Tom's is where all the locals go for a great burger (burgers from A to Z...literally) I have tried many of the burgers on the menu (except the Peanut Butter Burger) but I usually go for the letter "F" Burger with Ortega Chiles and I always add mushrooms, Swiss Cheese, bacon, and grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. Sure it's a big messy thing but it is oh so good. Two people can share a half order of fries which are super yummy. Tom's is also a great spot for a simple and delicious breakfast always cooked to your liking. I think they have the best burgers in town. I usually like Carl's Jr, but these overpower the flavor of those others. My favorite burger there is the Mushroom Swiss. I also love the fact that you can order french fries & onion rings by either 1/2 basket or full basket. They have enormous burgers, but the prices are very reasonable. They only except CASH, but everything there is well worth the price. I would recommend this restaurant to those who want to leave with full stomachs, but great service as well. read more

With literally a burger for every letter of the alphabet Toms shines bright with the options of how you like your onions prepared, your choice of cheese and delicious auxiliary options. And please don't get me started on the staff, on both the Friday nights that I've been here I've been welcomed with a smile and a warm atmosphere by the all female serving staff. They know what they're doing and boy do they do it well. If I was going to give a downfall for Toms, it would be how perfectly and crispy the fries were. I just literally couldn't stop eating them and by the time I was done with my half order, I thought I was going to have a heart attack at my ripe age of 20. This little dinner is tucked away from plain sight, hidden in the corner of a shopping plaza. I heard great things from the locals and man they were right. This place is all about burgers and crazy burger variations. They offer a menu of burgers starting with the letter A and ending with Z. The burger I tried was letter G the Jalapeno and avocado burger which was one of the best burgers I had in ages. The staff were super friendly and I didn't have to wait long for my food. A local "institution" in the Lompoc Valley, Tom's is the "Home of the Educated Hamburger" from "A" (a plain hamburger) to "Z" (zest at it's best; a five pound hamburger). I've visited Tom's since it's early days in the mid-80s when they were located in the Lompoc Shopping Center on "H" street. Their success speaks for themselves, culmunating with their move to their current location and expanded their operation since then. Even with the expanded sitting area, the place can be packed during the lunch hour by the locals, a good indication of how well the place is received. Ask for a copy of their menu and try some of their creations at home when you can't visit in person. Also, you may want to order a "half-size" basket or bag (if take out) of their seasoned fries -- which is still larger than McDonald's Super Sized variety. read more

[Disclaimer] I am not pretentious and I don't like negative people who look for the bad in any situation... But this was the worst call my wife has ever made - ever. My awesome wife - I love her... And I facilitated this decision by reading these reviews and ultimately taking our close friends and my son for some 'authentic' burgers. Maybe this experience was our fault.. Maybe we should have listened and followed the signs... but we didn't. 1) When your waitress recommends a burger with peanut butter and mayonnaise, you're probably in the wrong place. Original? Yes... I'll give you that. 2) When she warns you it'll be a 45 minute wait for a burger - take the warning and move on. As a guy, "Challenge Accepted!" is a credo one can live by - but not in this case, not for a burger. 3) When 45 minutes has gone by and your waitress tells you that there are still 4 tickets ahead of you - cut your losses, swallow your pride - in that 45 minutes I could have gone back and forth to McDonald's and gotten everyone in that restaurant a burger. 4) When 45 minutes turns into 113 minutes - that burger should live up to the hype and taste like an original burger; authentic, meaty, loaded with flavors you've been anticipating for the better half of an afternoon... 5) Upon receipt of my burger I was surprised to see this flimsy patty dominated by a chef's salad, a bunch of jalapeno's - crammed between two buns... ...But enough about me. Don't be fooled by the A-Z burger menu. My wife got the Pineapple burg and I got the Jalapeno, my best friend and his wife got the Chili-burg & original cheese-burg respectively. ...What a disappointment. Aside from a slice of pineapple, some chopped/pickled jalapeno's, a half of a chili - they were no better than a McDonald's cheeseburger with thousand island dressing. If you find this experience to be offensive - I have no words for you. If you're comfortable with sitting on an uncomfortable chair for half of your life, waiting for a burger then by all means - I'll swallow my pride. But holy crap was this a waste of time. read more

Came here because I heard they had a big selection of ingredients for their burgers. I played it safe and got the bacon burger. The burger was disappointing. You can tell this place uses inexpensive ingredients and what's funny is that they charge for everything!!! Fries don't come with the burgers so I would recommend just ordering a half order since that will feed at least 4 people. Service isn't too great either. Waitresses are not friendly and they take forever to come take your order. Another turn off here is it's cash only. I don't see what all the hype is about this place. read more

I asked for it medium and got it well done. The waitress gave me the impression that it could be done. I don't mind the thin burger patty, and it was still juicy. I'm happy to report that my other request of no pickles was satisfied. The menu is cute with the a-z "educated burger" concept. It's like stepping back to 1975, except for the craft beers - which you would not get in 1975. I abstained, but was imaging how good it would be with that. The toppings were fresh and I was happy about that. Now if only they would actually serve it medium. Maybe if I ask for medium rare, I will get it medium? It's so hard to tell. This is your basic, old-school style diner and when we walked in we could immediately tell it was well loved by the locals. We were a bit disappointed that breakfast options are only served until 11 AM as my daughter was craving an omelette for lunch. The portions are good but you pay separately for fries. They have multiple size options for the fries. The basket is huge and can feed an entire table. The onion rings were excellent. The servers were very friendly and attentive and it was a perfect stop for a quick lunch between our sporting events. I love the creative descriptions on the burger menu. This place was awesome (well almost). I ordered the "Don Willis" burger which is not on the menu. (Their menu is quite extensive and humorous, too.) This burger uses grilled cheese sandwiches for the top and bottom buns. It comes loaded with all the fixins, including bacon. One order of fries feeds at least 3. The only reason I couldn't give them 5 stars is that I never got a refill on my drink and the waitress only checked on us once. In her defense it was packed. I've been going to Tom's since I was in high school (over 24 years) and it's always a great burger. I can honostly say that I have tried every burger on the menu (accept left the horseradish off the _)---in HS my girlfriend and I would split the burger and worked our way through the entire menu. Even the ones that sound odd are surprisingly good. French fries are always HOT, and the onion rings crispy. Have been taking my son (6) since he was old enough to chew meat, and he just loves going there (he always has the pizza burger). Service is always good and fast, and the staff is always friendly. Order the "don Willis" one huge burger and when we went there......guess who was there the football player himself! He came over and said hi cause 5 of us ordered it! One of the best burgers I've had! They have every topping for a burger imaginable and they have an A-Z listing of pre chosen toppings for a burger!
