I honestly don't understand the hype around Shibuya Sushi. The fish itself seemed fresh and good quality, but that alone does not make great sushi. The rice was cold, packed too tightly, and tough, which really hurts the overall experience. A lot of the sushi was also overwhelmed by sauces, which covered up the flavor of the fish instead of highlighting it. Maybe this works if you like heavily dressed rolls, but it is not what I would call great sushi, especially by California standards. The wait was also frustrating, not just because it was long, but because of how poorly it seemed to be managed. It felt like regulars could walk up, say the right thing, and get seated while everyone else just stood around waiting. That kind of thing makes the experience feel pretty lousy. The 15th person on the list & didn't get to go in the first wave of people to dine in. Waited another hour to get seated. Once I ordered $600 worth of food & tip, it all came out so fast that we were forced to rush so they could make room to put our orders down at our table. I finally had it and politely asked them to slow down because it was ridiculous. The fish and food is excellent so it's worth every penny but they need to allow people to taste their food and not pack them in like sardines or make them wait so long. Shibuya is the best little hole in the wall sushi joint. When I go to other sushi places, I always find myself comparing everything I eat to the food here. Just a tip that there is usually always a wait for this place no matter the day of the week and they do not take reservations. You stop by and put your name on a list and then they will call you from there and you will wait for the glory of getting to eat the fabulous sushi. Inside, the tables are close together but that's kind of become the charm of this place and has been over the years. It's just this great little unassuming restaurant that makes really really good sushi and you gotta come and wait out your turn out at the edge of the parking lot until your name is called. That's how it works (but it's worth it). The lot is tiny tiny and you may have a rough time getting a space because this restaurant is always busy, but there's also a bit of street parking around if you needed. I actually respect that Shibuya hasn't expanded until they've been ready to. We confirmed with our waiter that Shibuya is opening up a new location nearby (finally!!) I am super excited about that because it will also have a to go side, which currently they don't have here, (but I don't mind not having to-go for for this location because it keeps things cozy and quaint inside. I like that the staff can focus on their customers needs and keep it clear and simple and make sure everyone is taken care of.) I will definitely be a repeat customer at both locations if they keep up the mom and pop ambiance and keep the quality of sushi top notch too. The fish is so so fresh here and the ingredients are all so good together the way they make it. The sushi rolls are all excellent but I especially love the spicy tuna on crispy rice. I feel like they never wait to bring it out either and everything is perfectly crunchy and good immediately once I bite into it. I always have to savor this one because it's gone so quickly because everyone at the table likes the crunchy rice so much. It's very popular. When I looked around at the tables, pretty much everyone had a spicy tuna on crispy rice on their table too which made me chuckle. It really is that good! We always ask for the black cod here even when it's not really on the menu. It's one of my favorite fish to eat and the way they cook it and flavor it melts in my mouth every time. There was a line already at 4:30PM so I recommend arriving before opening and putting your name down and walking to the Commons for some steps and to pass time. We waited an hour and got seated in a small table that was more for 2 people but we made it work for 4 people. The service was good, we asked for spicy mayo, eel sauce, and extra ginger on the side and they were quick with the food coming out. We got a good amount of food to try and everything was fresh and tasty! Good Lord, I have forgotten how fantastic Shibuya is with the freshest sushi located in an L-shaped strip mall across from the Commons in Calabasas. Can I give this joint 5 1/2 stars? A small L shaped sushi bar with about five tables is all that graces the interior of this spectacular sushi bar that attracts people from miles away. When my wife and I owned a restaurant in Calabasas, we were regular customers trying whatever owner Mark and his four SUSHI chefs could offer. The Columbia river and copper River wild salmon which was seasonal was so good that one never wanted to have any other salmon from any other place. Because I was celiac, in the early days I brought in my own gluten-free soy sauce and would leave it for customers if there were any that had my affliction. They modified a couple dishes for me such as softshell crab roll with avocado and onion, which they prepared instead of in flour with cornstarch. When I first ordered it, everybody at the sushi bar demanded to have it my way, which is so much tastier than having a large amount of deep fried batter. After working at the Calabasas pumpkin festival, I was hungry and I knew it would be a long drive home, so I pulled into the small parking lot and waited outside to put my name on a clipboard. When they open at 5 o'clock the place immediately fills up and you have to wait if you are there after 5 o'clock for the first shift to finish eating approximately an hour to an hour and a half later and this proceeds the entire evening. This place is so popular, I have met people as far away from Orange County who have driven to this small sushi bar in the West Valley. Mark over the years, had many opportunities to expand the restaurant to the store next to it or to open up another restaurant, and in fact, I was in the restaurant when a wealthy man offered to bankroll Mark on the spot with a restaurant in Santa Monica. Mark refused to open another or expand and kept his eye on the prize: a fabulous small local sushi place that serves the finest sushi. Mark has recently retired but that has not diminished the excellence of this joint. I did not realize that they now open the door at 4:30 to allow those in the know to put their name on the clipboard and then wait outside until the restaurant opens with eight or nine people breathlessly waiting like a group of puppies at the front door ready to go for a walk. When I realized at 4:50pm that the door was open, I went in and there were already many people on the list. Fortunately for me, the runner remembered me came over and said is it just you and he looked at me saying that he would make sure I got in. The woman and hostess at the front who rules the clipboard also remembered me from years back, and when they finally blessedly opened the front door a crack and the hostess shouted the roll call, I got in at 5 o'clock at the sushi bar in front of the only one of four sushi chefs who is still there from when I last and many times dined at this restaurant. I knew what I wanted: two pieces of the freshest salmon sushi, spicy tuna with rice cakes, and soft shell crab roll with avocado made with cornstarch instead of flour. They even carry gluten-free soy sauce so I was in heaven starting with the complementary sunomono and hot green tea and then ate each course slowly, savoring each bite, as it was just as good as I remembered with the flavors bursting forth as they should. I thanked my sushi chef with my limited Japanese as well as the hostess and the very kind runner who used to bring me my gluten-free soy sauce before I sat down and knew the drinks that my family would order before we ordered them. Food here is always worth the wait! I love getting the salmon rolls and nigiri. Something I don't see a lot of people talk about is the baked snow crab hand roll. It comes out hot and stuffed with crab! It can feel a bit tight at the bar depending on who you're sitting next to but I enjoy watching all the madness that goes down behind the bar/kitchen. I do wish the sushi chefs were a bit nicer. Most of them are great but a few of them can be moody. Shibuya's food is great, but their waiting system is a total failure of integrity. A waitlist should be a fair contract with the customer, but here, it's all a lie. We arrived at 2:45 PM for the 3:00 PM list and were told to return for the 6:00 PM second seating as we barely missed the cut off. Not being locals, we waited in front for 3 hours. When our time came, we watched the staff allow "VIP" groups and friends of employees to skip the line entirely. We weren't seated until 6:40pm. I went to the bathroom and was disappointed to find more VIP groups camped out in the back, ready to slide into the next available seating. It is misleading and disrespectful to run a secondary, secret line for insiders while families and couples follow the rules outside. On a day like Valentine's Day, choosing favoritism over the integrity of your own system is a terrible look. I feel played and lied to on a special day I planned to share with my girlfriend. Management would have been better off shutting down for the holiday to serve their friends privately. Ultimately, it's clear the waitlist is just a tool to fill seats around their VIP parties and maximize profits using the people they make wait for hours. I have a love/hate relationship with this place. The fish is great, the rolls are delicious - but the wait, the sitting on top of other people, the very mediocre service if you are not a celebrity or a daily regular - makes me not want to return. If you can, show up during the week at lunch time. There still may be a wait (albeit shorter than at dinner), but it will be worth it. The spicy tuna on crispy rice is famous here for good reason. When my absolute favorite sushi spot closed in Tarzana - Ichiban Kan, this was the closest I could get to the same types of rolls, flavors, and freshness. I do hate the hierarchy here though. You could have waited 2 hours for a table, and some D list celebrity will just walk right up and ask how long the wait is to be seated immediately. Once you do finally get seated - they'll smush you between people - adding chairs to an already full sushi bar so you are sitting awkwardly angled towards your party playing an arm dance with the person sitting next to you OR it'll be musical chairs and everyone in the whole restaurant has to stand up and move around so that you can physically reach your table. I know the whole shtick is being exclusive but most of the time the allure is not strong enough to get me to come back - there's better fish elsewhere. First off, plenty of parking on Sunday. After a 20 min wait, we were seated but definitely would've preferred the sushi bar. Other than that the sushi was amazing! We dined at the sushi bar and wow I was blown away by the experience. The chefs were so kind and took such good care of us, always asking our preferences of seaweed vs soy paper, keeping us well stocked on ginger and of course turning out food at record speed. It is a bit of a smaller spot so everything you've heard about the lines are true but it is so worth it! My favorites were their Live Scallop sushi and the Garlic Butter Shrimp roll but of course you can't go wrong with their classic Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice and Shibuya House roll! read more

Shibuya in Calabasas $26.50 for the 911 roll is not worth it and without flavor. I do not remember Shibuya having such expensive rolls and the quality is not as great anymore which is what happens in most restaurants. It is now more expensive and less quality. After an expensive bill there is the 20 % tip. $ 45 dollars ! I could have bought almost two combos at Erewhon all organic and there is no tip and Erewhon is expensive. We were also confined to a small table with the door opening to my back and it was cold. To resume not comfy expensive and the quality has gone down.
