Sometimes you find a roadside gem while traveling, the line was long and there were lots of work trucks and semi's looped in back. A telltale sign that you're in the right place for. Good bite. We placed our order (to be honest I failed on some Pics here... we got a cheese dog, a chili dog, and a regular dog... all were served on that classic New England bun (I'm a Buffalo NY guy ) and weren't sahlens but these were off the bun big and the only wish is grilled not grill top and an order of fries and cheese. They all came out quick, which was a huge plus and a sign that the kitchen team is a well oiled machine. But all the hot dogs delivered solid bite. Not a Complaint to be had. The fries were hot, the cheese was a touch spicy , the kids chicken bites were super crispy and the burger was well done. The roadside tent was the perfect spot for us travelers to enjoy this meal as well. I'd definitely make a stop again next time I'm passing through. read more

Stopped for a snack on a blustery day in June. Many choices, a perfect hot dog w/ a topping of baked beans. A delightful pulled pork sandwich and lovely homemade fries. Unfortunately the tuna sandwich on a hotdog roll was impossible to pick up. The bread was flattened by very fresh, lovely ingredients, crisp lettuce, vibrant tomato large portion of albacore tuna salad (with onion). No way to pick up and eat and one would have to go back to the counter to ask for utensils. A gentler hand in creating this sandwich would be appreciated. 3.5 rounded up. The vibe here is cute, fun, and very chill. Definitely has the old school carnival food trailer vibe. And it totally works The food here is decent but basic. I got a hot dog with mustard and relish. The hot dogs are extra long and the buns are soft and fluffy. But these aren't like, 'fresh from a bonfire' type of dogs. They're still pink with no grill marks so clearly they aren't held over a fire. The fries were fluffy and delicious. But I got cheese fries and it was just the artificial/fake 'nacho' cheese you get at the movie theater or at a concession stand. Thankfully the cheese comes separate so I just tossed the big container and ate the fries alone. A much better choice! I got a soft serve vanilla cone afterwards and it was really tasty. I expected it to be bland but it really was quite a treat. (Go for the kids size if you're fairly full. They're large servings, imo) There are four picnic tables under a big tent which was perfect to spend time outside while also not getting scorched from the sun. It also protected us from a rain storm that blew in unannounced. This place is cute. The aesthetic is fun and is a 'novelty' type place for me. Ever order a chili dog, and when you open the wrapper wonder where the chili is? This happened to me a couple of days ago - ordered a chili dog with cheese, expecting it to be tasty, at the very least. The hot dog was topped with melted cheese, most of which was stuck to the wrapper paper --- where was the chili? It was UNDER the hot dog, and to be truthful - it looked more like someone had wiped the chili spoon on the bun than actually spooned chili onto it. WHERE IS THE CHILI??? On their board there was a sign for a mac & cheese chili dog - I'm glad I didn't order that because if the chili was so skimpy on a chili dog- I'd hate to think of how little mac & cheese there could have been. This place is a joke. If you call yourself a hotdog shack you should have a dog that's cooked to perfection whether steamed, boiled or fried. And, it should be on bun that is steamed or grilled properly. This joint has neither. Blah, Blah and Blah - that sums up their dogs. There is no heart or soul to what they serve. Furthermore, this mundane fair does not come cheap. I've had better dogs for a buck from a steamer in a gas station. To add insult to injury, they had a Specials Board offering "Lazy Pierogi" at $3.50 for a 1/2 pint. (Sounds good, right?) Well, what they served was a 1 cup styrofoam container half filled with dried out bowtie noodles with a little bit of chopped sauerkraut - Yech! Do you like messy tables, rude staff and crappy overpriced food? If so then Tom's is the place for you. This hotdog stand has gone down hill considerably- what used to be a favorite stop for my family is now a place we will avoid. My husbands pulled pork sandwich was dry- which is an indicator that it's old. My hotdog was okay, the bun was wet, which was gross. We ordered sundaes, mine was incorrect and when my husband asked them to fix it- the owner argued with him about it.... seriously? Then in some weird retaliation when they fixed it, rather than topping my sundae with strawberries which is what we paid for, it was the gross juice from the bottom of the jar with 3 strawberry pieces. Not a great business model considering 5Js isn't far away and had a much better atmosphere, staff and food. read more

It has been a while since I have been to Tom's Hot Dog, and I almost forgot how much I love this place! The dogs from this little roadside stand are incredible, and they have such a great selection of hot dog options. Every time we go to this shop I have to buy one of their California Dogs. This hot dog topped with cream cheese and roasted red peppers is delicious and my favorite option. I also think that this food stand has great French fries and onion rings. Them staff here is always polite and quick. Even when the shop is packed, which tends to be often, the staff get you in and out the door quickly. I also really love the fact that they now have an indoor seating area and are open all year long. I can't wait to go back and stuff my face with great food for a great price! read more

Not at all what it used to be. My kids took one bite of their hot dogs then tossed them...they thought they were gross. They were just strangely bland and flavorless. Same deal with the ice cream. The Polish food is just plain awful. I'm Polish and cook traditional recipes often so I'm always eager to try another's take on a dish. These were just plain bad. If these were somebody's Grandma's recipes then she was just a lousey cook...bless her little heart! Tuna macaroni salad was quite nice! Clam chowder would have been good if the flavor of celery wasn't so over powering. It was the predominant flavor. The chili was homemade (they used Hormel chili for the hot dogs). The smoke flavor was overdone as everyone in our car commented on how they all could smell it the moment I opened the container. The peppers and onions were unpleasant as the pieces were large and mushy in the chili. It could be good if more attention was paid to the amount of ingredients and preparation. We stopped at Tom's today just off Rte 91 in Whately Mass. on rte 5 . This was our first time here from a drive by the Mohawk trail . I ordered a chili dog $3.75 , and my wife ordered a chili burger . The friendly order taker asked if she wanted anything on it , said yes and and it came with onion, lettuce tomato slice and pickle all for $12.04 including tax . Chili on the dog was tasty and both sandwiches were a little sloppy while eating them . They arrived quickly in wax paper and in a bag . Several picnic tables under tents . There was a large menu from chicken sandwiches, burgers, with several variations , chili and 12 inch subs . Reasonable prices quality of food was good, though I thought the hotdog a little bland but I believe the chili had a hand in it . A spartan roadside stand , good prices and a continuous line of customers for midweek , midday . We plan to stop again in the future the next time we swing by and try something else! read more

3 long dogs for under $10? Bargain city! This place was recommended in my hot dog opinion thread so I knew we had to go. They call their dogs "long dogs" for good reason. These are long dogs and long buns. Natural casing but not too spicy. Overall a good beefy flavor. I got two dogs, one just yellow mustard and sweet relish and the kraut special: a long dog with bacon, sauerkraut, cheese and brown mustard. Although I do prefer my dogs grilled, these were still good because of the natural casing and the flavor of the dog. They had that wonderful snap. I didn't ask but would have to say that due to the length of the dogs, the buns must be specially made. The kraut dog was a little slippery with the cheese and kraut, but I managed. The bacon under the dog was very crisp and a nice addition. I might have added just a titch more mustard but it really was good. The mustard/relish dog is my barometer and I use that to compare. It held up well. The BF gets his dog "undressed", just the dog on the bun, plain. He also enjoyed his dog even though he's not as big a hot dog freak as I am. Overall a wonderful pit stop, I'd definitely come again when I am in the area! read more

Tom's is a Valley staple, has been around for as long as I can remember. Today I was out on the bike, and decided to try them for the first time. First thing, the seating. The building seems really big, but they have only 2 indoor picnic tables. Which is fine during the summer, or nice weather, but if it's a lousy day be prepared to eat sloppy dogs in your car. Bikers beware: The parking lot is a giant mudhole. Careful making the turn into the lot. I ordered the Tom's Famous, a footlong with American Cheese, Spaghetti sauce, and a little grated Parmesan. It was meh. The dog is a natural casing, true, but has no flavor at all. Boiled, it tasted like a hot dog small children would love- bland and flavorless. And served on an untoasted bun, the sauce soaked in and made for a wet sloppy mess, and it was served stuck to a napkin instead of in a paper tray. I'm willing to bet that they would toast the bun if you asked, but it seems like that should be on offer. That said, it isn't all bad. The service was great, friendly and fast. The Soda was ice cold, but had no ice in it. And the fries were great, fresh cooked, peel on. And the menu is impressive- If you can dream it, you can have a dog that way. Overall, 3 out of 5. While on a random drive to nowhere, I passed this busy little hotdog joint. They have regular footlong dogs as well as their specialties. I'm kicking myself for getting my "regular" ketchup, mustard, and onions. I should have tried the chili dog; it looked delicious. I bit into my boring choice and it crunched like a good hotdog skin should crunch. It was tasty but nothing special. The staff inside were super friendly and kind. It wasn't the fake "we'll say anything to get you to come back again" kindness, they just seem to love what they do. The prices were very fair too; always a plus. They also serve burgers, grinders, wraps, soup, and... ice cream! If the one hotdog didn't fill me up, I definitely would have gone back for an ice cream sundae or shake. The building was small and quaint. It fit appropriately with the surroundings and was a pleasant stop on my way to nowhere.
