I have to say when I moved to Texas, I expected good BBQ and Tex Mex but never did I expect to find such amazing sushi! And I feel it's necessary to qualify my statement in that for the past 30 years prior to moving to TX, I live in Southern California and have been to more than 50 countries. I've been to a few other sushi restaurants since moving to Austin that I won't ever return to, but Tomodachi would easily compete with any of the top sushi restaurants back in SoCal. A local friend recommended Tomodachi and we decided to give it a try. Now, it's our "go-to" place for sushi. Make sure to call ahead for reservations but quite often, you can get a reservation for the same day. On our first visit, we just showed up but after 30 minutes they gave us a table. Again, going forward we always call ahead. And after having been here several times, they are very consistent! This most recent visit, we ordered a seaweed salad to star and the fried tofu. Both were excellent, but it's the sushi we come for! We always start off with some nigiri and never go wrong with the Tuna, Salmon and Yellow Tail. Their fish is without question, some of the freshest fish I have ever tasted anywhere in the world! Sometimes we get the Toro Salmon or Toro Tuna which are amazing, but the regular tuna and salmon are incredible! For rolls, I'm a big fan of Philadelphia Rolls but we are making our way down their list of specialty rolls. So far, we are pretty big fan of the Sex on the Beach roll, Who's ur Daddy and Ex-Girlfriend. On one of our visits, we did try the calamari and we won't order that again. But I really don't care since calamari really isn't something I would normally order when going for sushi. Again, I cannot say enough about the freshness of the fish at this sushi restaurant and this is comparing to any sushi I've had in this country and other parts of the world. read more

My first experience at Tomodachi Sushi was really great. We came here on a Friday or Saturday night and did not have reservations. We were very lucky they squeeze us in and told us there will be only 45 mins to eat which was more than enough for us. Service was great and fast. Our waiter was super nice and recommended the rock shrimp tempura for the appetizer which was outstanding! That rock shrimp was so good with the salad! Vinaigrette was so well balance and flavorful. The shrimp was crispy creamy and the batter to shrimp ratio was on point! We ordered the Austin roll, Eel roll, something wrong roll, truffle king salmon nigiri, scallop nigiri, and uni nigiri. The truffle king salmon was nothing I have ever had and was so freaking good! The scallop was okay and the Uni was so fresh! The something wrong roll was good but I feel the ponzu was on the sour side which made the roll a bit off. The Austin roll was good and the eel was not the best I had but decent. For our first experience with the service and sushi quality, was a 5 star and got me excited to come back! Our second experience, I made reservations on the phone and was not the best experience. We made reservations for 4:15pm on a Saturday. I received a text 3 hrs before my reservation from the restaurant on the day of my reservation asking me to come earlier at 2:30 or come later at 5:30pm. I responded back via text I will not be able to come earlier or later and ask what happened to our reservations at 4:15pm we confirmed over the phone?The restaurant responded it was a mistake but they will see me at 4:15pm. In my opinion this is very unprofessional and not the best way to make your customer feel welcome. We had made plans around the dinner reservations and had events to attend before and after. If the restaurant made a mistake and could have accommodated, then there should not be a need to reach out to the customer via text and stress them out about reservations. I brushed off the incident and continue onward. There was lady waitress and that took our order. We ordered volcano roll (our favorite and it was the best roll we tried there), calamari (batter was crumbly and not the best. You can taste the calamari because it was thick which I appreciate but it was one note. The sauce that came with us was just sour and the oil of the sauce was not mixed so it's just floating on top. When you dip the calamari all you would taste is oil from the sauce.), salmon nigiri, escolar nigiri, Naked roll(least favorite), who's your daddy roll (good but missing crispy texture), and 2 beer roll (spicy). After we got done with our appetizer and we were waiting for our sushi (5pm), the same Asian lady waitress came and inform we had to leave at 5:30pm. She was kinda rude and short about it. I really don't know why she is is rushing us when we were told we had 1 1/2 hr for dining with reservations. Also we haven't received our food yet so how can we begin eating???? Honestly so unprofessional to be pulsing us in the middle of our dining experience and ruined our dining experience. She did the same thing to the couple next to us that came in after us and I witness them trying to chug their sake drinks so they can hurry up. Also there was only 3 parties including us in the restaurant. There was SO many tables open including the bar area... I'm still perplexed why they needed to text me to come back later when their restaurant wasn't even full of reservations when we came in. It was practically empty. SMH. Honestly my first experience was really great but my second experience I would never come back. That specific employee needs additional training not to ruin people's dining experience. There is plenty of sushi restaurants in Austin and just because their space doesn't accommodate more people doesn't give them the right to rush ppl like cattle. Their sushi is not mind blowing like Michelin star worthy and even if they had a Michelin star should not treat their customers like that. I unfortunately would not recommend this restaurant to friends and family. Unfortunate because our first waiter was really kind and great. And their truffle king salmon nigiri, volcano roll, and rock shrimp tempura salad was amazing. read more

Visited Tomodachi for lunch as it was recommended by a friend and right next to where I get my massages. I will preface this by saying I have a shellfish allergy so I got the 'who's ur daddy' and spicy salmon roll. The 'who's ur daddy' comes with spicy tuna, asparagus (I subbed for avocado), salmon and a spicy creamy sauce. The tuna in the 'who's ur daddy' had an odd taste to it and the sauce that was on top was said to be like a spicy mayo but was pretty sweet. I would order the spicy salmon again! read more

I was looking for a sushi restaurant near Ascension Seton Northwest hospital and this popped up on my radar. I'm glad I tried it. Sushi here is absolutely fresh and delicious and they got my order out promptly despite a full house from the lunchtime crowd. Prices are very reasonable, especially for Austin. Have been going to this place for years now with my family and is pretty much our go to sushi place when eating out. The rolls here are so creative and definitely a lot more interestingly named than I initially realized when I first started going here. Would definitely recommend the volcano roll! It has a healthy amount of scallop topping as well as nice fatty salmon. I also love the cherry blossom appetizer. The nice creamy avocado pairs well with the crunchy soft shelled crab and it is beautiful presented with a lot of eel sauce over top! My main complaint would be that I don't really enjoy the sashimi and nigiri here. The portion of fish is smaller than other restaurants I have been to and doesn't taste as fresh. You know things have taken a quick turn after trying out almost every sushi restaurant in town, and only declaring 3 worthy-- Tomo is not one of them. We ordered the Spicy Edamame, the Sushi Dinner, and the Naked Roll for starters. The Spicy Edamame, bland. There was no flavor whatsoever, just because you add spice to it does not make it spicy or flavorful. The Sushi Dinner comes with 8 pieces of Sushi (chef's choice) and either a California Roll or a Spicy Tuna Roll. Each sushi piece was just... pieces of sushi. Nothing exceptional about it. Quality of the fish was average. The Naked Roll comes with tuna, salmon, escolar, and imitation crab meat, wrapped by a thin layer of Radish Sprouts and Rice Paper. This was okay, but nothing worth returning over... Just a heads up, if you do not like raw fish/enjoy the Americanized version of sushi, Tomo has a variety of the perfect rolls for you. Most of the rolls are fried (tempura styled), and have a vulgar name to each roll ie: 4 Play, Sex on the Beach, Mexican Roll (because it has salsa...), Who's Ur Daddy, Road Head/Hand Roll, Double D!!, and honestly, there are probably some secret terms in there I don't even know about. The decor of the restaurant felt cheap like a Sushi Sports Bar with one tv and dingy dining furniture you could have purchased from Ikea. Just everything about this place felt wrong. I was browsing reviews and decided to try this sushi joint for takeout for dinner. I had their Screaming Orgasm under their appetizer menu and the Sassy Suzy roll. Sushi is best when fresh and it was still fresh even in the comfort of my home. The fish tasted refreshing and I enjoyed every bite of my dinner. If anything I regret ordering more! After much head-scratching, I'm almost certain that the yum-yum roll consists of scallops and avocado inside, but whatever it is, this roll was delicious. It tastes so fresh and clean. For a strip mall sushi joint, this place is legit. A friend recommended this spot to us and we were able to call and get a reservation for the same day - which is always appreciated in this city. We ordered four of the speciality rolls and we were pleasantly surprised by the quality. It's not the best sushi I've ever had, but it was very well made and fresh for the price and the spot. The restaurant is a bit small so I would recommend calling for reservations! They did tell us when we called that we would only get the table for one hour - which I didn't love but the service was so quick that it was easy to wrap up in that amount of time. It seemed to be full of regulars who knew many of the staff, which is always a good sign. The table next to us seemed to be ordering omakase and had some beautiful stuff come out to their table, so would like to try that next time. Well- some things never change- or they just inprove with age! It's a continuing tribute to Master Sushi Chef Steve. Many of his highly trained sushi chefs like Chad and Goose have been with him for a decade. His wife Tina and long time server Suzie also there. If you have the chance grab a seat at the bar- it is fascinating to see the indescribable beauty that comes out on every plate. I've never understood the fascination with sho-gun style restaurants who perform the same song & dance at every table every meal. The artistry that comes out of a sushi master is unique to the roll and the creator. It is so delicious here at Tomo. Try the Cherry Blossom- how the mixture of soft shell crab is wrapped in delicate slices of avocado- forming a perfectly shaped ball is beyond me...the clientele here would likely follow Steve and his team anywhere. We LOVE tomodachi! We have been to this spot a few times for fancy date nights and have always had a great experience! The restaurant is a packed little space, but the sushi is the best in town! We always start with the Salmon goat cheese, seriously incredible and I have yet to find a better pairing. I loved the Miller! The description was lacking, but this roll was delicious and fresh! You can tell how great a place is when you roll up and there are people waiting outside standing because the chairs are taken by patient diners. Tomodachi is great for groups of friends and fits perfectly because the literal translation of tomodachi is "friends". The head chef here has experience working at the famous Nobu sushi in Vegas so I'd say that alone, gives this spot the stamp of approval. It's not all you can eat which is fine because by the end of the meal, I was stuffed. I started with the Cherry Blossom ($11.50), a beautiful little flower of soft shelled crab wrapped in avocado and unagi sauce. Then I moved on to the rolls: 4 Play ($13) and Something Wrong ($14). The former wasn't what I was used to so I can't say I didn't like it, I just enjoyed the latter much more. My tomodachi's each ordered other rolls which I had a chance to sample and all were oishii! Easily the best sushi in Austin! Quite honestly, it's on par with Uchi (just for a better deal!)!! I went the other day for the first time since COVID and let me tell you, I walked out so full and so happy. This time I got the ex-girlfriend roll which was PHENOMENAL and my mom got the rainbow roll, the escolar goes down soooo smooth. We also got mixed veggie tempura, and it was battered perfectly! Not Then we caved and get the tempura #2. We sat at the bar this time, and it made the experience that much better. The chefs are so nice and the sushi right to you!
