We had a huge omelet, thick sliced Italian bread toast with homemade preserves, a pound of bacon, French toast made from Italian bread - 4 very large slices served with three fried eggs, and a coffee, for $27. It it was delicious, and we took more than half of it home. We saw the side of hash browns go past us. It was gigantic. A full plate, and it was an inch high over the entire plate. So I stopped here with some friends and knew the portions were big. They are BIG! So everyone's meals come out first and they are all normal size. Well mine comes out and it rediculous. The one pound bacon BLT was ok at best. My wife and I were in Michigan from California so we made the two hour drive to get this beast of a BLT. The bacon was very low quality which was expected. This is no exaggeration, if you get a half pound bacon burger don't be fooled because it's literally going to have a half a pound of fried bacon on the top of it also. What's funny about that is the menu only lists 1/2 pound ground beef burger, plus whatever toppings you want want. It doesn't even brag about the fact that they're going to put a half a pound of bacon on it. What blows my mind is the price is still only eight dollars for the burger. If you get an omelette it's going to fill up a 12 inch plate from end to end and to side. If you get a Reuben sandwich is going to fill up a 12 inch plate end to end and side to side. If you get an order of pancakes and bacon the pancakes themselves are going to fill up a plate end to end and side to side. The side order of bacon itself is going to fill up it's own plate end to end and side to side. For dessert if you get a slice of cake it's going to be an entire cake and is going to fit a 10" diameter plate end to end side to side.... You get my point about the portions now???? Everything I have ever ordered here is delicious. I've tried everything that I just listed in this review, over the years. What's even more killer about this place is that their prices on average are actually cheaper than most diners I go to. This place pumps out hundreds to thousands of people a day and they are quick quick quick. If you are ever cruising up the I-75 Corridor near Birch Run this is an absolute must place to stop!! The bacon was freezer burnt. They comped my sons meal because his portion of bacon was all freezer burnt and he couldn't eat it. My burger only had a few pieces of bacon that were freezer burnt and I was starving so I tried to eat it and got half way through and ended up spitting out my last bite. I left half my burger on the plate and when asked told the waitress that it had freezer burnt pieces of bacon in it and she said she would talk to a manager. She came back comping my sons meal but made me pay full price for mine. Maybe you should focus on the quality of the food instead of just piling it on like we are all at a feeding trough. Had to stop in to see what all the hype was about. I'll start off with the negatives and wrap up with positives. The restaurant was really dirty. There were chicken wings and food all over the floor. My wife said she went into the bathroom and there were 2 girls from the staff in there and after they finished in the restroom neither of them washed their hands. Pretty gross! After seeing this place on the Travel Channel and hankering hardcore for a BLT, my partner and I trekked an hour north to this establishment to try their "world famous" gluttonous BLT of the porkly Gods. On a Saturday night, this place was hoppin' with so many overweight patrons in camo and pajama pants you could have sworn this dingy diner was parked smacked dab next to Cabela's. At first glance, this place is dirty. It is staffed by ladies who just don't give a crap anymore. They've got 5 kids at home to make a living for and you not knowing that the folded up newspaper behind the condiments is the menu is just testament to the fact that you're a dumb tourist and your metropolitan attitude better not shine through. But I digress. We ordered the BLT and the chili cheese fries to share. Now, my partner is allergic to raw tomato so in the nicest, most innocent fashion we could muster, we asked her if it would be possible if they could just lightly sear the tomato. No, she says. No? You mean to tell me not any of the ten line cooks you have back there can just take the pre-sliced tomato and just throw it on the flattop for two whole whopping seconds? Love lost, I let this slide, and waited for my long-awaited sandwich to arrive. If you are expecting a nice hot BLT, go elsewhere. The bacon here is lukewarm at best. The entire pound was cold, tasteless (for bacon, that certainly is an accomplishment), and old. The "famous" bread was barely toasted, there was a negative smear of mayo, and the tomatoes tasted like air. As I begrudgingly tucked into this monstrosity, we waited another 7 or so minutes for our fries to come and when they did, I had to choke back a laugh. The chili cheese fries were all beans, tasteless and hard to eat. I don't come to a dive to eat chili cheese fries with a fork. I want mess, I want chili on my fries, not just beans on them. The whole "order bacon get a pound" is a revolting concept, but hey if that's what keeps this disgusting mess from bankruptcy, live and let live. We won't be back. Famous for their bacon, which is deep fried, tastes nothing like bacon, and looks and tastes more like a cross between canadian bacon and beef jerky. My wife's family stops here every time they come up north, and the food is uniquely huge, and awful. If you are the kind of person who will eat anything regardless of how awful it is and love to eat several pounds of starch and fat at every meal this is for you. Uniquely horrible. A crime against food, health, but well loved by the all you can eat crowd. PS, my wife says they have been busted "recycling" leftover bacon from one customer to another. read more

We went here on Black Friday for breakfast before venturing out to Bronner's. It's always packed, but the parking is sufficient and they are able to get people in and out quickly. Once inside, it's a cute little old diner, nothing fancy. They do sell buckets of chili and stew for those of you who might have a deer camp out that way. We ordered a biscuits and gravy and an omelette. Portion sizes are huge at diner prices, so come hungry! You can take the menu home as a souvenir. I'm conflicted on how to rate this place, as the food was surprisingly delicious. Huge portions! On the flip side, it is the dingiest most disgusting restaurant I've ever stepped foot in. As you can see from the photos, the menu and portions are gargantuan! I ordered the Deli Mix (pastrami, corned beef, 2 cheeses, deli sauce on grilled italian bread). Very tasty & surprisingly fresh ingredients. I was only able to eat half and still left the place feeling like I was going to have a heart attack. My grandfather ordered the monstrous head-turning Banana Split. What can I say, it's a gallon of ice cream with toppings piled high on a plate. I don't know how this place can make any money with such large portions. Now the negative: Absolutely filthy. We stepped inside the doors and the place smelled like a dead rotting animal. We walked to our table and my wife nearly slipped and fell on the floor - completely covered in what I'd imagine to be a mixture of spilled soda, bacon grease, and food remnants from guests a few nights before. I understand this is a "dirty-spoon-hole-in-the-wall diner", but the atmosphere alone made me lose my appetite. What can be said about Tony's that hasn't been said before. It's legendary. Some people say that size doesn't matter, but at Tony's size is what matters most. Everything here is big, bigger, and biggest. We were able to feed a family of 8 with about 5 breakfast meals and still have leftover bacon to put on our hamburgers for the next 2 nights. As far as quality goes, it's hit or miss. I personally love their 1 lb. servings of deep fried bacon, but many will complain that it's too chewy or undercooked. The toast and sandwich bread is huge, but lacks flavor. The eggs were just blah. You will go to Tony's because it is a restaurant most Michiganders brag about. It's one of our favorite talking points with the portion sizes guaranteed to shock most casual diners. Traveling up I-75 in Michigan? If so, you gotta visit this place! Right off of Interstate 75 at Exit 136, near the outlet mall, is this food lovers paradise! I had the opportunity to visit this establishment several years back when I was visiting family in greater Detroit. They make the 50+ mile pilgrimage on occasion and I have to say, I have never seen THAT much food on my plate, at a restaurant. EVER! The portions at this place are ENORMOUS! Seriously. I forget what I had at the time, but you could literally feed 2 or 3 people with what I ate. It was some kind of sandwich. I do remember, though, the people I was visiting ordered a banana split, and 3 or 4 people could share it and there still be some left over. Dead serious. If you have the chance, to visit, please do. It's an experience that you'll never forget! Don't forget to take the souvenir menu home with you, it's an interesting piece. Unfortunately I lost mine in a move about a year ago. Probably the stupidest concept for a restaurant: completely irrational portion sizes. The house specialty is a BLT made with a pound of bacon. Nothing else is special about it, just the amount of bacon. You can also get a 10 egg omelette or...well, you get the picture. Utterly asinine, but somehow it sells, as the word has spread far and wide that if you "go to Tony's and orser the BLT," your plate will overflow with bacon. You could apply this to any menu item at any restaurant ("Hey, go to Jack's and order the 'small' orange juice...they'll bring you a gallon of OJ! It's amazing!") Basic diner fare is served reasonably quickly, but the line of waiting gluttons crowding the entryway is a bit off-putting. read more

This is not the Tony's I grew up in Saginaw, but it was fun to come back. Still a but crazy and it was so busy the night we were there. The portion sizes have not changed since I was a kid. They are still obscenely large and I think three of us could have shared a single meal. The other thing that has not changed greatly is the menu. Goin' Up North: The U.P., Mackinaw Bridge, Milwaukee Bridge, Frankenmuth, Outlet Stores and Tony's. These are the things typical Michiganders think about when they head up I-75 to their cottage or campsite or hotel/resort for some recreation time. Tony's is always on my mind when I go up north, because I'm trying to work out a way to stop and partake of their food and not overdo it for the rest of my journey. It's not easy. I try to incorporate the bacon either with the huge breakfast with 4 or 5 eggs and a mass of hash browns, along with the toasted Italian Bread and home made Strawberry Jam or with the huge BLT with a large portion of hot crispy French Fries. I've had their Hot Turkey and Hot Beef Sandwiches covered with hot Gravy along with a load of mashed potatoes. I've tried their I\Ice Cream Sunday, which seems to be about a half gallon of frozen sweetness covered with a ton of syrup and whipped Cream. I guess this is another place where you either love it or hate it, but I find the service, the atmosphere and even the handful of candy the owner gives you as you settle up at the cash register a positive and entertaining experience. It's a Landmark to me and worth a try if you've never stopped at exit 136 and headed west for a couple hundred feet. Try it you might like it. I am. Tony's is a diner/dive that serves big portions with a number of gimmicky offerings. I finally took my teenage kids in for lunch on our visit to Michigan. Luckily, it wasn't too busy during their first visit and service was quite prompt, but my kids didn't care because their faces were in their phones. Half the fun of Tony's is watching the customers and the wood prep process. The bacon is deep fried and then held in a waiting basket so the bacon served may have sat for a little bit. Individuals have different responsibilities so food may come out of the kitchen at different times for orders at the same table (It's a diner!). The floors may be dirty. The staff may be tired (It's a diner!) If you have specific food requirements or allergies, go elsewhere (It's a diner!) It will be busy and loud (It's a diner!) I had the patty melt. It was large and the beef patty was cooked longer then I would have preferred. Two pieces of swiss cheese that cooked be tasted over the onion. My son had fried chicken which he enjoyed. My daughter had fried fish. The fish was most likely packaged, frozen but the fish was flaky and cooked well. And yes, we had leftovers. read more

Tony's has a reputation and is somewhat famous in the region. It is supposed to be an Italian-style diner. It is famous for its large portion sizes; many of the dishes come with a pound of bacon. Please read that again. A pound of bacon. Keep in mind that this is not the future, and bacon has not yet been genetically engineered to be good for your heart. After hearing about it on television programs and reading about it in a magazine here and there, my sweetie and I decided to stop in. Where to start. There was a line. OK, lines can be a good sign of something. But it's a good idea to see who is in line. And who is sitting at the tables. A clientele that is made up of people who you can tell, just by looking at them, do not put stake in high-quality food. We are talking more than a few people with guts that could be mistaken as a moon of Mars. Or think that wearing flip-flops to a restaurant is a good idea. That should be your first cue. At the table next to us, there was a good-sized family. Including a twelve-year old who was impressed by the amount of bacon. OK, if one person is impressed, I will try and keep an open mind. Despite my misgivings, I ordered the BLT, a signature dish. I did this even though the menu clearly stated it comes with a pound of bacon. A BLT, in my mind, should be all about the bread, not the bacon. But I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt. The sandwich was on my table in two minutes. It got to the table before our WATER got to the table. That tells me one thing: pre-made and sitting under a heat lamp. The bread which is supposed to be home-made, was OK. It was hard to tell just how good it was because it was toasted with Oleo. Not butter. Oleo. As if the bacon is not bad enough to your heart. I now know what a pound of bacon looks like. Pretty it is not. The sandwich itself: not very good. Most of the iceberg lettuce was from the inner leaf. I think I had all of two tomato slices. And bacon. Miles and miles of greasy, rather unimpressive bacon. My sweetie has a simple pasta dish with mushrooms and red sauce. I've know more than a few people who are Italian, and take pride in their cooking. One thing they would never, EVER do is use canned mushrooms. Tony's does. Somewhere there should be a rule: you are not allowed to call your food Italian if you use canned mushrooms. Oh, and the pasta was undercooked and the sauce was bland. Apparently, the folks at Tony's have never even heard of basil. What Tony's comes down to is this: their gimmick is large portions. Nothing else. So if you think the benchmark of a quality meal is a plate overflowing with bacon grease, you are likely to give Tony's five stars. The food is plain, predictable, and obviously geared towards a culture that looks for this in a meal. If you think food should be, oh I don't know, GOOD, you will think Tony's is a waste of time and a waste of your dollars. The meal, however, was not a total loss. We took the leftover pasta and bacon and put them in a saucepan, grilled up some onions, mixed the onions in with some dry basil, pepper, and salt, and reheated the whole mixture. The result was a pretty satisfying pasta meal. So the best thing I can say about Tony's is that the leftovers give you some good raw materials to do some repurposing. And that repurposing made for three serving sizes. I can also say the wait staff was efficient in getting you to a table. This can be a damming thing to say, as well as a positive. But they did seem to be genuinely friendly. And they do give their target audience what they want. Which makes them astute business people. But in my own opinion, a restaurant owner should care about food and turning a profit. The two concepts do not have to be independent of each other. This is not good food. You're better off at the fast food place across the street. Seriously. I give it one star because I do not have the option to give it less, and I will credit that star to the wait staff. read more

It's one of the last bastions of "city food" before you are officially "up north" where you'll take what you can get. The banality ends here. Tony's is known for one thing: Stupidly huge portions. We're talking BLTs and omelettes with a pound of bacon involved. Banana splits the size of your head. Milkshakes and sundaes in glasses taller than a small child. Locals and regulars get a kick out of the flabbergasted reactions from the Tony's newbies that meander in. One might have even seen it featured on the Food Network at one point. But until that giant sandwich and three pound platter of mashed potatoes is sitting in front of you, I promise you are not prepared. The food itself is okay. It's not great but it's good. The long line up out the door on a Saturday afternoon indicated that this was the it spot in Birch Run. After a 20 min. wait, we were seated at the counter, right infront of the kitchen so we could watch all the monster bacon sandwiches being assembled. We ordered the club sandwich ($9.49) and a side order of onion rings ($5.99). Order came up super quick and my stomach immediately started to turn once I saw the massive amount of turkey and bacon piled high! It felt like I had suddenly stepped into my own private episode of "Man Vs. Food ". My arteries were screeching. The sandwich was decent but I like my bacon extra crispy (near burnt). The bacon was deep fried to cook so still a bit limp for my liking. The menu said the sandwich contained 1 lbs of bacon but I think it was closer to 1.5 - 2 lbs. Onion rings were so-so...I definitely think they could have been left in the fryer a bit longer as well. They were a bit soggy on the inside and not crispy on the outside. Tony's is not a good place to eat if you're going to go try on form fitting dresses at the outlet mall afterwards but novelty of getting a sandwich filled with bacon the size of your head was definitely a draw! read more
