I found this place over a year ago. Door Dash delivered. I loved their Special Fried Rice which had a kind of mildly sweet floral aftertaste that was soooo good! Their egg flower soup was the best I've ever had. It was remarkably delicious with lots of wonderful things in it. Then they closed early summer for "kitchen repairs." I kept checking to see when they were opening. I sent a friend by to get us some food for the first time since the "kitchen repairs." They told my friend they were closing because they had a fire in the kitchen and didn't know when they'd be open again. When I called to tell them they needed to note the closure on their website, I could not understand the gal on the phone. I had also found out they no longer had delivery! I believe it changed hands last summer and I haven't tried it since. Very disappointing. read more

I was in town visiting relatives and they told me about this new ownership of an old restaurant I was not fond of when I used to live here in Salem. We ordered the spring rolls and fried dumplings to share and both were delicious. I ordered the spicy tonkatsu ramen as my main course and loved the texture of the noodles and it was served with sliced pork and 1/2 boiled egg. My only regret about this soup is that it was too spicy for my palette but that's my fault as I didn't tell the waitress medium spicy. I wish they would rename the restaurant as I wonder how many residents don't know about the new ownership and do not eat here because the food previously wasn't all that good. Anyways I encourage those if you who like Ramen to give this place a chance. My entire family enjoyed their meals. read more

This place has changed owners from the days when I remember it being family owned. Gone are the most amazing pot stickers now replaced by run of the mill fried dumplings. We also had sesame balls which were quite tasty. The rest of our meals were rather unremarkable. Husband said his Bento Box was fine, but bland, Sister indicated her Tonkatsu Ramen had way too much seaweed in it to the point that was all she could taste, and my chicken Yakisoba was primarily noodles with dry chicken bites. The tea was served in coffee mugs and tasted terrible. First time returning to Salem in many years, our nostalgia visit was disappointing in that the Chinese menu has been replaced by Japanese. I ordered noodles and shrimp, I counted 5 shrimp and the plate full of noodles, no taste either, I had to add plenty of salt and sauce to make it somewhat edible. My son order the thicker noodles and at the bottom it was full of some watery sauce. He had to add extra chicken but still the pieces were very few. I pretty much figured to try this place when Bon Japan across the street was closed, which is where a few friends prefer to eat in proximity to Willamette U's campus. It's really low key and the dining area was empty when I went in - the gambling area seemed pretty active though. - Friendly: The staff/owner (I think) served me and was very gracious. Thank ya big big. - Apps & Soup: The potstickers and the egg flower soup were probably the best outta the things I ate, and they were pretty middling. Cons: - Entree: I ordered the egg foo young and the pork fried rice which were middling at best. I wasn't a big fan of the texture of the sauce surrounding the egg foo young, which in turn made the egg foo young... slImey. Pork fried rice had a strong porky flavor, which I like, but the rice didn't taste fresh. While visiting Salem a relative recommended this place for ramen noodles. We ordered spicy tonkotsu ramen soup, pork fried rice, and bbq pork. All were delicious. The noodle soup was a bit too spicy for us but the broth was rich and flavorful, absolutely perfect on a cool rainy evening. The fried rice has the "wok" heat and very tasty. The restaurant was clean and service friendly and fast. We recommend this place and will definitely return. Had lunch with a couple of friends today, first time eating at this restaurant, so I don't know about the previous owner reviews, but this was a delightful find, very bright and clean . We loved the decorations on the wall and windows. I ordered the bbq pork ramen, my other 2 friends order the Kimchi ramen special and the 3rd order was the teriyaki chicken Bento. All of the dishes were good but a little on the salty side. I ordered the Iced lemon tea which was delicious (I love Iced tea), my friends had sodas. We also had an order of pot stickers to share. The pot stickers were a little over fried but had good flavor inside the wrapping. We all enjoyed what we ordered so we'll definitely be back. Since I have had a difficulty finding a good Chinese restaurant in Salem, I want to come back and try the Chinese food they have to offer since the menu looks promising! read more

I got an order to go, it was late at night almost closing time. Our food was exceptional, fresh, piping hot, delicious, loaded with meats, seafood and vegetables! The lo mein had so much flavor, and the portions were perfect for two people or three even 9.5 out of 10. We also ordered the special fried rice 9.8 out of 10 so so yummy (I loved all of the vegetables, the peas, carrots, etc.) There's a new dish on the menu cold noodles. Refreshingly light clean crisp flavor. it was recommended that I get the hot chili oil and that literally put it over the top -amazing Highly recommend I will be ordering these again -very soon. Tong King Garden has been one of the Chinese staples of Salem for the better part of 25 plus years. In the last few decades that were ruled by notable Salem powerhouses, certain names come to mind: Shum's, Ming's, Kwan's, yet it is Tong King who has managed to outlast them all. There is no secret. Cheap prices and unpretentious Chinese American fare will keep many afloat for a long time and Tong's King fits the bill. Though it's not the most attractive looking place, locals who have kept this joint alive know the food goes far beyond the decor. It's unassuming, dated exterior keeps it genuine and less gimicky like the rest of the Chinese options in the city. Unless they are looking to expand, let's hope they don't go overboard in renovations since the look is part of it's charm. People who are intimidated by the unfriendly outside, should know it's totally friendly on the inside. The owner and the staff are gracious and amiable, always willing to accommodate anyone and everyone who enters the restaurant. Having known them for years, it's not hard to say they're some of the nicest people I've met. I have no doubt many great experiences here can be attributed to their stellar service. And of course the food. Let's not get carried away and assume they're all for the Chinese style banquet with food fit for only authentic palates, that's just simply not the case. But Chinese American lovers are sure to love what they have to offer and for such dirt cheap prices. Last time I checked, lunch special combinations here ran for a little less than $6 for a good heaping portion of food. Dinner is definitely recommended as well, though they only have a handful of tables, all of which are group friendly. Shoot for a family style Szechuen beef or a classic almond chicken. I've been impressed with their variety of chow meins and can vouch for a decent fried rice. The food is never overly greasy and the portions are usually just right. The next time I'm back in town, I'm definitely coming back. Friendly faces and easy prices will hopefully keep Tong's King around for a very long time. read more

So after reading some of the reviews I was skeptical to try this even though it is close to where I live. I am glad I did try it - firstly the staff was very transactional at first but once we showed we are nice customers and good patrons they were very friendly. Food was really good we got some pot stickers as an appetizer and they were great! Meal was also very good and tasted fresh with good flavors. We will definitely go back! Wow! What a find. From California to visit my nephew and his wife over the weekend 3/11/23. Didn't think it would be possible to find good ramen noodle soup or any anything asian compared to SoCal. This place would be a great competitor to those in Los Angeles area but at affordable prices. First this place is under new ownership, new cooks, and new menu. The more recent ratings near/about March 2023 has 5 STAR rating and reviews from its customers. Items tried: Spicy Pork Tonkatsu Ramen noodle soup, Spicy Beef noodle soup (chose rice noodle), BBQ Pork Fried rice, Gyoza, Egg rolls, BBQ Pork. All the orders came out in timely manner, tasted deliciously fresh cooked. The appetizers all had its own unique sauce to dip. My family thoroughly enjoyed their meal. Residence of Salem and surrounding areas, please give this place a try, you will not be disappointed. I've been coming here every year on Christmas eve for as long as I can remember. Since I was a wee lass, and ordered cheeseburgers before I learned to like Chinese. So - this place has a special place in my heart. We always order family style and I always LOVE it (it's also probably the only time per year I eat Chinese food). Mushu pork, sweet and sour chicken, potstickers...it's like amazing, delicious greasy takeout but for Christmas. Amazing! And it's C-H-E-A-P! Last time I went the bill for 8 people was like $50, and we were all STUFFED. Great little place, it's not winning any awards but it gets the job done and has never failed me :) Let me clarify - this is not a super nice place. Here is the thing. Noting i still grew up in Montana, where food was meat (beef, venison, chicken) potatoes, idaho variety and veggies.. salad, carrots, onions, celery and tomatoes and spices were garlic, salt and pepper. So... we coveted and believed to be the BEST the Chinese places we had access to. In Billings for years a place called Wongs and then later a place called Golden Phoenix were the 'real authentic chinese food".. But the truth is the sweet and sour sauce was homemade and my mom and i spent years trying to figure out how to make it 'like wongs'.. And the first time i tried chinese food that was not s&s pork/chicken and lo mein was the golden phoenix's mongolian beef. So addicting.. (probably was the msg!) but in over 20 years i have traveled all over the PNW looking for 'real mongolian beef' and i gave up years ago.. But i still like it, regardless even though it has NEVER EVER been as good. I ordered a combo that included Mongolian beef and enjoyed the hot and sour soup (excellent!) and pot stickers that were heavy, hot and good! Then my order came.. i peered down at my plate..... Could it BE???? It looked the same... thin sliced beef at top some fresh rice noodles, sliced green onions.. a strikingly familiar scent..... My nose delighted, my eyes proclaimed the possibility... i picked a little up on my fork, blew on it because it was VERY HOT and put a taste in my mouth.. I am ashamed ( a little) to say tears welled up in my eyes and i realized for the first time since the last time, i was tasting Mongolian Beef From Heaven.... it is the SAME RECIPE, cooked the same way... i wiped my tears, said a prayer of gratitude and dug in.. LOW Cost.. huge portions and the best mongolian beef in Oregon, Idaho and Washington! don't let the age of the place fool you.. Tong King is very much worth a try! My boyfriend and I decided to eat at this scary seeming establishment only after I had lived just down the street from it for months. It was good. Really good. But then.... I decided I hated Chinese food for the most part, and the only thing I would ever order from there again would be the fried shrimp and egg noodle soup. Don't get me wrong--the food is really good and my man and I frequented the place several times a week for nearly a year--seriously. He still loves it, but I'm done. Give it a try. I tried to make a lunch order (combo F) and substitute General Tso for Sesame Chicken. On the lunch menu they the General Tso is 6.50 and the Sesame Chicken is 6.25. I thought that substitution wouldn't be an issue even if I had to pay an extra 50 cents or so. However, she wanted to charge me an extra 4 dollars to make the substitution. Needless to say I didn't go for that. It's unfortunate because I work less than a mile from this place and they won't be getting my business any time soon. read more

Chinese restaurants in Salem tend to come and go with great frequency, and yet Tong King Garden - which was in business when my parents moved to Salem in the mid-80s, and looked old back then - had never been on our restaurant radar until yesterday. It was too dark, too decrepit, too hard to tell if it was even open or not - had we ever seen people going in and out? As it turns out, not only does Tong King Garden do a respectable business, but the food is easily the best Chinese Salem has to offer. To out of towners, that statement may not mean much. This is still old-school Americanized Chinese, and all the usual dishes are present and accounted for: sweet and sour pork, General Tso's chicken, the kid's meal hamburger. Nevertheless, if you are willing to play a little culinary Where's Waldo with the long, dense menu, there are a few surprises to be found. Szechuan dishes are scattered amongst the usual Cantonese fare, including a delicious sizzling chicken and shrimp dish that soon disappeared from our plates. Salemites who have had the misfortune of biting into a frozen-in-the-center appetizer at other Chinese places in town will be delighted by Tong King's homemade wontons, cooked juicy with plenty of fragrant spices. Even the obligatory dish of egg drop soup was a little more interesting than usual. The only aspect of the meal that left me wanting was the lack of hot spices in the food, and even that was mostly my fault. Remember, kids: this is Americanized Chinese food, so make sure to order your food one degree of hotness higher than you think you'll like. If you like it medium, order it hot; if you like it hot, order it "Chinese hot" with a wink and a smile. It's easy to see why Tong King Garden has lasted so long in Salem. Most of the menu options are safe as safe can be, but the quality and freshness of the food puts it above all the microwave pork bun joints that limp through a few fallow months or years in this town before vanishing. If you're a long-time Salemite who's spent all these years wondering what the deal is with that scary-looking Chinese restaurant on 12th, now is as good a time as any to give this place a try. Waitress was rude. First Chinese restaurant where hot tea was not provided/ offered to guests. My husband ordered a root beer which he never got, and so we both had water. Ordered sweet and sour pork, diced almond chicken, fried shrimp. My husband ordered general tso's chicken, fried rice, and BBQ pork. The egg flower soup was bland and barely hot. My dinner came out first, the shrimp was fried crispy and was hot, no dipping sauce was provided, had to ask for it, the sweet and sour pork was hot, but the sauce was neither sweet nor sour, tasted like tomato soup out of a can, very unpalatable. Diced almond chicken was way over salted, and the fried noodles were stale. Didn't finish my dinner. Very unsatisfying. My husbands dinner came 5 minutes after mine. The general tso's chicken wad not spicy, the pork fried rice was greasy and barely warm. The BBQ pork was okay was all they had to do was take it out of the package and put it on the plate. This Tong King Garden is a far cry from the restaurant run by the 2 older Chinese ladies several years ago. It's been remodeled and a video lottery, game room had been added, and the food has suffered under the new owners. The food used to be good, hot, prepared well, and service was quick and pleasant.
