I was looking for places to try around Mount Dora and I was pleasantly surprised by this option. Not only was it delish, but the restaurant is cozy, nicely decorated and the staff is friendly and attentive. When it is your first time dining in, they will give you a sample of their chowder and it sure is a nice touch! I went for the chowder and the crab cakes (meaty and delish) but if you did not consider the chowder as you get seated, that sample may change your mind. I will definitely stop by when I come back to the area and try other things!

Hands down THE best clam chowder I've ever had! our server was very apologetic about the wait as the restaurant was crowded but repeatedly assured us we were not forgotten. we loved the rustic setting and coziness of the place. other seafood options looked amazing and tempting, will definitely re visit!

Such a cute place and not on the main road but right next to the park. Easy peasy to walk to. We sat outside because we had our pup. The server was so accommodating and brought out water for our girl. He had recommendations and we went with it! We really enjoyed everything we had. My favorites were the shrimp and hush puppies. The clam chowder goes without saying! Go and check this place out! Sooo yummy!!

The place is cute and there's parking! Food was great, service was great and also kid friendly. Lots of indoor and outdoors dinning. I got the fried shrimp and fish, it was fresh and super tasty! Also calm chowder soup was so good!!

It is no small wonder that this place has received several championships & awards for their clam chowder! It truly is delicious & very flavorful! The hush puppies were wonderful bite-size delights. Our server was simply perfect! My only complaint is that one of the employees (or a manager or owner maybe?) made us feel totally unwelcome. The moment we walked into the door he bellowed at us to wait outside & stay out of the way...and that they would get to us whenever they could. Wait what??? We almost left '& went elsewhere at that point! Meanwhile, another employee was in the process of cleaning a table and politely told us to have a seat. While we were having our lunch, that one gentleman (I use the term very loosely by the way) continued to be very abrasive with whoever walked in the door in the same manner as he approached us. Can you say "no soup for you?!?!" I understand that the place was very small & that they were very busy, but seriously, there has to be another way to handle crowd control than being outright rude to every patron. Sorry but that was unacceptable & uncalled for. That is the reason I have to give this otherwise awesome little place less than a 5 star rating it otherwise deserved.

After a small slow start this little powerhouse took off! Friendly staff Very tasty food (many choices) Small intimate venue (indoor and outdoor seating). Famous (delicious) chowder (ask for a sample)

I fall a little bit more in love with Mount Dora every day and places like Tony's Chowder House are the reason why. Although parking is spare, you absolutely want to stop by this small, charming, but EXCELLENT seafood spot near Historic Downtown. I stopped in for lunch today and (luckily) scored a parking spot in the back of the restaurant. I don't know how they do it here with such a tiny kitchen but the food is great. My Connecticut lobster roll was just about perfect with two delicious sides of fries (crunchy and hot) and possibly my new favorite cole slaw. The hush puppies were so good - I could have easily eaten at least four more. Delicious sweet tea to go with my meal and all the food was served on this lovely white plate in the shape of a fish - so cute! My order came out to $30 and my wonderful server (Lisa?) was both efficient and friendly. I was in and out in roughly 30 minutes, if that, full and happy to face the rest of my day. I will absolutely be back to try their cod and salmon and who knows what else because this place is great. FYI - if you're a fan of clam chowder you can buy cans of their award-winning brand here in the restaurant. Also, that bathroom was spotless - which is a good sign in any restaurant. Thank you, TCH, and see you again soon!

Stopped in to try this place since it already had good reviews. The clam chowder was excellent. I understand why it's won awards. Flavorful with tender pieces of clam. Not too thick or thin. Amongst us we also had a shrimp roll, grilled cod sandwich and blackened shrimp platter. Coleslaw was good. Not too Much mayo. Hush puppies were good--small and perfectly fried. Ambiance was kitschy and despite all the tchotchke decor, it was very clean. Very happy we stopped in and we will definitely be back.

What a great experience!! Tony Chowder House is located in the quaint town of Mt Dora, FL. The atmosphere inside and out is comfortable and relaxing. Tony, the owner provided amazing service. He was entertaining and made the the experience even better. Of course, we tried the chowder and it was simply amazing. It has even won awards..it a MUST TRY. The blacken fish cooked perfectly and delicious. Definitely worth a trip to try this little gem.

Small restaurant in downtown Mt Dora. Parking can be a bit of a challenge. 7 indoor tables and a few outdoor. Server was very slow to acknowledge us (15 minutes) but then service was great. I had the grilled shrimp entree with hush puppies. It was delicious. Sampled the clam chowder and it was excellent. Not a very robust menu and it was $18.99 for 8 shrimp and 7 hush puppies. Still I would go back and get a bowl of clam chowder.

The Southern burger was great, but I tossed off the raw onions as I absolutely hate them, and added the lovely pickled onions from my wife's salad, which gave the perfect amount of flavor and color. Don't you agree? Give me a LIKE if you do !!! The crepe was next level. Delicate crepe, very soft ripe bananas, sauce was not disgustingly sugary, and the vanilla ice cream was smooth and soft, not icy and sweet. Dunno what brand they use, or if they churn the cream fresh in-house, but it made my day.

Driving back to Georgia after a visit to the mouse and wanting to limit our exposure to the I-4…read moretraffic, we drove through the charming town of Mount Dora. There are lots of delightful restaurants there (according to yelpers) but many were located downtown and parking was hard to find so we decided to go to Fifth Avenue Streatery since we had driven by and there was lots of parking. All of which the tables are outside on a charming patio with lots of interesting decor. It was 11:30 so the day was pleasant and sitting outside was fine. Not sure how I would feel about that in August. Our waitress was Haley (guessing at the spelling) and she was bubbly and very attentive. The menu wasn't overwhelming and I always think that's a good sign that most of the food is being prepared fresh and not pulled from a freezer. My mom ordered the fish sandwich with tomato and cucumber salad. After ordering the Italian Haley said they were out of beef until the owner arrived so I went for the day's special which was a seafood basket: two pieces of fried fish, four huge shrimp and clam strips. Clam strips are not my favorite but these were very crisp and tasty. It was served with fries and cold slaw. We both agreed the food was very good. I asked for some cocktail sauce and after a few minutes she came back with saying she had to make some. It was fantastic, very horseradish forward which I loved. I am glad we couldn't locate our first two choices since we got to eat at this funky little place and have the best server in all of Mt. Dora.

The drinks were priced great and the soup and burgers were so good! But I went 01/10/2026 at 230pm (busy rush for a pub on a Saturday) and I ordered a burger and soup because they have a soup of the day each day, who doesn't love that. Well my soup came out quick and I was pleased with that, it was chicken orzo soup, so good! Well I start getting to the soup and thought oh wow they put cheese in here, didn't tell me it would have cheese and I'm rubbing it around in my mouth cause I like to taste my food you know? Well it wasn't cheese...... IT WAS SOMEONES CHEWED MINTY GUM IN MY MOUTH STUCK IN MY TEETH I got sick (in a napkin of course) and informed my server, ran to the bathroom some more getting sick and when I came back my server informed me I wouldn't pay for anything, I made a comment that maybe the dishwasher didn't do a good job but the server told me he wish that was the case that it was intended for an employee on break and he thought it was mine in the window and it wasn't, he apologized, well I took a couple shots of whiskey to kill the bacteria hopefully. I asked for a manger to come talk to me because I work in the food industry and I don't feel it was handled correctly, he informed me the manger was not there he had to text her to get the approval for the bill. So I was definitely taken back. I have never had anything like this happen to me and the two girls I was with also tasted the soup because I said it didn't taste right and they was literally given a bill for their 15$ burgers and I got a 10% card to hopefully come back. I have called twice to talk to a manger and have not gotten through to anyone, I've seen messages online to suspected owners and still nothing back, I was told the guy with the gauges in the kitchen is the one that did it, I woken up with a sore throat today and will be going to get tested and they will be informed of my medical bills by a lawyer. PS my friend ordered a burger Togo a few hours later for her aunt I went in to get the burger and pay with my 10% card and the short haired short server with glasses was seen laughing at the computer about the situation, I just don't think it was funny at all.

I went on a Tuesday evening and I was seated immediately. They have both tables, booths or a bar. The menu had a number of options, but not too many, letting me know they specialized in certain things. They provide a bib, gloves, and wipes, which was greatly appreciated. They also brought to my table a bucket to throw in skins or shrimp legs, etc. when ordering (I got the scallop, shrimp with no head, and sausage platter that comes with little potatoes). They brought my meal in a large bag tied up and a metal plate. I dumped the bag of goodness onto my plate - very unique. I appreciated being able to order from "no spice" to "burn your face off"! The food was tastey. The server was responsive. I am only providing four stars, though they were wonderful, because if how I got my leftovers. Unfortunately they dump what you didn't eat into another plastic bag with all the juices and spices. Now, I realize some may like that. But it did not appeal to me. Just give me a closeable-styrofoam, closeable container, and I can do it myself. But i would recommend going to this place for seafood.

WARNING: Be cautious when ordering the raw oysters, here. The server had a "I don't give a F…read moreattitude" when I had my first bite of half-dozen raw oysters. The one oyster I started to bite into was the WORST tasting I've had in a long time. It was gritty and tasted like it had died, before it was caught. I asked the server to let the manager or cook know this, as I was concerned for other customers' safety. She gave this look like it was me who was the problem. No manager bothered to come to our table, to ask me about it, either. She also scoffed at my reaction when she said that the Alaskan King Crabs market price went up to $92 / lb - which I thought was way overpriced for a place like Red Crab. So, I got the snow crab legs, which were excellent, as well as the boiled potatoes. The generous amount of butter had an off-putting flavor, but still went well with the crab legs. The corn on the cob sucked, as it was soggy, from clearly being kept in a warming oven or pot for too long. The cheesecake was small, but really good, although I did have to ask about desserts when the server was ready to give us the check. She was also slow in bringing out the dessert and updating our check, but nicer towards the end of the dinner. This is about the 5th time I've been to Red Crab - and just this location. They need to work on food quality consistency, better training on the servers, and take seriously when a customer nicely complains about raw oysters, that don't taste fresh and clean.
