PEPPER STEAK

This place has been here forever.. the original owner passed away and it was purchased by one of his servers so it's not skipped a beat. I have no idea why I never wrote a review on this spot as I have been many times. It's a straightforward steakhouse.. this place is no frills and you can come in dressed up or really casual. I would make a reservation and by phone only no on line and it's made clear on the website. The place is small and one side of the room is mirrored this place would do for a refresh but I think it being closed down would be a hindrance but oh well. It's all dark woods and some of the chairs are too hard. The other room is simply painted and has a bar area with an old school register.. for real. This bar makes all your drinks like Martinis (as most drink at a steakhouse) they have beer, wine and etc. Honestly you could see Anthony Bourdain sitting at the bar just hanging out having a drink and visiting with the patrons and them not even knowing who he was. The menu is full of your normal steak favorites and some fish, chicken and etc. With your meal you get a potato of your choice, salad and soup (either that famous French Onion) or whatever the soup of the day is. They do offer other vegetables to get and they have all sorts of apps to eat. If you leave this place hungry that's on you. The French Onion Soup has a following why the cheese topping that has been broiled to perfection. If you don't like cheese this is not for you. Unfortunately the actual Onion Soup and broth has little flavor the onions are perfectly cooked.. I don't know if it needs a touch more salt or umami. It's good just not great. We got the baked clams always a hit but again I wished the topping had a bit more flavor. Salads are a simple mix of iceberg, tomatoes, cucumbers and a house made crouton. For some reason the baked potatoes here are really good and get them with both the sour cream and butter. Pro tip ask for the butter and or Sour Cream on the side or both on the side. Instead of getting a bite of the baked potato you may get a fork of butter.. not a bad thing but the more you know. My husband got the Pepper Steak and I got Taki's Special. The Pepper Steak had peppers, onions and mushrooms in a sauce always good Taki's Special is basically medallions of filet cooked with olive oil, lemon and spices. All meats are cooked to your liking. They have wine and beer & etc but the list for wine is not huge. It's old school and everyone comes here. Parking if you can get it is right outside the door but it's limited, basically it's street parking. Enjoy

ROAST PRIME ROUND OF BEEF

Came here for Mother's Day. So glad we made reservations. They had our table available as soon as we arrived. The parking is hard as there isn't a parking lot. But we were lucky we found parking in front. The inside is pretty tight space. We had the table right by the counter. We squeezed in as close as we can so the staff could pass by back and forth. The service was good. The atmosphere was a bit loud and hard to have conversations. The meals came with soup and salad. The cream of chicken soup was good. The salad was iceberg with a couple of cucumbers and tomatoes. Everyone at the table ordered the prime rib. The kids split a rib eye. Which looked delicious and enough for two. The prime rib was good. However for the price it wasn't as big as a slice as I've had elsewhere. My mom got one with a bone so hers was a nice size.

Golden Steer's special of the night. Their T bone steak. Fantastic!

It's just not the same place it used to be. Too many "specials" and quality is suffering.

Great food and service! Neither of us were super hungry. We shared a steak and it was more than enough for two.

The website is HORRIBLE! You can't get the menu or order online even when you try through different apps.

We got to try items that we had not had together before including the goat cheese and tomato sauce with the toasted bread. I personally loved the lamb which was very tender and fell off the bone. The staff were very attentive and friendly. They had a couple large groups that they were able to navigate with ease. They also provided a parting drink for everyone. Our Patas Bravas dish did come out a little late so we were not able to enjoy it as much since we were getting full, but it tasted heavenly with the dipping sauce. The dinning room was fairly large as we walked in and sat close to the door. Pedro gave us the specials of the day and I ordered the seafood risotto ($32). My friend ordered the Fettuccine Fruitti di Mare ($30). Both dishes was good, with the right balance of protein and noodles. My risotto was a bit too cheesy but it was manageable. Service was very good, they stopped by to check on you and replace the dishes if needed. Overall, the food and service was great. There are plenty of street parking around the restaurant. I would come back for more next time.

We had the absolute pleasure of having Bessie take care of us. When I tell you this woman sparkles! I'd give this place 5 stars for Bessie alone. She is an absolute sweetheart. Gave us some great recommendations for drinks, and kept us laughing all night. Food was phenomenal. Started off with the saganaki and the shrimp dejonge appetizers. What is about saganaki that turns a normal dinner into an event? Both apps were yummy. My prime rib was perfectly cooked. The added touch of au jus on the meat was perfection. My husband had the medallions Oscar. So amazing. Definitely in the top 5 dinners I've ever had. We didn't save room for dessert, but this just means we'll have to go back. Wonderful food, great ambiance, and a staff that really takes care of you. What more could you want?

We all got the prime rib (delish) and tried the baked potato soup (best we've had) and Shrimp DeJonghe, a Chicago staple. The prices are high but well worth it. But the belle of the ball: our server, Bessie. She's worked here for over 40 years and is so suited for the job. She is personable, funny, and makes you feel like family. You're not just a guest at Tom's, you're sitting in her dining room.

The bread service was fantastic. The tomato focaccia and the baguette were both excellent and I had to remind myself not to fill up on it before the main meal! LOL! We started with the calamari which was very well seasoned and clearly not the typical frozen version you often see from foodservice distributors. It tasted fresh, was crispy, and well prepared. For dinner I ordered the margherita pizza which was simple and delicious. I ended up ordering a second one to-go for my partner who couldn't make it to dinner. He also loved it - even after it sat for ~30 min or so while we chatted more, then drove home to the Maywood area. I would imagine their delivery is pretty good based on that! My mom had the rigatoni vodka with added crumbled Italian sausage which she loved, and my dad ordered the Marcelino. He loved the generous amount of seafood and how well seasoned it was. My parents are big wine drinkers and my dad was especially impressed with the wine list and the selection available. Oscar was an incredible server!! He struck the perfect balance of being attentive while still letting us enjoy a relaxed, unhurried evening. The support staff and food runners were also fantastic and very friendly, making the entire service experience feel polished! I also loved the kitchen was more open which gives you confidence in the quality and care that goes into the food. The dining space is inviting with a nice bar area and an additional room that looks perfect for busy nights or private gatherings. Overall a great restaurant that we would absolutely return to!!

I loved the crunch of the quesadillas against the creamy filling. Next we shared a carne asada pizza. There is street side outdoor seating; however, there were no table umbrellas during our visit. The staff greeted us immediately and was happy to review the menu with us. We had the mole with roasted broccoli and cauliflower, unicorn pescado tacos and a Plato Fuerte with shrimp, lobster and chicken in a tasty creamy sauce. We loved all of the entrées; however, thought the mole was a lacking the traditional mole flavors we've tried before. The unicorn fish tacos were the standout and were crispy and delicious! We also appreciated the 4 taco serving, which was perfect for two. Prices were on point with other similar style restaurants in Oak Park, slightly elevated but fair for the quality of ingredients. Let's not forget the cocktails...outstanding!
