What am I missing here? First, the spicy sauce on the table is in a metal pot like the one you would get cream in. It had crusted particles on the sides and we asked for a fresh one. We asked for knives and were given one to share. The shrimp appetizer looked like no shrimp I have ever seen before. There was no salt or pepper shaker on the table to I went and got one off another table. As I brought it to our table I made sure to let my fellow diner know to use a napkin as the shaker was dirty and sticky. We finally just ordered chicken broth with ramen noodles expecting it to taste like Lipton chicken noodle soup. SURPRISE ~ not like anything I have ever tasted before. The booth where we were seated faced west so there were slats and a shade to cover the window. Reading the menu was next to impossible. This was my first exposure to ramen and, most likely, my last. I got tired of waiting for my printed receipt so we left. I will not return to this restaurant. read more

I was a little surprised when I went inside Ton-ichi. I was expecting just the basic tables and chairs lay out but it turned out to be nicely decorated inside. We were greeted and seated in a booth as soon as we walked in for a weekday dinner. I tried the EDAMAME, TONKOTSU RICH GARLIC RAMEN, and the WAGYU BEEF RAMEN. The ramen dishes were fantastic. I liked the garlic broth the best, it was so flavorful. The beef was delicious too, but I wish there was more protein in it. The service is very friendly, attentive, and efficient. The place is clean and parking is easy. They also offer rice bowls and fruit smoothies as well. I would like to try the rice bowls next time I visit. Ramen is probably one of my favorite foods of all time, and while I couldn't give this place five stars, I am glad it exists. The ambiance is lovely (though I did take out), location is very convenient, servers and hosts are friendly and the ingredients well prepped and packed for a to-go order. I found the flavors of the wakame seaweed out of place with the pork broth, though the nori was good. The chashu pork tasted good but was very thinly sliced and was easily lost if it melted into the broth. It's a good ramen, but it would only be a dish that could tide me over until I could make it to one of my favorite places that's farther away, and sometimes that is good enough. read more

My 21st ramen restaurant review. Ton-ichi ramen is a chain ramen restaurant. I had high hopes for this place because the reviews on google are pretty decent. Unfortunately the ramen was pretty underwhelming. I would have given a 3 star but a few of the items did not look like the menu pictures, and the ingredients used were not accurate. The chicken karaage was decent. It was pretty crispy but it was kind of lacking in seasoning. This was inaccurate because they were chicken filets for some reason instead of chicken chunks in the menu. I found the breading to be slightly too thick. I ordered the Tonkotsu Rich Garlic. It calls out "black garlic oil" and it appears to show this in the ramen pictured on the menu. Except, when the ramen came out, there was no black garlic oil. Instead, there was a big pile of uncooked minced garlic... The broth and noodles were OK. I was not that happy with the egg. The egg was cold without the inside being the nice jelly-like consistency that is shown in the pictures and that you can find at other restaurants. Also, the piece of meat were very thin. One piece was also very salty. The fish cake slice was also really thin. Service was fine. I hope the restaurant can improve on these points. PS: Reading other yelp reviews right now and they called out the exact same black garlic oil issue as me. read more

I'm very picky about ramen, so I did not bother ordering it for myself. My husband got the ton-ichi ramen, I got the beef sukiyaki rice bowl and we shared a shrimp tempura to start with. I actually was interested in their bento boxes, but I found out that they no longer serve those anymore. The shrimp tempura were bit and crunchy. They use breading to coat it rather than a wet batter. Their marinated eggs were more firm than runny. My husband thought the ramen was just okay. The beef sukiyaki bowl was big and flavorful. It had plenty of veggies and saucy beef. It was very filling and I went home with a little leftovers. I probably could have finished it all if I didn't have the shrimp tempura. The rice bowl also came with a massive side of miso soup that had plenty of seaweed and tofu. I'd come back for their rice bowls. They also have korean fried chicken which looks promising and I'd also like to try that, too. I'd continue to pass on the ramen, though. read more

The menu has quite a few options: I went with the garlic tonkotsu ramen. The broth was tasty enough, but the noodles were hard. Not sure if they were undercooked (which is what it tasted like) or if that's their style, but if the latter it holds no appeal for me. The food is completely flavorolous - this is the most bland ramen I have ever had (even though I ordered the garlic tonkatsu, which you would expect to be quite flavorful). The brown sugar bubble tea was milk with some sort of thick syrup in the bottom. This is the most childlike, least tea like bubble tea ever. Well, that was a disappointment that unfortunately will plague me for the next few hours as stomach pain. I ordered the bow bonds to start, which were OK, but a lot of fat. Turns out that was the theme for the meal. Next I had item D4, the Gyu Don. This is gonna hurt. It's advertised as brisket and rice and caramelized onions and a egg on top. Turns out it's really rice, onions and fat. Major disappointment. The brisket was steamed and so much fat. I couldn't eat any of it. It actually made me ill looking at it. The egg was brown and Stone cold although it was cooked medium. Can't say I've ever seen an egg like this, but obviously it sat for a while in some serving tray getting cold. Gross. I am not from this area and it looks like this may be a newer restaurant. The only saving grace about this place is that it is next door to a poke place where I could actually get something to eat. We are meat eaters. Except for Lent. So this time we tried: Fried Calamari for appetizer--4 stars. Very good with dipping sauce. The sauce is delicious and is the same sauce that is on the pork buns. Nice crispy/crunchy exterior with same sauce that was used on the pork buns served on side. From there it was a bit downhill in terms of food. I opted for the Tonkotsu Rich Garlic ramen. The picture in the menu seemed to show a black garlic oil, but came out with just a lot of chopped raw garlic. Broth itself was flat almost as if it just used a prepackaged base. Not much depth or flavor to it. Ramen noodle quality was okay. Soft boiled egg was a nice try. For the kiddo, a chicken katsu bento box. Chicken katsu was more breading than meat. Vegetable tempura similar story but also seemed to be more batter than vegetable. White rice was meh. California roll seemed to be the most enjoyable out of the bento box. Starter house salad was meh. For the price point, I'd expect much better quality and attention to detail. And so the quest for the perfect bowl of ramen in the western Chicago suburbs continues... Every Saturday, at open, my friends and I come to this restaurant. The food is Great! It has something for all of us, as we have one who likes the rich traditional broths, myself who prefers the milder (but little spicy) chicken broth, and another who doesn't like ramen but loves the bento boxes and hibichi options. I feel like I am eating real food made with real ingredients, and the prices cannot be beat. We're ramen addicts, and of the several places we go to in Dupage County, this one has the best food for the best price. They even SUPER catered to me the one week I needed a special diet - taking all of the veggies out and adding a bunch of extra egg in at no charge! We usually have the same server, and she always greets us with a big smile, knows our orders by heart now and makes the experience even better. We've also enjoyed all the appetizers we've tried: karage, pork buns, gyoza, shumai, tempuras and their edamame is always cooked JUST right - not gummy or over done. This place is truly amazing. We had the most incredible and sweet waitress ever. We were celebrating a birthday and she gave him a bday drink of choice AND a candle lit cheesecake desert. Absolutely delicious. This is the best ramen in the area. I ordered the green milk bubble tea and my husband ordered a strawberry smoothie and added tapioca. The bubble tea and smoothies were absolutely amazing- definitely best in the area for decent prices. Best tasting boba we've had, as well. I literally ordered a second tea to go... We ordered pork gyoza - pretty standard, but very tasty and crispy! I had the spicy chicken ramen and my husband had the spicy pork miso ramen. I LOVED my ramen. The broth was not overly thick and had a great flavor with the chili oil added. The ingredients mixed SO well together and the chicken was very moist and tender. My husband thought the spicy miso was pretty good - he tends to lean more towards saltier tasting foods and wishes he would have added soy sauce to it. Overall, he gave it a 6 out of 10 for his tasting. It's a very cute small restaurant with smaller intimate feel. They have definitely made it feel mor intimate with the wooden area in the middle of the restaurant to make it feel more private. My first visit to this place and I was not impressed. On the positive side, the hostess at the front door/cashier stand was very pleasant and helpful. The place seemed clean. I ordered the vegetable ramen (#9 on the menu) and didn't like it. There seemed to be no seasoning and the vegetables appeared to be canned, not fresh. It just didn't taste good. I have some of it leftover and don't even want to finish it. We dined in on a Monday afternoon so it wasn't busy. The ambiance was comfortable, and decorated traditionally. Ordered some pork gyoza, spicy beef ramen, spicy chicken ramen, and had brown sugar bubble milk tea. Really appreciated Lisa explaining how there's an option to get it with milk only or get it with tea added. Really enjoyed it both ways, I think more sweet and thick with just milk!
