This is a review for the new location for this restaurant on North Road. We popped in here for a business lunch and were pleasantly surprised by the nice, muted but classy surroundings, friendly and efficient service, the general comfort level of the restaurant and, of course, the food. It has only just opened and is still finding its feet. However the waiter was first class and the food he served was equally good. It must be said that it is not traditional Thai, but it was very nice all the same. We were served noodles and broth as a free appetizer. Then we had chicken satay, massuman curry and s chicken noodle dish. The restaurant is not as yet licensed to sell alcohol, but it is just across the road from a very nice wine and spirits shop next to the local Kroger...we went there first and took our little alcohol offering in to Tomy Thai with us. We met the owner, Toudy, from Laos. She was very obliging and was happy to spend time chatting. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed lunch here and will definitely be back. read more

I went here on April 10 on recommendations from staff at the hotel where I was staying. Hangry and determined to eat something delicious, I trudged a few blocks down the street to this place, which is in a random strip mall and not easily findable unless you're looking for it. (It's across the street from the supermarket.) Letting my stomach instead of either my brain or wallet order, I got - Crab Rangoon - Steamed dumplings - Phat See-Ew (every other place spells it pad see ew) It was nice and quiet, with a lot of families coming in for a group meal. The servers mostly seemed to be ETSU college students, and I didn't see any actually Thai people in the main area at the time. Nothing fancy, but definitely clean and spacious. When the food arrived, I discovered that the crab rangoons (which are an American invention, and also usually associated with Chinese and not Thai restaurants) were delicious, the dumplings (which were served in a bamboo steam cooker) were delicious, and the pad see ew was like the stale cardboard version of actually good noodles. So I gave five stars for the crab rangoons and dumplings (neither of which normally counts as Thai food), and one star for the pad see ew (which IS a Thai dish, and which here, was just awful). I couldn't finish the pad see ew. I made a valiant effort. I even took some back with me and tried later, and it was like trying to gnaw my teeth on week-old, dried out starch. No flavor. No character. Nothing except cardboard stiffness. Yuck. I sincerely hope this is not normal for this place. read more

This restaurant had so much potential. When they first opened up, they actually had really large portions and quality of food was very good. But as the time passes, their portions are a lot smaller, their prices higher. Their quality of food has gone downhill. Last time I ordered pad thai with shrimps, and they used very small frozen shrimp to make the dish and I paid extra to have shrimps. I was very disappointed when I took the food home and I saw the size of shrimps. Curries aren't that great. Not very flavorful. You almost have to ask them to use basil in there curries because they don't prepare the curries like they're supposed to. If you want to decent thai restaurant just bite the bullet and drive to Asheville and actually eat at a quality thai restaurant. I think that people just slop stuff together and they just charge whatever they can and they think other people don't know the quality of food and they think they can get away with it. read more

Today the portion size was about 40% of what I'm used to getting and the flavor was not good at all. Restaurants are going through a hard time right now and I would imagine that there will be a lot of issues that we will all have to be understanding and patient of. I came here because my wife wanted to eat Thai food. They did in fact have Thai food. My wife was happy for she wanted Thai food. I was incredibly disappointed because I hate Thai food. I put one bite of Thai food in my mouth and knew immediately, I no longer wanted Thai food. Overall, terrible experience with Thai food. Ordered fried rice. Arrived so dry I could not eat it. I asked 4 times for some of the sauce like my wife had on her chili fish which was very good and waited over 5 minutes each time. 4th time asking and was told their would be an extra charge which I agreed to and 10 minutes later still no sauce. By this time everyone else was totally finished so I canceled the sauce and left without ever getting to eat. Nice Gortons fish sticks sold as Mahi! Never go to this place! Angkor Bistro is much better value! Place should be called Microwave Thai! Chicken Satay was a cross between a corn dog and McDonalds chicken fingers! They bring you a spoon full of peanut sauce accompanied with a garnish from a salad! Absolutely embarrassing! This was my second and last time! One more thing, nothing worse than putting your forearms on the table and your skin sticks to it because it's STILL DIRTY! Clean your window sills & you might get 5 stars. Interior ambiance was warm & inviting. Deep red colors all around, black touches & a simple yet authentic feeling abound. Service was friendly but not that quick. -Thai tea = $2.99 & includes a free refill. Nice! -Masaman curry chicken was very tasty, though a bit too liquid-y for my taste and didn't have enough chicken. -Sticky rice was SUPER sticky. It was almost like pure starch balls when I ate it later as leftovers. -Chicken pad Thai very good. -House soup & crispy wonton noodles are served with every lunch special and brought out automatically. -The soup was just broth. We ordered massaman and red curry - chicken for each - and loved them. My red curry had an awesome spice level (between mild/medium) and great flavor. They were happy to bring extra rice! And they have very generous portions for the price. I saw someone ordered the pad thai and it looked like they got about 4 lbs of it - all for under 11 bucks. I'm looking forward to going back and trying more. It's in an unassuming strip mall and the ambiance is alright - if not for that I would give them 5 stars! read more

The only received this restaurant 2 stars is because i have experienced quality here before. However today was much different. We were seated, and ordered our drinks. I ordered a diet soda. I received what tasted like a perfect Pepsi. I could not get the attention of the waitress for a while (we the only people in the restuarant), so I went in search. I found her sitting a normal table eating a full course meal. I told her that I asked for a diet soda, she said it is diet. She said they have a problem with there cow and the syrup. Positives: 1) My fried rice and curry was excellent. 2) The waitress was friendly, didn't charge me for the drink, and offered to get me a different drink. Lessons to be Learned 1) Adequate management would have prevented all of the following comments. 2) It is not ok to serve a known bad product. Its much more respectable to say we cannot t serve our deficient drinks at this time due to faulty equipment. ( I never seen a repair person come in to fix anything. I wonder if they were even called). 3) Finding your waitress having a full dinner when you have been looking for her is unprofessional and shows lack of care for customers. I usually love this place so I tried to carry out a very simple Tomy Thai fried rice with chicken with medium heat. The hostess was great and very personable but when I got home I was quite disappointed. The portion size was 1/2 of the normal size which led me to believe they try and dupe you when you carry out. Then my rice was barely fried and had ZERO seasoning. None. Not even close to medium heat and none of the other great flavors this dish usually has. Very disappointed. read more

The flexible lunch and dinner hours make it a great restaurant to visit any time with anyone - though Tomy Thai does not have a children's menu, there are options to have no spice added (for picky eaters) and simple meal choices like fried rice, soup, or salad. I arrived a little before noon and it wasn't too busy - there was enough seating to spread everyone out a bit. The restaurant is on the smaller side, but I didn't feel cramped. For beverages, I recommend the Thai Sweet Iced Tea; it's a tasty twist on the classic sweet tea. Before I even ordered my waitress brought a chicken broth soup with fried noodles; it was a flavorful snack to have before a meal. I ordered the Yellow Curry dish with brown rice, as I am not great with spicy food, and it was delicious. There was a mild spice and the mixture of curry, chicken, and pineapple was wonderful. I was a bit put off with jazz music playing in a Thai restaurant, but it was soothing and relaxing to listen to in the middle of a busy work-day. They read off our order, we agreed it was correct, and I paid, including 15% tip. Then we waited for--yes--25 minutes before the food came. This place has really gone downhill. Their curry is so watered down now, to the point of being bland. My wife and I used to eat here once a month or so. Last time, we decided we will not go back. We both get the massamun curry. I swear, 2-3 years ago, their curry was more delicious, thicker, more like gravy. I guess most people in Tri Cities, don't realize, that curry is supposed to be the consistency of gravy, not so liquidy. These guys serve you a "curry" and it is so watered down, like a big bowl of soup. Probably because they are trying to cut corners and save a few cents. Tomy Thai keeps raising their prices and lowering their quality. I wish we had another Thai food alternative in the Tri Cities that was more authentic. I've sampled many Thai kitchens and just got around to giving Tomi Thai a try. Have to say, I'm pretty disappointed. The red curry was meh, I'd give it 2.5 stars but, I don't know if this is a take out thing, if they are more generous when dining in, but the order was literally a container of curry sauce with a few vegetables floating around for 12 bucks (there are great restaurants around and this kind of thing is complete unaceptable BS). Secondarily, I had to add water and steam the rice as well because it was undercooked. Somehow I thought it might be a place that prepped their food but I could tell the veggies were precut before purchase. Thai food should be nurturing. First and last visit for me. It's so disappointing to think you're entering a Thai food restaurant and then find out you're in an Asian conFusion restaurant. The good stuff first: It was clean, the service was pleasant for the most part, it's reasonably priced, and the Thai Iced Tea was adequate. The rest: We were served clear chicken broth lacking flavor and fried wontons as the starter that comes with the lunch entree. Nothing Thai about that. I ordered a spicy Phanaeng Curry with tofu and white rice. My husband ordered the Thai-spicy Yellow Curry with chicken and white rice. My curry contained lots of green bell peppers creating a really odd combination of flavors. The distinct flavor of a green bell pepper doesn't blend well with the curry, imo. The green bell peppers were cut into bite-sized rectangles, the red bell peppers were cut into thin strips, and there were a few stray pieces of cubed carrots and some green peas skulking around the bottom of the bowl. I squeezed the tiny carrot cube with my fingers and could tell that it was previously frozen by its rubberiness and the amount of water that seeped out. I'm relaying this info to tell you that what I received was a hodgepodge of various ingredients, probably prepared for other dishes, and thrown together in my bowl. The veggies were all different levels of doneness, too: the broccoli and green bell peppers were undercooked while the the other veggies were overcooked. I wonder if the reason our curries were so watery was because all of the veggies used were previously frozen. Earth Fare, Kroger, and The Fresh Market are within 5 minutes of the restaurant so there is no excuse for not having fresh vegetables. My husband's Yellow curry contained pineapple chunks. Again, the distinct flavor of the pineapple did not mesh with the curry. Items added to curries should be mildly flavored and complementary, not distracting. This pineapple curry dish reminded me of an Appletini or some other obnoxious fruity abomination that no one should consume on principle if for no other reason. The curry sauce tasted OK, but was more like a soup served in a large bowl. Our rice, which wasn't delivered to our table until a few minutes after we received the curry, was served on a small side plate. I'm not sure how they expected us to eat the rice and curry together other than to dump the rice into the bowl of curry making it even more of a hodgepodge soup. This place serves a Thai-Chinese-Tennessee version of Thai food. Not Thai food. East TN is like an Asian food Twilight Zone where no matter where you go, you get some bastardized version of Chinese take-out complete with fortune cookies. This restaurant is no exception. Yes, they even have fortune cookies. If you want to pretend you're eating Thai food, go here. If you want Thai food, drive to the nearest big city. read more

Had Pad Thai which tasted as if were cooked with last weeks overused grease. A very bad nose to it. Judging from reviews this place is hit or miss. I had the pad Thai and some shrimp.... maybe a special. Sadly both were too sweet. Though the food was cooked well. Maybe I can get the curry next time. My advice is to check out the reviews, for example, people seem happy with the curry and there is one happy drunken noodle person. I wish I would have done that before going. The waitresses seemed disinterested, but were not rude. Our waitress was not helpful when we asked questions, and she was MIA through most of the meal. It was a strange vibe. For instance, we asked what was popular or what is their best seller? She said some thing like: it depends what you want, like what protein do you want? I would bump this place up to five stars with a similar experience as to what I had my first time there. This is a small, cozy place near the ETSU campus. Really enjoyed the ambiance and decor of this place, very soothing to be in strip mall, felt removed from it all. I had a new dish, Thai-Style low mien and it was tremendous! Let me warn you, the portions are IMMENSE at the place, be careful about getting an appetizer because your entree is super filling. I had the "hot" spice level as compared to the "Thai hot" level, probably a good choice. The service was friendly, efficient, and professional. I wasn't the biggest fan of their spring roll app, would try something different next time. Think my tab for two entrees, an app, beer and glass of wine came to around 42 bucks or so.
