I always saw people eating the puddings here online, but never got to try it because it was out of the way. I finally got to try this spot yesterday since my boyfriend and I got dinner at Jang su jang. I was so excited to see tong sui when we turned into the plaza. We came about an hour before closing and there were still people coming in after us to order. You order from the kiosk available inside then they pack your order and call out your name when it's ready. We ordered the durian coconut pudding, mango sticky rice and mango coconut pudding. The durian coconut pudding was delicious, it was personally a 10/10 for me and I would get it a million times over. The durian was sweet and creamy whereas the coconut pudding was more mellow balancing out the creation perfectly. The mango sticky rice my boyfriend got was alright. We were disappointed that the rice was bland, but it wasn't bad. The concept of it was a great idea, but it's not how we like it at Thai restaurants. This is something that is a great idea that could be improved. The mango in here was sweet and flavorful though. We got the mango coconut pudding for our friend, but I'm assuming it tastes amazing based off of the mango we tried in the mango sticky rice. Plus, he immediately knew what he wanted to order when we asked him if he wanted anything from here. My wife is a regular of Tong Sui. One of her to go locations for a good drink, along with her co-worker, I figured that I'd give it another shot--but this time instead of the pudding, I'd try the drink. The drinks are good. Quite good. The drinks, you can taste, are well made and very good. We ordered the Nutty Noir for me and my wife ordered the Coco Mango and hers was very good too. I particularly liked my Nutty Noir. I still think the pudding may be difficult to justify the value and worth, but even at a premium, the drinks are good. Really not much of service as the staff is more focused on making your orders, as they're placed on a kiosk--which is what every place seems to be doing. So far my favorite has been the persimmon. I also only go here for the coconut pudding. I grab a couple jars and always too full to try anything else. The texture of the pudding is so perfect. My favorite is always the first bite. I also notice they last a couple days in the fridge if needed. My only gripe is I wish they had some program where if you bring a certain number of jars back, you get a free coconut pudding. Kinda like what Melo Melo does. Honestly, I felt like the dessert at tongsui is pricey since most of their puddings are $8-$12 a jar but now I think it is worth it as a once-in-a-while treat. I usually get the signature coconut pudding since it's the cheapest out of all of them and it hits the spot. I've also had the earl grey pudding as well and it's a very faint but fragrant layer of earl grey, and it doesn't overpower the coconut pudding at all. Super refreshing and tastes like I'm eating/drinking out of an actual coconut. The inside is super small. When I came to order, there wasn't anyone inside and I took my time scrolling through their kiosk. But after I finished ordering, there were two groups of people who came in, and it was uncomfortably packed while I was waiting for my puddings to be ready. 3.5 stars. I dropped by on a Saturday afternoon after lunch at Daeho and there was no line. I got the black sesame coconut pudding while my husband got the durian. I definitely had some sticker shock at $10 a jar and don't feel these are worth that price. Something like $7 a jar feels more appropriate. I agree with a previous reviewer who said that the flavors are so light that they're almost imperceptible. As much as I love sweet desserts, I really don't like them *too* sweet and appreciate treats like this that are much more reserved. But at Tong Sui, the pendulum has swung too far to one side. There was more flavor in the coconut half of the pudding than the black sesame, but not by much. It was really a shame because there's a ton of promise here, but the execution really leaves something to be desired. And while the black sesame pudding was the right balance of airy and dense, the coconut pudding wasn't as successful with its texture. It started off a bit like panna cotta but by the bottom of the jar it was a bit more watery and the texture reminded of something somewhat gross that I'd rather not type out here. It actually put me off of finishing the very last bit of the pudding. I tried my husband's durian pudding out of curiosity because I've heard some not-so-positive things about durian, and while I definitely wasn't a fan, I was also expecting something with a much stronger flavor given the fruit's reputation. Even something as pungent and divisive as durian was less offensive here because of how subtle the flavors of everything are. I really wish I liked this more, because the combination of black sesame and coconut is outstanding and those are two of my favorite flavors. Store is small, no tables inside but there's 1 or 2 small tables outside. Parking is easy and in a shared lot. Theres a kiosk to order from. Most of the pudding is around $10-$11, and I'm not sure I really understand the hype. My friend and I got the Christmas Fantasy ($10.95), which was matcha on the bottom and strawberry on too and the Persimmon Mochi ($10.95). I actually thought the texture would be a lot stiffer and more hard tofu like but it was more like really soft tofu. The matcha was very light and I couldnt really taste anything besides coconut pudding. The strawberry layer on top wasnt even pink, let alone red. It was almost like there was no strawberry layer. And there were 2 slices of unripe strawberries on top that were more white than red as well. Just very different from the advertised photo overall. Really disappointed. The persimmon mochi was better and pretty good, but still definitely not worth almost 11 bucks. Overall, kinda ok but wouldn't come back. read more
