The Maurpas chicken dish is my personal favorite dish, fried chicken filled with crawfish and other flavorful items, served with with a tangy hollandaise sauce and crisp fresh green beans. However, the five star options are the desserts. The creme brûlée is good, but the banana foster bread pudding is worth a visit alone. For an $8 (with tax) purchase, I will go there and eat it alone! The sauce is carmelized and thick, a refreshing take on the typical New Orleans style sauce. The sauce on top is crisped and it makes a praline type flavor. I've been here a couple times for dinner, and I have always loved the experience here. Their atmosphere is more sophisticated and luxurious than the usual dining establishments in Hammond. The wait staff has always done a good job with ordering and touching base in a timely manner. Today I went for brunch for the first time. I ordered the Tope La French Toast, and my boyfriend ordered the Surf and Turf. Both of us were extremely happy with our dishes. The french toast were two big pairs of toasts with honey roasted pecan cream cheese in the middle. Fresh blackberries and a generous amount of powdered sugar adorned the dish. The surf and turf was a biscuit and NY Strip cut in slices topped with a creamy peppercorn gravy that had andouille sausage and lobster bits. Tope La has a special place in my heart. I spent my first ever Valentines Day here. Say it with me now, daaaaaaaawww! This was a rather long time ago and have since evolved to spending Vday avoiding people at all costs by eating large amounts of Chinese food on the couch. OK, back to task here... I have recently returned to Tope La and while a lot is different, much of it is still the same. The interior is dimly lit, a little old school, but nice. It's pretty casual during the day, but can feel a little nicer at night. Being that its smack dab in the middle of a college town, I think this restaurant draws more of an older crowd. The menu is bigger than I remember and offered more variety in price points as well. The regular dinner entrees average $22 with a lunch menu offering a much lower price point. The menu has everything from sandwiches & salads, to seafood, to pasta dishes. They have a little something for everyone. The appetizer that everyone raves about is the Bayou dip. It's their take on the classic spinach and artichoke dip by adding pepper cheese and sun dried tomatoes. It certainly does add another flavor dimension. I found it to be very very creamy though, would have liked more spinach. It almost had the consistency of a thick queso. Still in all it was really good. I also like how they give you pita chips with it instead of tortilla chips. For my lunch, I got the chef salad wrap, because I love chef salads and I love when things are wrapped up in a tortilla, so no brainer here! Perfect lunch grub! When the wrap came out it was huge. They make all their dressings in house and the honey mustard that came with it was awesome. I took half of it to go, and as embarrassing as this is to admit, I rarely have to go plates. (read: I eat like a 300 man) It came with a broccoli slaw, which wasn't my favorite thing, but liked that it came with a vegetable. I have been here twice in the last year and for restaurants in Hammond, this one is near the top of the list with respect to class, presentation and steaks/seafood selections. The steaks (filet) and seafood here is very good and up there with the top restaurants in Louisiana. The appetizers are also excellent with the bada-Bing shrimp, blackened alligator (try finding that in the Midwest) and the andouille corn dogs being my favorites. Ordered 2 salads last night to go, a Magnolia Salad and a Shrimp Remoulade salad .. How can a place mess up a salad? First off there was NO shrimp in my Shrimp Remoulade salad, secondly it came with 3 fried green tomatoes that taste like hard rocks, the smaller tomatoes tasted sour and i had 1 little "piece"of a cucumber! The total of both was $31.90... I basically threw away $31.90 because no one even answered the phone when i called to discuss this and obviously no one cared enough to make $31.90 of salads taste good. We came in for appetizer and dessert. The server was very sweet to let us camp out for three hours (two friends meeting between NOLA and Baton Rouge). Don't gasp we left her a 50% tip. We had the Italian nachos which were a sweet cream sauce laced with sausage, olives, sweet banana peppers on puffed pasta chips. I guess I dont appreciate a chewy piece of bow tie. The flavors were incredible but the texture of the pasta chips was awkward. We had the sauce all over us. I wish I'd tried one of the other grilled items of Marsala dishes to get a feel for their entrees. We split the praline cheesecake. The flavors were there but the cheesecake texture was mealy instead of creamy as was the whipped cream topping. I'm guessing it had been frozen or had been refrigerated too long. Flavor yes, fresh not so much. The praline topping made it worthwhile. Sorry I don't have photos. We were too busy chatting to have food porn. I heard they have wonderful brunches and holiday meals. Tuesday, the lunch menu is served for dinner. Wednesday is usually $1 martini night. Sunday is brunch with mimosa specials. The food is rich and has a local flavor. I've thoroughly enjoyed every meal here. Large portions served in a casual elegant atmosphere. The bar is a good place to meet friends for a drink, while avoiding the college crowd on Cate street. This is my favorite place to eat in Hammond. The food is an upscale Cajun menu. They have burgers and (very good) red beans with fried catfish if you aren't feeling too adventurous. The bayou dip is my favorite appetizer. The porcupine hush puppies are great too. The alligator and grilled oysters are good...people not used to Cajun cooking may find them too salty. Every entree I have had has been good. If you want a salad the grilled vegetable salad is great . If you want meat go for the injected pork tenderloin. Not sure what is up with the negative reviews for this place....I typically stick with the entrees or salads and haven't been disappointed. read more

The food here is top notch! A little on the pricier side for Hammond, but it is a different level of dining and the portions are often very generous so it's well worth the price. My husband and I love to share a bottle of wine and the largest ribeye plate (I think you can get a 16 ounce?) regardless, it's so much food!!! It comes with an amazing Caesar salad with homemade croutons and great dressing, loaded baked potato, and garlic bread. And the steak itself is amazing and a nice cut. Our server was VERY young, but friendly and he did a nice job, all the orders were spot on. Atmosphere was comfortable, sort of a tavern feel...don't be fooled by their website, it's not nearly as fancy at it appears on their website. "Tavern" really seems to describe it best. One in our party ordered the crab and cheese pasta, she seemed pleased, but I had a bite and felt otherwise. Mostly pasta and cheese with just a hint of crab. Hubby seemed happy but not overjoyed with his selection, and my club sandwich was good, not great. Lacks the sophistication of sandwich mastery I'm accustomed to, but hey, after all, we were in Hammond. This is definitely one of the few places I've been in Hammond that is really a "special occasion" level restaurant. Not to say you can't go for any occasion, but when you want that special atmosphere and unique food, Tope La will deliver. They have a good wine menu, fairly unique cocktails and on Fridays (I believe only in the summer) they have fish specials. Our latest dining experience was quite nice, though the food service was quite slow because they had a large rehearsal dinner there. Here's what we had: - Bayou Dip - This was pretty good. Great flavor, maybe a little too runny, but all in all a great appetizer to share. Unique twist on the spinach & artichoke dip you're used too. - Crabmeat & Artichoke Soup - I wasn't so impressed by this. The bisque lacked complexity, so it kind of just tasted like white gravy - House Salads w/ Sugar Cane Vinaigrette - Very interesting concept for a vinaigrette dressing, though a little sweet for a whole salad. - Tabasco Speckled Trout (Fish Special) - Quite good. Simple, served atop a sweet potato, crab cake and topped with a Tabasco butter. - Amberjack Alfredo (Fish Special #2) - Also quite good. The fish was prepared well and the alfredo was unique with sundried tomatoes and topped with fried oysters. - Swordfish (Fish Special #3) - This dish had so much promise but I was a little underwhelmed. It was served atop a reduction of arugula, onions, portabellas and tomatoes, then topped with a walnut dijon sauce I believe. I thought the sauce was overly sweet, the fish overcooked and lacking flavor and the reduction lacked complexity. The arugula didn't have it's usual bite. I very much enjoy coming to Tope La because they have all of the Cajun/Creole classics but then also come up with unique specials that show forward thinking in the cuisine. read more

Tope La is one of my husband's favorite restaurants in Hammond. He loves the Filet of Sirloin on Smoked Gouda Alfredo. I typically choose one of the fish dishes and am usually happy with what I order. We've also had the bayou dip, which is pretty tasty, but heavy. I've also had their Chef Salad Wrap at lunch and really enjoyed that. Bloody Mary's at brunch are highly recommended by my husband (one of his favorite Bloody Mary spots). Overall, this is one of the more upscale restaurants in Hammond with a very intimate vibe and worth giving a try! read more

The shrimp were head on and nicely sized. The portion was huge! The shrimp were a bit over-cooked, edging toward mushy, but the sauce was excellent. Bread was tasty, but stale. The star of the meal with the entree. I had the shrimp and eggplant casserole. It was delicious. I ate every bite of it. No room left for dessert.
