Bluefin Toro and Akami tuna

5+ stars, enjoyed my first visit here. A chill space once you step in from the busy Roosevelt Ave., just under the 7 train line. We were here on Mother's Day (reservation a must), and was seated within minutes of our arrival. Every staff member was welcoming. The dining room was pretty packed, just past the bar. The space is cozy and has warm lighting. The tables and banquettes provide for optimal seating no matter the size of your group. Like the name, you'll enjoy "together" wherever you sit. Way in the back, there is counter seating where you can dine and watch the sushi chefs at work. Interestingly, this Japanese restaurant does not serve a la carte sushi and sashimi. They are mainly a DIY hand roll spot but also serves "bowl" entrees and plenty of starters if you just want to nosh on appetizers. Great spot for drinking as well as I noticed yuzu beer and a signature Mocktail in addition to other sake options. My eyes were definitely bigger than my stomach on this visit, and with 3 of us, we had an opportunity to try a selection of things. Onto the food - everything was shareable and on the smaller side but they were all great to sample. The sushi options and seafood were magnificent - super fresh and very well prepared. Starters: - Ume takowasa - raw fine pieces of octopus. some were tender and pliable but there were a few that were too firm to the point I didn't want to finish. Mixed reviews on this. - Goma hamachi - excellent app - super smoky and the flavor of the sesame sauce was outstanding - Misozuke cream cheese - 2 day miso marinated cream cheese served with nori. Just yum! Rich and decadent but fun to eat. - tuna special which was the closest thing to a sashimi style dish. Two kinds of sliced tuna served sashimi style. Bluefin Toro (fatty) and Akami (lean). Super appetizing and fresh. Entrees - perfect portion of rice and proteins: Hubby chose the three make your own hand rolls: salmon, uni, and spicy tuna. All of the fishes were well prepped and delicious. The nori and sauce on the side. I had the Chirashi bowl, which contained bluefin tuna, salmon, hamachi, scallop, chutoro and ikura. So good. I couldn't stop eating! To finish the meal, we ordered the Hojicha Signature Parfait. A bowl of goodies, think ice cream, cornflakes, sweet red beans, whipped cream and mochi. All served with strawberries and kuromitsu syrup. Something for everyone. I'm itching to return to try the rest of the menu! This was a phenomenal dinner and I cannot wait to bring my peeps.

Thai + Japanese A favorite restaurant Sammuk in Queens is now gone and replaced with a totally new restaurant concept. The same owners partnered with a Japanese friend and reopened as Tomoni. We somehow guessed because the staff is the same as Sammuk so we asked and got a confirmation that this new restaurant is from the same group. It's a beautiful renovation that looks like I was transported to the fancy parts of Brooklyn --- very gentried, classy lighting and general vibes but still has that unmistakable welcoming and friendly Queens feel. It has certainly leveled up as a neighborhood restaurant. I love the menu options. My favorites were Una-Tama and the hojicha parfait. Congratulations, @tomoninyc ! Love the food and the new space. #curious_eater #tomoninyc

Overall we had a really good experience at Tomoni for Mother's Day dinner. The restaurant itself is beautiful, clean, and has a really nice atmosphere. The service was attentive throughout the meal and the staff was friendly. The food was fresh, flavorful, and well prepared. We especially enjoyed the karaage, goma hamachi, and sake selection. That being said, it is definitely on the pricier side for the neighborhood. I personally didn't mind paying more because the food and experience were good, but I do wish they had more nigiri options on the menu. One thing that did bother us was that the waitress dropped the check before we were actually finished. We still had half a bottle of sake left on the table, so it felt a little premature. Then when my husband ordered another beer afterward, we ended up having to open/pay another check. It just disrupted the flow of the dinner a bit and felt unnecessary. Overall though, we still enjoyed our meal and would come back again.

Yeah honestly I thought the place looked beautiful and I'm always struggling with Japanese food, we went a few weeks ago and I really appreciated how nice the staff were this review is 100% not concerning them but the food itself. I feel like it was just overpriced for what you got if that makes sense? Portions weren't that great for a party of four we definitely left hungry for $80 per person. It kinda felt like an instagram spot that's getting inflated as opposed to a place I'd tell my friends about if that makes sense? Maybe it was an off day but the don we ordered had every ingredient taste the same, it was very visually appealing but we couldn't pick apart flavors at all. Would I go back? Maybe honestly I think everywhere deserves a second chance and they're just opening. But I wouldn't buy into the influencer videos I'd try it yourself and give your opinion. Just keep in mind it's more about the value of what we got for the price than anything else. Def not somewhere you'd go every week more so special occasions if you enjoy the food.

We went to Tomoni for my birthday because recently a few people have raved about this space from the Eat Something New in Queens group. We went on a Tuesday night so it was pretty empty except a table that came before us but as we were eating more people came in so two more tables got filled up. The recommendations that we got was the homemade cheese, the yellowtail for appetizers. Hubby and I both got a chirashi each and we ordered the Uni as well to share. We also had some sake to go with our meal. We throughly enjoyed the cheese appetizer to our surprise! It was so delicious! Definitely worth getting it. The chirashi and Uni entrees were delicious but what stood out for us too was the rice! It didn't look like white but brown rice which I actually like better! The seasoning in the sushi rice was phenomenal! Since it was my birthday and because they asked they actually gave us a mango & ube mochi ice cream. OMG the flavors are real fruit and freshly made. Definitely would love to come back! The price was about $120 pp with alcohol so definitely a treat and not a regular place to eat at but definitely wouldn't mind coming back for special occasions.

The concept is so needed in this neighborhood and felt like a great addition as the menu stood out and there aren't many Japanese izakaya style restaurants in Queens. We went for a late dinner around 11pm and were advised that we can only order from the late menu as the sushi bar was closed. The appetizers were on the small side but expected. We thought the hamachi collar was well seasoned and very good. We then waited over 20 minutes for our entree and the staff were apologetic about the wait so offered dessert for the trouble which we also waited for over 20 minutes for this said dessert. This became a very long dinner, over 1.5 hours. There were many staff that came to check on us but the pace was off and it felt like our food was forgotten about or not sent to the table who ordered the dishes first. A table that came in 15 minutes after us got the same eel entree we ordered before we did. It felt slow and disorganized. I hope they work on this and can improve.

I've been seeing the viral eel omelette don in Japan and can't believe you can get it in NYC now!! Tomoni just opened in Woodside, Queens with a cozy izakaya vibe, and the sashimi quality is honestly on par with (if not better than) some omakase spots. We went on a weekday night and the restaurant was busy! Service was still very warm and attentive. Highly recommend getting a res. *Una Tama $39 * It was stacked with an extra-long grilled eel and a fat piece of japanese omelette over a bed of rice. The tamagoyaki went so well with the unagi. The eel had a nice charcoal-grilled aroma and a soy glazed exterior, with crispy charred edges and a tender center. It was already well seasoned, but they give you a mini brush so you can add more sweet soy sauce if you want, so it never gets too salty. *Sanshoku $36 ** It was beautifully arranged with bluefin tuna, salmon, and yellowtail. The raw egg yolk made the chirashi extra creamy, and the salty pop from the ikura tied everything together. I didn't even need any soy sauce! *Yakiniku $25 ** I wasn't expecting much from a gyudon at first, but I WAS SO WRONG. The beef had a smoky jbbq aroma, and the rice soaked up all the yakiniku sauce and the runny onsen egg. *Goma Hamachi $14 ** We also got a couple of their most recommended apps to share. The goma hamachi was seriously out of this world. They marinated the yellowtail with sesame sauce. But a bit pricey for just four slices. *Tsukune $9 * The tsukune (chicken meatball) was delicious, especially dipped in the raw egg yolk. *Geso Kara $14 The fried squid eggs were a solid snack with mayo on the side. The squid was meaty with a thin fried batter, but nothing mind-blowing. *Hojicha Parfait $15 ** It came with a generous scoop of hojicha ice cream, topped with kinako powder, red beans, kuromitsu syrup, mochi, matcha warabimochi, and strawberries. I devoured the whole parfait by myself. Definitely save room for dessert!

Chirashi

Great new Japanese restaurant. All the dishes were pretty good, best was the una tama donburi MUST GET! The unagi was huge and tender. Chirashi was pretty good too, tho some cuts were better than others (lean tuna was ok but toro, salmon, and scallop was really good). I would definitely go back again! Affordable and good :D

Went with a party of 4 and at a glance the place was spotless & effortlessly beautiful!! The little details from the utensils, plates, cups and lighting were astounding. We ordered the chirasu, salmon bowl, yakiniku bowl and shenshoku. The fish was fresh, melts in your mouth like butter. The raw egg on top made the fish more creamy and delicious. The salmon--- jeez was amazing!! It was most likely the best cuts I have ever had here in New York. The service was attentive, quick & accommodating. We wanted the Ebi-tama (eel) however was told they didn't have it. We later saw another table got it and it made us wonder why we were told otherwise. After confirmation with a server it was because the eel had to marinated for 20 minutes. We just wish there was a more clear heads up, otherwise we would have waited and gotten it. I can't wait to see how well this restaurant will continue to flourish.

Tori Avo

Its a super cute place in Woodside! All the dishes were delicious but the portions were small. I'd recommend the whole eel, sanshoku, tori avo!

What a great addition to Queens! The ambiance was warm and cozy, and everyone was so welcoming and attentive. We ordered a few things to share. The chirashi was amazing. It was super fresh, and the sushi rice was perfect. I'll definitely come back to try their other dishes.

Cuisine: 8 Service: 8 Decor: 8 Value: 5 Overall: 8 Queens has always lacked quality Japanese cuisine, hence there was genuine excitement when I heard about this restaurant opening a few weeks ago. What I heard was how this shop exceeds what I should expect from a local Japanese restaurant and therefore I have been here several times over the last two weeks to make my personal conclusions. Tasting a good portion of the menu, here are my thoughts on each item. I will provided summary at the end of this review if you wanna skip this portion. Shimesaba Tartare (8.5/10) - If you are a fan of Mackerel, then you must order this dish. It has very well balanced flavors with a strong emphasis on rice vinegar. I wish they provided more toast. Also, it would be nice if the toast was slightly more crispy. Negi Shio Tofu (8/10) - A surprise hit for me. I really enjoyed the texture of the creamy tofu and the combination of flavors from the amazing sauce. Shirasu Salad (8/10) - Recommended by the hostess as one of her two favorite appetizers, we decided to give it a try. Notes of bitterness from the arugula matches so well with the slightly sweet and tasty sauce. The cream cheese somehow worked well too. Misozuke Cream Cheese (8/10) - This was another restaurant recommendation and I had to try it because of how odd it sounded. Though the portion size is insanely small, the dish was quite delicious. Geso Kara (7.5/10) - If you like fried squid legs, this is right up your alley. I would prefer a bit more crunch, but it was fried well. Hamachi Kama (7/10) - Unfortunately, the collar we received was undercooked. I'll chalk that up to rookie mistake, but what we had tasted was delicious. Sanshoku (8/10) - You will hear me repeat that the rice is amazing for all the donburi options. I particularly enjoyed the raw egg adding extra flavor to the dish. However, the sashimi was just decent. Una-Tama (8.5/10) - Huge portion, good but nothing really special about the eel compared to what I experienced many times in Japan. Wish there was a crispier skin. Omelette is just average too. Yet, the eel sauce on that wonderful rice elevates the dish to one of the best in the city. Chirashi (8.5/10) - If you like sashimi on top of great sushi rice, then this option is for you. I would have liked a sweeter scallop or higher quality bluefin tuna, but once again, the rice makes everything better. A5 Miyazaki Wagyu (6.5/10) - With the accompanying sauce, the rice may have been the tastiest of the donburi options. However, I could barely taste the thinly sliced beef. Definitely not worth the price. Uni Negotoro Ikura (8/10) - This handroll donburi was good, but somewhat of a letdown because it should be divine. It lacked the richness I want from good quality chopped toro, as well as the creamy and sweetness from better uni. Vanilla Parfait (7.5/10) - $15 for two small scoops of ice cream with some toppings and a matcha sauce just seems too pricey for this neighborhood. The cornflakes added a nice touch, but the price! If you read this far, then you can tell that I am in love with the rice that Tomoni makes with all of their donburi items. It is their number one asset by far. I dare say that their rice rival some of the top Japanese restaurants in NYC. However, the food comes at Manhattan prices and not everything is worth that extra spend. If you find specific dishes you don't mind splurging on once in a while, then this spot will save you a trip to the city. It does have nice decor and excellent service. Unfortunately for me, Tomoni does not reach 5 star status because its fantastic rice could only cover up so much. There are still flaws in their food offerings that I pray they address. Furthermore, the price is slightly too high for what you receive, especially in Queens. Lastly, considering we have spent few hundred dollars each time we have been there, charging us for a couple extra pieces of toast and seaweed feels a bit lowbrow for a restaurant aiming for a high paying clientele.

The second time, we had to deal with stupid bouncers or security guards before being let into their bar/pub. That's a huge turnoff for me, and it's only worth it for strip clubs and concerts. Sweet Afton is a hip Irish-style pub known for its craft cocktails, extensive beer selection, and upscale pub fare. It has a cozy interior with exposed brick and a sought-after outdoor garden area that is enclosed in the winter.  A few of their menu items include "Astoria's best burger" (using Pat LaFrieda beef), the Dirty Pickle Martini (featuring McClure's pickle juice), and beer-battered fried pickles. I learned that they have a sister pub called the Bonnie in Ditmars, which I have been to and had a great time. Last Saturday I came back for a third time. I was surprised at how things had changed; much more laid-back, with good customer service, good vibes, and one of the most delicious bar burgers I have ever eaten, with a side salad, in any pub or establishment in Queens. Furthermore, Sweet Afron had some nice alternatives to bear and larger, and I selected a cider instead. First, I was offered a sip, and then, upon my approval, a full glass of cider. In conclusion, I do plan to return!
