After the long stroll from Coney Island to Brighton Beach, I was ready for some dumplings. I found this spot through an online article about local gems (many of which were sadly closed), so I landed here--a couple of blocks from the boardwalk. The service? Absolutely unbeatable. I felt as though they'd read my mind--everything I needed, they had covered. I went for the classic Georgian soup dumplings, packed with beef and incredibly tasty. I also tried the emerald green tarragon soda. If you hadn't told me the flavor was tarragon, I'd never have guessed--it was subtle to the point of mystery, but now I can say I've tried it! The atmosphere was lively, buzzing with diners. I avoid restaurants with TVs, but the music festival showing added a unique vibe. Even with every table full, the noise level was low enough to have a real conversation--no shouting required. Next time I might have to go for the cheese boat. read more

We took a very long walk out to Brighton this summer, largely on hopes of trying out this Georgian restaurant's apparently world famous khacipuri. This bread boat of melted cheese with an egg on top did not fail to disappoint--with those ingredients, how could it? But this was moony, swoony, fight your partner for the last bite good. The cheese permeates every nook of the perfectly-baked fresh bread while the egg cooks slightly on the bubbling cheese and mixes. Tearing it apart and eating it somehow feels simultaneously fine dining and a bit primal. There are--perhaps shockingly--other options besides melted cheese bread boats. We also shared grilled sausages with pomegranate seeds--very tasty, the pomegranate providing a nice punch of contrast to the rich merguez. I didn't entirely love the Georgian wine we tried-- a bit sweeter than I like for a white--but was fun to try. read more

Pretty good spot! This is my second time having Georgian food and my boyfriend and I were pretty obviously not Georgian so our server was super patient with us and explained how to properly eat the food. I wish I remembered the names of what we got but we got the dumplings and the cheese boat. Both were great, but also pretty filling. The dumplings were HUGE, almost the size of my palm and I couldn't eat more than one. The cheese bread boat was delicious but definitely would not be able to eat it alone. Recommend sharing it with one or two other friends. Also this place sometimes doesn't accept card so bring cash just in case! read more

I only ever got the khinkali with beef to go here but OMG they are so good and so filling! I was super hungry and craving khinkali like I've eaten in Georgia but most places sell them frozen or with pork mixed in. This place has a choice of pork, beef or lamb and that's a huge difference! They were yummy and filling and made just the way they're supposed to be. I'd love to one day sit down and have a full restaurant experience here. read more

This place is the best ! Been here 3x n always left very happy. The portions are big n everything is delicious. They have a Georgian beer that was very good too. The only thing we never tried is dessert which looked great but we were so full. Only one couple was dining in on a cold Saturday afternoon. After 5pm, the cafe filled with customers representing an older demographic of Georgians & Eastern Europeans. A line to the bakery, adjacent to the cafe, to purchase fresh bread. Simple, casual decor in the cafe. Chill Georgian music playing in the background. Our waitress was accommodating, food was brought out quickly. Adjaruli khachapuri $12/$15 small/large, was the best adjaruli khachapuri I've ever had. Plenty of gooey cheese, fresh and delectable bread, great ratio of cheese to bread. Very filling--split this and you both will be full for the rest of the day. Sad that they no longer do the Yelp check in promotion. Taking off stars for the smelly bathroom. Staff smoke in there, and I though I'd suffocate from spending a few minutes in that tiny place. I started going dizzy from how heavily fumed it was. I reeked of cigarette smoke the whole day afterwards. How hard is it to take a smoke outside, in the fresh air? read more

Generally good and tasty Georgian food. Best to go with a group of people with whom you can share everything. Their pear flavored soda is a large bottle best shared with others, but it's also very sweet. We couldn't finish it. Best to sit indoors because the outdoor seating is on the street with high and fast traffic. Someone trying to park their car also bumped into the shed we were eating in and rocked the whole structure. It felt very dangerous to eat out there. We were also exposed to lots of smokers while eating outdoors, so it made the dining less enjoyable. Our waiter was very pleasant and attentive. Overall I enjoyed the food here and thought it was very authentic. Our waiter didn't speak much English, which was fine, but I also couldn't find him half the time. We ordered this garlic chicken dish at his recommendation-- the sauce was delicious but the chicken was a tad dry. I've had the khachapuri here before, but on this occasion, our megruli khachapuri tasted distinctively like a souped-up Dominoes pie, in the best way possible. A bit on the heavy side for a summer day, but thankfully accompanied by ocean breeze. The sour cherry juice was amazing - overly sweet, but somehow with a highly addictive tartness as well. Best Georgian food in Brighton beach! About 10 minutes walk up to Neptune, so it's not on the beach, but just a few minutes' walk north of the Brighton beach Q station. We recommend the pkhali appetizer, which is three big balls of vegetarian spreads. Goes well with any of the khachapuri breads, which are big enough to share between four people. For a vegetarian entree, we loved the Qotnis lobio, a hot bean stew. Try the tarragon soda! You can eat very well here for under $20 per person. There's a bakery in the other half. This was, remarkably, my first time having a proper sit-down Georgian meal since I visited Tbilisi four years ago. This highly anticipated meal at Tone Cafe more than lived up to my expectations. We ordered the pkhali trio and a half serving of bread to start, as well as the khinkali dumplings with pork. By checking into Yelp, we also got a complimentary small khachapuri bread. Our order was more than enough for two people. The phkali trio, which comes with spinach, green bean, and eggplant mixes with ground walnuts and spices, was absolutely delicious. The fresh parsley and pomegranate seed toppings made all the difference. Eaten as a spread with the warm bread, the phkali have a nice heft that for one person could easily be a meal. We thoroughly enjoyed the khinkali dumplings. Our waitress helpfully suggested pork, rather than lamb, as the filling. Indeed, the pork broth was very flavorful. She also suggested that we eat the dumplings with our hands and biting into it carefully so as to not squirt the broth all over. Though larger and spiced more strongly, these were reminiscent of Shanghainese pork dumplings. We would happily return to Tone Cafe to try more dishes. Review is for pickup/take out. Food was opened and tasted 20 mins after pickup lamb Shashlik/kebab was pretty dry and was not cooked on charcoal or wood. It shouldnt be called shashlik if it is cooked on a gas or electric grill. Lamb 'shashlik' is 4/10 Adjaruly is questionable at best. I asked my adjaruly with 'two egg yolks'. You can see what we got. Lovely, small Georgian restaurant with friendly service and hearty portions. A little walk from the Brighton Beach subway stop walking away from the beach and the hubbub. Prices much more reasonable than Georgian restaurants in Manhattan, and the food was just as delicious, if not more so. I was too hot to feel like drinking wine, but there is a good selection of Georgian wines. I will be back in the colder weather to try some. I ordered a Ajaruli Khachapuri to go, along with a smaller cheese bread. (I don't recall the name, but the nice lady recommended it for children - maybe they aren't excited about the runny egg, she said.) Now, I had to wait a bit because the oven was full, but wowee was that amazing. I had a few fresh bites before spilling the yolk all over myself while walking to the train. (not ideal for travel), but it was even a hit 40 min later when I was home sharing it (and the bread for kids). Can't wait to go back again and try a few other things. read more

Back in the day this place was just a tiny store front with a giant ceramic thing sticking out of the floor.. a giant pit that is a special Georgian bread oven. They make this bread that is in the shape of a Georgian sword. It yields a loaf that if you prefer the heel of the baguette, offers exactly what you want.. lots of crusty goodness. So I forgot about this little bakery years ago when I moved to jersey. A fellow yelper was posting this place! Looked like my little Georgian spot was all grown up... they knocked down the wall and took over the place next door! Added tables... and an expanded menu! In truth it's still the bread that has me coming back... but with my baby girl's first birthday approaching I need a joint to bring the Russian family together to break bread.. and I can't think of a better loaf to please everyone. Hello, I'm obsessed with this place and would like them to cater my wedding, the births of any children I have, and also my funeral. I forced my friends to schlep out to Tone Cafe and I would absolutely do it again. What to order (from someone who is by no means an expert in Georgian food but really good loved every single dish): - Chakapuli: the tarragon flavor in this is SO strong and SO good, I wanted to drown in the broth - Adjaruli Khachapuri: not gonna lie, our waiter rolled his eyes at us when we ordered this, but I really can't not get the boat full of cheese and butter. And oh wow, it was really good. - Khinkali: so juicy! Really peppery! Absolutely enormous ! - Chankhokbili: super flavorful chicken!! - bread basket: no explanation should be needed for this. We had so so much fun as people who don't have a lot of experience with Georgian food -- it was a really fun cuisine to try!!! -- and everything was so incredibly delicious. I enjoy Georgian food and the eats here were pretty good, and they offer a Yelp check-in offer for a free kachapuri bread! The harcho soup was hot and flavorful, went great with the bread. The roasted potato and mushroom dish was rustic and hearty, good vegetarian option. I'd get the eggplant dish next time instead, though. They have a good variety of Georgian wines and beers, so be sure to add one on to complement the cuisine. However, the service leaves something to be desired. Had I not been accompanied by someone who speaks Russian, I probably would have left. Server took his time approaching our table, we had to initiate placing an order, multiple reminders for water. This is a true hidden gem. It's open since 2000, and we just discovered it. Amazing everything!!!! Although it is quite a small place, you will definitely enjoy it's ambiance , and what is more important it's cuisine , authentic Georgian cuisine. Sometimes, the insanity that is living in NYC gets to me. Just the psychic energy required to get from point 'A' to point 'B' can sap even the perkiest girl's spirit, let alone that of cynical me. Our server suggested we eat this slathered with a trio of Pkhalis, aka various vegetable spreads pureed with ground walnuts. We decided to go for it, and while tasty enough, I wouldn't say this is a must. We had a ton of it left over, too. Definitely better shared with a big group. And since I can never resist the lure of doughy parcels filled with stuff, we got some Lamb Khinkalis. These HUGE, purse-like dumplings, six to an order, reminded me of Shanghainese XLB since they were filled with soup, along with the aforementioned meat. Their wrappers were ridiculously thick, imo. Hubby was impressed, though, that the lamb filling didn't taste overly gamey. Our server was really sweet, even giving us a tutorial on how to eat our 'cheeseboat bread.' I think she used her not inconsiderable charm to upsell us, but whatever. I was amused when she asked us if we wanted to order some Georgian wine. It was 10 am. I would've contemplated it, but hubby vetoed the idea. Curses. Oh yeah, we got some regular Khachapuri to freeze for later, so the jury's still out on that. My friend and I came here and seated ourselves at one of the few tables. It took forever for someone to notice we were there, and then we finally got menus. We shared the phkali trio (three different dips) and they were excellent, though not served with bread, the adjaruli khachapuri...AMAZING, and a napoleon for dessert (skip it). Don't forget to get wine! Georgians love their wine. Good prices, awesome food, pretend the waiters don't exist because they pretend you don't exist. Solid.
