Started coming here as a Cal student. Good place if you're looking for a cheap eats nearby. Favorites are the top dog, hot link, and bratwurst. There's no seating here-just small counter to get your condiments and go. Menu with flavor options is listed outside but without prices. Menu prices are pretty small hard to see in the shop behind the counter-these would be helpful to be on the outdoor menu. Was excited to order, but the worker at the counter was pretty rude and made our experience off putting. Would only come by if you're looking for a cheap eat in Berkeley, but wouldn't make a trip out of the way here. read more

I had a really disappointing experience here. The food itself might be decent, but the service completely ruined it. The guy behind the counter was extremely rude--yelling at customers and creating an uncomfortable atmosphere the entire time. What was even more concerning was the lack of basic hygiene. He was handling cash and then immediately touching bread and food without washing his hands or using gloves. That's not just unprofessional, it's unacceptable for any food establishment. Visited Top Dog on a Saturday evening. There was a somewhat long line when I arrived. Took 5 minutes to reach the order counter, but didn't pay till 5 minutes later, then another 10 minutes for my food to be ready, it was a one-man show in there, the guy trying to handle loads of customers on his own, throwing sausages on the grill even before collecting payment. There were self serve containers of sauce and condiments, including relish, onions, ketchup and several different types of mustard. The top dog frankfurter was thin but tasty. Nothing special about the bread. Ordering two is a must if you're hungry. read more

Top Dog is a famous indoor hot dog stand near the UC Berkeley campus that is known for their cheap grilled sausages. The hot dogs come in several popular varieties, and they range from $4.5 to $5 each (the catch, of course, is that you can't use your card or Apple Pay for an order under $5). The hot dogs are grilled in front of you and come on a nice French roll bun. This place has been around since 1966 and has earned a loyal following. Had I not been so excited about trying the place, I probably would not have been so disappointed. That said, I have some seriously mixed feelings about this place. I paid $9.5 for a classic Frankfurter and a Bockwurst, thinking I had discovered one of the best deals in the town. Alas, that was too good to be true. Although the taste was unobjectionable, and I liked the buns, I think my hot dogs were a bit overcooked and very average. What at first seemed like a real steal for a hot dog from such a famous place turned out to be more of a low fee for a very simple, hot dog cart or neighborhood grilling party type of dog. Again, not bad. But also not great. The service here was very average and minimal. The man working here seemed focused on grilling the dogs. He wasn't particularly friendly or helpful, but I wasn't offended or anything. (It just wasn't great service.) And the environment was just a roof over a grilling area, topping counter, and a small counter to stand and eat. The ambiance was super casual like an old fashioned kind of hot dog stand, which makes since given how long it's been around. It does seem they are able to supply lots of hot dogs for such good prices because they don't invest much in the quality of the food, the service, or the building. That said, a meal of that size in Berkeley for $9.5 isn't bad. If I'm ever in the area again, I might come back for a snack. Not much you can say about a dog. I don't know why it took me so long to try a hot dog here, but it finally happened at around 10PM on a Friday night after watching a movie. I didn't know what to expect walking in but confidently ordered one Garlic and one Top and paid in the matter of 20 seconds - Service was chop chop. If you're expecting the size of a Costco hot dog, don't. I think I could comfortably consume two of these by myself, but I'm not complaining at all LOL. These were just two satisfying hot dogs topped with all of the mustards, ketchup, relish, and onions we could cram into it. Only disappointment was that the Garlic dog wasn't garlicky at all, unless we received the wrong dog. Will try again next time! Top Dog is a Berkeley staple! Top Dog is the go-to spot on Berkeley game day or after a night out! It is open super late - 2:00am on weekdays and 3:00am on weekends! There are a ton of sausage options (even for the vegetarians out there!). I haven't had a Top Dog flavor that I did not enjoy. They have a nice condiment bar where you can add whatever toppings to your dog that you may like. This area can be a little tight and messy when busy but it isn't really a problem. Top Dog isn't a sit-down spot - you put in your order and head back to the counter once your order is called. Even when it's super busy, service is never slow. A BERKELEY INSTITUTION Isn't the campus the institution in Berkeley? Yes but when you eat a college town there has to be a place that signifies the town. First the location needs to be close to campus. Second the place can't be expensive because most of the customers are students. Third the food has to be simple yet delicious. Fourth there are no sit-down tables. The last part is the most unique aspect of Top Dog. I've been a fan of Top Dog since I was a student at California. As an alum after California Football games whether they won or lost I would go to Top Dog. I would come to Top Dog to eat before I head to the Bart Station. Since that location is temporarily closed I go to the Durant location. What is special about hot dogs at Top Dog? As Stephen A. Smith would say "That's blasphemous". If you want hot dog go to Wienerschnitzel. One thing I hate about hot dog is the hot dog buns as they tend to be stale and heavy. You don't get hot dog buns at Top Dog, but French roll that is toasted - a feature that separates Top Dog from other places that serves hot dog. The one word I would describe when you bite a sausage at Top Dog is crunch because of the toasted bun along with snap of the sausage. The sausages are grilled in their own juices and oil hence why they are flavorful. My favorite sausages to order are the smoked chicken apple and kielbasa. The smoked chicken apple has a sweet flavor while the kielbasa is savory. However there are different sausages with unique textures. The hot link isn't oily. The calabrese is unlike Italian sausages I've eaten because there is fennel. The frankfurter is lean yet flavorful. The bockwurst has a creamy texture like blood sausage but doesn't have that iron taste. The lemon chicken tastes like rotisserie chicken. What I love about Top Dog it's no-nonsense food stand. You see people waiting in line outside just to place an order. Depending how long the line is (especially on Saturdays) sometimes customers wait in line for 30 minutes before you place an order. After placing an order you wait another 7 minutes before you get your sausages to eat. You might think that's crazy to wait 40 minutes for your food. For the wait I recommend not ordering one or two sausages but three. If this place was so bad you would never see the long line after a football or basketball game. I'll continue going to Top Dog at least several times a year after either a sporting event or if visit to the campus. I'll say this for those applicants who gets accepted to California when you go to Cal Day go to Top Dog. In fact I believe Top Dog should be a recruiting or advertising mechanism to attract new students to attend the university. read more

Cheap dogs ($5-6), unlimited customization with a toppings bar, and a friendly server who struck up a good conversation. Stopped by this spot with my friends who went to UC Berkeley to get that undergrad nostalgic experience. The shop itself is really small and is clearly has a lot of history behind it. I got the hot link and added mustard, diced onions and this pickled topping that looked like it could be sauerkraut (there was no label to be sure). I liked that there were 2 different types of mustard to choose from. The hot link wasn't that spicy but the flavor was great. I also liked that the bun wasn't a typical hot dog bun and was like sandwich bread that was grilled. I will say that I was a little turned off by how the sauerkraut (?) was left out in the open and looked a little suspicious/sanitation looks like it might be a little questionable but it was good anyways and I didn't get sick. I'm here at Top Dog visiting some iconic places in the East Bay. This location is THE original location opened by the original owner a real counter-culture type of guy in 1966! The 60's in Berkeley were a real time in history. The friend I came here with used to come here back in the 70's and said a sausage dog was just .70 cents or so. He knew the girl behind the counter and never had to even pay! Now, the dogs are around $5.00 bucks and he says smaller then before! I guess 50 years will change things! I wasn't even born yet! OK, we got two of his used to be faves, the Kielbasa and the Calabrase. Polish and Italian sausages. Plus a couple of drinks. There's little seating inside, so we took it to go out on the street like most people here. I had the Polish and I gotta say it's pretty damn good. My friend said it didn't have the big chunks of fat in it like he remembered. The Italian was good, better than he'd had in a long time. This original Top Dog is quite the place to visit and take in the street scene one block from the UC Berkeley campus. If you're in Berkeley, you should come here jus tto experience it. Everyone that I have interacted with that has worked here has been really chill and helpful! Easy to talk to. Your food comes out in about 5 to 10 minutes, no matter how busy they are and how much you order. A plus is that this place is open late night, so you can fix your cravings at any time! What can I say about Top Dog that everyone else hasn't already commented on? The vibes are just as expected, and true to what should draw you in. It's an old fashioned place and it works. You go in and order a hot dog, there's a few side orders like potato salad or chili. I love chili, but I wanted to try out the potato salad. Honestly, despite it not being store bought (according to who I asked) it was definitely leaning towards that taste because it was a little sweet. However, it had a texture that made it feel classic, and I appreciated that. I asked about their popular hot dogs and was pointed in the direction of the Hot Link. Genuinely, I was surprised over how small it was (ha ha). As someone on the shorter side, I want to struggle a bit while I eat a hot dog. HOWEVER, it was perfect for what it was, which is: a hot dog with toppings in accordance with what YOU like and what's YOUR desired amount or whatever YOU want to omit. In here, you're the "Top Dog" (unless if a worker makes you feel bad I guess, according to some other reviewers who should just cry about it instead). I like a place that runs a good deal. For 6-7 bucks I got a Hot Link with free toppings of sauerkraut, relish, onions, ketchup, and mustard (didn't spot the mayo or anything else I would've added it, like a person of culture), along with a potato salad side that's put in an 8oz--but definitely still has space to move around--container. I devoured the hot dog on the way home. A close to 8 minute experience. The bread wasn't too soft, the perfect slight crunch, mixed with the straight of the grill hot dog was heavenly. The toppings added to the flavor of the sausage and toned down the spiciness. The sausage wasn't that big compared to the roll, so the toppings were mostly on top (I would recommend opening your own roll and placing some toppings deeper inside, or get ready to take some strategic bites). It probably took about 6-8 minutes with ordering and waiting for it to be ready. In that time, I chatted with the man behind the counter. He seemed really nice and considerate. Very patient with my pondering and questions. Very kind to other customers who came in as well. I will say, it's deserving of a total 4.5 stars. It's close to perfect. I would recommend spending 16 or more minutes of your lives to come and buy a hot dog (at least once) from Top Dog. read more
