The lunch came with miso soup, a very fresh green salad, rice and a gyoza. What I liked: Sashimi was very fresh as was the green salad. The roll was excellent and not rolled with heavy rice. Yeah, of all the sushi place (that is not AYCE) that I have visited, this place probably the worse experience you can get with your money. Came in on a Sunday, I guess it's a good thing the AC is working, because there would not be other redeeming quality in this place. I guess whatever food place you put in a place like the Porter Ranch plaza, don't bother, I tried Silverlake Ramen, and it was the same dissappointment. Why the one star you might ask? We tried the following: Dynamite - The dynamite appetizer, this was a jumbled mess of some shrimp, scallops and they put asparagus? It's an odd mix, and there was this heavy tangy taste to it. Chirashi - We ordered the Chirashi, and half the fish were frozen, you can see the ice still slathering on the body of the fish - The tuna was not fresh, and when you eat it, there was some slimy texture on the fish, mind you this was supposed to be fresh. - The shrimp has no taste whatsoever, it's like biting into a paper - The tamago (egg) was hella sweet, it almost tasted like a desert on your sushi bowl Blue crab roll - The roll was overflowing with rice, and it was just a goop of stuff, piled into the roll. Tomodachi is the only Japanese restaurant at the Porter Ranch Vineyards. Nothing fancy inside, but a locale that provides excellent service and good food. It depends what you are in the mood for, and if you are not picky, you will find it, or something close to it, at this place. I come here to eat the basics, fresh fish, preferably sashimi style. Generally always start with their miso soup. Here it is priced at $2, is served piping hot (just the way I like it), has high quality and hits all the right notes to satisfy the nose and palate. For me, this sets the tone for lunch or dinner. This time it was the latter and I was in the mood for sashimi (of course), but also for a salad. So I selected a hybrid, the Sashimi Salad (3 pcs tuna, 2 pcs each of salmon, yellowtail, albacore, and 1 pce shrimp on top of mixed greens with soy mustard dressing). While the fish cuts were small, they were soft, had texture and hugged the tongue well while eating. I asked for the dressing on the side. For me this is important, because eateries tend to soak salads in dressing and mask the real taste and diversity of the dish. Ginger (not over pickled) and wasabi is complementary and I went through two portions of Ginger fast, and requested more. For the third time, they brought it in a small packed crucible. LOL. If you're looking for good quality sushi at a reasonable price, I'd look at other sushi places around the valley first before trying this one. I was so excited that a sushi restaurant opened in the vineyards so I took me and my friend there. The food itself was mediocre. I wouldn't label it as bad, but it's very expensive for the quality that you're getting. A lot of the sushi felt like it was smothered in the same sauce. I don't think I'd comeback. We also got stomach aches after eating there. I will say the inside as you walk in is super nice, great ambience. And the staff greets you so friendly as soon as you walk in. The food presentation looks very aesthetic and nicely plated. If I had to rate solely on that it would be a 4 star. But my rating is based on my experience with actually trying the food. The orange chicken, spicy tuna with a biscuit and gyoza was pretty good. The issue was the base roll is made with fake crabmeat, not sure if there was real crab but didn't taste like it. First time here with my daughter and bestie. We ordered the Dynamite appetizer, Rainbow Roll, Eel Special Roll & Albacore Delight but we were given the Alaskan Roll by mistake. We just went with it and didn't mention the mistake because we started eating the roll and then realized they got our order wrong. Maybe it was meant to be because it was delicious! So we weren't mad about it. The sushi rolls are cut much bigger than other sushi joints and the menu is straight forward and not over whelming. The fish was fresh and presentation was beautiful. The amount of food we ordered were more than enough and ended up taking some home to my husband to enjoy! Nice modern ambiance. We enjoyed each other's company and didn't feel like we were being rushed to leave or to hurry up and scarf down our dinner. We had a very disappointing experience tonight while dining with my family. Our waitress, Jess, was inattentive and repeatedly went missing when we asked for simple things like plates or napkins. Service was slow and frustrating throughout the meal. More concerning, the waitress told my toddler that he could eat the purple orchid flower that was placed on the plate as decoration. My son then tried to eat it and became upset when I had to take it away. After looking into it, I learned that these decorative flowers are typically not meant to be eaten and may even contain chemicals. No restaurant staff member should ever tell someone else's child that it's okay to eat something from the table without checking with the parent first. That is completely inappropriate and unacceptable. Overall, this was a very disappointing and unprofessional experience. read more

We were disappointed with the service as most of the servers seemed confused about the sequence of serving the food. 2/3 of our soups arrived and we had to remind the staff that there should be one more. That came out with a bowl of rice. The rice was to accompany the sashimi lunch. 3/4 meals were delivered. The server failed to enter the sashimi lunch so it followed at least 10mins afterward. The bowl of rice was cold. We had it replaced only after having to ask. Our bento boxes arrived room temperature...the shrimp and veg tempura was basically cold & the shrimp was dry. Luckily the ambiance was comfortable, with the dining room being clean & tidy. We are so satisfied with the Tomodachi near our home in Thousand Oaks. We discovered that all Tomodachis are NOT CREATED EQUAL! It's unfortunate. We won't return to the Porter Ranch location. read more

Appalling, stressful dining experience. Our servers were immature, oblivious and lacked basic human instincts. Conflict resolution skills were also well beyond them. The progression of the entire evening was supported by our sushi chef, who not only did his own job thoroughly, but also stepped in on countless occasions where our servers were nowhere to be seen. Unfortunately I didn't note his name, he is the Spanish speaking gentleman behind the bar - efficient, energetic and astute. We stopped by for Saturday night dinner with our toddler. Although not particularly full, nothing went right. Our main server was Nicole. Later we were assisted by another young blonde woman. Seating - After being seated at the bar, we quickly realized the booth behind us would be best for a toddler. As Nicole was not near, we mentioned it to the sushi chef who noticed our discomfort. He alerted Nicole who went to speak to the blonde server. Between the two of them, they decided a newly arrived family be seated at the booth instead. Nicole returned with, "I hope this (referring to our current) seating is OK. I thought not to over complicate things." We weren't offered another table. Ordering - We were left with menus long enough that our sushi chef handed us paper to note our orders. Food Service - Once the order was placed, the sushi chef quickly produced all fresh rolls. Nicole came back with drinks, then didn't return for 20 minutes. No appetizers or the kid's meal. Our toddler started to get hungry. Again noticing our increasing discomfort, the sushi chef quickly brought out our edamame. Our toddler finished the edamame, we nearly finished our meal - there's still no kid's meal. I asked Nicole about it, she didn't initially remember but said she'd check. 15 minutes later, I approached Nicole at someone else's table and reminded her a second time. Still no kid's meal. Anyone who's had a hungry toddler can probably now imagine - we're getting increasingly anxious. I approached Nicole a third time, asked her to bring some miso soup at least to hold off our toddler. She said, "Yeah, sorry. The kitchen messed up orders and forgot the kid's meal." I suggested she push the kitchen to prioritize his meal - as he's a toddler and has been waiting for an hour. At this point, instead of our kid's meal, the blonde server arrived to "soothe things". She said in a deluded tone, "I'm just here to check on stress levels, how is everyone feeling?" And upon being informed that their kitchen entirely forgot the kid's meal, she added in a perky-patronizing tone, "Wow, really? You guys are doing so great. Wow! How are avoiding a meltdown?" I asked that they please just focus on bringing food out immediately. Once the kid's meal finally did arrive, things didn't improve. Nicole avoided our table entirely. No water refills, no napkins...The blonde server suggested complementary ice cream 5 minutes after the kid's meal arrival - while we were trying to quickly feed and pacify a very hangry toddler. The ice cream was refused, at this point it was well past bedtime and we just wanted to get home. Check - Despite having been detained for so long, Nicole had to be asked twice to bring the check. No one returned to collect the credit card. I walked over to pay at the front desk. They did not offer to remove any part of our order to make up for the service. Instead the blonde server "darling"-ed me, offered no apology and kept to a delusional facade of optimism. Of course things go wrong, there are off nights, and we're all human. With the NBA playoffs on the TV, it had a fun, casual vibe. Food-wise, they were running a special--two crab cakes for $8.50 (normally $12.50)--and they were excellent. The panko crust was light and perfectly crispy. For sushi, I ordered the 911 Roll and the Alaskan #1. Both were solid, though not mind-blowing. The 911 had a nice kick from the chili oil, but the heat started to overpower the fish after a few bites, so I had to pace myself to really enjoy the flavors. My wife had the Chirashi Bowl and thought it was well worth the $28, especially raving about how fresh and creamy the uni was. I walked into Tomodachi Sushi around 7:45 PM, and the restaurant was almost completely empty only three tables were occupied. We were told to sit and handed menus, but after that, nothing. We sat there for over 30 minutes, and not a single person came by to take our order or even ask what we wanted to drink. The waitress was dancing around, and two other employees were just standing by the front desk, clearly seeing us but not doing anything. I usually don't like leaving negative reviews, but this experience was incredibly frustrating. I eventually had to walk out. I went here for lunch and had the broiled salmon with sashimi combo (Combo A+B; $16.50). The staff is pleasant and ready to serve you. The place is clean and the atmosphere is an upscale feeling. The menu did not mention the teriyaki sauce on the salmon so I asked to have that removed and they just let us keep the one on my bento box and made me a new one. The flavor was fresh and very enjoyable. I appreciate the courteous understanding about my lunch. It was taking a little time for anyone to drop off my bill so I walked up to the cash register and was told that I didn't have to do that and they would have brought it to my table. Good to know. We were seated near the bar and I believe she might be the owner and I didn't catch her name but she was an older lady and super sweet. I feel like it is a great sushi place for the area since there aren't many in Porter Ranch. Seeing a new sushi restaurant in that little vineyard made me happy. I usually like Toro but I wasn't too much of a fan this time. I feel like it didn't taste too fresh. Usually toro just melts in your mouth but this one didn't melt in my mouth.
