I went to Tootsies in search of boots I spied during a recent trip to L.A. I didn't find those exact boots per se, but I found comfortable and stylish boots, flats and flip flops. I noticed brands like Steve Madden, Bronx and Betseyville shoes and purses, along with OPI nail polish. Tootsies also features pedicure services. Maybe some other time. It doesn't seem properly set up for that. There are deck chairs instead of spa chairs. I didn't see any whirlpool baths for the feet. It's cute, yes. Comfortable? We'll see! One of the cutest shoe stores I've been into in a long while. So cute, in fact, that while running past it yesterday, I had no choice but to stop in and take a look. College Ave is an unbelievable obstacle course of baby carriages, sidewalk cafes, and looky-looers for the average girl on her morning run--and most of the time, armed with my ipod, none of it distracts me. But, good lord, Tootsies took my heaving breath away! Where has this place been all my life??? Ridiculously adorable styles in a wide variety of price ranges (we're talking $20 slippers propped up next to $400 Richard Tyler boots), and just as many tempting purses and personal touches. This shop has all the flats, pumps, stilettos, animal prints, patent leathers and mary janes your little, girly wallet can afford! And, the gracious sales girls neither scoffed at the sweat pouring from my brow nor did they suspiciously eye my attempt to delicately handle their wares with my damp palms (don't worry, I didn't ruin anything). HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! I'm a shoe person and their shoe selection wasn't even that great, pretty mediocre. On top of that no one greeted me or asked me if I needed any help and it wasn't even busy!!! What made it even worse was that the staff members were talking among themselves and I was in the store for at least 5-8 minutes.. a woman walks in with her baby and one of the staff members greets her! This place has a nice interior, a great selection of cute shoes, and also happens to be astoundingly overpriced. I guess they figure they can gouge for shoes because their shop is in Rockridge? I'm not quite sure. I once saved up and bought a pair of heels at Tootsies for 90 dollars, then ended up seeing them at Ross a couple weeks later for 15 bucks. Same brand, same make, and there was nothing discernably wrong with them. BEWARE OF THEIR RETURN POLICIES! The shoe selection is vast. Flats, high heels, boots, sandals, semi-sport shoes, flip flops, and some tights. There are many different colors and patterns. The staff is nice enough but if you have a pair of shoes that are new and all the stuffing is in them, customer service calls for you to take that crap out of the shoe for the customer. Sometimes they have good sales but my biggest aversion to this shop are the return policies, which are not listed on the receipts. This has happened to me twice. Sale items are not returnable and bags UNDER $100 are not returnable. Whoever heard of a policy with a price limit assigned to it. These policies should be listed on the receipt or told to you, the customer, when you purchase anything from a store. The little notes posted on their check out stand are not sufficient. They never have anyting in a size 10 and all their 10's run SMALL! For a bigfoot like me it makes me not want to shop here anymore. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!! I know that it might sound weird for someone like me to be asking for a kids size pair of shoes, but hey, they fit. I saw that they were a retailer for toms, and i have been wanting a pair for a while (yes, i like the kids line more, because i like the inner lining of them more, and they have a more supportive sole in my opinion). I walked in asking if they had a kids size 6, and the lady looked at me as if I was crazy or something. She said "that is a women's size, kids only come up to size 4." I don't remember what she said word for word, but it was something along those lines. I did my research prior to going to the store, I am certain that they kids line goes up to a size 6. I told her that, and she changed her words around "well, I only carry up to size 4 for the kids line." That was my my first and is my last time walking into this store. Maybe they do carry a lot of brands, and offer a variety, but nicer customer service is needed. It was not busy, but maybe it was because she was too caught up in a conversation with another customer, a more "sophisticated" customer? I understand "bad" customer service, if it is a busy place, and less "snobby" of a store. I walked out very unsatisfied. read more

What an adorable shoe store! Well, I shouldn't just call it a shoe store-- it's also a nail salon in the back where you can get the perfect pedicure to match those perfectly eye-catching, metallic sandals. Good prices and great variety. I hear they also do girls' night parties on Fridays where you and all your girlfriends can get pedicures and shop. Sounds like such a blast. I have been in this store at least 5 times and I never get used to the fact that the girls that work there NEVER leave the back counter to greet customers. U literally have to walk all the way in the back so they can see you and you may get a "hello". Its too bad because I love their selection of shoes. i'd probably give tootsies three stars, but i need to take one away for sheer disappointment. i love the location + concept. but execution = fair at best. i used to get the feeling that the girls who worked there wished a hole would open up in earth as patrons entered the store & swallow them up. then they opened the store across the street. now i KNOW they all hate being there and wish that all the customers would die. because when the girls in the shoe store are on break, they go to the clothing store and bitch about how much they hate working in the shoe store. but while apathetic sales girls are not especially pleasant, neither are they rare. what really drags things down here is the selection. i would LOVE to be throwing away money on fabulous shoes. but it's hard to get behind throwing away money on so-so shoes. every once in a while i find something to buy, but usually i walk out the doors empty handed after rejecting the sea of too strappy or too trendy options that typically grace the shelves. read more

I have driven past this store many times and decided to go in today. They have a great selection of summer sandals/wedges (which is what I've been looking for) and the salespeople are helpful and attentive. Most shoes are around $100 or less. They may not be shoes you keep for 10 years but will definitely have you in style for a season or two. They carry big brands like Vince Camuto, Tom's, Nine West, Splendid, Lucky, Me Too, Camper, Hunter and random Italian brands. I have always wanted to check out this relatively new store in Rockridge, and I wandered in yesterday with a friend. They don't take appointments past 4pm on Sundays and 5pm on weekdays, and so I was a little bummed out not to really be able walk-in. However, I was delighted with the open, bright space and wide selection of styles to choose from. I particularly like their large selection of Seychelles shoes. I wish they had more Kenneth Cole NY or Kenneth Cole Reaction shoes. I only found one pair. Another customer was raving about the Dr. Scholl sandals Tootsies carried. My friend bought a pair of Seychelles canvas wedges, and I bought Mary Jane styled leather wedges, also Seychelles. I can't wait to come back and see what else they might have. I was only dissatisfied with them not carrying a wide range of sizes (it seems they probably only carry 3 of each size as they were out of a lot of sizes). I saw something about pedicures there but I already have my favorites for that, so I didn't bother -- I believe in specialization. I enjoyed this store along with my grilfriend. There are plenty of pretty shoes to choose from. We both walked away with some pretty shoes without breaking the bank. I agree with the first person who said "I believe in specialization". While it's a cutesy add to a shoe store, I really wouldn't go for it unless a)someone else was paying for it or b) i was with my mom and got caught up in the "girl-time" moment. Other than that I will say this: the first 2 times I walked into this store I walked out with a pair of shoes (2 pair the second time!) that I LOVE and still wear today. Actually, I don't wear them so much because they're almost dead from wearing them so much. Since those 2 times it's been iffy. The boots they have are (in my opinion) a little too hoochie mama for my taste and the rest of the shoe selection has gotten kinda blah. This store is seriously tempting considering how close it is to BART. When I do allow myself to go in they always have a great selection of shoes to choose from--- I got two pairs of flats there that I wear constantly plus a pair of Betsy Johnson heels that I always get complements on! Tooties is a wonder concept for a shoe store - especially if you're young and fun. I'm over 50 and I have a foot problem, so I can't indulge in some of the more glamourous delights, but even so, there is something there for every occasion. What I especially like about the place is the option of a mani/pedi and they have GREAT manicurists at this store. After years of so-so, manicurists in sooooo many places, Monica is a real pro. She's fun, really knows her stuff and the manicures LAST (because the products used are new and not "watered" down.). My cuticles are properly treated and not just played with. Besides, while you're getting your nails done you can watch people try on shoes and get a little inspiration (or not!) while your color dries. Tres manifique! read more

I have been to Tootsies at least 10 times in the last year or so. The selection is decent and they sometimes have good sales. I live in Rockridge and it"s nice to have a good shoestore just down the street. I really just wish that the sales girls where more attentive. I was there once trying to buy a pair of boots and theonly sales girl working was on the phone...she completely ignored that i was standing there with the boot in my hand for 5 minutes before i had to interupt her phone call with her Daddy. I quickly tried on the boots and decided i wanted them. Love this shoe store! They always have the cutest shoes and often have pretty good sales. The girls that work there are always really nice and helpful. It's actually kind of a dangerous place for me to venture to because I always end up finding shoes to buy!! The atmosphere is comfortable and appealing. The store has a nice selection, but the customer service was horrible. I will NEVER go in there again!! It's one thing to not be greeted when you first enter the store, but if you see me standing at the register with a shoe in my hand, it obviously means I have a question. The girl working in there was only concerned with helping her friend out who was trying on shoes. She looks at me and asks if I need help, I tell her yes, she then says after she gets her friend a shoe she'll be right with me. The whole process was terrible and a waste of time. Ever since I first walked past this store 3 weeks after it's opening it has been my favorite shoe place. Strangely, I'm not much of a shopper... I go once or twice a year to rotate out a care worn pair of shoes/jeans/etc...but, most times I leave here with 2 pairs. Now that they are starting to carry my favorite shoe line (Miz Mooz) I'm not so sure 2 will be enough. Prices can range from mid 30's to 300 depending on the shoe. But I've gotten everyday soft soled flats & the needed "going to- or- in a wedding" pair of shoes on a very tight budget.
