Wow! This place was VERY different from the Tony's diner I have been to up in Saginaw. The menu was vast and had an array of items like all-American diner food, breakfast, Italian - and even Mexican! The reasoning for serving Mexican? The menu said, "because we can!" That's my kind of attitude. The dining area is huge and our waitress was kind. Though she forgot a few things here and there, she served us with no major complaints. We started with a bowl of hearty cabbage soup that had a lot of ground beef in it (as a pleasant surprise). To our dismay, the soup was only lukewarm. Fortunately, it was tasty and we were too hungry and impatient to send it back for rewarming. The soup was served with 2 of their classic big fluffly Italian bread slices which smothered in butter, went so good with the soup. It was a nice touch that they included their signature bread with the soup, rather than boring saltines! My girlfriend's Reuben sandwich was to do for! Greasy, plentiful beef, kraut, and melty cheese all on buttery toasted rye bread with thousand island sauce on the side. She was wise in ordering the sandwich a la carte since we knew the hash browns would be huge in my breakfast. Her only gripe was that in a restaurant known to serve things up BIG, the dill pickle was about as small as a breakfast link! Not bad considering the sandwich still hit the nail in in terms of taste and preparation. I went with a classic breakfast dish - the steak and eggs. My ribeye 8 oz. was cooked medium and only about 5% of it was rubbery fat, which is the proportion I like. The steak cut a little tough even at medium, but it tasted awesome going down the throat nevertheless. Don't expect a Morton's steak of course, but do expect an all-American econo-steak that still eats like a champ. 3 eggs on the side were all sunny side up over easy. There was a thin film of cooked white glazed over the yokes, and I prefer to yokes to be undercooked and pure orange-yellow - but they were over easy nevertheless and still had runny yokes and whites. There was a forkful of egg for each forkful of steak. The amount of hash browns in my breakfast was INCREDIBLE. I was able to have my fill of hashed browns, share a serving with my girlfriend, and STILL have a last 1/3 of them to take home. Wow! This breakfast came with bread in addition to the hashed brown carb attack - I chose wheat and rye - both came buttery, toasty, and yummy! Overall, this is an all-American and classic diner. They have a souvenir type menu in the form of a newspaper that also boasts their recognition from being featured on TV, and rightfully so. This place probably ranks right up there as Michigan's go-to, classic, hometown diner. And the fact that it's off the highway and right next to the outlet malls of Birch Run and nearby Frankenmuth doesn't hurt either. YUM! read more

I will never go back! This place is known for its bacon so I knew we had to go, however, biggest let down. I'm sure the pound of bacon I was served was made 2 days prior and just warmed up, the apps were terrible, and tasted as if they have been cooked and then re-heated because even after 15 minutes they still burnt your mouth. This is the best part, they didn't have fried chicken but they had grilled chicken...... can't you throw some breading on it and fry it up, and call it a day? Not at this frozen food chain. This is the second time I have been here and unfortunately will be the last. The first time everything was great, now not so much. It was all still huge but the quality was awful. The French fries were so greasy you could squeeze them and they would literally drip. I told the waitress and she said" I won't charge you for them" how incredibly generous of her, since they were inedible. So so disappointed! If you want mediocre food, but like, A LOT of it, this is the place for you. Got the infamous BLT (with a lb of bacon) and chili cheese fries on the side (go big or go home). The bacon was lukewarm, there was little to no mayo on the bread, and it just wasn't anything to write home about other than literally just seeing a huge pile of bacon in front of you. It might be a well known name, but after waiting about 10 minutes to be seated we waited 15 minutes without a single wait staff even saying hello to our party of 6. When we told a waitress she said there is no server here and walked away. We waited a few more minutes and still no one came. We left- as we left we told the manager... If your goal is to over eat to the max and don't care if the bacon is borderline rancid, the home fries are un-browned and soggy then this is your place. They serve a take home container with your breakfast!! The only reason I gave this place one star is because the scrambled eggs (guessing ~8) were good. The home made bread flavor was adequate but two inch thick slices the size of size 8 flip flops that were dripping with butter just added to the problem. The price for this ridiculous mess was $9. On Friday, July the 29th, my family and I stopped at Tony's for breakfast on our way to Mackinac. It was an experience which followed me until the last of Tony's' poisonous swill had exited my body days later. What Tony's provides in quantity they more than ruin in quality. I didn't know, until last week, that it was possible to make bad bacon. Somehow the flavor of the frier they'd cooked it in had almost completely obscured that of the bacon, replacing it with the taste of miscellaneous burning. I ordered an omelette, and it was an omelette like no other. It was essentially a piece of thin, brittle paper wrapped around a bunch of raw vegetables. It was completely inedible. I have never, in my life, seen an omelette like this, nor an omelette I didn't like. But this wasn't an omelette. It was an envelope of uncooked onions, spinach, and big chunks of feta cheese. The ambiance of Tony's was a little like a nightmare about what would happen if the overweight, ignorant masses of the oft-forgotten small towns of America took over. Everywhere, bad food but in enormous, almost upsetting quantities. Get your buckets of beef stew! (Something Tony's was, very truly, offering.) Confused looking families with hordes of children in Make America Great Again! hats pushing through the seats to order their chili-by-the-bucket and their pounds of bacon; or, God forbid, anything from the 'South of the Border' section of the menu. Elderly couples that look like they may have entered in 1983 and just gotten stuck. The radio played what I'm rather certain was an 18-minute version of Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, and my sister let out an audible sigh of relief when one of the other customers went through the door. For a time, she'd been certain we were locked in time and space, trapped by Tony. In retrospect, I may have made more friends among the regulars at Tony's had I not chosen to discuss the extensive work of Chuck Tingle (author of Space Raptor Butt Invasion) with my brother; it being the marriage of two subjects that the general clientele seemed unprepared for, gay erotica and space travel. The only thing worse than the act of eating at Tony's was the aftermath. Over the course of the weekend, the phrase "Wrath of Tony" became a euphemism for what we did to the toilets of our hotel and other unsuspecting venues. While we all survived, I would recommend skipping Tony's on your way through Birch Run. read more

Solid 4.5 stars. The line was out the door when we arrived but moved super quick. The hostess directed us to a booth. Our wonderfully friendly waitress immediately greeted us and took our drink order and came back quickly to take our food orders. I got the French toast with strawberries and my bestie got the pancakes. We shared an order of hash browns as recommended by our waitress. And I got a side of bacon, a pound and you cannot get anything less. Food was yummy! Portion sizes are ginormous!!! The bacon was great and thankfully made the ride home because there was a lot left over (to all of you thinking ew, I had a Ziploc freezer bag and a cooler). The french toast was thick and not at all soggy -always a good thing. Good flavor in the wash which tasted a little eggy with some cinnamon and vanilla. The pancakes were tasty as well. After seeing this place on Food Paradise, we stopped in for a quick breakfast on our journey to Northern Michigan. The place was crowded, although we were able to get a table quickly. Reminiscent of a typical diner, the atmosphere is buzzing with conversation and servers pouring endless cups of mediocre coffee. The menus boast "best breakfast" which was quite misleading. The corned beef hash was so visually unappealing that my boyfriend would not even try it. Tastewise, it was a bland mash of tiny cubes of potatoes and corned beef that required hot sauce. The biscuits and gravy were super salty and heavy. Service was fine, and portions are big. So if you're in for quantity over quality, this is your place. read more

For those who are looking for gourmet food, this is not the place to go. Remember where you are, there is an outlet mall across the road but for the most part this is FARM COUNTRY. The food is good, home fare. No fancy stuff here. The portions are large, easly shared by two people except the icecream sunday which can be shared by an entire family of 8. Every time we go north we stop at Tonys. Mostly because I don't believe that there is even the remotest possibility of having too much bacon. Anything ordered with bacon gets a pound of bacon. YUM. The bad; in total the food "we ordered" aaa not so good... i ordered a cubed steak sandwich with melted mozzarella cheese, mushrooms with a Mariana sauce. anyone ordering this sandwich would be expecting a cubed steak sammich right. well I was given a hamburger patty with melted cheese. The so called Mariana sauce tasted like BBQ sauce with ketchup. the "waitress" so used lightly, i like attendant better, she couldn't remember more then three things at a time, there were four of so someones something was missing every time she came back to the table. i heard the family behind us say paraphrased she's either really tired or she gotta be high on something pretty much sums things up, right? the atmosphere was below average, everything looked of the late 60's to 70's decor. the place felt greasy or a not so clean feeling. the floor was dirty, I saw French fries, pieces of bread, smears of dripped sauces aaahhh. getting the picture? OK the Ugly, the four out of five times our waitperson came by our table when passing she would turn she self toward the table across the way in this process she would bump, hit, push my arm with her over sized load... all this "fun" then the bill comes- all I could think was for the love of all that's holly.. nearly $50 and not even one adult beverage... to sum up the event, the cost sure wasn't worth the experience... over all well below the hype... read more

We liked it. We hadn't been here in several years and things were great. Yes, my son liked the novelty of getting a 1 lb. BLT and sending a picture to his buddies, but it is more than that. We were there around 2:00 on a Sunday afternoon and had a 15 minute wait (in an air conditioned corridor of sorts. Got a booth, the waitress was got our drink orders quickly and came back for the food order. Delivery was fast and everything was done to our expectations. 1lb BLT - Son finished about 1/3 and put the rest in a to go box Grilled Cheese - Cheese was melted and daughter finished most of it (I think it came off the kids menu) Ham and cheese sandwich - Wife got through half and boxed the rest Hot beef sandwich and potatoes - I made a dent in it, but ended up surrendering and getting a to go box. If you have concerns about the portions, most of the meals can be made in half orders. We can't eat like this everyday or our cholesterol and BMIs would be off the chart. But a once in awhile experience this is good food. read more

Maybe we hit the kitchen staff on a bad day, but 1 of our 3 bowls of Chicken soup had a handful of salt thrown into it.....and the pizza sub also had a large amount of salt on 2/3 of it......when notified, the staff simply took back the offending bowl of soup, pored out the broth and replaced it with water. needless to say...our Tony's experience is over for a lifetime!!! read more

God bless this fine country! Tony's is a spectacle and worth coming once to at least see it. I first went to Tony's back in 2000 and had the BLT which was amazing back and then made my legendary return this year. This time I had the bacon cheese burger and was not disappointed. Many places that give you large portions lack the quality in the food but Tony's has it all. You probably can't finish you meal so don't order any appetizers or anything. The burger was really good I would highly recommend it but if it is your first time get the classic BLT. ALso make sure to grab as much candy as you would like on the way out. read more

I ordered the eggs, hash browns, toast, and bacon. Dear God...the hash browns could have used their own plate and my bacon was overflowing. The eggs were somewhere beneath the pile of bacon and hash browns. It was truly way too much food for any normal person. But you don't come to Tony's to be normal. You come to Tony's to watch what everyone orders and gawk at the insane amount of bacon served. The food is your average breakfast diner food, nothing fancy, but it's good and fills you up. I find it hard to believe this place so many good reviews. As a child I really thought this place was great because the portion sizes are enormous. The bacon is deep fried as a mess of knotted grizzly belly strips. I like how they rock the theme of giant portion sizes for everything, makes me feel like I should be a trucker. I had a roast beef sandwich and it was OK. Friends had a turkey club and country fried steak breakfast. The gravy with the steak was pretty much GFS type of gross but all in all I would chalk it up to any other Michigan diner. I am wondering if I should have gotten a burger because that might have been the way to go. I am sure the breakfasts are probably decent because it looked...well, normal with ginormous portions. This place is worth visiting. I probably will not return unless I was to surprise someone that is not from the area. They would do well to hire a janitor for the bathrooms as well. Found this in my daughter cup I asked the manager Charleen is she familiar with this item she said yes it came off the pop machine and she just offered us a new drink and said that's all she can do it's a mistake .....this is not right at all.... so if my daughter would of choke on a broken piece then it would of been a mistake..... Poor service ! Takes too long to place an order & servers are just rude. No silverware, napkins provided unless you ask for. Not very hygienic & servers are not well dressed/groomed either. I ordered chicken sandwich & i had little pieces of turkey on my plate. Chicken wasn't grilled properly. My friend ordered mushroom & swiss , bread was too soft n soggy that bottom bread melted.. Honestly, mediocre food at best. My fiance and I come here with our friends once in a while and I always forget the hype is better than the food. The fries are always soggy and undercooked and the breakfast food is terrible (except the omletes). Last time my fiance's burger wasn't even good (it was overdone and crumbly). Holy cow! When I say huge portion sizes I mean it! Went here for breakfast one time after stopping at bronners Christmas store and I didn't expect to get so much food!
