This place has been here forever.. the original owner passed away and it was purchased by one of his servers so it's not skipped a beat. I have no idea why I never wrote a review on this spot as I have been many times. It's a straightforward steakhouse.. this place is no frills and you can come in dressed up or really casual. I would make a reservation and by phone only no on line and it's made clear on the website. The place is small and one side of the room is mirrored this place would do for a refresh but I think it being closed down would be a hindrance but oh well. It's all dark woods and some of the chairs are too hard. The other room is simply painted and has a bar area with an old school register.. for real. This bar makes all your drinks like Martinis (as most drink at a steakhouse) they have beer, wine and etc. Honestly you could see Anthony Bourdain sitting at the bar just hanging out having a drink and visiting with the patrons and them not even knowing who he was. The menu is full of your normal steak favorites and some fish, chicken and etc. With your meal you get a potato of your choice, salad and soup (either that famous French Onion) or whatever the soup of the day is. They do offer other vegetables to get and they have all sorts of apps to eat. If you leave this place hungry that's on you. The French Onion Soup has a following why the cheese topping that has been broiled to perfection. If you don't like cheese this is not for you. Unfortunately the actual Onion Soup and broth has little flavor the onions are perfectly cooked.. I don't know if it needs a touch more salt or umami. It's good just not great. We got the baked clams always a hit but again I wished the topping had a bit more flavor. Salads are a simple mix of iceberg, tomatoes, cucumbers and a house made crouton. For some reason the baked potatoes here are really good and get them with both the sour cream and butter. Pro tip ask for the butter and or Sour Cream on the side or both on the side. Instead of getting a bite of the baked potato you may get a fork of butter.. not a bad thing but the more you know. My husband got the Pepper Steak and I got Taki's Special. The Pepper Steak had peppers, onions and mushrooms in a sauce always good Taki's Special is basically medallions of filet cooked with olive oil, lemon and spices. All meats are cooked to your liking. Came here for Mother's Day. So glad we made reservations. They had our table available as soon as we arrived. The parking is hard as there isn't a parking lot. But we were lucky we found parking in front. The inside is pretty tight space. We had the table right by the counter. We squeezed in as close as we can so the staff could pass by back and forth. The service was good. The atmosphere was a bit loud and hard to have conversations. The meals came with soup and salad. The cream of chicken soup was good. The salad was iceberg with a couple of cucumbers and tomatoes. Everyone at the table ordered the prime rib. The kids split a rib eye. Which looked delicious and enough for two. The prime rib was good. However for the price it wasn't as big as a slice as I've had elsewhere. My mom got one with a bone so hers was a nice size. read more

We were there for the first time yesterday. Nancy was very nice and my husband loved the liver and onions. I had the french onion soup and it was good. However, we are not understanding how the bill was $136.00 with one order of liver and onions and a french onion soup 3 glasses of house wine and a martini! The drinks were not listed on the check. We left a good tip bringing the bill up to $166.00. It would be nice to know how much we were charged for four drinks. We do not mind the 3% credit card fee we owned a business. read more

Golden steer is one of those hole in the wall places that catches you by surprise. At least it certainly caught me by surprise. This is currently my favorite steakhouse in the area and I'd even venture to say in general. The food is really good aesthetically it's pretty cute and has an old fashion cowboy ambiance to it if you like that sort of thing. With relatively good service depending on the time you go. Now I know I said that this is my favorite steakhouse but you may see that the review I left is a 4 star one and that is because for what they do for me in food they sometimes lack in service. Sometimes depending on when you go for example if they're busier the servers can be a bit snappy and sometimes over the top. For instance I went there with one of my business partners to show him one of my favorite spots last night (2.21.2026). And everything was all good up until the end of our meal where they were starting to wrap things up. Our server continued to pester us essentially trying to usher us out of the door before we could really finish up continuously asking if we were done when we clearly would still be eating. Now I will say that we were having a business meeting so she could have mistaken times we were reviewing our briefs for us being done with our food. But shortly after that there was a gentlemen who's association with the restaurant I was unshure of that didn't say any words but was pointing to us gesturing at his watch and pointing toward the door during the portion of the evening where we were paying for our food. I work in food service and have sympathy to hard workers eager to go home after a long shift however the manner in which he was communicating with us was completely inappropriate under any condition which resulted in unfortunately a 1 star reduction of my favorite steakhouse. And for the record when trying to show someone a new place can be very embarrassing. If that's the type of thing you can look past then this would be a place I'd still recommend, but if you have glass bones and paper skin you may be better off somewhere else. read more

We rejected the filets and they decided to charge us for the individual items we actually ate. - $10 per bowl of soup, $10 per salad (simple side salad), $10 per choice of potato choice. - One Arnold Palmer, tea and lemonade mix, $5.25 - Price for the 6oz filet meals was $29.99x2=$59.98. The total charge after adjusting for the bad filets was $58.12. - The net discount for the rejected filets? Less than One Dollar!!! We argued about the price adjustment and they eventually brought it down to $36 and change. Which included $10x2 for the soup, $7 for a scoop of cottage cheese in place of the $10 salad, $5.25 for the Arnold Palmer non-alcoholic drink, plus a 3% charge for using a credit card, and local tax. I ask you, does this make sense to you? Will never go back! Same dingy, dark, cold atmosphere they've had for years. Great supper club style restaurant! If you have a problem with the decor or claim it should be updated please educate yourself. This is a throwback restaurant. I love it as a Wisconsin raised adult living in the area. My grandparents are long gone and my parents are more recently lost. However, when I come here I feel like I am reaching back in time and holding out my hand to have them join me in a memory of "fancy" dinners from my childhood. I'm sad to say. No smelts!.... I have been to the Steer many times in the past and always loved it. This time I went in with a non alcohol mind with the thought of not getting my go to ribeye steak. I ordered the Reuben sandwich, fries and an iced tea. The Reuben came on a dark rye bread ( not swirl rye ), it was soggy on one half of the side on the plate? The corned beef was shredded not sliced. Weird. I think I've always been served sliced corned beef before. The fries were good hot and crispy. The service was good, my friends and I talked for a good 30 minutes after dining with no push to get out. As I saw in previous reviews, don't look up the ceiling it is a mess. We had a celebratory dinner at the Golden Steer for my birthday and our daughter's anniversary. We really wanted to like this restaurant. We ordered several items from the long list of specials on the whiteboard visible as we entered the restaurant. They included mussels and shrimp jonghe for appetizers, surf & turf, rack of lamb and T-bone steak for entrees. While the French Onion Soup was delicious, everything else was mediocre. The mussels tasted a bit old and did not have any extra wine/garlic sauce to dip bread in as we are used to. The shrimp dejonghe was a bit runny and had too much garlic. The rack of lamb and steaks were not very tender or flavorful. Disappointingly, there wasn't anything we would order again except the soup. Alas, if Yelp rates this as #1 of 59 restaurants in Forest Park as their ratings stated, they should re-examine their criteria. Sure, the restaurant has been there for a long time as you can tell by its tired decor, but I think it must just have endeared itself to the locals who are happy to have a nearby place offering a long list of food specials to choose from. While our waitress and the staff were friendly and efficient, I think most fine diners would find the food offerings coming up short of expectations. Our family has been going to the Steer for 40+ years. It's been a mainstay for family celebrations and in all those years we've NEVER had a bad meal or service. Sadly, tonight the service was the worst we've ever experienced. The filet entree was tough and chewy, Margo our server was in la la land. She threw out one of our leftovers that we asked to have wrapped. We mentioned to the hostess it was our daughter's birthday and they forgot. Went to Golden Steer last night for my birthday which is the first time since it changed owners. It continues to be absolutely fabulous - as great as it's always been. At first I was hesitant to go there, because of some less than stellar Yelp reviews, but so very glad, I checked it out for myself and family. The cozy ambience remains, the food continues to be as good as ever and they have a great list of traditional cocktails. The waitress whose name I didn't catch was attentive and had a great personality, in other words "real", not stamped out of an HR department like some of the upper end chain restauarants. Ditto for the the bus man, "Juan the Fabulous". If you want good food, warm and attentive service, a reasonably priced wine and drinks list with a good helping of real nostalgic 1960 steak house feel, this is it. This is a place my husband & I have patronized for decades. Made sure to order carry out during covid hoping they would survive. Haven't been out to dine until recently due to husbands' health issues, so was very excited to return. Made reservations and brought daughter with us. I was saddened on so many levels. The cocktails were horrible; I ordered a whiskey sour and have no idea what I was served. When I complained to the waitress I was dismissed. The food quality was not their usual, cuts of prime rib thinner than before over cooked lobster, a real sad state of affairs. The table we were seated at was in the bar section, loud and constantly be banged into, the table way too small for even our meal, needed to stack dishes on the window ledge. The price for dinner for 4 which included 3 cocktails was over $500.00 not including tips. I was told that over this past holiday season the restaurant was sold to the lady who worked the bar. So for those of you who like me remember when the price of a meal was based on both the quality of the food and the ambiance the Golden Steer is closer to a sports bar (very overpriced) than the cozy old school steak house it used to be. I recently had a large party (about 25, for a funeral luncheon) there. They opened the restaurant an hour earlier than usual to accommodate us. Our family has been going here for the past 50yrs. Sadly since the ownership has changed hands the quality of food has gone down and prices went way up almost doubled. Always love this place but fell short on Monday night. Not busy and yet waitress rushed us because she wanted to leave. If I'm spending 80 or more per person I don't want to be rushed. Great spot. Throwback to a different era not fancy, but food is really solid. My favorites are the Greek chicken which can be easily shared with someone. It's a huge portion and the burgers. My husband loves the liver. The salad and soup that comes is a great bargain as well. Good drinks, love the waitresses and the owner who used to be a bartender very friendly lots of fun we prefer sitting in the bar versus the main dining room, mostly so we can watch the evening news and wheel of Fortune. It's interesting people watching one of my favorite local spots. Don't expect steaks like a Gibson's. But the price is really good and the quality of steak is great for the price. This place used to be really good. After the ownership change, it's really sank. Second time consecutively I've got a bad steak, there won't be a third time. They cooked my steak wrong, they did make another one but I had to wait. The waitress said she'd buy me a drink as an apology. That was a nice gesture but I got charged for it. The steaks themselves are a half inch thick, the quality is nothing like it used to be. A grocery store sells nicer steaks. You used to get a legit steak here. Old school steakhouse restaurant - with an awesome Prime Rib special on Friday and Saturday nights. I was there with family - party of six overall and we were all happy with our food and the service. Recently I ordered prime rib at another restaurant - what I received at Golden Steer was about twice as much for the same price. It's been there for 50 plus years and it shows its age inside.
