Been coming here since I was a kid food is always great fresh cut, french fries, growler hotdogs with their special chili sauce, and the fluff burgers with chili are amazing. This is one of those places that nobody talks about that is a kept secret in Schuylkill county. You should go to Tony's Lunch. It's an absolute hole in the wall but it's THE hole in the wall. Come for the Screamer with Fluff but come back for the unforgettable experience of having your chocolate milk tossed on your table with gruffness that says "I'm not here for you, I'm here because I owe it to the Screamers." I don't Yelp much, but as this is my favorite Hamburger joint in the whole US, I felt I must. Tony's is a legendary burger joint in Schuylkill County. Anyone from the area knows what they need to know already, so this review isn't for them. If you disagree with me on any of these, please post away, Tony's needs more love on Yelp. Anyhow, for those from not around the area, Tony's is famous for their aptly named Screamer, a hamburger with hot sauce. I never order this. The real deal is a quick cheese S.O.S (non melted cheese, sauce on both sides) with butter and onions. Depending on the day, the sauce is either very hot or ass meltingly hot. The burgers are not huge (with the exception of the Bull burger) so I usually get two. A chocolate milk is the preferred beverage of choice. (Point of etiquette: Walk in, grab a number, sit down until your called. Know what you want when your server comes up. You will get your food quicker if 1) you get quick cheese {which I prefer anyhow} and 2) you don't order fries. If you do order fries, they do not do cheese fries, don't ask. ) Although the burgers are the big draw here, I would also recommend the growler ( a hot dog with everything) and the cheese steak. The cheese steak is Schuylkill County style, not Philly Style. This means its a chip steak that comes with marinara sauce on it. I typically will get hot sauce on that too, makes it very enjoyable. Friends of mine from G-ville have also recommended a hot dog with the board, which apparently means every condiment they got. Another of my favorites, which is off menu, is what Bernie calls a "Sickie" This is a cheeseburger with sauce, onions, butter, and marshmallow fluff. It sounds a touch gross, but believe me, it's a revelation. I get one of these if I am in the mood (intoxicated). Don't let the name of this establishment fool you. They open at 8:30 PM ( at least they did a while ago, someone told me they changed the hours, so give or take 1 hr.) They are open late night, which is great for some post bar food. They are closed on Wednesdays, and I've just been informed Tuesdays also. Friday nights are packed, unless it's Lent. That being said, this is a classic local greasy spoon. Whenever I come back to the county, I always hit this place up. The people working here are always friendly, and they will help you pick something out if you are unsure. Enjoy your burgers tonight, and realize why they are called screamers tomorrow. read more

Tony's is amazing, and the air of mystery about whether it will be open when you arrive just adds to the excitement (we once pulled up to a sign on the door that just read "Flu"). This is the only place where you'll find a delicious fluffburger (marshmallow fluff, cheese, a nice pat of butter), but their burgers in general are great and their fries are on my list of favorites. This place is pretty great. The woman working at the counter was incredibly nice and helpful, gave us tips on what to order since we weren't from the area. Also gave us a rundown on things for us to do that night. I have to throw out a tip for those, like myself, who just can't handle the spicy (and trust me - the hot sauce is SPICY). It was recommended that I try the burger with just the onions, butter, fluff and cheese and without the hot sauce. I am SO GLAD I did, it was amazing. I've been coming here for over 20yrs and the good and service has always been too notch! Sometimes the wait can be long depending on how crowded it is so get here early! If you have those late night cravings this is the place for you!!! Opens late in the evening till early in the morning. You want something better than you're average fast food staples then go here! Burgers, fries, and phillies is where it's at. Walk in and pick a number and the waitstaff takes your order and in no time your food is ready. This hole in the wall looks like it needs a little TLC but the million one dollar bills tacked on the walls makes this place memorable. The old menu where the letters are also individually tacked up on a felt seems like you are stepping back in time. The restaurant has the old fashion diner chairs and you can see the cook cooking on the flat top and the waitstaff placing the fluff on the burgers. I wish I could give more stars! This place isn't the place to take your kids on a Sunday morning. It's a typical "hole-in-the-wall" kind of place. I've been going here for the past 25 years, and I am only 27. Typically a line forms outside around 7pm. They are open 7:30pm-1:30am Thursday through Monday. Once they open the doors, you walk in a take a number next to the register. Seat yourself. When your number is called, Bernie or Claire usually take your order. They've been waitressing there since the beginning of time. I always order 2 "S&S Screamers" (sauce on the top, and bottom). The beef is awesome, the sauce is to die for, and the onions, cheese, and butter on a steamed roll completes the amazing burger they call "THE SCREAMER". The fries are also good. I've had the cheese steaks, and hot dogs as well. They are all good, but the screamer is my usual. I then proceed to order 12 to go. I freeze them and reheat in the microwave. It may sound like I'm obsessed...and quite frankly, I AM! They are that good! If you live in the skook, you have to try a Screamer. Your life is not complete without one! They tend to be spicier on some nights, but I always leave satisfied. Don't forget to tip your waitress! Or at least sign a dollar bill, and tape it to the wall with the others! Hi , I was there on 10 / 13 /2013 It was around 9pm and I was number 30 , when I got there they were at number 18 so I thought no big deal I will wait , well a guy comes in and he took number 34 guess what the little old lady knew him and hide the ticket and waited on him that is so unfair it turned me off so I picked up and threw the ticket on the counter and left . For those of you that aren't Pennsylvania Anthracite coal region kids I offer you this explanation about Tony's: It is a legend. It is truly a must visit place if you ever get lost and end up in Girardville at night. They keep strange hours (7:30pm-2ish am) Wednesday-Sunday, and If you've never been there, you should find someone who has and go with them. There's a strange order to this place. You walk in, take a number from by the register and either find a place to sit or stand there and wait. Bernie will get around to you when she gets around to you. It's a shabby little place with the vent from the grill blowing out onto the sidewalk, seemingly beckoning the faithful. There are dollar bills with all manner of writing all over the walls, and people in every stage of sobriety. Now you might be asking yourself why I'm recommending this place...the screamer. The venerable staple of Tony's menu. This hamburger is made from a huge hunk of fresh ground beef, lovingly fried on an industrial sized grill and topped with a silly hot "chili" sauce that's as black as the devil's soul. Legend says the sauce is added to every day with its original origins sometime in the 1960's. You can order it "SOS" (sauce on both sides), quick cheese (un-melted cheese), and with, I kid you not, marshmallow fluff on it. Believe it or not, adding the fluff with the silly hot and tasty sauce is VERY good. But it is VERY sloppy. Order it with 2 chocolate milks and you're good to go. I once made the mistake of getting the French fries with the hot sauce on it. If you hate your digestive system, this is a good choice. I have to be totally honest... I LOVE this place. It's one of those places that generations of local families go to and everyone has a story about it. Try it. If you hate it don't go back. But you just might end up loving it too. read more

The hot sauce is inconsistent in heat, but it has a nice taste usually. The place could use a serious make-over, although nostalgic, it comes off as dirty and not food-friendly. The locals rave, but the burger itself is dry and tough-- overcooked to death! The addition of butter and raw onion is always nice, as is the mustard on a hotdog. If they would sell the sauce I would be a regular and put it on a burger worth eating, but the prices are outrageous for lack luster quality. Bernie is a sweet lady who will wait on you!
