronted about the long wait time by several people that reserved a time, all she could say was sorry, but meanwhile still seating walk ups over reserves. Greedy much? Better for rolls than Nigiri, Seems I'm the last person to know about this place but I usually stick to my two goto sushi spots. My friends have praised about this place, I really wanted to be blown out of the park. The two rolls I did have we're pretty good, not a huge fan of specialty rolls. But they were really good, especially the tempura #2. The ex girlfriend was the rave of all my friends, that did not let down. I ordered some nigiri and was sadly let down. The fish to rice ratio was off, not enough rice. The color of the salmon was alarming and it wasn't the right taste. Service was spot on, there was only one lady serving the entire place and she was quick. I would definitely be back to try some more rolls but I will not be ordering anymore nigiri. read more

I've given a lot of good reviews lately so I am being extra cynical and trying to find fault with the places I eat. Tomodachi passed the test with flying colors though. I don't think I've ever had more fresh tasting sushi anywhere. We sat at the bar and ordered our standard app of dumplings which were great with a tangy dipping sauce on the side. I then had the Mexican roll and my fiancee the "Pregnant Ex-Girlfriend" which she had had before and was the better of the 2 dishes although I have no complaints with my dish either. The most important aspect of the experience: PERFECT rice. Ambiance was very, very cool- a high end, modern Japanese aura. The tables were fine, but I would recommend sitting at the bar (and I'll indubitably choose the bar next time I visit, which will be soon). So my husband and I have been hearing about this place from family and friends. I may have had a high standard from what I was told and how amazing this place is........ so we tried it. This place is small I would not recommend more than 4 guests per table. We sat at the sushi bar and it's cozy. Our waitress was quick with water and drink orders but out of 2 appetizers we ordered we only received one (mine my husbands was left off). Then when we were ready to order our rolls for dinner our waitress was Nowhere to be found even other staff couldn't find her..... another team member took our dinner order. I had questions about the rolls I ordered and they didn't understand enough English to provide a decent answer so I didn't order as much as I would have. One of the sushi chiefs was able to understand me better and even made changes to the roll so I would like it more. But when the roll was made I did find a hair. ( I just left that piece and didn't argue about it) The rolls came out in decent time and where plated nicely. The one roll I ordered called 2 Beers was not how I imagined it. The fish is finely chopped and mooshy within the roll. Then they topped it with very spicy sauce. I couldn't eat it and told our original waitress (who finally showed up and didn't apologize about her absence) she then took the roll away and apologized. She once again went MIA for a while and didn't pop back up till a couple sat next to us. By now my husband and I are NOT THRILLED WITH THE SERVICE. We asked for the check, and upon receiving it our waitress very Rudely and Aggressively told us that she had tasted my roll I didn't like and came to the conclusion nothing about it was wrong. Other than I WAS THE ONE WRONG SINCE I JUST BLATANTLY ORDERED SOMETHING I DIDNT LIKE. She didn't apologize again just matter of factly said this was a one time courtesy of them removing the roll from the tab. 1) poor service 2) poor customer service 3) finely chopped soggy sushi 4) got blamed that it was my fault in the end. I went to Tomodachi for the first time this past weekend with a couple of friends & OMGSH, this place is my new favorite sushi restaurant!!! I'm really not too particular about most things, but when it comes to sushi, I'm definitely a sushi snob. I've been to more sushi places than you can shake a stick at & I can honestly say that Tomodachi has the best sushi that I've ever had in my entire life! All of their rolls have tongue-in-cheek names (i.e. Ex Girlfriend) & they tasted absolutely incredible. The fish was super fresh, the presentation was sharp, & all of the flavors complemented each other beautifully for one delightful bite. Agedashi tofu is one of my favorite appetizers & it's always my default order when I'm trying out a new sushi restaurant. I've tasted the good, the bad, & the ugly when ordering this dish at other restaurants. Tomodachi did not disappoint & I was amazed by how perfect their Agedashi tofu was. Definitely the best I've ever had. There was a generous serving of mushrooms in their miso soup and I appreciated how they included several different types of mushrooms. This was not a garden variety miso soup. Our super sweet server, Danielle, made our already amazing dining experience even more wonderful. She had the most gorgeous smile & such a bright personality. Danielle was very attentive and not once did I have to call her over for anything. It was clear that she loves working at Tomodachi not only because of her happy demeanor, but because of how well she knew the menu and how excited she got when she was giving recommendations on what rolls we should order. In addition to the great food and service, the atmosphere of this restaurant was lovely. My dining experience at Tomodachi was flawless! Living in Austin, day 35. I found a japanese place that makes a damn good bowl of soup. (Sigh of relief). So this review is for their Udon, since I didn't have the sushi-- actually I had a tuna roll, which was good, but anyway... I'm partial to ramen, more than udon. But they do it really good here. They slightly undercook the noodles so it's still cooking as it sits in the bowl and doesn't turn to mush by the time you get to the bottom. The broth has just the right heaviness and saltiness, while pickled vegetables add a touch of sweetness. And they float an egg sunny-side up over the top (not boiled) so you can stir it in the way you want. The tempura is great too. Not the typical A grade that you get spending 80+ per person for a meal. I went for the first time on Monday. It's a nice ambient restaurant with your standard sushi bar feel. We were welcomed and greeted politely... I just want to say the sushi and food was absolutely fantastic. The man that made our sushi was helpful when we had questions and very nice. Now, I have one complaint... We sat in the middle of the bar and when we first got there, the restaurant was empty. We saw our waitress maybe four times in the hour and a half that we were there. A party - of what seemed to be a group of regulars - came in and she completely forgot about us. I waited almost 30 minutes for our check when we were clearly done eating... This is hands-down my favorite sushi restaurant in Austin. The chefs are knowledgeable, skilled and are really nice guys. The sushi is always fresh, tasty and prepared artfully. They do scandalous things with raw fish, I tell you! We have eaten here so many times. I've introduced many friends. Really, I could go on but you just need to try it. Try to hit lunch service on Saturday if you don't want to wait. THEY ARE NOT OPEN ON SUNDAY I can't tell you how many Sunday's I've driven past only to be disappointed. Tip: If you plan to eat here, call ahead and ask for the hamachi kama. They only get one per fish because it's the collar, so reserving it is smart. You won't be disappointed. It's served sashimi style then the rest is grilled with sea salt and yuzu. Everything here is amazing. Items not to miss: Ex-Girlfriend Roll Who's Your Daddy Roll ama ebi with quail egg (raw shrimp with quail egg and fresh wasabi plus they fry the head - don't make a face, it's good) seared sake toro (scored, then torch-seared) Tomoviche style live scallop live eel Before you look through the menu, look at the chalk boards at the end of the sushi bar. This is where the daily specials are kept. Go earlyish and you will have the best selection. When they are out of something, they are really out of it - nothing harbored in the back so you are out of luck. Lobster night is a must-do! You need to be placed on their list for the next one. They call you a few nights ahead. It's 65/person I believe (or near that at least) for 3 lobster courses including lobster tail sashimi, claw sushi and then lobster miso soup. FANTASTIC I highly recommend trying this! My only complaint is that the restaurant is small! I'd fear that they'd move and something would change though. read more

We live in Round Rock so I love finding delicious spots in North Austin! Tomo is incredible. The Screaming Orgasm may have been the best tuna tartare dish I have ever had, so fresh and full of flavor. We had three rolls: Spicy Shrimp, Who's Your Daddy?, and Something Wrong. All of them were incredible but Something Wrong took the cake! We waited about 20 minutes on a Saturday night, which was no problem. The host and wait staff were very friendly but they seemed a little overwhelmed. We were never asked if we wanted a second drink (which we would have taken) and they forgot to bring us the edamame that we ordered. "Whoa" is what the person next to me at the sushi bar said when the sushi chef set our plate in front of us. Whoa was right, lady. It tasted just as good as it looked. The plate was beautifully decorated with 4 rolls: Spicy Salmon, Philadelphia, Something Wrong and Rainbow. Something Wrong didn't live up to its name because it was definitely something awesome. It was my favorite roll of the night - the shrimp tempura and soft shell crab on the inside and fresh tuna, salmon and yellowtail on top hit the spot. The other rolls were pretty good, but the missing star on this review is because they didn't totally rock my taste buds crazy. Also, maybe this is the way it's actually supposed to be done or I'm just weird, but the rolls/fish were slightly warmer than I've had before. The place was packed with a waiting list on a Friday night, but there were open spots at the sushi bar and since we were only a party of two, we jumped on it. And it made sense because it's a pretty small place so the wait didn't seem worth it. Watching the sushi chefs crank out plate after plate of colorful rolls was entertaining, too. Although the place is small, the decor is pretty cool. I liked the underwater-rock-looking table top, and I love the little private room in the back. It's perfect for an intimate group dinner. This is what I had: Japanese Snapper Sushi: This was insanely good. They have tons of specials on the board and this one was recommended by our particularly handsy waitress. And it was delicious. Salmon Sushi: It was insanely fatty, I thought it might be salmon belly. This is a good thing, the fattier, the more buttery it is. So It was delicious. Sushi Bomb: This was assorted pieces of fish with fresh wasabi. It goes right up your nose and burns for an extended period of time. It's kind of painful, but addictive for the thrill-seeker that I am (only when it comes to food). A few rolls: I don't remember which ones I got but they were very good and inventive. Probably my favorite sushi place in Austin so far. A girl friend and I went a couple months ago (I've been back many times since then). We started out with some decent Riesling (or so she says- I'm not a fan of most white wine) and spicy edamame. While a bit overpriced for edamame ($7), it was pretty good and at least worth trying. We took a while ordering our food since it was our first time there. Even though they were busy, our server was patient and helpful. We ended up getting 2 salmon skin rolls (my faaavorite roll but be warned that it's pretty fishy), the ex-girlfriend, and the dancing eel add avocado. The food didn't take too long to come out, and when it did...omgzzz nommzzz. We didn't have room for dessert that time, but I got mochi ice cream the next time I went with my fiance. My recent experience here was very different than the negative comments I made in my first review. The issues I had with this place back then weren't even on the radar this time. They must've had some new business growing pains to go through and I am glad to see what the end result is now. The atmosphere is the same as before, seating options at the bar, a few tables and semi-private areas for larger groups. The quality of the sushi was far better this time. The spicy garlic sashimi was delightful, it set the mood and our tastebuds for the rest of the meal. Each piece and roll had good quality fish with excellent flavor harmony. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. The prices are fair considering its good sushi and a pretty authentic Japanese restaurant. I love this place.... and not just because it's less than 3 miles from my house. Discovered it on a whim, who would've thought a small sushi place in a stripmall in North Austin would be so good. I've tried the various sashimi, nigiri, and rolls and the fish is always fresh. My favorite dish is actually baked and it is called the Japenese Lasagna.. yum.. yum.. yum! The chefs and waitresses are very friendly and make you feel right at home.. they can usually be seen taking shots with fellow diners.. ..the best part of it all is they also serve you delicious sushi and drinks! Really great quality sushi, but pretty pricey. Had the cherry bomb too which is in fresh crab meat in the middle of an avocado shaped apple. It was heavenly, but very rich and heavy. But the crab was tasty and high quality. I love their miso soup too because they put the fresh Japanese mushrooms in them. I forgot the names of the other rolls I had, but they were all delectable and well-presented. I've been here twice and the service is always prompt and friendly. Tomo has a really cool ambiance. As soon as you walk in the door, you are greeted by a jellyfish tank (SWEET!), followed by a very modern sushi bar. The Spicy Tomo roll is something I never thought I'd try (salsa on top of sushi), but it is excellent. For those looking for a simpler dish, the California roll is also amazing. If you're an Uchi lover, you should definitely give Tomo a try. You'll leave more content and with a thicker wallet. read more

Well initially Tomodachi started off at 5 stars, but halfway through my meal, I had to knock it down to 3. It's a very small sushi restaurant located oddly in a small strip center just west of mopac & Parmer. The decor is nothing to write home about. Just white walls with a few random paper prints in basic white plastic frames. Ok, enough about that. Now to the sushi. Like I said, it started off great. I sat at the bar and asked the sushi chef to prepare whatever he wanted. I was open to anything. First I tried the live scallop. Impeccable!! So silky smooth & buttery. The chef warned me when serving it not to add soy sauce & he was absolutely right-definitely not needed. Next I had sashimi salmon. This is where things started to fall flat. (That & the fact that I still hadn't been served the hot sake I ordered 20mins prior) I thought the salmon tasted kinda fishy-obviously in a bad way. After the salmon, I had the screaming orgasm. This is one of the strangest things I have ever eaten. It's basically slices of tuna with a thin mayo dressing on top of a bed of coleslaw. An absolute waste with something that's name would make you think it's to die for. Trust me, don't order it ! At this point I started to realize the menu was very limited and the sushi chef couldn't come up with any dishes that he recommended. I'm hoping that he just wanted to get us out of there because we had stayed passed operating hours. If not, he doesn't think the sushi here is that great either. Overall not impressed, but not completely deterred. I may try Tomo again ...but not any time soon. read more

My only problem was the size of the Escolar I received. I was a little saddened that one piece was a little bit bigger than that of a match-book. (or could nicely fit on your tongue) So in relative two pieces equal one, instead of two like that should, I felt a little ripped off. (I guess I am just used to being spoiled by bigger pieces @DKs) Anyway.. I got the Tempura Bento lunch, I REALLY like fried things in tempura. The salad that came with it, very good. The shrimp very good! if and when I come back, I will be getting this! I went for lunch, I know price is apparently something you shouldn't think about when eating here (Spending money...common sense?) Yeah... I'd like to not go bankrupt after I am done eating during LUNCH time. I would maybe go here once a week or even less; I came here with my mom because she LOVES this place. haha. Tomo does a pretty good job at sushi up north. They have the basics down and do a pretty inventive job at creating their own specialties. They have a couple of cheeseball names for rolls like Sex on the Beach, and the My Ex-Girlfriend, but if you can get past the names you might be pleasantly surprised. The My Ex-Girlfriend is pretty good. The Tomo Halibut is different and has an appealing taste. Volcano roll was so so. Austin Roll has a Southeast Asian flair with the rice paper rolls. Think I might try the udon next time. And this is the BEST place to embarrass someone on their birthday. Their staff goes above and beyond expectation. read more

I have enjoyed sushi all over Austin, and Tomo on Parmer Lane is one of the best. I have sampled most of the rolls on the menu, and they do not disappoint. The owner hails from the Las Vegas sushi scene and the combination of flavors in the rolls highlights the creativity that is common on the Vegas Strip. Tips for the first time Tomo-sexual: 1. Try the Sushi bomb. Under $12, this plate comes with four different pieces of fish, sashimi style with a dalop of fresh wasabi (mmmmm) and a garlicy yet not overbearing sauce below the fish. An excellent, albeit spicy, taste treat and a great way to see what fish is fresh and how the restaurant slices their fish. Sit at the bar. Better service. I have been underwhelmed by the service at the tables, whereas the sushi chefs are engaging and creative. For the first time sushi eater, sitting at the bar give you a birds eye view of what is created, what fish looks good, and how things are made. My one warning, watch out for the up-sell. The chefs are proud of their rolls, but the better ones are expensive. This evening could easily rack up a large bill if you are not careful. Get a shooter if that is your thing. I am not a fan of the shooters, but one evening while sitting next to two differnt couples, the shooters were served up like sake during happy hour. The presentation of these fun creations is eye appealing (and according to our sushi comrades taste-tastic). Try to $50 dollar sashimi plate if you have a large table. It has an array of fish and is a good deal for larger groups that like fish, fish and more fish. Maybe not the best idea for the sushi novice though because you could end up with a lot of fish in the dish for those squirmish about tentacles or fish eggs. This isn't Uchi, or Uchiko, or even Musashino, but it's surprisingly good for a suburban strip mall sushi place, and priced appropriately. I've been here numerous times with consistently good experiences. Rolls and nigiri are always fresh and well-executed. Nice saki selection. General Consensus: Update: This is still my favorite place in town for traditional sushi. Order from the specials if you can--they are delightful. Food: Ama ebi: Still sweet with a soft chew to the texture and they still serve the heads fried on the side. Aji: My now favorite mackerel. Live Octopus: Tender, raw and served with yuzu, a single cilantro leaf and a dollop of siracha on each piece. Sea Bass: A single small chive (I think) with a slice of mushroom on top of the sea bass. It's served with a tangy savory sauce and tastes like a meal in one bite. Sake toro: fatty salmon that's tender and rich. Ankimono: Monkfish liver--I had it last time and I'm going to say it again here that it is fantastic. 3 discs of liver served in a savory sauce with roe, and I think slices of green onion with a single lychee. Eating all of the elements together you get the slight beady texture from the roe, with crisp freshness coming from the onion which cuts the richness of the liver and a bit of sweetness from the lychee. Great! Atmosphere and Service: Yoko was our server and she was fantastic--friendly, had excellent recommendations and attended well. I love this place. It's low key, no fuss with great, great sushi. I think Steve and Tina run a fantastic sushi place. I sincerely think this is some of the best for pure, clean fresh fish in town. I can't speak for the rolls since it seems like such a crime when there's an elegant simplicity and beauty to the nigiri and sashimi served here. read more
