The food here was superb though and I will definitely come back to try the seafood specialties!! We had kimchi mandus (dumplings), pork bone soup, and a seafood pancake. The seafood pancake was huge and full of flavorful chunky pieces of seafood- certainly the best one I've ever had. You can tell this spot takes their seafood seriously. I also enjoyed the crunchy mandus and smoky soup. I thought the vibe of the place was cute and dimly lit- it would be a good date spot. Also, our servers were all fast and quite friendly. I was really happy to see that they've updated the tower menu. I've mentioned before (every time I've gone) that the meal could use a lighter soup option, something warm but not too filling, like a miso soup rather than the heavier army stew, especially during colder weather. I've gotten takeout when they were just selling out of their home kitchen so I was super excited to eat-in at their restaurant. There were 4 of us and we ordered the jokbal and Memil noodle appetizer. It was delicious. The spicy sauce on the noodles helped to cut through the fattiness of the jokbal. One person in our party was allergic to shellfish so he got the salmon rice bowl and he said it was delicious and very filling. The other three of us shared the seafood tower which included a little bit of everything. It also included a stew (not pictured). I love their marinated Argentinian red shrimp and their spicy crabs, but everything was delicious. The soy sauce crabs had eggs and all the crabs were full of meat. We actually struggled to finish the entire tower towards the end. Also ordered some of their in-house sikhye and other drinks and everything went together so well with the food. It was one of my friends first time here so we decided to get the seafood tower for some variety which was $180. I would've skipped this and just got regular orders of the scallop, red shrimp, and gunsan crab. The regular white shrimp, abalone, salmon could be skipped IMO. I thought the spicy crab tasted a bit better this time but I still prefer the soy, as the flavor comes through more vs just spice! The congee that came with this was also not hot - it was luke warm when it came out. We also got the fried calamari and it was crispy and delish! The pouch drinks weren't bad either. The one thing I'd skip entirely is the gotge haemul jungol. Size wise it wasn't super big but it wasn't worth the price ($44). The quality of the crab was bad - super mushy and not fresh tasting. This was probably top 5 spots I've been wanting to try since moving to NY. We started off with drinks (sikhye was fantastic) & pork belly kimchi pancakes. The pancakes were absolutely one of my favorite bites of the night - SO crisp, while maintaining that fluffy texture inside. However the soybean soup that came with the seafood tower was completely bland. The best item of the night was the tiny portion of abalone congee. Definitely better with rice. I preferred the spicy one. I do prefer the premium gunsan crab over the blue crab. You can use disposable gloves for the crab and take them off when eating rice but it becomes a hassle switching back and forth. The rice wine is overpriced but it's to be expected at a restaurant. Everyone and their mothers recommended Rice Thief, and I love soy-marinated raw crabs, so I knew I had to go. Two of my college friends and I got a reservation for lunch this past Saturday the day before without issues. When we arrived, it wasn't very packed, and we didn't wait very long before we got our food. We were given disposable aprons and gloves to enjoy our food. One of my friends and I shared the following which we really enjoyed together. We weren't full, but satisfied after all the food. BLUE CRAB (3) - 28 The crabs were pretty small and didn't have a lot of meat. Also, they didn't give us crab leg crackers, and I wasn't going to risk chipping a tooth or two to bite down on the claws. However, I enjoyed the soy marinade and the creaminess of raw crab. Most of the meat was in the body, but there was quite a bit in the cartilage (the area between body and claws) too. I honestly could have eaten at least two of these, but my friend enjoyed the crabs more than I did, so she had two of the bodies. WILD RED ARGENTINE SHRIMP (3) - 18 The red shrimp was incredibly juicy, meaty, and creamy. Surprisingly, I enjoyed it more than the crab because of it. I ate everything, including the head and brains. The soy marinade was perfect. I ended up eating two of these. I could probably order six of these just for myself. RICE THIEF BOWL - 8 The rice came in a small plate (Sad! I was expecting more rice for how much each one was) with lots of different toppings: seaweed salad, roasted seaweed, masago, daikon, and a bit of sesame seeds. I was told to mix up the toppings thoroughly before dropping a spoonful or two into the body of the crab, and mix the rice with the marinaded crab meat. That was fantastic. It went well with both the crab and shrimp. The Rice Thief bowl is pricy but definitely worth it. I'd pay extra for this over white rice. HOMEMADE FRIED BEEF MANDOO (4) - 14 We ordered this to share in case the above was not enough food. The beef mandoo was thick and fried nicely, but nothing out of the ordinary. The place was packed considering it was also storming and flooding outside so we were excited for our food. We ordered their tower as well as a kimchi fried rice to share between three of us. We waited over 20 minutes for food of any sort to show up and a total of 40 minutes for the fried rice to show up. The tower came with both spicy and non spicy marinated crabs, two types of marinated shrimp, marinated salmon, abalone, and scallops. It also came with rice topped with uni, a steamed egg, and a small stew. Their marinated red sheiml, salmon, abalone, and scallops were definitely the star of the show! Not overly seasoned and fishy/salty tasting. The marinated crab was good but the texture and flavor ended up being very overwhelming after a few bites. It would've been nice for some flavor and texture contrast. Two bowls of white rice and some nori was provided however the nori was stale and didn't help with the texture or flavor of the crab. I was at this rather unique Korean restaurant a couple of months ago with a large group. They specialize in gejang/게장, or in other words, raw marinated seafood Korean style, which is marinated in either soy sauce or gochujang. The staff was pretty friendly, and the place inside was quite casual and slightly loud, but not too overbearing. To drink, I had a sikhye/식혜, which is either available in the traditional style with just fermented rice for $6, or also with pumpkin for $8. It was less sweet than the canned variety I have had before, and it was a nice touch to top it with a little piece of jujube/red date and some pine nuts. A few others ordered their cocktail pouches, with a couple of people liking the Open Sesame for $15, and another person or two also enjoying the $14 Pear with Me. They gave us some banchan consisting of broccoli with a bit of sesame as well as a slightly fermented kimchi, which was decent. The first thing that arrived was something I can't eat, which was the Seafood Pancake/Haemul Pajeon/해물파전 for $24 listed as our classic Korean Style seafood pancake, crispy fried batter, squid, shrimp, clam & scallion and paired with our home style soy sauce dip. It was cut up into eight pieces, and it seemed like there was plenty of seafood inside. I unfortunately have a cephalopod allergy, so squid is a no-go, but the rest enjoyed it. The next to arrive was one of their signatures, the Soy Platter for $89 with 6 soy crabs, 6 white shrimp, 4 red shrimp, and 3 abalone, with the host ordering extra of the blue crabs so everyone could have one. The platters come with rice and seaweed, but we upgraded to the Rice Thief Bowl, which is $5 with the platters or $8 normally, which has some masago, wakame, daikon, roasted seaweed & sesame seed along with the rice, which was very tasty, from the bit I could taste. The platter was as per the price point, quite massive, and I think two or three people could eat it as a main and leave comfortably full with another appetizer or something. The crabs had a good amount of roe and were soft enough in most places to bite and eat the delicious slightly sweet and salty meat inside. However, my preference was surprisingly the shrimp as I liked the texture more, and it was less of a hassle with the red shrimp being stronger flavored. The abalone had good texture as well, and overall, we all enjoyed this a lot. As this is a raw seafood place primarily, the other two $25 dishes were fine. The better of the two was the Beef Brisket DwenJang Jigae with thinly sliced beef brisket, fermented soybean miso soup, tofu, slightly spicy anchovy broth, assorted mushrooms, jalapeno, and squash. The broth had a nice fermented flavor with some funk and plenty of pretty tender beef. The portion size was also adequate for the price point. The Spicy Pork Belly for $25 with sauteed spicy pork, Korean sweet & spicy sauce, onion, rice cake, and jalapeno was alright. It was well portioned, though I found the meat not as tender as some other spots. However, the sauce was solid, and I can imagine the spicy crabs having a good kick of flavor as well, and I wouldn't mind having that instead of the soy version next time. I wouldn't mind going back here at all, as overall, I liked the food a lot. Warm, hearty, plenty of roasted sesame oil flavor and umami. This was our favorite part of the meal. The soy platter was substantial, refreshing, and had plenty of variety (and portion) for two. Came here with a party of 4 and this did exceed expectations! I never had raw marinated crab before so I was a bit scared coming in. We got a soy platter which I think would perfectly serve 3 people fully. Since we had four, we also got a congee to split. They were also nice to provide an egg omelet app on the house and they provided a delicious sauce mix for the seafood! Marinated crab - I loved this. They give each crab split in 2 (the crab belly or apron which was everyone's favorite and the legs part which I enjoyed a lot but required more work to eat). The soy flavor was great. Red shrimp - my friends liked this but I liked the crab more. I think it just depends on personal preference because I don't love raw shrimp. When I visited this place last weekend, I was truly impressed that the staff was able to leave me with nothing positive to say about the service -- they were forgetful of items we ordered including multiple hot barley teas; needed to be prompted to acquire gloves, napkins, and other instruments to eat the seafood in a civilized manner, which was not the case for other guests there; and were excruciatingly slow in service even though the restaurant itself was not packed and none of the items we ordered needed to be cooked. As a result, it should not be surprising to hear that the food quality is poor both in terms of freshness, flavor development, and follow through in serving the dish in an easy to consume way. Would not recommend. (Blue Crab: D) - I love the large presence of crab roe, which is so comforting to consume with rice. However, the rest of the crab only gave primary of soy and shell shards on my palette, when there is so much missed opportunity for flavor development here. This place is hidden in the neighborhood. There are plenty of street parking spaces. I believe I saw EV charging station nearby (please check). The crab was fresh but flavor was a bit overpowering with oil and sugar, making it a little hard to enjoy the taste of crab. Blue crab was normal blue crab size filled with either soy or spicy sauce. While this was fun, it does require some work to get little meats out of the shells. Definitely recommend to eat with rice as flavor is strong. The place was a bit small with cramped seating. The small table can barely handle two dishes at a time. Atmosphere was loud. However the service was great and helpful. My only wish is if the servers knew korean name of dishes. Service was friendly. Food is pretty good since it's pretty much one of the few raw marinated crab places in NYC, if anyone knows a better spot please message me! I prefer the Korean crab over the Maine blue crab because of their size and their much softer shell making it easier to squeeze and eat. Korean crab also has more roe, unfortunately this place did not have that available when I went (this happened the first time I went as well). They do serve the spicy marinade with the Korea crabs, my guess is because it preserves better than the soy marinade. The restaurant was very cute, and small. I remember learning about the hype of Rice Thief even before they opened their first brick-and-mortar storefront, so I definitely had high expectations coming in. And happy to say, it was well worth the anticipation. For folks who might not like raw marinated crabs/seafood, they do have a lot of cooked food options. For the 6 of us, we ordered the Gunsan Platter, Half and Half Platter, jokbal + memil, beef brisket doenjang jjigae, and their bbq ribeye. The seafood was fresh and marinated well. I personally enjoy spicy raw crabs over the soy marinated version, but both were so good! I also like that the soy marinated crabs weren't too salty.
