I had a delicious dinner here catching up with friends, and I highly recommend coming with a few people to share dishes family-style. - Khachapuri - a must-order! The server will help mix the cheese boat, and the cheesy egg mixture becomes the perfect balance of rich and salty gooeyness. - Mkhali Trio - nice spread sampler that tastes exactly like the vegetables in the description. Sadly the dish only came with 3 tiny pieces of cornbread, and it would've been nice if they included more bread with it. - Beef & Pork Khinkali - huge dumplings, which reminded me a bit of soup dumplings. The tops were quite doughy (not sure if they're actually edible or meant to be eaten?), but the filling is juicy and tasty. - Chanakhi - a nicely spiced, warm, and bold lamb stew. Went during lunch, and its honestly the perfect low key vibe with charming ambience and cozy food and scents. Service was chill and friendly without being overbearing or hyper-salesy. The lamb stew was lovely, though there was more vegetables than lamb I felt like, and the lamb itself was on the drier side. The veggies were amazingly juicy and flavorful, which aided the dish as a whole. They didnt have rice it seemed, so I got their cornbread instead of the regular bread (being gluten intolerant). Came here on a Saturday with a group of 5. we were sat promptly. The table setting and the interior was very chic and modern. We got the Ubani salad, Adjaruli Khachapuri, the dumplings, lamb stew, and the honey cake to share. My friends also ordered Georgian lemonade both in grape and in tarragon flavors. The salad was refreshing with a massive barrata. The khachapuri was so good. The staff mixed it for us and taught us how to eat it. The cheese and the spinach filling was flavorful but not greasy or dense. The lamb stew was also delicious. The dumplings are fun to eat - they're like massive soup dumplings with a handle to grab onto. The honey cake is a must try! It's dense, chewy yet crunchy. It's also not super sweet. My Georgian friend brought me here and we had an excellent meal from start to finish. First of all, this is my Georgian friend's favorite Georgian restaurant in the entirety of NYC so of course I had to let him take the lead in ordering. The chef clearly pours his heart and soul as well as his artful expertise into crafting his dishes, and honors authentic Georgian flavors while delivering it in a way that makes you feel taken care of. Authentic Georgian cream soda was delicious, and a cultural experience. The platter of different dips with Georgian bread was delicious - a mix of eggplant, cheese, dips made from beets and other fresh ingredients. and the special khachapuri variant with kidney beans and cheese. I've never had Georgian food before and this was such a wonderful introduction to all the different flavors, spices and types of dishes. We came with a group of 8 at 6:45 on a Tues night with reservations which we're glad we did because the restaurant quickly filled up. To drink I love wine so I wanted to try some Georgian wine. Unfortunately I tried their amber (more funky and fermented flavor), their white and their red and didn't enjoy any. Very dry overall without any specific nuances of flavors. So I ended up getting their Georgian lager which was delicious! For food we got sooo much. We ordered the Georgian traditional salad, the eggplant rolls, Mkhali Trio (beet, pumpkin and spinach flavors), Adjaruli Khachapuri (bread boat with cheese, egg and butter), kupati (Georgian style sausage), chicken in pomegranate sauce, Chanakhi (lamb stew), cauliflower with walnut sauce and khinkali (lamb and a beef and pork - essentially Georgian version of soup dumplings). Standouts for me were: - traditional salad (creamy texture from the walnut paste, vinegar and oil and really unique flavor and textures but refreshing as well) - eggplant rolls (had a walnut fenugreek garlic paste that was interesting and well cooked eggplant) - chicken with pomegranate sauce (well cooked chicken and the homemade sauce was not too sweet) - Adjaruli Khachapuri (who doesn't like cheese, eggs and butter? WOW, absolutely delicious meal! I have never had Georgian food but I will definitely be coming back to try more of their menu. My friend and I got the kachapuri to start with and that already left me in shock and a food coma because it was just perfect. And then we had the lamb stew where the lamb was cooked to absolute perfection! The restaurant itself is a bit small so I recommend making a reservation in advance (yes, even on a weeknight) but it's very cozy inside. That alone should warrant four stars! But also, the food is quite good. The Lobiani is huge, cheesy, carby, and beany--absolutely delicious. The Adjaruli Khachapuri was a tad salty, but otherwise perfectly done. The Chanakhi was a perfect stew, while the beef and lamb Khinkali were both bursting with broth and flavor. I made the mistake of getting the Honey Cake for the table, and remembered one bite in that I don't actually like Georgian honey cake that much (too dry)--but Ubani says theirs is made in-house, so that's something, right? Came here to celebrate my birthday with a group of 14 and was so impressed by the speed and service of the restaurant. I've been here a couple of times with smaller groups and have always had great experiences, so was happy to be able to celebrate with such a large group. Appreciate that this place has a good amount of options for vegans and vegetarians as a lot of people in our group didn't eat meat. A nice place for a night out! I'll start with the negatives. We arrived 5 minutes before our reservation, but weren't seated until 25 minutes after. The staff pointed out our table and said we would be seated when the party was done, but took them 20 minutes to give them the check to encourage them to leave. We were seated outside and at times, it felt like they forgot about us. They ended up bringing us the wrong dish, but we ate it anyways because we weren't able to see a server for so long. It also took very long to take our order, nobody checked in if we wanted more food/drinks, and we had to flag someone down for the check. If you decide to come, make sure to get a table inside. Other than that, I thought the food was great. The khinkali especially stood out to me. We also ordered a sweet wine and loved it. It's a cute spot for a dinner with friends or a date. I was at this Georgian spot with a bunch of others a while back. The service was fine and appeared pretty impatient with another group who came in. The food here was alright and the ambiance was well a coffee shop. I'm not exactly sure why the average here is so high but this is also the neighborhood where Old Tblisi Garden is very high rated so I digress (then again that spot is better than this one which isn't saying much.) To drink I had a glass of one of the Kvevri/Qvevri. Kvevri refers to an ancient Georgian preparation of usually orange/skin contact wine and I tend to like the majority as they tend to have some minerality. From the Appetizers & Salads section, we got a few dishes. The Georgian Salad With Walnuts had tomato & cucumber salad, fresh herbs, walnuts, and homemade cheese sulguni and it was $12. The walnut sauce here was lighter than most other spots not having nearly as much garlic and it seemed sparse. The portion size was decent but I found the flavors bland and it was still one of the better dishes. The Beet Salad With Goat Cheese with marinated beets with raspberry cilantro sauce served on a corn bread topped with goat cheese for $14 was also alright. The presentation was nice and the goat cheese was fresh with there also being a lot of beets. The dressing was a tad sweet and I didn't mind that it was sparse. The flavors were fine but it was just from the mix and not from preparation. When in a Georgian spot, you order baked goods and that's usually Khachapuri and for most people that is the Adjaruli variant. Our host ordered the traditional version ($14) as well as one with spinach (which is a buck more.) Both refer to a boat shaped pie with blended cheese and a raw egg with some butter you mix it all together while the cheese is hot. The cheese is a mix of sulguni and imeruli and as per usual it is a delicious salty dish. It was a bit small but well flavored but I heavily prefer the one at the pretty close Cafedelia. The spinach one was decent. We got a couple main dishes. My favorite of the bunch by a mile was the Veal Chakapuli for $17 consisting of organic, grass-fed veal slow cooked with tarragon, sour plum, scallions, parsley, cilantro, and white wine. The meat inside was tender and there was plenty of it with a good soup base as well. I always like the sourness of this dish and this one didn't disappoint. The Khinkali are the Georgian equivalent of soup dumplings and there's a minimum of three orders (with each order being $3.50 available with either meat or cheese. As per the other dishes, this was alright and a bit bland. I found the filling more sparse and the meat wasn't as well flavored and the dough was a bit too thick even for this dish. Our final dish was the worst of the bunch. The Quail with Berry Sauce for $18 consisted of a single pan-fried quail with an alright sauce which I think was blackberry based. The sauce was decent and the accompanying salad was nice but the quail was very dry being overcooked and was tiny. I wouldn't recommend it at all being smaller than most of the appetizers and just not prepared well. I'm not sure if it was an off night or something but I disagree with virtually every review here. I love Georgian food and there are plenty good Georgian spots in the city but almost nothing here was good outside of the Chakapuli. Everything was either overcooked or bland. Super cute place for dinner in the West Village, a great spot for a date since it's a bit dark inside and candle-lit. Great wine selection and had Georgian orange wine. Not that big inside, but it was easy to get a table on a weekday night. Georgian traditional salad ($15) - this was quite simple, but I did like it. It was just tomato and cucumbers, but it was very refreshing and quite flavorful with the herbs. Adjaruli Khachapuri ($17) - this is the cheese boat that I associate with Georgian food. Small Georgian restaurant that had terrible service when I came here with my GF We split their cheeseboat and chicken dish, and they were very tasty, but the servers did not ever refill either of our water's or check in on us, and we eventually even had to go into the back of the restaurant and find a server in order to get our check. A nice Georgian restaurant with many of the classics that the cuisine has become known for in the city. Service was good, attentive and helpful our food, wine, and water without getting stuffy at all. Decor feels very west village with bits of Georgian specific decoration around, a good place for a group of friends or a somewhat casual date. We got the appetizer plate because it is frankly too hard to make decisions in a large group and everything on it was honestly really tasty. Their homemade cheese is really good, super milk and lactic acid forward and frankly miles ahead of most restaurants serving bland burrata with bread. The adjaruli khachapuri is the classic and done well here with fluffy but crisp bread and a satisfying but heavy center. We also got the Ubani special and megruli khachapuri which felt very reminiscent of, and apologies now for the simplification, a good bean quesadilla and a good cheese quesadilla respectively. Pretty good although my palate isn't really tuned to this sort of dish and I still could never imagine ordering and eating one of these on my own. The cauliflower with walnut sauce is pretty solid although I do feel like it would be even better with a crispy cauliflower as opposed to a pan roast. The chashushuli sounds simple, just slow cooked beef in tomato sauce but the sauce is just satisfyingly aromatic and savory. The beef is tender and cooked fairly well but fell to the background of the much more flavorful sauce. The Chanakhi funnily enough is kind of the reverse. The dish description is a long list of ingredients and application but the resulting sauce itself is just kind of mild and anemic compared to the chashushuli. The meat though was just quite a bit more savory and juicy; if I could have the chashushuli sauce and the chankhi meat, I'd be a happy camper. The khinkali meat was really intensely savory and juicy, really quite good although the dumpling skin at the top of the twist was underdone by virtue of its thickness. I suppose this is technically a solvable problem by just eating the pouch portion of the dumpling but that just seems wasteful and I'd really rather see that a restaurant not serve underdone dough. An absolutely massive stinker of a dish though was the chicken in pomegranate sauce. Maybe this is how it's traditionally made but the pomegranate sauce felt thin and watery, a bit tart and sweet but lacking in savoriness and texture. The chicken itself was also overdone, so much so that my friend considered it inedibly dry. Thankfully the honey cake and napoleon were both satisfying. The honey cake was tender and sweet but had a noticeable amount of honey flavor and the napoleon was crisp with nicely defined layers. Overall food here was pretty solid but the problems we had were deeply unpleasant. Do get the breads and appetizers but the main dishes were just too inconsistent to put this as a strong recommendation. read more

I thought the khinkali was better than other Georgian places I've had bc juicier and bigger but personally still not a fan of this dish in general. We also tried chanakhi (lamb stew) bc server recommended it and it was good. Nothing particularly unique but it was great on a cold day and all the meat and veg were super tender and flavorful. Prices are kinda typical for this area of NYC aka a bit pricey for the portions but I'm used to it now tbh. I'm not sure khachapuri is what immediately comes to mind as light cafe fare to pare with an iced coffee, but somehow it works at Cafe Ubani. I had the adjaruli khachapuri (the typical breadboat variety) with mint mixed in, which added a nice bit of freshness to an otherwise very cheesy, very bready meal. My only regret is that we came without a reservation and ended up in the heated porch, which was mostly fine but just a little chilly when servers needed to come in and out. Service was great--very friendly and, as a relative Georgian food amateur, I appreciated the full tour of the menu we received as there's a fair amount on offer. The adjaruli khachapuri is much written about but was delicious, we genuinely could have had a second. The veal chakapuli was a great warming stewy soup on a chill night and the sour plum really brings it to the next level. Lamb Khinkali to close out the savory section was a must. The honey cake is fantastic--I don't fully know what I'm talking about so it's hard to say if it's a good version of honey cake, but it's definitely real good. We had a bottle of orange wine (the Chinebuli in the pic) that was refined and natural. Clearly a well made vintage on a very Georgian wine list, which tied the whole meal together nicely. The Chashushuli (beef stew) was flavorful and juicy, so that made up for the subpar khinkali. The restaurant is cutely decorated for the holiday season and there was a good amount of seating as well. It wasn't until we sat down that I noticed the menus and their enticing selection. I'm sad that I already had dinner prior bc I would have loved to have eaten here instead.
